I both aggree and don't with Linus.. Its silly there isn't a central "accounts" tab in settings.. one-stop-shop.. at least for any accounts that interact with Apple apps.. but that said as he said on first launch/not signed in the mail app and such would prompt you to add your mail account from various sources including gmail, outlook, exchange, etc..

So for average user the latter is "intuitive" and for anyone a little more advanced, or looking to add stuff later, its buried deeper than it should be..

But I'll say I'm also going to be biased just from being in the ecosystem.. so a lot is intuitive to me NOW cause I was there as it went through its progression from earlier versions..

As someone who jumped from a Galaxy S23u to an iPhone 16 Pro- iOS has quite a few cons, and some pros.

Cons- Homescreen layout moving apps around after removing a single app, non-intuitive account system (which has been around longer than the last few years, the whole mail app/calendar account thing has been an issue since iOS 6), worse over all voice assistant, non-existent layered keyboard support (yes i know you can hold the numbers button and slide), and finally limited PIP support for media apps not named youtube.

Pros- better video quality, the whole camera tone thing from iOS 18 is a boon for photos, constant voice input button at the bottom right, all call logs in the phone app WITH CALL BACK SUPPORT, more customizable quick menu, better battery management options, and a better car experience.

I do truly think iOS needs to adopt the same panel as macOS and have an “internet accounts” panel that covers all accounts

I would argue that there's things that are more ethical but as far as "ethical" goes, it's such a hard nail to hit. Based on your thoughts on labor, the environmental impact, quality that you're willing to give for sale. The fact is, Consumption has something behind it, there's always some unethical component, no matter what's consumed. Least in our current system.

As far as not saying "No" to LTT being "corporate and evil", I think that's really how it is. To some extent there will be times where LTT can't be considered the "good guy" in some circumstances no matter how you spin it. The latest layoffs for example. You could call them necessary, but regardless of that, Some people just lost a job, and it's a cold calculation that had to be made. Something where much of the human element is removed, leaving the cold and calculating part to remain. Many would consider that "evil"

But if someone makes a complaint, say a woman says her co-worker harrased her and it isn't dealt with properly and she leaves and sues. She's right but no corporate HR that's "good" at what they do will agree unless there's evidence submissable in court at which point they'll have a payout arranged and NDA signed. I was Ops manager for 7 years and we paid out 3 people because it was easier thna the potential court case. Each between £5k-10K. TBH we didn't do anything wrong but my friend and owner was a lawyer and very risk averse. Basically what im saying is companies have to replace personal empathy with procedures. And we started as 3 very liberal empathetic friends who went clubbing together... it gets dark fast.

It might be more of an adhd/autism thing, I can at least say that it's something I have to deal with sometimes. Usually if I can't sleep, putting on something that doesn't require me to look at it and give it active attention helps. I think the key is that you're not "stimulated," but you're also still "preoccupied"

I don't think it's specific to ADHD, I know a number of non-atypical people who start overthinking as soon as they go to bed, since they are suddenly cease to do physical activities, but the brain doesn't necessarily just turn itself off at the same time. I have plenty of time, when I had to put on a movie I have already seen a million times, as otherwise I get stuck on a problem or thought that stresses me out and cannot fall asleep again, even if I'm exhausted. We're just living in a time when we all get overstimulated and it's not always easy to work off our energies, while we're easily replenishing lost energy as well. Plus most of the time our brain isn't stuck on the lowest levels of Maslow's pyramid, so we have plenty of stuff to overanalyze

It's just that atypical people have a lot harder time with the same issue

It makes sense tbh, handling the volume of orders for BF/CM is just too much. A lot of people take advantage of these weeks to go to places in person, so they can get some early Christmas shopping, and without having to fight with others at the store (longer period means more relaxed pace for the workers and the customers as well). Plus October/November is year end, so sales tend to be bit lower right until before Christmas, so this is also a good way to increase profit. It's not really dumb.
At the end of the day, why does it even matter what day is BF officially, it's not a holiday, it's just an excuse for people to spend money and stores to roll out some sales on stock before they restock for Christmas. It's not like there's a difference on which day you get the discount

(also changing the date slightly would allow some shops to do shipping in advance before other places, so there's less pressure on the shipping companies and stuff gets to you sooner or at least faster)

This is from last week, about Intel and AMD, but, I thought I'd mention it here. The example Linus gave of the Pennsylvania Railroad and New York Central merging to make Penn Central is probably the pinnacle of cautionary tales regarding government 'encouraged' mergers.

They lasted 8 years, and 6 of those were in bankruptcy. The PRR and NYC were bitter rivals before merging, and most of their networks existed to directly compete with each other, so 2 years into its life, in 1970, after filing for bankruptcy, it posted a deficit of $326 million. The EU time for WAN should be tied to a discounted EU shipping option for the LTTstore. Give the audience across the pond a show where they can send in merch messages and get a discount on shipping.
In theory you should be able to negotiate a bulk discount with the shipping company to maybe help out.

And also its not just the EU that have to pay quite a bit for shipping, those of us in Australia and NZ are the same, also shipping isnt' as cheap as it used to be, a friend of mine used to send cards on a regular basis but now the same pile that used to cost $30 is now $140.

