I am slowly picking up powershell through necessity at work; but I am in no means a wizard. I tip my hat to folks who got into the whole automation (ansible, puppet, chef, or terrform, etc) stuff early and went heavy on cloud - I just didn't have the energy or drive to learn a ton of stuff real fast.

I'm a blue collar IT generalist with a few specialites as I get older. I have the advantage of having being forced into the deepend (no active managers over the years) on everything from support, ticketing, networking, printers, storage, virtualization, cloud (AWS/Azure), telephony, pick a thing 🙂

Since they said it's a bolt action pen (at least I think they did, if not then I inferred it from the J), I assume they're trying to make a J-slot like the one in the picture.

It's pretty simple to machine it so long as you have a 4th axis on the milling machine (a vertical rotary chuck, pretty standard addition). The channel "Inheritance Machining" made a bolt action pen some time ago, if you're interested. Also, if you like machining, this channel is friggin' great. I hate ASRM but I've slept to this guy's voice+machining sounds more than once and had to watch the video all over again because it's actually interesting af.

Anyway, re: designing it, it should be pretty simple: Just use the wrap feature to place the J onto the curved surface and then "extrude in" (extrude but negative values so that it removes material) or use "curve pattern" (or smth with a similar name, idr). It's been a while since I last used SolidWorks (I mostly use Siemens NX and Rhino since I'm in studying marine engineering/naval architecture with hopes of one day building one of those massive 300+ metres floating beauties) and if they've had designers that use SW on the daily fail, then maybe I'm completely wrong.

It's not super inovative, but everything it does, it does insanely well.

I can attest. I learned Autodesk inventor in highschool and absolutely love it. After I graduated and wanted to use it again, I tried fusion360. It's similar, but pretty much entirely cloud based and I could not get the hang of it. The high seas definitely saved me there.

It's unoriginal mindless consumer gimmick. Maybe it was better with video, but as a listener it wasn't interesting, and didn't seem to be relevant to the core. Other gimmicks or games have been tried recently, like a spinning wheel, and it seemed like another short lived gimmick.

How was it a fun and creative bit of content? How will it continue to be interesting week after week? Why are they bothering with this?

The core of the WAN show seems to be a weekly tech news discussion show. The appeal that it is like just hanging out with Linus, Luke and Dan. Do you think LLD need a gimmick game to talk about the news? Because they seemed to have done fine for years without it.

it also doesnt seem like it would be enough for a video. If it was a video, lots of people would probably complain about it being "lazy" content. I think CSF would have been the best "video" place for it, but CSF is basically dead again, so WAN is the best place for it IMO.

Wan has gotten long lately so something fun like that to break it up was very welcome (at least IMO)

Yeah, ours was just really, really old house not meant for modern heating in any way at all, and that was back when I was there in like, '07. You'd always wake up freezing cold with no warmth, and you would always be too warm in the living room, so we'd spend our days in the kitchen enjoying just the right warmth from the heater, and sitting at the table doing activities

Come to think of it, I don't know how my grandparents lived in that house, it was a nightmare and I was only like 5 at the time

I still remember a bunch of random details about it though, despite being 21 now

what this kind of heating achieves is it heats the bricks up, and it'll stay warm for like 2 days after you wood-heat it up

stores the heat in the bricks and that keeps the whole area warm

its kinda similar to sauna, but instead of 90c heat for a few hours, you get a more constant heat source for a day or two

i can go 2-3 days without heating the upstairs, while i have to heat up downstairs every night which is fairly annoying
