I was banned instantly from the ltt reddit when I responed to someone saying sometihng insane about linus. My response was mocking the commenter by agreeing that linus does obviously ridiculous things, like eating babies for power. There is just no way anyone could take what I wrote seriously, but I was banned anyway. The idea was to show the OP what kind of company he is keeping and maybe teach him how crazy he sounded, as simple logical refutes just dont work. Having said this I totally agree with this stance of banning bad faith comments, but who will be doing the banning and how good are they at detecting mockery?

I'm merely pointing out that many governments seem to cherrypick cases. I agree with holding entities like Google, Microsoft, Apple, and Amazon accountable to the consumer, which includes ensuring they don't become defacto monopolies. Just saying that we should stop cherrypicking companies that do this and instead apply the same regulations to all entities, which includes Tax software, to name one example.

Aaaanywho, back on the topic of tech (cause politics make me sick 🤮), it will indeed be interesting to see both LMG and Louis Rossmann's takes on the Google situation. Oof. PirateSoftware glosses over the fact that Ubisoft failed to disclose when they planned to shut down the servers for anyone who purchased it prior to their announcement in Fall / Winter 2023.
Someone might've paid $60 - $80 with the expectation that they'd be able to enjoy the role-playing content (this content doesn't technically require online access to function - it was deliberately coded that way) for an undetermined amount of time... only to find out their license was stolen from them. Had they known when the shutdown was planned, they may not have purchased a license.

But yeah... I do agree Ross hasn't taken enough time to properly define the nuances of what Stop Killing Games is trying to achieve. I think the initiative is good, but the execution needs polishing from a technically minded lawyer who actually understand how digital licensing works now vs. how it should work.

Just a point of interest here - these initiatives are a raw form of what they eventually might or might not become, depending on whether they will 1) achieve the collection of the required amounts of signatures 2) receive a positive reception by the EU parliament 3) actually be considered to become a candidate for a new law.
At which point there are lawyers who will be working on the finer points, and it still might be rejected, if they cannot find a legally well-definable aspect on how to handle this.
As an example, many many years ago this forum started an initiative to stop changing clocks back and forth for summer time and winter time. It then became an EU directive, which eventually was delayed indefinitely, as individual countries could not agree on whether to keep summer or winter time, even within the same zone (within the same assigned neighbourhood). It is now considered a directive that's essentially unsuccessful, despite it going through every step.

This is basically just a forum to express a private concern as a citizen that affects enough people for parliament to deal with, by no means legally binding. But it is a good tool to raise awareness if you are not someone with political or purchasing power. Kinda what democracy should really be about, without the need of everyone needing to pay for a lawyer if something needs to be done (which is where the whole class-action system seems like a joke at times for us Europeans).

ok hold on a sec i take issue with what Linus was saying about how he thinks painted nails look so unattractive to him and the reason why. his reasoning was that it seemed like someone was willing and successfully able to avoid working with there hands and or ever get into a situation where they might brake a nail. and while that might be true for your dollar store press on nails... the tech has come along way since when Linus probably made this assumption. if you pay to get your nails done by a professional they can be pretty indestructible. like the shellac is soo tough and stays that way for a very long time. as with anything you get what you paid for... and there not cheap by any means. but i've totally wrenched on cars with nails that i had gotten done like days before.

Firstly, he said he has no issue with anyone painting their nails. His words were "Personally, I find super done-up nails unattractive". This is likely neither a paint job, nor a discreet French manicure, not even a gel filling. In my reading this is about several cms long nails, that are actually hindering work done by hand.
Several industries where you're working with your hands actually have very specific H&S regulations on nail size, whether natural or artificial, since it is a sharp piece of extension on your fingers and can cut or deform materials you're working with, can get caught in machinery, make protective handgear not possible to wear (latex gloves won't stand a chance). Artificial nails and dyes might also react with chemicals, when you work in specific environments, such as a sterile lab, hospital, a car shop etc. Even corporate offices will oftentimes lay it down in their dress code a vague description on how they expect you do your nails, if you choose to, with regards of them not being too long, as long nails also make it hard to type on a keyboard; blue collar workers would always be advised against it heavily.

His take was on nails that are getting in the way of one's work, which I've seen happen a lot. I had my nails done once for my prom (my dance partner's request), and even though it was as short as it could be using gel (I think maybe around 2mm), I could not do contact sports, couldn't attend my tuba classes and in general had to be super mindful with everyday activities to maintain their condition for about 2 weeks. They were good quality, but were not suitable for a lot of activities, and I got rid off them after the dance. I have, on the other hand, painted my nails several times in my life, and they have never restricted me in doing anything hobby- or work related.

