The hope is that removing the encyption has the same effect on pushback that Linus wanted to happen by not selling iphones at all..
I doubt it will, but Apple is good at marketing, them telling every iOS user that your Gov't actions just made you less secure would have an effect, if they decided to go on the offensive..
Meanwhile the Feds in America have been actively putting out disclaimers encouraging American citizens to use encrypted services and engage in privacy practice referencing the recent Chinese-state linked hack on the US Treasury
very very rare timeline where I agree with the US government and Apple at the same time
Also lets see how the push for encryption continues in the next few years in the US..
Yeah, not to be political but I severely doubt this administration gives a flying jay about privacy
I think they care a lot about privacy.. which is why a bunch of randos have access to just about everything.. so happy to not be American atm..
but thats what is beautiful about the internet. Open source encrypted services will always exist even if they are "regulated". Someone, somewhere will still develop it
ahhh, ahh. yes. indeed. I forgot about the SSNs already being accessed by an executive at Twitter
Don’t ask me where it was originally, but I saw a snippet that essentially summarizes as “Dennis did a really good job up charging sponsors for high production ad reads for Channel Super Fun, so we put him in charge of upcharging sponsors for high production ad reads everywhere else”
LMAO. I love that. Dennis has got to be one of the most chaotic good people at LMG
I highly doubt the EU would ever do it, considering that currently there's an active transitioning for private information to have encrypted means to be accessed and every such information online is now required an MFA , if it didn't already have one. A lot of countries are currently rolling out govmnt digital solutions this year for this exact reason. Plus GDPR is both an EU and local government level law around here. The UK has never adapted it as a local thing, they just followed it as part of the EU until...well, we all know the history.
So yeah, I'm not too worried about that hypothetical
In the last decade or so the world has changed enough that I no longer make optimistic assumptions..
It's more of an educated deduction based on current events than just an optimistic assumption
But to each their own
Well, its an interesting dichotonomy but goes to show that Brexit has had consequences
Say what you will about the infinite woes the EU has, but I have to hand it to the EU, theres a lot of privacy regulations that we Americans benefit from as a direct result of regulation in the EU
That and all the antitrust focus they have put forward too.
Who has written about the development perspective and self sighting of PUBG
Yes. Although I'm a little sad, that this needs to include a purposeful fall apart from the obvious losses (visas, duties, ease for students/workers to move freely around the continent etc). In any case, hopefully they'll figure out eventually what's best for them.
Yeah. I agree 100%. I am not British so I have no stake other than: it looks like our friends over the pond have shot themselves in the foot
Fun fact: I was living in Leeds at the time. Next day at work all the British people looked at me with pity and some asked "aaawww, what will you do now?". And I smiled and said "what I'm not the one who is in trouble, I actually have options to go to". And then they went "oh, I guess it's true...".
But my brother and his family have a secondary UK citizenship, and they were looking forward to eventually move back, I'm not so sure about their outlook now
I have friends in a somewhat similar precarious scenario here in the states. no one in particular is in any direct danger and they are doing things the legitimate way but they seem uneasy about being here on student visas and their citizenship statuses. Its more a concern that those paths COULD be shut for them since the rhetoric is definitely in the air
Yeah, it doesn't sound fun. My partner is American, but I asked him back when we started our relationship to consider moving to Europe, as I have trust issues with a lot of state-level decisions, politics aside. There's rarely a day he doesn't thank me for making him move here. No place is a paradise, but some are just...not hostile.
But it also gives both of us a lot of perspective
Yeah, mosh pit seating in the US is not a fun ride at the moment -_-
Country spent a quarter-century wrapping itself in self-affirmation about how good of a job it did last millennium and seems to have backed right into the mistakes it was praising itself for dodging
I would say most North Americans are relatively under travelled, at least not outside of NA itself. Most Americans who have travelled to other continents generally do hold the opinion America is behind in a lot of aspects in terms of the day-to-day quality of life amenities. I get SO much flack for saying it though. e.g. Our car centric infrastructure hurts us and we would be better for it to have more options other than vehicles, but that opinion is often met with hostility and misinformation about the real world application of these things in day-to-day life.
To me it speaks volumes to the amount of control American corporations in the narratives and opinions that are held here in the States. We would much rather just say "We are the greatest country in the world" and plug our ears when something is factually better in another country
Fr, some of the people giving creed to the idea we are somehow better than everyone else feels stuck in the 80s. I WANT America to be better, but that would mean giving way to social safety nets and investing taxes into things the individualist American would decry that it is somehow communism when it has nothing to do with that. the McCarthyism still runs strong in America, even if we dont want to admit it
McCarthyism is a component of it, but generic American exceptionalism “we’re #1 because we say we are” is not just red scare leftovers.
I think the main issue lies in the misunderstanding how the USA isn't really a country in the traditional sense, more of a federation. States do have vague liberties (but some are very firmly defined) and in general it all ends up being super confusing and often even controversial (honestly the whole DC vs Maryland situation is simply mind-blowing for me). So technically when you're moving states, which isn't uncommon, you're also adapting to a slightly different system every time. Yet you're also expected to treat it all as a single entity, since, well, in a sense it is.
But yeah, it's a bit more complicated, than just treating it as a single country, yet it is also vastly different from how the EU operates
He has a way to get me to watch all the sponsor spots. It’s refreshing.
On top of all of that, somehow the only person anyone seems to care about is the President. It’d be like if the only person in the entire EU anyone blamed problems on was the President of the European Commission.
Yeah, I agree. I did not really mean to conflate the two to be one, I should have clarified it as a component. In my life personally, it has felt a little bit more pervasive in recent months. I have, I kid you not, been personally called a dirty commie for advocating for social programs, sooo it is a little bit exceptional for me
That’s a component of why I feel the undertraveled comment earlier requires a little nuance
Yes, we do not go to other countries nearly as often as our European friends
But also, we have practically every climate within our borders
It is crazy the double standard that are floated under the guise of "bring power to the states!" but the same party saying that hasn't done anything for federalism, and has doen more to centralize in the last 20 years than the competition
Remnants of so many cultures throughout our states
You won’t meet a Celt in Europe
But we have still have Native American tribes you can talk to today
Not to be controversial and all, but it doesnt help we have continuously and egregiously made life harder for those individuals
Oh no, absolutely
But while this is by no means their glory days
We’re not sending them on trails of tears anymore
So when that’s your baseline
I wouldn’t say making life harder
But yes, we do have many more obstacles than their should
*there
But on the same token we are happy to build a pipeline through the territory we said was theirs which makes their water table for their drinking water quite literally undrinkable
Yup
I also feel that America, being the destination of so many for so long, enjoys the ability to host so many sites and destinations inside her that to explore “distant lands thousands of miles away” is fulfilled by cities on her own shore
Based on 30 seconds of reading a Wikipedia article… Wales.
Yes, British universities outlast even the Aztecs and their capital
I certainly value traveling and exploring cultures
tbf you could attribute that to European colonialism having destroyed the Aztecs and not that Aztecs actually disappeared or werent good enough to keep existing
Celts in Europe are a bit weird in the sense of it’s not a well-defined ethnic group, but more just a glue of common spoken language. Like, Ancient Britons are Celts. “Celt” is more like Native American than Navajo, in terms of umbrella
Is older than the Aztec society itself
But when a family from North Dakota wants to explore a new place and travel, you have Cape Canaveral, Detroit, LA, NYC, the Texas metro
And of course, most of the popular media (by revenue) features these cities, showcases their landmarks
Ahhh I see, sorry i am not meaning to be confrontational, but yeah in general, I guess I am spiteful of the American exceptionalism. There are components, like earlier, McCarthyism is one I feel is more prevalent than many would give credit for. Another is that Americans are not travelled. Like you mentioned, we could just go visit other American cities, but a city on the West Coast is marginally different and mostly culturally the same in say, Washington, take Seattle for example, than Dallas. Sure, Dallas is very highway centric and not nearly as green as Seattle, but at the end of the day, the Starbucks and McDonalds are up the street and the oversized Walmart Parkinglot without a native plant in sight are up the street whether you are in Rural Appalachia or in suburbian sprawl American generic city #47
It was just a group of people I pulled from a hat who, as far as I knew, were definitively “before the people who are there now”
No doubt, but I also feel like that can miss the forest for the trees
I agree Texas is a highway hellscape, and that Seattle is more similar to NYC than London is to Moscow
I tend to find myself pointing out this fun fact a lot - Arizona’s almost the size of Poland, and it and New Mexico together are bigger than Spain. xD
But also, that’s what happens when you share a language with everyone
Like Dublin and London
(I feel as though the majority of Dublin does NOT speak Gaelic)
It’s just different enough, with unique sites and sounds
To be a fun place to visit, go explore, and learn
But also has enough familiarity to you and you share a sense of camaraderie that you’re all Americans
I honestly think a larger component is that our social safety nets are disgustingly bad. Sure, our size and culture facilitate a homogenous experience where it makes it difficult to see other perspectives. But I think the expendable income, despite higher wages, I would place many bets, is lower than say the average western European. I see that metric used a lot, American wages being higher on average on a technicality than our Western Euro or East Asian democratic counterparts, but what I would bet is that expendable income plays a huge role due to Americans having to individually front the cost of many of these safety nets.
I feel as though it’s a balance, that a mix of both is good
Our expendable income is greater, by the numbers
But also, our houses are bigger
Our cars too (and more dangerous)
Our electronics are cheaper
Especially adjusted for PPP
But, of course it depends if you want to be part of the Norwegian Oil Fund or get a 5090 for a few hundred dollars less adjusted for purchasing power
Electronics being cheaper is probably subject to change.
Eugh, don’t remind me
This is very true