Hell I'm on the otherside of Canada and shipping is already the biggest reason I don't buy more LTT stuff.. Love the shirts, they are affordable, sadly after shipping unless I only order once a year the value diminishes greatly..

I think for us in the EU shipping isn't the lion share of the issue, but the VAT and customs conversions, that usually add a fair bit on top of anything. VAT will always be applicable, but customs processes can be a pain depending on the country, where you often end up with additional administrative and handling fees from the post office. So, say you buy a shirt for 20$, then maybe 40$ is shipping, then 15-27% of the TOTAL package (in this example 60$) VAT depending on the country within the EU, plus the customs handling fee, if by any chance they can't identify the electric documentation etc (it's typically around 5$ base fee and additional fees depending on anything they had to handle).
Then if you order anything above €150, you have an additional custom fee, which adds another charge to the handling fee as well.

So, most of the time we're not hoping for a warehouse due to shipping costs. Those are applicable within EU countries as well. It's the cumbersome customs and VAT clearance that we wish to avoid by having something dispatched from within the EU.

This same $60 items+shipping package would cost me, here in Brazil, $115.66 after all the fees and taxes and possible discounts.

$55.66 of fees on a $60 purchase.

Yeah, my example was 20$ of items+shipping, but it could get near to 100$ in the end. When we ordered stuff, we got stuff together a bit above 100$, so that breaching the €150 value cap wouldn't add extra customs' charges. This way we didn't end up paying double, but still it was a good 30-35% extra on top.

But yeah, my point is that shipping on its own isn't the issue really, it's everything else

best move is to write and make noise to the political parties in your countries and try to get some of the laws that require those additional charges changed for personal imports

Not exactly true. Customs are based on initial costs of a product. The customer ordering from abroad would have to pay customs on the gross price, and administrative costs are individually charged, whereas businesses have a simplified taxation, that's lower, and they are also paying customs based on the manufacturing cost of a product. They would then include the custom fees, some storage overhead and some margin or profit, which is honestly a lot less at the end of the day.
VAT is a charge that is added afterwards based on the country it is purchased in, but again, VAT is only charged for the product within Europe, but not for the international shipping (as s opposed to shipping from outside of the EU).
So you see, it is still a cheaper and faster alternative (not to speak of returns), than intercontinental shipping, plus shipping times would be heavily reduced.

you miss the costs associated with setting up and creating the business entity within a differant country/continant and maintaining the workforce there... Linus has already talked many times on WAN about how until they scale up even more it just does not make sense yet. that's why they took the halfway step of trying Amazon and also I think have talked to Noctua about them stocking some things.

I'm not missing the point, I do understand why they cannot do it, and it's fine. I'm simply explaining why Europeans generally wish there was a way to have a local warehouse, which is actually a common practice for foreign companies to do eventually. You're making this a personal comment on how we don't understand Linus - and we do. Doesn't mean we wouldn't be happy to have this implemented. Nobody was arguing here about how feasible it is for Linus currently to set up and operate a warehouse, we simply discussed about the factors on our end why we would be glad to have this option and why it comes up regularly as a discussion topic. And as time passes, circumstances might change and European orders might reach the significance where a warehouse could be operated and it would offset their extra costs on individual dispatch and returns and other related functions, where it is simply cheaper for them to ship in mass. This isn't an unrealistic projection for the future, it is just not a presently available business decision due to the current cost-return circumstances.

Changing laws on personal imports on the other hand isn't a feasible suggestion now or in the future. There's a very good reason for these laws that protect EU companies against foreign markets, that used to get away selling cheap products without import and tax fees, and it overwhelmed local post offices (especially companies like Temu or AliExpress etc). Since these laws have been created and made more strict, no products can be brought into the country without appropriate taxes being paid on them. Of course, it is now a personal burden, but that's just the way it is. So this suggestion is missing the whole point. Simplification on trade between a customer and a company should not create an inequal competition between companies, especially considering how EU is now trying to push for sustainability

So there. We're expressing wishes and just talked about why we wish for it. Nobody is throwing a tantrum here, so please do not feel like you need to be defending anyone for not granting our wishes. We understand economy. It doesn't mean we wouldn't be happier with having a simpler process. That's all.

Once again, as Linus has said multiple times the costs have never made sense for them. A lot of their products have production steps or qa within Canada so yea would not be just 'ship from China to the EU and then have a warehouse with staff on location, extra finance staff to handle additional tax and fees, probably also extra specialised legal people on retainer and then have to work to balance stock between locations.

And yea that's me saying it as someone in Australia who also has to pay a vat like fee (called gst here, 10% sales tax) and that's generally counted on product and shipping, so a 20 buck shirt has like 15 bucks shipping the add 10% and then I generally wait a full month or 2 for delivery

The thesis is that Mexico for the most part does not enforce illegal immigrants from entering the US. Combine this with another thesis where Mexico and Canada stand to lose more from tariffs with the USA than the USA with them. 4:30pm PT is the scheduled time, usually ends up being roughly 2-3 hours later so a good estimate is 7PT

bird medicine has meant Luke is leaving earlier, so they've been quite good at being nearly on time, which means it's actually been closer to 5:30PT - 6:00PT for the show starting
