In a world where state actors are actively encouraging us to start using encrypted services, it is depressing to see a country that typically makes better moves than us Americans in terms of privacy lead an attack on our privacy.

#

No one should sugar coat it and call it as it is, an attack on privacy

The hope is that removing the encyption has the same effect on pushback that Linus wanted to happen by not selling iphones at all..

#

I doubt it will, but Apple is good at marketing, them telling every iOS user that your Gov't actions just made you less secure would have an effect, if they decided to go on the offensive..

Meanwhile the Feds in America have been actively putting out disclaimers encouraging American citizens to use encrypted services and engage in privacy practice referencing the recent Chinese-state linked hack on the US Treasury

I highly doubt the EU would ever do it, considering that currently there's an active transitioning for private information to have encrypted means to be accessed and every such information online is now required an MFA , if it didn't already have one. A lot of countries are currently rolling out govmnt digital solutions this year for this exact reason. Plus GDPR is both an EU and local government level law around here. The UK has never adapted it as a local thing, they just followed it as part of the EU until...well, we all know the history.

I would say most North Americans are relatively under travelled, at least not outside of NA itself. Most Americans who have travelled to other continents generally do hold the opinion America is behind in a lot of aspects in terms of the day-to-day quality of life amenities. I get SO much flack for saying it though. e.g. Our car centric infrastructure hurts us and we would be better for it to have more options other than vehicles, but that opinion is often met with hostility and misinformation about the real world application of these things in day-to-day life.

#

To me it speaks volumes to the amount of control American corporations in the narratives and opinions that are held here in the States. We would much rather just say "We are the greatest country in the world" and plug our ears when something is factually better in another country

Fr, some of the people giving creed to the idea we are somehow better than everyone else feels stuck in the 80s. I WANT America to be better, but that would mean giving way to social safety nets and investing taxes into things the individualist American would decry that it is somehow communism when it has nothing to do with that. the McCarthyism still runs strong in America, even if we dont want to admit it

McCarthyism is a component of it, but generic American exceptionalism “we’re #1 because we say we are” is not just red scare leftovers.

#

I think the main issue lies in the misunderstanding how the USA isn't really a country in the traditional sense, more of a federation. States do have vague liberties (but some are very firmly defined) and in general it all ends up being super confusing and often even controversial (honestly the whole DC vs Maryland situation is simply mind-blowing for me). So technically when you're moving states, which isn't uncommon, you're also adapting to a slightly different system every time. Yet you're also expected to treat it all as a single entity, since, well, in a sense it is.

#

But yeah, it's a bit more complicated, than just treating it as a single country, yet it is also vastly different from how the EU operates

#

But when a family from North Dakota wants to explore a new place and travel, you have Cape Canaveral, Detroit, LA, NYC, the Texas metro

And of course, most of the popular media (by revenue) features these cities, showcases their landmarks

tacit pebble
#

Ahhh I see, sorry i am not meaning to be confrontational, but yeah in general, I guess I am spiteful of the American exceptionalism. There are components, like earlier, McCarthyism is one I feel is more prevalent than many would give credit for. Another is that Americans are not travelled. Like you mentioned, we could just go visit other American cities, but a city on the West Coast is marginally different and mostly culturally the same in say, Washington, take Seattle for example, than Dallas. Sure, Dallas is very highway centric and not nearly as green as Seattle, but at the end of the day, the Starbucks and McDonalds are up the street and the oversized Walmart Parkinglot without a native plant in sight are up the street whether you are in Rural Appalachia or in suburbian sprawl American generic city #47

I honestly think a larger component is that our social safety nets are disgustingly bad. Sure, our size and culture facilitate a homogenous experience where it makes it difficult to see other perspectives. But I think the expendable income, despite higher wages, I would place many bets, is lower than say the average western European. I see that metric used a lot, American wages being higher on average on a technicality than our Western Euro or East Asian democratic counterparts, but what I would bet is that expendable income plays a huge role due to Americans having to individually front the cost of many of these safety nets.

novel cedar
#

I feel as though it’s a balance, that a mix of both is good

Our expendable income is greater, by the numbers

#

But also, our houses are bigger

Our cars too (and more dangerous)

Our electronics are cheaper

e.g. the expectation to lease or even buy a $20k, $30k+ car fresh out of high school or have a family that could afford that ability. If we want to go to university, we HAVE to have access to a vehicle which in no world is a cheap expense. Most families require multiple functioning cars to be able to function and earn income. I found being in European language classes that my European classmates were WAY more mature when I was in high school, like independent, had trade or vocational training lined up, were already travelling on a weekend basis where my American peers were relying on their parents to do EVERYTHING. I found the same travelling in East Asia. Generalizations set aside, those kids are way more independent overall. The same things I said that were true about the euro students and what I saw being in Asia were true. Self reliant. Able to participate in activites, not rely on parents for everything.