e.g. the expectation to lease or even buy a $20k, $30k+ car fresh out of high school or have a family that could afford that ability. If we want to go to university, we HAVE to have access to a vehicle which in no world is a cheap expense. Most families require multiple functioning cars to be able to function and earn income. I found being in European language classes that my European classmates were WAY more mature when I was in high school, like independent, had trade or vocational training lined up, were already travelling on a weekend basis where my American peers were relying on their parents to do EVERYTHING. I found the same travelling in East Asia. Generalizations set aside, those kids are way more independent overall. The same things I said that were true about the euro students and what I saw being in Asia were true. Self reliant. Able to participate in activites, not rely on parents for everything.
I agree, independence of young adults does seem to be a category we’re lagging behind in
As for university and public transportation, any big city college will get you by just fine
This also doesn’t invalidate your argument though
Phoenix begs to differ
Yeah, and that continues down the line to our trained professionals. The current admin justifies, say, tariffs, saying it will bring industry to the US. Having sights set on silicon fabs in the US is one example. Those industries, let alone the skills dont appear overnight.
I’m Northeast, so I’m SPOILED by American standards for public transit
I will live and die by the subway
Egghhh. Idk. I havent been east coast, but I have been on Phoenix, SLC, DFW, and LA public transportation and none of those, for supposedly being better for what we have in the US, will ever come close to touching Japan's. Korea is a more car-centric nation, but even their public transportation has put everything in the States that I have personally experienced to shame.
I don’t know how far we can make judgements on this. Since Ancient Greece the capability of young people have been called into question. I think this is far more wait and see
Japan has a very large system
Alas, NYC subway has to run 24/7/365
No downtime
No breaks
So, I respect Tokyo’s capability
But we do a lot with round the clock service
Oh we can't. But the facilitation of education and vocational training does not seem up to par, and I cannot imagine that these skills are suddenly going to appear. Last I checked, a lot of industry in the US has been continously outsourced and what we have had has been on the chopping block of solvency multiple times. E.g. Obama having to bail out American car companies after the crash of 08, which SAVED the American car industry outright.
Also, while I am from NYC, I do understand this is not representative for the not 322mil Americans who don’t live in NYC
Ford didn’t need a bailout
But yes
GM and Chrysler did
Yeah, its systemic. And ofc I know that NY's is world class, even if it does appear to be old and behind the times, NY had Europeans help with it and actively still do. I clarified I cant speak for the east coast because I have never been. Just that, people who have experienced both Tokyo's and NY's, in general would probably still side with Tokyo at the end of the day. I would say, Kansai region is a closer analogy though to NY. It's an older system, it isnt nearly as complex, and the populations are more closely alligned. Just as an aside/beside the point. genuinely curious how people would compare both
Maybe this is different in Europe but it surprised me just how little market penetration the US auto industry has in SEA. You’d think something would be popular out there but it seems like that stopped being a thing even in AUS when Holden kicked the bucket. I’d see signs advertising Stellantis stuff but no one driving them in Taiwan. Teslas were common though.
SEA is a complex region and a lot of geopolitical factors at stake there. I can see Taiwan, for example, having interest in the American products but Thailand has a lot of factors to not be in favor of western product.
But maybe the autoindustry thing comes down to jsut the sheer size of our vehicle preference here. We dont make very many small vehicles
And the small vehicles American companies make
They don’t sell here!!!
I yearn for the day
me and you both
Ford sells their European work vans
All I want for Christmas is a Ford Yaris xD
YES. and not like, a demo where they sell like..a handful and call it a day
Hey hey hey, that’s nvidia’s job!!!
I could easily tie that back into our conversation of exceptionalism here and how our car industry has convinced nearly every American another highway is the method and not, say, yknow, a domestic rail system that isnt solely for freight
LOL
We do freight rail very well here
And the northeast does have passenger lines
NEC, took it to work every day for a few years
All owned by Amtrak
Is wonderful
Yes. I do appreciate that about the US. I went on a deepdive about the transition to the highway only system we prefer here. I remember reading metrics like 100,000k+ miles of rail have remained abandoned since the 1900s
This is true
But also, we have to remember what killed the rail industry
Building 100,000 miles worth of rail worth abandoning
But the 1920s, so much of the country OVERBUILT on rail
That it killed the industry as a whole
I think more factors killed the industry, but yeah. I agree. I recall reading that the car lobby had lobbied the federal regulating bodies and that played into the death of the passenger rail industry. Taken with a huge grain of salt again, because I am not as educated as I would like to be on this particular topic, but I do remember having read that the margins for operation of passenger rail were so high that a lot of companies just stopped doing it due to said regulations
I don’t think it was just the car lobby
Increased regulations on all industries were felt across the country
We were soaring high for decades on the fruits of the Industrial Revolution
(the Interstate Commerce Commission, that is the body I was thinking of)
And then had to figure out how to make everything safe now that it was invented
From Wikipedia "With the proliferation of a system of highways built and owned by the state, operated at a loss and were not restricted by the requirement to make a profit, trucks began to eat away freight traffic and automobiles (and later airplanes, which were also subsided by the state via airports, air traffic control, etc.) devoured the passenger traffic."
That is tragic.
Agreed
But also, I don’t think I’d trust a United Airlines air traffic control
Net neutrality but with 300 lives at risk every 6 minutes
And now, passenger rail is state owned effectively by one entity, Amtrak
Yes, they are required to make a profit
But
It happened eventually
PANYNJ owns and operates all sorts of rail infrastructure in the NYC metro area
And they’re a government entity
I am not sure I totally understand. I place trust in the FAA, since, yknow, those guys HAVE kept American industry very safe. Albeit, there is misinformation out there, last year was not statistically different with the exception of the Blackhawk incident than the previous 10 years for example. But JFK definitely does throughput like 300 people every 6 minutes. I think I am misunderstanding the United Airlines point
With your comment about subsidies from the state for ATC
And airports being run by governments rather than companies
I wouldn’t trust companies to run an airport
Ahhh ahh, okay, I see. An operator that is motivated by profit is not going to be safe as a government operator who's sole job is to keep people safe
FAA isn’t a company, it’s a government agent and we’re seeing in real time the last couple months what happens when you start to kneecap it
And the reason airlines like UA can be safe is because the government demands that they do, lest they meet some hefty regulations
I understand now what you meant by that
Yeah
I don’t think I can really fundamentally change hearts and minds over discord
But just
1000% with you. The FAA layoffs makes my blood boil
I saw the well traveled Americans think we’re behind comment and had some thoughts on the matter
I think we do a lot of things very, very, very well, and simultaneously have room for improvement
Hopefully my points have been reasonable
I understand that the issue is for sure a very much more complex issue than what I had portrayed at face value but I still hold at heart that we are behind. I experienced better in countries whos economies we consider to be worse or at least not the size as ours perform better for there people, even in blatant oligarch forward capitalist countries that make even American capitalism look like the good guy (South Korea) and still do better in terms of public amenities
But your approach is much more friendly than calling me a dirty commie, which...I have been called this month...
All totally reasonable
I have found kind and courteous discussion far more productive and entertaining than name calling
I have always called my self a little more centrist, center left, if you will. Since I feel safe mentioning that here. But I have felt ousted and even made out to be an enemy by my right wing counter parts, even in by my own childhood best friends. The kind of misinformation and the propaganda being spun against my point of view does make me feel incredibly displaced in my own country
I do find the 2am bunch-of-disgruntled-Americans-grumbling chats to be cathartic when they don’t devolve into slapfights. I think it’s fair to remember that in polite conversations you aren’t looking to “win”
I have been called a Jew shill by someone I would never expect it from since the coming of this administration (I am not btw), I have been called a dirty commie by a non-friend right leaning acquiantance, and I have been given the cold shoulder by my own friends for my views since this administration. SO I cant help but feel that there is media overtaking of certain points of views that is convincing people of these things on enmasse
I very much appreicate @novel cedar. A productive conversation without shutting me out, and vice versa
My pleasure
I’m just a Democrat who fits firmly within the bounds of contemporary politics
Make the country better, give Americans more freedom to be things and do things, give other countries more freedom to be things and do things
My best friend said my views aren't all that valid since, my education from university was "bought out by the woke agenda" and cited, I kid you not, Joe Rogan
SO that is the bar I feel like I have to work with these days. I just think this adminstration is incredibly hostile. I don't think right leaning people in general are hostile like that, but I DO feel that the hostility IS permeating the right point of view in a clear manner that is progressively more hostile over time rather than getting better like I expected going into this administration
I WANT American Exceptionalism, I WANT to be the best, but we are not at that point in my opinion
The right wing “sphere” sees the 2nd Trump admin as a revenge tour so it doesn’t surprise me the hostility has gotten worse, not better
No country ever can be, there’s always a new high to pursue
Always a new civil rights bill to sign
A new way to recognize gender minority marriages
A new way to help countries less fortunate than us
Mmm like slashing huminitarian AID 😭
And, if rather than absolutes we’re talking about ranking, we definitely have come out on top in certain points
If I were a baby boomer, there’d be no better place to live than here during my generation’s youth to middle age
Freight is one of those, I used to believe was awful but it is specifically passenger rail with a few exceptions. I think we still, in general, do offer great civil liberties. I feel proud that my Korean partner's parents were able to come here and build their American dream buy running a sustainable business here. Things like that, which, last I checked, western European countries are typically not known for their welcoming nature in that particular regard
Yup
American entrepreneurship is unrivaled
American technological innovation is pretty top tier
Don’t forget DARPA licenses ASML their tech
And TSMC would be nothing without ASML
And that Tim berners Lee would have no internet, not TCPIP, no Personal computer to work with to make the WWW
I hope it remains this way, to be honest. I mean, we can point to obvious foreign turned American entrepreneurship. I am NOT a fan of Elon but if there is a demonstration of the American dream (granted he was a trust fund baby who drove to school during apartheid in a Rolls Royce but that aside) it would be him.
Yup
I have been concerned about brain drain from our nation, and I do not know if the American outlook on education is necessarily a positive one