I feel like his point was 1) his preference in what he personally finds attractive and 2) how overly done nails are typically a sign of someone who has the time and opportunity to constantly maintain a niche look (since historically long nails were either a sign of nobility who didn't have to work with their hands or were a sign of hermits who abandoned their vanity to let their hair and nails grow endlessly - often these people would be taken care of like holy people). It is a very old cultural symbol, so it is understandable that it gives off the feeling that the person cannot or will not commit to work that interferes with that kind of nail job.

Look, I agree that the visual appeal is super personal, and it is really not the issue. If you are careful and pay attention, you're fine. But you literally can't put work gloves on anything above around 0,5cm without the risk of either ripping the gloves or causing injury.
If someone wants to work in their own shop at home, or on their own car, they can do whatever they want, it's a personal choice. If an employee shows up with those nails in a shop to work with tools, I actually strongly believe that the owner will send them home. I think I've mentioned specifically as someone handling food. Waiters technically don't touch the food itself (I think they would have fired me if I did, unless for some reason you need to help with cleaning up). So cooks and kitchen aids, butchers and fishmongers (if they're selling their own ware in their shop), bakers, but also people that handle food in a factory setting (food and pharma are the two most sterile and therefore strict industries when it comes for large scale automatised production, but several steps need to be handled by humans, and you need to make sure there's zero contamination).

This only happens when I start a new episode of WAN show and only on mobile. Desktop seems to not have a problem at all, nor do any of the other handful of podcasts I checked.
It also does not happen if I'm in the middle of an episode. Only when I start one and only when it's a WAN show episode.
I've had premium for years and only started using Spotify when Google Podcats met an early grave. This is the first time seeing this, though.

I've never had ads during a WAN Show podcast on Spotify, but then again, I haven't listened on Spotify in a couple years. What @elfin cloud said above rings true though - some podcasts don't always have ads enabled, and those that do seem to randomly not play depending on adblocking at the DNS level or how spotty my cellular connection is when I'm listening on a walk.

Regardless, Premium only guarantees ad-free music playback. Podcasts are another thing entirely.

To my knowledge, everything that comes from outside of the EU regardless of value, weight or quantity is taxed. We actually paid the VAT at checkout, so we will not have any additional costs before delivery. Typically all EU countries should have the same - if you're in an EEA (like UK or Norway) country or non-EU country in Europe, however, it is a local process and could be different.

Honestly for me it hurts their sales combining the high shipping and new, almost weekly, fomo drops.. yes, just downlaod the audio. But the audio codec that youtube uses is not mp3. So you need to then convert it to mp3 using ffmpeg. I set it to 320 Kbps to ensure maximum quality.

Dude, don't do that. Seriously.

You can't upscale the quality by increasing the bitrate when there wasn't enough information in there to begin with. By converting from one lossy format to another lossy format at best you get to keep all the information that was there in the first place and add stuff that was never there (aka noise). Worst case scenario you're actually losing information (and adding noise). So by doing this you're always making the audio actually worse as you're always adding noise. Even if you were converting it to FLAC or another lossless format instead of MP3 you'd still not be getting a better experience than just listening to the file yt-dlp ripped off youtube.

To save everyone from a massive wall of text, I've sent you a PM with a some more information regarding this and a little suggestion on how to get higher quality files.

I haven't watched the latest video yet, but looking at the title it's possible they mention FreeTube. If they do (and of they don't), I'd strongly suggest y'all give it a try if you only/mostly watch YouTube on PC and don't care about syncing. I've been using it for the past 18-24 months, I believe, and it's just a plain better experience on the playlist and subscription management side imho (it also feels lighter/faster, though I haven't cared to properly test it)

Hi, does anyone know how curated merch messages work? I sent a merch message and on the stream at the bottom it said that it was curated and they would talk about it later in the show, but after listening to the whole broadcast and looking at all the timestamps multiple times i cant find it. Do they just ignore some of the merch messages they curate?

So generally, if they get curated, they don't show up at the bottom, at least that I have noticed, it may simply be that they forgot to answer the question, or it did not match in with the topics at any point during "After Dark", so they could not bring it into the conversation.

There are lots of factors which go into which ones get answered and which ones don't, but it could just be as simple as it was overlooked, or that they ran out of time to answer it, or even that they answered one similar already and cut your question so they weren't repeating themselves. This is exactly part of the reason why Merch Messages require a store purchase, so that way at least you've got something out of throwing your money at a screen, instead of getting nothing if they miss your message

As a dev myself, team lead/tech lead I can tell you more devs often leads to longer dev times. Maybe nobody is working on.. idk ffmpeg threads or whatever their encoding pipeline is so perhaps another dev could just pickup work on it, but adding devs to things actively worked on by other devs often just creates problems.