I clarified I cant speak for the east coast because I have never been. Just that, people who have experienced both Tokyo's and NY's, in general would probably still side with Tokyo at the end of the day. I would say, Kansai region is a closer analogy though to NY. Maybe this is different in Europe but it surprised me just how little market penetration the US auto industry has in SEA. You’d think something would be popular out there but it seems like that stopped being a thing even in AUS when Holden kicked the bucket. I’d see signs advertising Stellantis stuff but no one driving them in Taiwan. Teslas were common though.

tacit pebble

SEA is a complex region and a lot of geopolitical factors at stake there. I can see Taiwan, for example, having interest in the American products but Thailand has a lot of factors to not be in favor of western product.

tacit pebble
#

Yes. I do appreciate that about the US. I went on a deepdive about the transition to the highway only system we prefer here. I remember reading metrics like 100,000k+ miles of rail have remained abandoned since the 1900s

novel cedar
#

This is true

#

But also, we have to remember what killed the rail industry

#

Building 100,000 miles worth of rail worth abandoning

#

But the 1920s, so much of the country OVERBUILT on rail

#

That it killed the industry as a whole

tacit pebble
#

I think more factors killed the industry, but yeah. I agree. I recall reading that the car lobby had lobbied the federal regulating bodies and that played into the death of the passenger rail industry. Taken with a huge grain of salt again, because I am not as educated as I would like to be on this particular topic, but I do remember having read that the margins for operation of passenger rail were so high that a lot of companies just stopped doing it due to said regulations

novel cedar

I don’t think it was just the car lobby

Increased regulations on all industries were felt across the country

We were soaring high for decades on the fruits of the Industrial Revolution

tacit pebble
#

novel cedar
#

And then had to figure out how to make everything safe now that it was invented

tacit pebble
#

From Wikipedia "With the proliferation of a system of highways built and owned by the state, operated at a loss and were not restricted by the requirement to make a profit, trucks began to eat away freight traffic and automobiles (and later airplanes, which were also subsided by the state via airports, air traffic control, etc.) devoured the passenger traffic."

#

That is tragic.

novel cedar
#

Agreed

#

But also, I don’t think I’d trust a United Airlines air traffic control

Yes, they are required to make a profit

tacit pebble
# novel cedar But also, I don’t think I’d trust a United Airlines air traffic control

I am not sure I totally understand. I place trust in the FAA, since, yknow, those guys HAVE kept American industry very safe. Albeit, there is misinformation out there, last year was not statistically different with the exception of the Blackhawk incident than the previous 10 years for example. But JFK definitely does throughput like 300 people every 6 minutes. I think I am misunderstanding the United Airlines point

novel cedar
#

With your comment about subsidies from the state for ATC

And airports being run by governments rather than companies

I understand that the issue is for sure a very much more complex issue than what I had portrayed at face value but I still hold at heart that we are behind. I experienced better in countries whos economies we consider to be worse or at least not the size as ours perform better for there people, even in blatant oligarch forward capitalist countries that make even American capitalism look like the good guy (South Korea) and still do better in terms of public amenities

I presume the same--as the far-right would call it--"woke agenda" is the same level of "woke" as "You're such a misogynist!" in YU-NO's US English dub by Funimation in 2019

and also that the meaning of "woke" seems to almost be overshadowed by what could be called "far-right slang" instead of its true meanings it originally had

#

War Thunder (just kidding!)
URL for reference was omitted, so just look up "Funimation Alters YU-NO Dialogue “You’re Such a Misogynist!”" for more context on that)

#

It was part of what some critics would say was Funimation's "politically-inclined leftist agenda" and the distributor "altering dialogue to pander to feminists and those who don’t even watch anime", which dated back to as early as 2015, probably as a reaction to the climate since Gamergate in 2013-2014.

#

To be fair, if the company (now known as Crunchyroll, LLC since 2021) also offered a straight dub that's close to the original source material, alongside what I'm gonna call the "woke dubs" for both YU-NO, Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid and a few other titles said to have been affected by this, the backlash would've been... lessened?