I’d point more towards the people he bought out and muzzled from calling themselves founders but to each their own
I still believe at the end of the day
At least until a few weeks ago
Our grants are the biggest
Our facilities are some of the best
Our pay is the highest
Hey, Jobs did the same thing to Wozniac but Apple isnt exactly the harbinger of ethics of a good company.
I cannot tell you how stressed I am about my student aid at the moment. Or what the outlook of my current loans is with the rhetoric.
Wozniak still gets historical credit as being involved at least
Absolutely
Or even just the facilities at the university I am going to attend or the previous one i have attended who have relied on aid to be able to sustain fantastic amenities
And at least he’s still alive
I understand your anger and for the sake of the mods and the conversation, I have muted some of my stronger opinions for sure. You are welcome to DM if you need to vent LOL. I am not looking for an echochamber by no means but I am very angry about some of the things that have been said about me because of the current administration. My education being invalidated because of the woke agenda is a current admin rhetoric 1000% and the conspiracy theories being backed by it, or at least, validated by the current admin is astoundingly concerning to me
Layoffs from federal agencies is being fueled by conspiracies and the moves to outright block the information dissemination is disgusting to me. But that is as far as I'll go to voice a stronger stance
Would you believe me if I said I’m also being polite about my opinions? xD
Yes
Like I said, for me, its the things i have been called which have left an awful taste in my mouth about the rhetoric of the current admin. it speaks volumes on the path they want to forge. I dont even want to get started on the attorney general strong arming, or the clear breaches of constitution that are blatant but I digress
Anyway, the new hoodie looks neat :D
The brain drain from America?
in 3 years if schools survive students will not be affected by covid anymore
we hope anyway but .... internet brain drain is less predicable
we still know sweet fuck all about the effects of covid on toddlers and preschoolers
True enough but I do hope we can get this handled one way or the other ... Even if people don't want to force vaccines
Brain drain from Canada to America?
I've experienced quite a bit of waryness at best, and resentment at worse for promoting post secondary education. I'm all for trade schools, community colleges, and universities. But when it comes to the internet, I feel like theres a bit of a "dunning Kreuger effect" in that anything worth knowing is easy, its just a matter of commitment, effort, and using the internet to make up for whatever you 'dont know'.
Resentment of instutional knowledge and 'experience' that isnt either blue collar or finance.
Healthcare for one. But I've seen it especially in tech now.
"I enjoyed my time in college but it wasnt worth the cost"
I think Linus mentioned that hes open to his kids pursuing a college education but not holding them to it, as Yvonne got a degree but Luke and Linus are both dropouts.
Plus over time the value of it is seen as decreasing, which leads to the second point, should a government be involved in making higher education affordable?
I was reading a headline about how the "partnership" between goernment and tech has been subverted, how government spending that initially supported big tech into getting to where it is, now seeks to supplant it.
To quote I think one Roblox creator I believe "Well we created the modern world, why shouldnt we run it"
Wild thing for someone from roblox to say
Linus mentions on WAN show that, at least in his sense hes okay with paying taxes, as long as he gets a return/value to say
We've come quite a bit from "Coders and hacking culture can fix the world"
Because no one elected you :D
why are the smart ones always the dumbest
"evolution is about becoming the best"
"Money is a form of evolution"
My guess is a sense of unlimited growth and self percieved importance.
Once you have 'everything' and manage a sucessfull buisness why not seek to run entire regions
I hope that's ex-best friend now 💀
Or that you were able to talk some sense into him
some people aren't beyond saving
You know it's the 2020s (and its late 2010s pilot) when politics have only morphed into making things somewhat worse, rather than better, for humanity
I presume the same--as the far-right would call it--"woke agenda" is the same level of "woke" as "You're such a misogynist!" in YU-NO's US English dub by Funimation in 2019
and also that the meaning of "woke" seems to almost be overshadowed by what could be called "far-right slang" instead of its true meanings it originally had
War Thunder (just kidding!)
URL for reference was omitted, so just look up "Funimation Alters YU-NO Dialogue “You’re Such a Misogynist!”" for more context on that)
It was part of what some critics would say was Funimation's "politically-inclined leftist agenda" and the distributor "altering dialogue to pander to feminists and those who don’t even watch anime", which dated back to as early as 2015, probably as a reaction to the climate since Gamergate in 2013-2014.
To be fair, if the company (now known as Crunchyroll, LLC since 2021) also offered a straight dub that's close to the original source material, alongside what I'm gonna call the "woke dubs" for both YU-NO, Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid and a few other titles said to have been affected by this, the backlash would've been... lessened?
I dunno. I know ADV Films did that with their dubs of Oh! Super Milk-Chan over two decades ago, but that was probably because they could, and ADV wasn't in a climate as sensitive and what-it-is as Funimation was a decade later.
I'll just say that it's complicated and I'm probably not as, uh... qualified to talk about some of these things as much as anyone else, per se
There's probably some political historians and anime localization historians who could explain this a heck of a lot better than I could
I mean, Funimation did get some mentions on The WAN Show in the past, when Crunchyroll was ending Funimation NOW, effectively taking away users' access to digital copies on Funimation NOW, and also not doing anything like transferring Funimation NOW licenses to matching YouTube (Google Play), Apple TV (iTunes), or whatever licenses
so, it's... kinda-WAN-related
and Crunchyroll was even mentioned earlier on The WAN Show in March 2015, and sponsored Linus Tech Tips in 2016 on a Zotac GT 730 video, years before Sony Pictures acquired them (and predating Sony's Funimation buyout in 2017)
but yeah, I'll just say this,
If you want to have a purist-friendly dub, whilst also wanting to do a dub that panders to the casual viewers & feminists, go for it as long as you offer both (along with literal translated subtitles for the original Japanese audio, too), and not just the latter only.
I know it's relatively old hat, but the basic point remains. It's always good to have options.
Being able to pick-n-choose
And now something completely different:
Finally redone and framed LTTstore.com
(Sadly no longer available, but it's a really nice puzzle set nevertheless ❤️ )
time to move to firefox
LibreWolf is a great browser.
Please note: I don't watch YouTube on my browser, idk if it's still as shit on Firefox as it used to be
i watch youtube in firefox all the time. no issues.
I also have youtube premium tho so i don't need to worry about them throttling me because of adblock
I have been using firefox exclusively as my only browser for everything except development (compat testing with chrome / edge), since roughly 2018.
I have never had any of the issues people complain so much about
same, but since 2021.
the only issue ive had is with a single website blocking firefox for no reason, and that was fixed with an extension that makes the user-agent appear to be chrome
pretty much this ^^
my biggest issue with the browser turned out to be a windows bug related to boot image corruption (gonna happen on a 2 year old install eventually), and a reinstall of windows fixed the problem
I think I had some issues with some captcha, such as the one ASUS ROG Elite uses, and that was something where I needed to disable every extension and the built-in Enhanced Tracker Protection, and then I had like a 20% chance of getting the login to work, so I just used Edge. No other major websites had any issues (only like, very old, weird encryption ones, and only on occasion, so yeah, not YT or Twitch or such).
Also been on Firefox since my Linux days from around 2010 and on Firefox for Windows since 2015
Using Firefox since v0.7 and never had a reason to switch
Does Pegi still matter? lol
In the sense that you have to enter your birthday to buy a game on steam
Otherwise idk, does anyone check those anymore? We don't really have game boxes to put them on in 2025.
Yeah, I was surprised to see there is even a legal battle to be had here. I know there are parents that do care but overall, it seems like a really futile, outdated system that does not really matter for most young gamers
Probably biggest issue for them is on the mobile side and parental controls.. also might affect advertising and such too..
pegi is still a legit organization even if no one cares anymore
they have a book to play by
.
Framework 12 is the new laptop, other is a refresh of the 13 iirc
I don't understand why the framework 12 exists
Why not add a touch screen to the 13?
It's a 2-in-1. Personally I wouldn't pay the extra price for that over a normal laptop (same with a touchscreen, I hate them in laptops, though I assume for that they could just offer two versions with different screens).
So my assumption would be it's a split market.
couldn't they sell a different hinge and screen and still issue the same frame?
¯_(ツ)_/¯
I think it'd be an entirely redesigned chassis regardless
and they ended up on 12" for whatever reason
i mean they could just sell a touchscreen verison of the 13"
like they are doing with the 2.2k display and the 2.8k display
I think that's a different issue though
Like yes, agreed. But for the 2-in-1 I think it has to be a seperate product regardless of size.
'cus it's not as simple as laptop + touch screen
full diy now
holy shit the hx370 main board is 1500 cad alone
thats how much i paid for this 7640u laptop
presumably the framework 12” is going to target chromebook/lower end windows laptop market share
nirav said something about the target audience being high school students right?
I believe so, yes
If i needed another laptop for basic stuff, i would def buy it
but silly me became a graphic designer so....
Do only ASCII art and it won't be a problem.
hmmm clients may not want that lol
The amount of graphic design clients for ASCII art are probably very, very low
What are the statistics on this? ASCIIng for a friend
already lost a boatload of clients to canva
AI ruining everything for artists?
its more "hey i need a invite done, i just use this template" so i'm down to doing 3 wedding invites a year, instead of 20+
so yeah, plus other "canva artists" have taken over and are doing it for much cheaper than those of us who have more costs going on to pass on, luckily photography hasn't been inpacted too much yet
I a lot of the demand for artists are being displaced by using AI yes
I think nvidia's Q4 earnings call is going pretty well
It could confuse owners trying to replace screens of their laptops.
I would guess that the normal motherboard does not have the additional connection needed for the digitizer.
So then you'd need to offer motherboards with the connect, and ensure that customers know they can't buy a touchscreen to upgrade their non touchscreen model
I feel like if you're buying a framework you have to be trusted to be able to read "touchscreen" in the product name
like I know they make it easy, but it's a DIY product
tbh i would be surpised if they didn't offer two screens, one touch and one without touch
Because it's not the framework 13. It's an entirely different market.
They basically made the perfect laptop for schools lol
They’re definitely targeting the “high end Chromebook” market with the 12
The stylus is neat, could be handy to use as a drawing tablet for school digital art classes or something.
tbh for most students that need a basic windows machine and don't mind spending a decent amount of money to last them, that would be a good deal
Something for Linus to swoon over on Friday
I’m getting there. Playing through the Spotify archives till I get to current.

