I thoroughly enjoyed the book, so much so that the first time I finished it I immediately restarted it, but the movie was borderline unwatchable for me. I don't even remember why tbh, but that never stopped me from hating on something.

I did finish RP2 tho, but only because I can't not finish a book once I start it, the only exception so far in my life being the 3rd GoT book, whatever it's called. Those books are 🐶💩 and I only managed to force myself to read books 1 and 2 because I really enjoyed the TV Show

I personally appreciated the movie, but only as an alternate storyline in the same world. If you went into it expecting it to be a recreation EXACTLY of the book, I can easily see how you were disappointed. Problem was, you needed the worldbuilding of the book prior to the movie, but if you read the plot of the book before seeing the movie you would just see that the plot in the book is so much better

Linus is talking about the files not being deleted on iOS in the currently streaming WAN show, on older iOS devices like the iPad 2 and The New iPad (iPad 3) when you did a factory reset the files would still persist but the OS wouldn't see them as the mbr or whatever was gone.
You'd only see the old images for a split second in the gallery while scrolling through as it first would load a low res cached version of the image before loading the real image - but the low res cached image would very often be an older image from a previous user.

I had to do tech support for some of my coworkers because they purchased a couple older iPads to give to their grandparents but apparently inappropriate images would show in the gallery as they swiped through their images (grandparents used the tablets to take pictures of their art projects). The issue was solved be writing thousands and thousands of 1MB green .PNG files to the iPads to overwrite all of the space on their storage.

I have NO idea how modern Apple is done these days, I've never used their devices asides from when I was forced to for work.

So, first time for me to post here (pretty new to this community, too). Firstly, a general shotout for the WAN show - I simply love the super chill, non-toxic atmosphere, even though it's mostly in the wee hours for me (EU). I was shown LTT several years back and somehow never really caught on, but then my partner introduced me to WAN, and as a tech-curious but still pretty low-key techie woman, I find WAN to be really interesting and entertaining, especially on topics beyond tech.

Also, the entire dating in 30's - can confirm, it is a horrifying experience, especially for a person who very strongly avoided online dating. However, I also found, that in gaming, if you're into games that have healthy DC communities can help making friends as well as encourage a long-term environment to get to know one another - including even finding a partner, considering that's not the reason for you to join a community in the first place. This has happened to a few of my friends and even myself, and people get long-term validation on other community members, especially if the community encourages live meetups or similar activities.

Otherwise I agree with what Linus, Yvonne and Luke mentioned on the show on live hobby groups and sports communities

Didn’t really help that all this consolidation made it harder too.

Can confirm. I left a job like that. As someone who wants to see humanity reach a time period where we (everyone, collectively) only need to work 32 (or 24, or 16, etc.) hour weeks... I can't stand doing the same thing over and over again expecting different results. "We have ABC software to make performing XYZ take 50% less time, or heck, automate 95% of the work, and yet leadership refuses to learn. I'm outy. Buh-bye!"

Currently also a gathering where we’re celebrating a Gen z’er graduating with a degree with multimedia production so it’s interesting how we’re making this comparisons. Compared to millennials who “used computers at a hobby” and wanting dating apps to find someone with compatible hobbies, Gen Z seems to be comparing “online profiles” and comparing those “cutouts” vs the person, despite wanting the same sort of compatibility.

For the place I worked, yup. Supervisor indirectly said something along the lines of "returning to office will help the downtown businesses because people will pay for parking and buy lunches." Little did they know I made lunch at home everyday prior to the pandemic, and paying for parking wasn't a condition of the job when I was hired so good luck trying to pull that card, boss dude. 🤣

Reality is, many people still supported good independent (and local chain) cafes / restaurants / takeout places through the pandemic anyway, regardless of working in the office. Once the first 6-12 months went by, I started going to the same locally owned cafe for mochas + sandiwches. Returning to the office wouldn't have changed how much I spent in the city anyway, but maybe others would have spent more.

(Granted, some of these companies have always been remote, but with all forms of in-office requirements lifted, people definitely made some life changing moves if they could do full 100% remote work.)

As a person who is currently moving countries and trying to relocate in tech, I feel this as well. I was hired at my current company as a remote worker, and somehow managed to force a fully remote contract clause, so I was never forced to work from the office (the only time I had to show up was to sign HR papers, to have lunch with coworkers or to visit the local IT ). Now companies are shutting my application and pre-processing for not being from the exact location (city and district), regardless the fact that European cities are pretty small, considering distances in the US and we do have excellent public transport (especially trains).

So this seems like a huge struggle for companies trying to balance their remote and local resources

Even as a remote worker, I've only been able to force them for the remote clause because of my light sensitivity, and not because my entire team was otherwise located in the US and Canada and there was exactly 0 gain from sitting in the local office physically

Here's an interesting one:
When I heard about the new Windows "Recall" activity-tracking feature, it reminded me of a similar app from 7 years ago. Took a while to find as it’s long since been shuttered, but it was a Mac-only app called “Atlas Recall” that recorded and indexed activity in much the same way. The company behind it, Atlas Informatics, ended up shutting the service down less than a year after its launch, citing financial issues. Interestingly, their funding appears to have been led by Microsoft, which makes me wonder… did they acquire the IP or the team, or just rip it off? If it was the latter, keeping the name is quite brazen.

I never experienced this before I went to an ICA in Stockholm two years ago but a number of major UK supermarkets have introduced barriers at the checkouts that only open when you scan your till receipt, which is inconvenient when there’s no no-purchase exits

A side benefit is that supermarkets with self-service offer free wifi as part of the package so you don’t chug mobile data loading product images etc

I think these Roblox/Ikea jobs would be better off being marketed towards people who otherwise couldn't do the job.. Disability, or other reasons they can't be out public working environment.. as silly as the whole thing is.

I signed up for Second Life about a year ago. Back then, my life was so great I literally wanted a second one. In my Second Life, I was also a LTT discord user and I was also named embarrassedshimmeringbelugawhale. Absolutely everything was the same, except I could fly.

Second life type virtual worlds were never meant for "gameplay" if you're looking to be a gamer in a virtual world that isnt whaqt a virtual word is for. There is no starting point, middle point , hit points (or life etc) or ending..

I use abobe products before they went to the monthly suybscription model...yea they are old...but they still work for my needs

it's also an industry standard software suite, and therefore essential for many people who need to do work with others, mainly in the design world

its not just adobe products. i bought like, a lifetime version of MS Office like the 2022 version and it does nothing but crash when I try to do anything in Word. I got fed up and switched to libre office

Windows Ubuntu 11 Plasma uses KDE plasma and does rather well...its not windows so there is a learning curve if you're not use to linux...