#

I dunno. I know ADV Films did that with their dubs of Oh! Super Milk-Chan over two decades ago, but that was probably because they could, and ADV wasn't in a climate as sensitive and what-it-is as Funimation was a decade later.

#

I'll just say that it's complicated and I'm probably not as, uh... qualified to talk about some of these things as much as anyone else, per se

#

There's probably some political historians and anime localization historians who could explain this a heck of a lot better than I could

#

I mean, Funimation did get some mentions on The WAN Show in the past, when Crunchyroll was ending Funimation NOW, effectively taking away users' access to digital copies on Funimation NOW, and also not doing anything like transferring Funimation NOW licenses to matching YouTube (Google Play), Apple TV (iTunes), or whatever licenses

#

so, it's... kinda-WAN-related

#

and Crunchyroll was even mentioned earlier on The WAN Show in March 2015, and sponsored Linus Tech Tips in 2016 on a Zotac GT 730 video, years before Sony Pictures acquired them (and predating Sony's Funimation buyout in 2017)

#

but yeah, I'll just say this,
If you want to have a purist-friendly dub, whilst also wanting to do a dub that panders to the casual viewers & feminists, go for it as long as you offer both (along with literal translated subtitles for the original Japanese audio, too), and not just the latter only.

Regarding 5:41 of the latest WAN show: Linus, I thought you said that in the case of prices like $549 and $499 you were gonna call them $550 and $500 respectively.

I understand you wouldn't do that on lttstore.com, because you're actually trying to sell stuff there, but when reviewing products or reporting on pricing, it would be nice if you kept up that commitment.

PS: I tried to comment this under the video (even without mentioning lttstore.com, to make sure I don't end up in a URL filter), but the comment got removed immediately.

# random trout IMO, testing in a vacuum isn't real testing - if you're not testing X thing unde...

As a non-engineer who works more in creative fields, your line of thought still makes way more sense than the approach "testing in a vacuum". I don't use my $$$$+ camera equipment in perfect conditions, it can be 110F+ day here in Dallas, or a monsoon season in Kyoto, Japan, and I would still have expectations that my camera would still function as advertised at the end of the day. They say it is weather sealed, it better be damn weather sealed. IF it says it has better XYZ, it better god damn have better XYZ. The perfect testing conditions are the most extreme conditions you expect your consumer product to go through. So to think that the 12VPHWR power connector somehow slipped through the cracks in rather mundane, as expected conditions are somehow melting, or at minimum malfunctioning at said conditions says everything. I don't think there is any benefit of a doubt to give as Ryoken was saying considering that nearly every malfunction reported so far have largely not been user error, and down to literal manufacturer inadequacy.

plain aurora
#

the prices these cards are selling at, they can't be testing in the vacuum, this is a price range where its right to expect top performance, just like with my camera. I would expect the card to run the way it advertises, any less or any power issues, its at fault of the designer and builder of the card, not the end user.

They mentioned it when it was new and how it's basically just there to answer easy questions before passing it off to support, and that it wouldn't be replacing real people as support. I don't recall if they said what they were using though.

The "bug" is someone forgot they set a fixed 10 year certificate with no plans to update it. Unless they intentionally let it expire to kill the product off, which obviously isn't a bug.

plain aurora
#

Yeah I had to deal with a piece of software that had that feature. It was a current one that a lot of churches used for their services. On a Friday night a certificate expired and the software wouldn’t run. That company had to run into work late on Friday night and work throughout the night to get it to work again

#

It’s subscription based and a lot of us had to warn our pastors. I was up early on a Sunday morning to get it patched. (Friday American time/Saturday nz time)

crude sandal
#

Pretty easy to forget that the cert was only valid for 10 years tbh

Knowing what the Chromecasts are meant to be, this isn't surprising at all

#

No doubt google doesn't put much effort into these and doesn't really want to make them at all
They're first party devices to show what google/Android tv can do

#

Just unfortunately they end up being overall the better devices for the price so everyone buys them

#

The Nvidia shield is too expensive and no one else really bothers trying properly

lament galleon
#

They sold them for 9 years with 3 generations. I don't think google should be able to pull the "we didn't mean for it to take off" excuse.

crude sandal

And I'd guarantee more effort was put into the 3rd gen and onwards lol

And yeah, they do happen to be a better option for the price. Whoops, sucks to suck google, you accidentally made a good product for once.