any word on different wan schedule today?
nothing out the ordinary
thanks
At this rate I’d just bookmark https://whenplane.com, it’s usually the second place that gets updated when something abnormal happens schedule-wise. (Discord is almost never the first place)
I'll put it on my laptop
I have Twitch notifs for the LinusTech channel enabled, so I usually get pinged (in the dead of night because I’m fast asleep) when the pre-show starts. If the show’s ever early enough for me to watch it live then I’ll often find out from a post in the YouTube channel’s Community tab
It only really comes in useful for the pop-up build streams during the week
When modmat?!?
Linus Gym Tips, lets goo!
Who's this Toby (Tobey?) Finklestein (Finkelstein?)?
Does anyone remember that video ~3-4 years ago LTT released that included that photo sharing website that you could just enter in any string and it would find a random photo?
Man, I really do not like that shirt
It's two different designs, horribly combined and clashing
on the labs blog post, if i have the tab open, switch to youtube, watch want for a bit, then switch back and scroll, the scroll action takes a while to happen 🤔
after that can just scroll no problem
probably browser issue
lol, it is actually a chromium thing, tested across chrome and a few other chromium based browsers while firefox seems to be fine
not going to bother checking with servo or ladybird
anyone got a link to the video they mentioned about correcting what they said about the placebo effect?
hopefully this isnt against any rules, if it is, sorry, please delete this message
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K3pS94xlGVI
i think thats the video
thx
also i make no claims to if its legit, the contents of it, etc. havent watched it
I have reiterated some of the stuff they said. so i feel obligated to correct what i said🙄
i guess i should have verified it first
🤓 I loved red alert/generals/c&c
I still play them. Got the re-release for $15 years back from BB
what was linus agreeing to, but not going to say?
sex work
ah, makes sense (also thanks)
Trator Linus.. Shoulda taken them to Canada Wonderland rather than USA :p
super depressing company trip to Marineland
But... 🎶 Everyone loves Marineland 🎵
Except the person who sung that.. she hates them
did they talk about mozilla changing the tos?
they said on preshow they probably won't because it's boring
(idk if they ended up talking about it anyway, I haven't been live)
its after dark, so done with topics (unless it is a merch message)
Basically they said Mozilla did a bad job bring up the TOS change, and then did a worse job responding too it.. but its not a big deal to them cause its no different than most other browsers.. but they didn't dive into it deeply.. just in passing..
i see, thank you
true
I'm probably too late in any event, but is it possible to ask questions for the WAN show here? I was hoping to ask if LTTStore would consider applying the current sale to orders including those items which are still waiting to ship since December because of the commuter backpack delays? It's painful to see something I paid $100 being sold for $40 when mine remains undispatched
they dont see this channel, prob email support
that ending lmao
RIP, figures. Thanks for letting me know! Have a very Linus day
+1
or ping nick about that since he would know more
on twitter
since support was swamped i believe
next week I will just buy another offsite bag and add a merch message asking them to discount my previous offsite bag that shipped after the sale started
Auto generated subtitles sometimes take hours or days to become available for some videos, regardless of length. Some channels I watch regularly have ~5-10min videos posted days ago that lack auto-generated subtitles.
Ahhh interesting, I didn't know that. Thank you
the longest wan show ever (5h 16m: https://youtu.be/s-llzV_3LaE) has auto-generateed subs on it.
im pretty sure all of the wan shows (at least from the past few years) got auto-generated subs. It is just not instant.
Any idea who from Shopify was in studio with the awards?
anyone else notice the 1,000,000 order milestone sticker says 100,000?
nevermind, that is the 100k order milestone box, lol, my bad
Active cooling for the 12VHPWR is probably necessary xD
Regarding 5:41 of the latest WAN show: Linus, I thought you said that in the case of prices like $549 and $499 you were gonna call them $550 and $500 respectively.
I understand you wouldn't do that on lttstore.com, because you're actually trying to sell stuff there, but when reviewing products or reporting on pricing, it would be nice if you kept up that commitment.
PS: I tried to comment this under the video (even without mentioning lttstore.com, to make sure I don't end up in a URL filter), but the comment got removed immediately.
I think it depends on context.. if reporting a MSRP then they go with the actual number.. when doing a general build or something they go with the rounded number.. Plus I could see Manufactures getting bent out of shape about "incorrect pricing"..
Hell could even be part of the agreement for them getting seeded stuff to test for embargo day..
Hi
Gottem xD
lol
The electrical engineering side of my brain wants to say this smells like the original 12VHPWR connector implementation was not thoroughly tested prior to release. After all, why would you ever need to change the length of the pins a simple power delivery connection? Shouldn't it have been reliably safe upon release? 🤔
I give the benefit of the doubt, I think it WAS tested, but tested under ideal conditions, not real-world tests, so the fundamental flaws never became apparent..
speaking of fundamental flaws
you'd think with all the stories of the connectors failing when stressed at an angle
sapphire would have used their logic and put the connector facing the exit point from the shroud
instead of offset by 90 degrees.
IMO, testing in a vacuum isn't real testing - if you're not testing X thing under real-world conditions (to the best of your abilities - us humans cannot possibly test literally everything), are you even testing properly? 🤔 I'm likely jaded from too many botched internal technical rollouts / upgrades / changes at places I've worked.
Testing real world is one of those things that just about every group that does testing has to learn once.. cause they come out with the idea of the perfect repeatable test that will save everyone so much time, and they forget people are iditiots, both the users and the ones making the parts they are plugging in..
that thing is a fucking brick lmao
Most GPUs are
Once you're a 4 slot card I guess you can put the connector wherever you want without worrying about space XD
fr though, AIBs finally using their AIB status to make a design change that makes sense? wild.
4.5 hour wan show woooo
As a non-engineer who works more in creative fields, your line of thought still makes way more sense than the approach "testing in a vacuum". I don't use my $$$$+ camera equipment in perfect conditions, it can be 110F+ day here in Dallas, or a monsoon season in Kyoto, Japan, and I would still have expectations that my camera would still function as advertised at the end of the day. They say it is weather sealed, it better be damn weather sealed. IF it says it has better XYZ, it better god damn have better XYZ. The perfect testing conditions are the most extreme conditions you expect your consumer product to go through. So to think that the 12VPHWR power connector somehow slipped through the cracks in rather mundane, as expected conditions are somehow melting, or at minimum malfunctioning at said conditions says everything. I don't think there is any benefit of a doubt to give as Ryoken was saying considering that nearly every malfunction reported so far have largely not been user error, and down to literal manufacturer inadequacy.
the prices these cards are selling at, they can't be testing in the vacuum, this is a price range where its right to expect top performance, just like with my camera. I would expect the card to run the way it advertises, any less or any power issues, its at fault of the designer and builder of the card, not the end user.
now if i was to push it beyond its designed capabilities i can understand problems.... but right now team green is harder and harder to want to support and i'm begging AMD to come out with a solution that works well for those of us on Adobe.
I'm... so tired
I had to read that over and over. I feel for Americans. I’m tired for you guys over here in nz.
Yeah, it's just... as much as I want to complain there's not much to be done about the tailspin right now. Kinda in the "made the bed, now lie in it" stage until all this starts to make things untenable for people...
...and then the modern definition of Google Doctor emerges
this is quite sad.
I wouldn't be affected by this anyway since I'm not a yankee nor do I live in yankeeland, but I'd love if it meant I don't have to pay my psychiatrist 360 bucks every other month just to get my ritalin prescription.
Hopefully something happens to make it easier on you. I'mma just sit here in the mosh pit at loopyland until further notice. xD

Another W for VHS gang
Waited till Noki uploaded the timestamps for the recent WAN Show
Was just curious what was there in the bonus bin items, and right now only the sticker packs and the ABCs of gaming is available
Could anyone tell what was available before?
Controller ornaments
https://www.lttstore.com/collections/fus
I think everything here was in stock at the beginning of the sale other than the water bottle misprint
Products placed in this collection will appear on the Bonus Bin in the cart. Products in this collection will have their product form altered with a notice that they are a free item and that there can only be 1 of them in the cart, all other standard product form rules apply. If there is already 1 FUS item in the cart
actually, it looks like the gpu ornament sold out the day before the sale started
and both animal sticker packs a few days before that. So mainly the book, dead pixel sticker sheet, and the controller ornaments alongside the normal 2022/2023 sticker packs
ohk
oh ok thanks for the info!
yw 🙂
GPU ornament had already sold out as it started, but yes, all but water bottle were in the bin at the time.
nvm, you checked the DB 😂
Chiseled into stone
LOL
Last week was a long wan huh
It was glorious
discord ipo could be interesting
That is not a stock I would consider buying.
But, prepare for ad-pocalypse and monetisation guru
I mean I wouldn't even pay for Discord so why would I think it's a good investment? haha
yea are they even profitable yet lol
it also just seems like a bad time in the markets for an ipo
Well, theyre not bankrupt
true
It really is
Even defense contractors are struggling for share price at the moment
well time to start preparing to migrate my communities elsewhere
Serious question: With so much of the business LTT is based on reliant on technology and hardware sold in USA, is there consideration of setting up a USA branch for reviewing usa tech to avoid the tariff issues of operating in Canada? Obviously this assumes the Tariffs last and won't just be cancelled in time;
pretty sure they are too small to do that, at least for now
and would also be a pain since all thier testing equitment and people are in canada
Wouldn’t they want one in China first in this case?
honestly both even just a few people each would probably be an interesting expansion compared to Linus having to fly so many crew to events in each country which i imagine gets costly the more often it happens;
Also to be clear saying this as a Canadian myself, its not that i want the show to expand into USA just that it might become the only realistic way financially to review products if Tariffs across the world be it china or usa or any other nation increase the price of importing electronics;
If the products are sponsored/sent for review for free that's probably less an impact of course. this is mostly in cases when they have to buy products out of pocket to review them;
Maybe ‘expansion’ isn’t the right term? Perhaps more of a foreign correspondent(s) to LTT?
that's closer to what i was envisioning yes;
words are hard lol;
one of the many reasons is the different tax laws, employment and buildings.
sounds crazy but in the grand scheme of things, LTT is a very small fish
What exactly is your logic there?
In most videos the cost of the product is mostly insignificant, if they even bought it
And even in those cases how many of the products are actually made in the US, and not Asia?
There’s almost nothing that forgoes a step in SEA, and unless a lot of additional intermediary steps move into the US to support the semiconductor fabs that are currently there I don’t see that changing.
Aren't the rates only like 20% for China and 25% for Canada? That's like, nothing. While no tariffs is, without a doubt, infinitely superior, these rates are nowhere near as absurd as people are making it out to be. Then again, I do live with a 60% + 17% on price+shipping...
first world budget take
Literally zero of them. There is fuck all relevant tech made in the US
Intel does have their fabs and I do believe that includes packaging for their silicon so… Intel CPUs probably count. GPUs almost certainly go overseas for board assembly though
https://revolt.chat self hosted option for the future?
Revolt is the chat app that's truly built with you in mind.
Maybe, though unfortunately I feel it’s going to go the same way as like Reddit and Twitter did where a minority move but a majority stay. Time will tell though
if we're going self hosted i would suggest matrix client or simply LTT forums;
Matrix having the added benefit of e2e encryption;
Wasn't there some drama with Matrix? Something about not being actually federated or smth?
But unless the enshitification gets really bad I'd imagine they won't actually move this server to an alternative
Guilded existed for years and I know literally nobody except myself who used it.
It was arguably better in many ways too, though worse in many others
as soon as they added the rolblox account req they killed it
It was dead long before that