plain aurora
#

Recently it was the 20 year anniversary of the Robots movie

inner idol
#

41 years of Nausicaa

#

Only seven months before The Terminator gets its anniversary

#

Both films released in 1984.
I consider Hayao Miyazaki and James Cameron oddly fitting contemporaries to each other

#

They've had at least four films come out the same year as each other.
1986 had Castle in the Sky and Aliens

#

1989, Kiki's Delivery Service and The Abyss

#

and 1997 with Princess Mononoke and Titanic

#

The latter two both also have IMAX releases in their history,
Mononoke is later this month from a native 4K restoration,
whereas Titanic had AI filters on top of its 4K scan (and presumably 4K DI they filtered) and some other things (and a 3D high-framerate conversion to boot)
(and there was also the 2012 3D conversion too, but anyways...)

#

Miyazaki has been fairly open about AI being a "slap in the face" to what he considers the human touch,
whereas Cameron finds it a neat toy that had been used in the newest prints of his older movies as he busily works on the next Avatar movies

#

Delaying the Avatar sequels a tad bit would probably help in having native 4K HDR prints with AI usage being toned down a tad, so it can look closer to video while still appealing to filmic purist videophiles.

#

Though there is something to be said about those transfers opening the doors to other studios following in his footsteps

#

the 2K-to-4K upscales that Jaws 3, The Sugarland Express, and Wallace & Gromit: A Matter of Loaf and Death had were subject to scrutiny and criticism due to what I would consider haphazard usage of these AI tools, instead of using some tender love & care on those tools and keeping it judicious.

#

If done correctly, AI filters (I.e., upscalers, patchers, etc.) can work out well, but as of right now, it has been abused and beaten like an axe instead of judiciously & sparingly used like a scalpel

#

David Fincher's use of AI in Se7en is an example of it done right.

#

You don't have to be an AI fanboy or a "tech bro" to see the advantages, as well as drawbacks, those tools have.

it was really frustrating cause that entire regulation rant with the badminton center he kinda showed his ass

#

there were some good comments from actual fire people on fp that pointed out why tf the regulation isn't actually dumb

plain aurora
#

regulations are written in blood

frozen agate
# terse plank there were some good comments from actual fire people on fp that pointed out why...

I'm also of the opinion that if the building was fine without the doors, adding the doors shouldn't cause issues later on. Otherwise, the building should never have been fine before the extra doors were installed.

Though, admittedly, a system where the locks are disabled in the event of the fire alarm being triggered should also be sufficient in this case, so quite why the engineer was unwilling to compromise on it I'm not sure, maybe just a lack of knowledge on the existence of such an option

terse plank
spice oak
#

that makes sense

#

but do the doors lead outside?

frozen agate
#

And maybe the fire is in the room they're running towards

#

I know these rules are in place for a reason, but the rules maybe need rethinking if they lead to situations such as this

lament galleon
#

Also, why are you trying to run to a random door that could be nothing? The actual exits should be clearly marked, it honestly seems better that they aren't able to get into a new space where they have to locate another exit and potentially navigate even more people.

frozen agate
#

^^ this, this right here.

Not sure about canada but in the UK all exit routes are mapped and are legally required to have a green, self illuminating (via battery or other means) EXIT sign, such that they can be located in a dark area, and obvious when fire is present

spice oak
#

perhaps Linus should have mentioned that instead

#

explaining common sense in the way he's thinking could help the situation with the person saying the doors need those push handles

terse plank
#

why do people love to pretend that mfers will act logically all day every day

woeful crescent
#

Worth keeping in mind, Linus was just talking.. Its not like this was his pre-prepared presentation on Fire Exists and how they should work in his building.. so I don't see the issue with him not covering everything, and glossing over some stuff..

terse plank
#

it's mostly just that it came off as a whiny "I don't understand it therefore it's dumb" segment. I'm a sailor where regulations are really fucking important even if you don't get why a given one exists so it's just irritating to hear an entire whiny rant thats just that

frozen agate
frozen agate
terse plank
#

Do sometimes old regs persist past their usefulness and just be a headache sure. Do sometimes regs exist cause a competing business is doing some good ole government capture? Absolutely.

But it takes being pretty intimately familiar with a given thing to be able to truly understand when a reg might be actually silly and it's far more common that someone just doesn't know why it's there and is just whining.