Linus probably will have a lot to say tomorrow regarding availability and pricing rug pull for 9070
my brother got a hold of the XT version this morning at 3am NZT and the price went up by almost $100 after he ordered it and went out of stock.
damn
only 30 at the price he paid
the thing is the market has said to the GPU makers that we will pay the higher prices.

GPUs are leaving shelves as fast as they can be put on them, price be damned, by someone. Maybe not persnickety gamers buying a card, probably computer-heavy business ventures buying pallets.
hence the market has said to the makers here charge us this much, we'll pay!
which for the rest of us sucks
NZD
ladies and gentleman, presenting almost the cost of my camera gear.
eBay is probably the best spot to shop for GPU (singular) at this point, not to pay scalpers for this year’s card, but to pay scalpees for almost-same-performance last year’s card
7900 XTX
would be the top spec of last gen.
7900 GRE / XT is +/- 9070, XTX is +/- 9070 XT
Maybe you can talk an Aussie on Gumtree to chuck it across the strait?

but man this is tempting

xD
so i can kinda see it
it will all work out 🙂 the 2070 still has life, i just want to replace it before it dies if it dies suddenly, i have a 5800x and well... that doesn't have a graphics card
So, I wonder if this will be a topic on tonight's show: https://www.techspot.com/news/107039-western-digital-exits-ssd-market-shifts-focus-hard.html
Seems odd for me that WD would go all-in on spinning rust.
i love my WD black nvme and was literally about to purchase another one, but i guess i'll go with samsung or someone else
Disguising?
i mean, you could buy sandisk black or something like that
if they come out
shhhhhh
true true
they're disguising as a drive company ig? idk man
🤷
Yeah, I was just confused by your use of the word "disguising".
i meant disgusting but i clearly can't spell
also that's not even a good word for it haha
i just don't like it
I would love to hear them discuss this Zeus gpu from bolt graphics that claims to be able to beat a 5080, though the performance they suggest beats the 5090, they claim to be capable of full path tracing at 120 fps in 4k with no ai fake frames somehow.... Very bold for a startup coming out of nowhere.
I bet either it's totally bogus or if by some insane miracle it does anything close to these claims that Nvidia buys them out before they can go to market.
it's totally gonna be a scam lmao
they'll crowdfund some money and then vanish off the face of the earth
I agree. But still curious to see what they are going to say at GDC
Would anyone else be interested in a segment about dumb phones? There's been a trend in young people switching to dumb phones in order to take back their day. Id love to hear what Linus and Luke have to say about it as people who are extremely dialed in to the tech scene.
It’s been brought up on WAN a couple times I think
Most recently, there was the discussion sparked by the app that dude made that requires literally touching grass to access social media apps
Linus also ran out of the set for a bit to bring a piece of grass to the WAN set
but I think that grass touch was related to the AMD and Valve PR nightmare involving Counter-Strike 2-related VAC bans due to the messy way AMD's AntiLag Plus was made
I just saw this https://www.tomshardware.com/pc-components/gpus/startup-claims-its-zeus-gpu-is-10x-faster-than-nvidias-rtx-5090-bolts-first-gpu-coming-in-2026?
any word that wan will start at an unusual time today?
How often does Wan show start at a european friendly time? For me it usually starts at 2AM and I would love to watch it live sometimes
It’s happened I think twice in the past year that the show’s started during their workday, usually because one of them has to catch a flight
What does Whenplane say?
says 2 hours 51 min
man i was just looking at pizza delivery and like half of the places near me offer anchovies as a topping
that's just criminal
geez what is it with pizza delivery anymore, i have to order on doordash?
Brit moment.
Is The WAN Show late? Yes. How late is The WAN Show? Probably very! See a countdown to when WAN is supposed to start, as well as how late it's been before.
(they have historical stats)
In some cases it's cheaper for them to just use doordash instead of paying a driver. Thankfully all the places worth ordering pizza from near me still have drivers, though I don't like delivery in general. It's pretty expensive...
Ohh love that. Thanks for the share.
We live!
Found my fix for the spotty FP stream!
Had Youtube stream playing PiP on top of the FP viewport so I have the stability & realtime CC of the YT stream while having FP chat
damn thats a thick side bar
If you haven't already, I'd recommend you get the coordinates and window size (sharex is probably thre easiest way) and add a zone for it in powertoys
(For the pip, ofc)
this morning i admitted to my therapist that I spent $189 on LTT merch last week
but i got free shipping
is linus' voice deeper than normal?
I dont think so?
Innertia is basicaly the force that will leave you when you hit something solid
How much of that force would go into the thing you hit, to move it back in kind.
So... Knockback?
That's how I think of it
Remember when Linux stole that tri-monitor laptop

havent we seen multiple screen laptops before?
I think there was one that basically had one of those dual folding monitor attachments built in
There was definitely one with a small (but functional) screen above the keyboard, and that one that was a foldable with all screen and you could either cover the bottom half with the detachable keyboard for 'laptop mode' or separate the keyboard for bigger screen shenanigans. I think Linus did vids on those.
interesting bilibili tabs sir
real miku stan
This is a pretty accurate description.
This, not so much. This is a collision, which is pretty much conservation of momentum
Edit: removed bc I'm pretty sure I said something wrong, it wasn't really passing the Fourier analysis when I reread it but I can't pinpoint what's wrong and I don't feel like going back to my dynamics book, the trauma is still too recent (<3 Lagrangian mechanics tho, ya beauty)...
Dan Show?
basically inertia is the momentum you retain from motion, also why you will be sitting in a driving car, and also why we need airbags
"i'm bi" — luke
That's a good idea, probably will do in the current century or next
Wonder where Linus had to be to make this week’s show one of the shorter ones
Bye…. Bye…..bye bye … I was laughing as they closed
Inertia is an innate property of matter defined by its resistance to CHANGES in motion whereas Momentum is a quantification of that object's motion at a given time
an entire generation of Americans quietly yelling INERTIA IS A PROPERTY OF MATTER BILL BILL BILL BILL at the WAN Show this week

Today in “people are assholes”
how do these kinds of people exist in a workplace and get away with this shit
like the fuck
Well, hopefully the "get away" part will resovle itself soon.
yeah
Yeah, but like, how does it happen at all?
I can't imagine something nearly that blantantly problematic occurring anywhere I've ever worked and not resulting in immediate action.
Well you see, people are trash.. for further research check the news, or the internet. You can extrapolate from there. 😐
And when they get power and money, it deems that doesn't lower their urges to be trash..
most people are great, but it only takes a very small majority to screw everything up, and also to cause others to act in ways they normally wouldn't
It's Ubisoft so the answer is, once again, that Yves Guillemot is a piece of shit
I was looking forward to the Dan show
Brilliant
Surprised it's not posted yet
Tbf, rights being a detriment to american consumers is the current stance of the government. So who knows 🤪
Well this is a 180 of what I expected based on the results in Nov.
Yeah
I wouldn't put too much thought into it, its got a decade or more of legal battles to go
Have they talked about the AI that the LLT store support uses? Im curious what they are using for this. I work in support and want to learn more about it
They mentioned it when it was new and how it's basically just there to answer easy questions before passing it off to support, and that it wouldn't be replacing real people as support. I don't recall if they said what they were using though.
Easy questions make sense for a good AI model, while more complex questions would warrant LTT Store staff chiming in to help
AI cannot replace humans, but augment them
could it be salesforce? the cloud logo one?
More like having a FAQ page that doesn't require you to search for the question you want an answer to, the AI searches it for you
Seeing as no one ever searches the FAQ anyway, seems like a win ¯_(ツ)_/¯
Oh it can for sure help. I just wanted to know what they were using because I think it can get very good at solving common issues. Or at least triaging them for staff.
Oof https://arstechnica.com/google/2025/03/googles-10-year-old-chromecast-is-busted-but-a-fix-is-coming/

No
A bug stopped it casting properly
"bug"
It's being patched at some point, supposedly
Google killing products intentionally and on purpose in the same article? Typical.
A bug, hmm I “see”
The "bug" is someone forgot they set a fixed 10 year certificate with no plans to update it. Unless they intentionally let it expire to kill the product off, which obviously isn't a bug.
Yeah I had to deal with a piece of software that had that feature. It was a current one that a lot of churches used for their services. On a Friday night a certificate expired and the software wouldn’t run. That company had to run into work late on Friday night and work throughout the night to get it to work again
It’s subscription based and a lot of us had to warn our pastors. I was up early on a Sunday morning to get it patched. (Friday American time/Saturday nz time)
Pretty easy to forget that the cert was only valid for 10 years tbh
The people that decided that probably don't even work there anymore and didn't set any sort of reminders
Also kinda a "holy shit people are still using this thing" moment
We have two.... Because my parents are cheap and refuse to spend money to improve their experience
We got them in 2016
They are horrible and slow now
Youtube randomly cuts out back to the home screen
Sometimes when casting wan it cuts out
Or disconnects from my phone but keeps playing
And then cuts out
So it's played like 30 minutes that my phone doesn't know about then I have to guess where it was up to
Yeah, but someone who put that in place shouldn't even need someone to look at it to know they need a process for maintaining that.
They don't know how long those would be sold. And it's a Google product, not a startup. (granted that doesn't mean shit when they kill projects left and right)
Real. But it sounds like some of them managed to maintain working order enough to still have a strong userbase ¯_(ツ)_/¯
Knowing what the Chromecasts are meant to be, this isn't surprising at all
No doubt google doesn't put much effort into these and doesn't really want to make them at all
They're first party devices to show what google/Android tv can do
Just unfortunately they end up being overall the better devices for the price so everyone buys them

The Nvidia shield is too expensive and no one else really bothers trying properly
They sold them for 9 years with 3 generations. I don't think google should be able to pull the "we didn't mean for it to take off" excuse.
And I'd guarantee more effort was put into the 3rd gen and onwards lol
And yeah, they do happen to be a better option for the price. Whoops, sucks to suck google, you accidentally made a good product for once.
First gen was basically nothing, 2nd gen was when it actually became something
So once again, this isn't surprising at all
I genuinely have no idea, but that was the last gen before they killed the entire product line in 2022, as they do XD
10 years is a long fucking time for a device like this
The people that are still using them are suffering, as I described above
Please go buy one of the newer Google tv ones

Oh, sorry, not until 2024.
2022 was the most recent model release which added google tv stuff
before they switched to the google tv stick thing
Agreed. Too bad all those somehow still working devices are now bricked for no reason 😂
No, 3rd gen was the 2nd black circle
Then there was the new Google tv ones with the remote, which had a normal and 4k option
Then they killed the Chromecast name and replaced it with the tv streamer... A newer, bigger Chromecast
You say that as if they're not fixing it
they had 2 models that were "chromecast with google tv"
before comitting to the tv streamer
I mean they say they are. Maybe they will, hopefully.
Shouldn't have happened to begin with IMO.
What is the certificate even for?
I'd imagine they have to update the home app first to allow insecure connections and THEN update the firmware with the new cert
^ prolly
Everything that connects securely to the internet has certificates
Everyone always forgets about them when they're working
That reminds me I need to update mine
Well yeah... but every device you own handles updating that. Why would this particular device need a 10 year static cert?
It was connecting to the internet and everything.
I've seen my fair share of not working XD
but they were all on secure servers that needed manual intervention for various reasons
Alternate headline
iRobot may be iDead in iYear
Aren't there a million generic robot vacuums now? Doesn't surprise me.
Always thought the Amazon deal had gone through, apparently it was abandoned after regulatory intervention
Amazon doesn't need to own more random products for no real reason ngl 😂
I mean as someone who doesn't own one, idrc. But it's so random.
The big thing about Amazon owning iRobot would have been to acquire indoor maps of customer’s homes
Yeah
but I'm sure iRobot already sells that
Every smart product people choose to buy is already a vector for privacy invasion. Idk if it matters which company owns the smart vacuum mapping your house and shipping that data off to god knows where.
(Ideally none would have the data offsite, but I doubt iRobot commits to keeping it on device? I genuinely don't know.)
We all know about Eufy, just waiting for some kind of RoboRock scandal now
O NO
i wonder if there is any way to flash mine to be fully local
iRobot to me is just a Jon Bellion song
lol shots fired, take that apple

iRobot isn't on the supported list, sooooooo....no
Leave the door open and it’ll leave automatically :D
GL Little fella. That room is extra dirty
41 years of Nausicaa
Only seven months before The Terminator gets its anniversary
Both films released in 1984.
I consider Hayao Miyazaki and James Cameron oddly fitting contemporaries to each other
They've had at least four films come out the same year as each other.
1986 had Castle in the Sky and Aliens
1989, Kiki's Delivery Service and The Abyss
and 1997 with Princess Mononoke and Titanic
The latter two both also have IMAX releases in their history,
Mononoke is later this month from a native 4K restoration,
whereas Titanic had AI filters on top of its 4K scan (and presumably 4K DI they filtered) and some other things (and a 3D high-framerate conversion to boot)
(and there was also the 2012 3D conversion too, but anyways...)
Miyazaki has been fairly open about AI being a "slap in the face" to what he considers the human touch,
whereas Cameron finds it a neat toy that had been used in the newest prints of his older movies as he busily works on the next Avatar movies
Delaying the Avatar sequels a tad bit would probably help in having native 4K HDR prints with AI usage being toned down a tad, so it can look closer to video while still appealing to filmic purist videophiles.
Though there is something to be said about those transfers opening the doors to other studios following in his footsteps
the 2K-to-4K upscales that Jaws 3, The Sugarland Express, and Wallace & Gromit: A Matter of Loaf and Death had were subject to scrutiny and criticism due to what I would consider haphazard usage of these AI tools, instead of using some tender love & care on those tools and keeping it judicious.
If done correctly, AI filters (I.e., upscalers, patchers, etc.) can work out well, but as of right now, it has been abused and beaten like an axe instead of judiciously & sparingly used like a scalpel
David Fincher's use of AI in Se7en is an example of it done right.
You don't have to be an AI fanboy or a "tech bro" to see the advantages, as well as drawbacks, those tools have.
I hope Linus and Luke cover this in the next WAN show instalment

Following on from last week's discussion about rebates, and limited time MSRP's
it's explained what really happened in the video
This reminds me of the CD price fixing scandal of the 90s and 2000s in a way
Is this esentially NVIDIA and AMD's GPU equivalent to what happened with record labels and record stores in the 90s?
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CD_price_fixing
Between 1995 and 2000 music companies were found to have used illegal marketing agreements such as minimum advertised pricing to artificially inflate prices of compact discs in order to end price wars by discounters such as Best Buy and Target in the early 1990s. It is estimated customers were overcharged by nearly $500 million and up to $5 per ...

ai and ryzen chips get more margin. my current theory on the shortage ngl
Minisforum's mini PC with the AMD Ryzen AI models certainly speak to that
Review of the Minisforum AI X1 Pro from 2025! A new Windows 11 mini computer built around the beefy AMD Ryzen AI 9 HX 370 12-core processor, with 64GB RAM and the surprisingly capable Radeon 890M iGPU that gives it legit PC gaming possibilities. NEAT! Oh and it also does some Copilot AI stuff I guess.

would be a huge achievement if scalable
I really hope they don’t release the mod mat on tonight’s wan show.. my wallet can’t take that lmao
release it, my wallet is ready :P
I’ll be buying it anyways since I have a rather large need for it lol
What a shock wan show is late
lol
patiently waiting
I'm impatiently waiting
i'm patently waiting
damn still no thumbnail
i'll nail your thumb
i'm patiently imwaiting
Will we return to the glory days of 3-4hr late WANShows? We'll be back after these words from our Sponsor..
deleteme, odoo and server part deals
where wan show
You must be new.. there was a long period (years?) where 2, 3, 4 hrs late was not uncommon at all.. WANShow happens after their normal Friday work, which if you watch enough of the tech upgrade videos, often take place on a friday too..
eyy we've got a title and thumbnail!
yeah i have only been watching wan show live for about a year and a half
Come Join Me In Linus Town USA - WAN Show March 14, 2025
where linux (Linus)
Its been mostly the past year where they have been more ontime.. and a big part of that was several months of Luke needing to leave at a specific time for hiss birds..
yeah i remember when that happen
there is still nothing on twitch
Twitch live
YAY 🎉
Its on
Where is Linus this wan show?
asia
does LTT enables ads during wan show?
on twitch they have to I believe
Floatplane has no ads for LTT content
Youtube is dependent on whatever the status of your premium subscription is
I cannot speak to any other platforms since I don't use them
ive just noticed that everytime luke commended on his health i got a few second long drug ad
i was casting the pod from brave to my shield
lol, what platform is this?
that's actually hilarious if true
yes on every platform except floatplane.
they dont have to or they could make it very minimal but they choose to do almost the maximum. linus went over this a few months ago. he would change it to something lower and someone on his team kept changing it back and told him not to touch it. the twitch experience without a ad blocker is fucken horrible.
Twitch requires you to run ads
thanks. didnt know that
it seems my browser is out of date so that explains it
Their twitch stream used to be ad free, or only preroll.. but Colton changed it.. then Linus changed it back, and after a little back and forth of a couple of weeks Linus was told to leave the ads on.. I have ways to block ads on twitch, still after the pre-show I generally switch to youtube..
yea they ruined twitch stream. the ads are horrid.
fun fact about WAN. they stream it to so many places you're free to go almost anywhere else to watch it
or if you care so much about the pre show, for the low low price of 5 dollareydoos per month, you can watch the whole thing, pre show included, entirely ad free, and get access to a massive back catalog of exclusive content!
(im aware money is worth more/less depending on income and location and US$5 may be worth a hell of a lot more to someone in a developing country, however, if ads annoy you that much, watch anywhere but twitch and it'll be at least a marginally better experience)
Outside a starting ad I don’t recall ever getting a ad on YouTube(console)
I would rather watch on Twitch, cause I watch a fair bit on Twitch.. I'm mostly annoyed by how many ads they set it too.. The WANShow has, by FAR, the most ads per hour of any steam I watch that I'm not subbed too..
Colton must have set it to max..
Twitch is for pre-show only. For the actual show YouTube is far superior: you can pause.
Twitch and floatplane*
i switch to youtube when it goes live so i can pause
You can even get auto subs if you're munching on crisps or popcorn while watching
Hey Alexa shut down we don't need you anymore
and people think i'm weird for keeping that shit out of my home. Jokes on theeeeemmmm
Same. Just a skill issue tbh.
And this furthers Luke's decision not to have Echo products around his home
Something he mentioned when talking about the "free" spy of a TV called Telly
Is it just me that is getting kinda annoyed by Linus constant use of the wording Common Sense?
Every time he thinks something is stupid, he leans on those words... however, Common Sense to "who"? Every nation and even family have different values, especially in this multi cultural society.... Common Sense is as "common" as your likeminded group....
it was really frustrating cause that entire regulation rant with the badminton center he kinda showed his ass
there were some good comments from actual fire people on fp that pointed out why tf the regulation isn't actually dumb
just cause you don't understand why a thing exists doesn't mean it's silly. That style of thinking is exactly why things are gestures broadly
regulations are written in blood
I'm also of the opinion that if the building was fine without the doors, adding the doors shouldn't cause issues later on. Otherwise, the building should never have been fine before the extra doors were installed.
Though, admittedly, a system where the locks are disabled in the event of the fire alarm being triggered should also be sufficient in this case, so quite why the engineer was unwilling to compromise on it I'm not sure, maybe just a lack of knowledge on the existence of such an option
one of the good counterpoints made is that in a fire people can panic and if there's all these locked doors then people could go for them wanting to try them
And shit breaks, that's why fire screen doors have a local switch on top of the system wide closing. You'd need these doors to have a local override of the lock as a backup to the system wide unlock
Sure, that's all great and all, but the doors don't lead outside, they lead to another room, with less exits...
And maybe the fire is in the room they're running towards
I know these rules are in place for a reason, but the rules maybe need rethinking if they lead to situations such as this
Also, why are you trying to run to a random door that could be nothing? The actual exits should be clearly marked, it honestly seems better that they aren't able to get into a new space where they have to locate another exit and potentially navigate even more people.
^^ this, this right here.
Not sure about canada but in the UK all exit routes are mapped and are legally required to have a green, self illuminating (via battery or other means) EXIT sign, such that they can be located in a dark area, and obvious when fire is present
perhaps Linus should have mentioned that instead
explaining common sense in the way he's thinking could help the situation with the person saying the doors need those push handles
why do people love to pretend that mfers will act logically all day every day
Worth keeping in mind, Linus was just talking.. Its not like this was his pre-prepared presentation on Fire Exists and how they should work in his building.. so I don't see the issue with him not covering everything, and glossing over some stuff..
it's mostly just that it came off as a whiny "I don't understand it therefore it's dumb" segment. I'm a sailor where regulations are really fucking important even if you don't get why a given one exists so it's just irritating to hear an entire whiny rant thats just that
im not pretending they will, just stating a fact that the regulation leads to confusing situations in which adding more doors becomes a problem, even though it really should not
I work in food manufacturing, the regulations are written in blood. as with many regulated industries. some things we do make zero sense, even if they are for the safety of those eating what we make. still gotta do em, or it's my ass in jail
Do sometimes old regs persist past their usefulness and just be a headache sure. Do sometimes regs exist cause a competing business is doing some good ole government capture? Absolutely.
But it takes being pretty intimately familiar with a given thing to be able to truly understand when a reg might be actually silly and it's far more common that someone just doesn't know why it's there and is just whining.
pretty much
also the comparison to a bingo hall is not the same thing. There's a vast amount of power being used in a lan party compared to a bingo hall where people are just stamping cards.
do you know how much power the lighting and speakers in a bingo hall use?
I'll give you a hint, each of those XY moving head lamps uses almost as much power as a low to lower medium end gaming pc under load
(somewhere between 200 and 400 watts)
as far as i'm aware that shouldn't have much impact on zoning
i might be wrong, i come from a country and city where the council couldn't care less what you're doing so long as you pay up for building consent
this is also the lower mainland we're talking about where corporate lobbying absolutely exists and absolutely has an effect on how laws are made
correct me if im wrong, but weren't the zoning concerns around fire/safety concerns, not power usage?
the thing linus was talking about was crash bars being required on a door that didn't exist before
with increased power usage, there's an increased chance of fire happening
but I think whoever told Linus to add the push handles, should be able to answer why, or find someone who could answer why
yes, but the location of that power is on the other side of the doors
So did anyone find the link to enter to win the backpack ?

if you want to know how to get it, check the backpack page, and look at some of the product images 😉
Thnx
Just entered for the backpack may the odds be ever in our favor
same in US so i assume same in canada
i rolled 1
oh i know
pretty sure they said its 5 times at the bottom
Funny enough I haven’t seen those here till the building I work in got renovated
I’m curious how many rolled a 20 before then
Still had it open
Oh good, it's client-side JS which means you can likely just skip it.
I wonder how many entered

im sure at least a few
Less than the population of my city
idk i thought i'd leave the most random answer

Team 2070 here
still rocking an evga 1070
Heyyy framework I’m hoping they will release a laptop for my needs and my region when it’s time to upgrade my laptop
i should prob buy the framework 16 gpu instead of using a usb 1070
Dad used to spend 2k every three years and get a whole new setup. I’m looking at 3.5 foot the tower alone
To me that’s actually insane price wise
what is that
New Zealand dollar
oh
$3.5K NZD is quite a lot
Yes I’m a graphic designer
my condolences
read it as the typo "foot" instead of "for" and thought it was a tall tower (I.e., the HAF Stacker cases from Cooler Master)
That’s if I rebuild the whole pc from bottom
Nah I’ll keep using my 4000d it’s nice
Speaking of "3.5 foot", how tall is your current tower?
I'm guessing the common average is around 1.5 feet?
5080s are 3k
5070ti are 1.9k
ouch, even in NZD
are they even getting stock
the USD equivalents are probably similar oofs for the domestic North American market 5080 and 5070Ti cards
It's not cheap to get into graphics cards of a relatively new generation
Whatever height a corsair 4000d airflow is
1800 for 5080 essentially
Corsair says "466" with no suffix
appears to be 466mm
18.3465 inches according to Google, which is about a foot and a half
Let’s see… there’s some 5080s and 5 5070tis
Yeah it’s not huge but decent size, building within is great
Brother brought it for me, built in it and then brought himself one
the retailer i work for hardly gets stock and they last minutes when they do*
Yeah well we are in a recession and with prices like that I can see why things can take a while to move
Record numbers on working benefits now because their business closed
Seems like there's a recession every decade-ish or so
1 job opportunity, 2k people apply
The 90s had one, the 2000s had two, the 2020s is... weird
Yeah and since I am in a small country that has costs to do with shipping etc it doesn’t help
My commuter cost me $300 locally
Oh cool the US dollar is cooling down against nzd
usd is going down period
I knew it’s a mess but for a while it was going towards 1.80 per dollar
It was $1.77 when commuter was released
tarriffs prob had something to do with it going down
tariffs and import taxes that make it feel like Brazil in 2015 all over again
There's no native Brazillian Nintendo, nor a native American or Canadian Nintendo
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=FTYBpI2OiPI
Deja vu. It's like it's January 2015 (or even mid-2019) all over again!
Due to high tariffs and taxes, Nintendo is pulling out of the Brazilian market in South America.

Do you think they may be sold under a different name like those Chinese consoles
I have no idea if they'd pull an iQue for the USA or Brazil
Sega did have a partnership with Tec Toy in the 90s to distribute Sega product in Brazil, as well as licensed Sega-themed products
That's what led to the Master System having some late-release ports of Game Gear games in foreign markets--especially Brazil
I'd imagine Nintendo still dealt with tariffs in the 80s and 90s since they didn't really have a Tec Toy of their own
i guess will see if they do release it next month
(lol psych if you're in québec)
not framework, framwork
and they sell out
one of our major retailers got 12 5090s before launch
bear in mind the insanity that is import fees and shipping here, everything costs much more than the pure currency conversion
but those prices are still insane
and yet enough people still want the stuff
i've been surprised to see the number of 9070 xts we've been getting, and how for the most part they've managed to stay around $1300
ops
and civil service job cuts
we lost a pretty big portion of our hospital to layoffs, and now that many of them have moved to australia it'll be a tough job trying to get them back over here
My brother being one of them and he is extremely happy with the 3060ti to that
The amount of civil job and govt jobs is insane
Teachers are in high demand, I got asked to train as one….. I said heck no
It's funny how it's always the shit jobs that are in demand, even when the economy is fucked
Teachers are extremely overworked and underpaid
Yep, a few of my friends are and I feel for them.
As long as there are children needing taught, there'll be need for teachers.
That wasn't the point at all
We need teachers…. But the pay and conditions are not inviting people to teach the children that need them. New Zealand has a teacher and nurse/doctor shortage
you want people to be paid proportionally to their importance to society? get out of my way communist. Line must go up! /s
I know it’s not simple
i think they should be paid for all the work they do, not just the time spent in front of a class
i don't think anyone's under the illusion that 3pm comes around each day and that's all the work they have to do finished until the next morning

After many years of tirelessly searching for Xenosaga Pied Piper, the day has finally come where it has been preserved for everyone to experience. This is truly a monumental moment for Xeno Series fans as it was the only missing game in the series.

A 2025 Pebble cannot:
- Send SMS or iMessage text
- Reply or otherwise act on notifications
- Keep a connection alive if the user closes (swipes up on) the Pebble app
- Separate or mute watch notifications while a phone is in use
- Run a JavaScript engine on the watch OS, which complicates development
- Keep notifications hidden on an iPhone lockscreen and still show on a Pebble

That’s a lot of downsides. A ton.
I wouldn’t change my iwatch to that because those are major downgrades
Then again it’s hard once your iwatch iPhone to break that ecosystem
“Oh I am in a meeting swipe and DND one hour” both devices silent
oh those downsides are for IOS going by the article?
Both but some for iOS as well
