I'd love for them to cover what's been going on with the whole RHEL saga but that area of linux isn't their thing outside of Emily and tivy so I doubt they will as much as Id be curious to see Luke's take on it all

The youtube price hike or did I miss something? I don't really follow youtube other than using it to watch what I watch. I also doubt they'll touch RHEL, I'd be surprised if Luke has a take. From what little I've heard from a few people that do backend development, they never use Linux and rarely use Mac OS. Almost everything can be done in windows. But that might just be those peoples experiences.

it's very heavily dependant on work flow and project there's many back ends out there that can't do windows. Youtube premium raised prices again. even several of the grandfathered plans have been hit.

I mainly watch experiment for the news, the opinions are ok. That's how I learned that Ubuntu 23 main lined Arc drivers.

Honestly I'm not interested in distro hopping. I tried KDE and it was fine, but settled on Ubuntu since it seems to get more love than others, and I can find answers to any issue with a simple search.

i mean desktop environments and distros aren't synonomus my first real install was ubuntu gnome and here I am a kde arch user. it's as much about preference within work flow as it is a distro

I'll never have much to say that's engative about ubuntu server but I just can't do the desktop installer any more

experiment did a quick video not long ago that put snaps in a perspective that hit home with me, snaps more closely follow the windows model of all in one packages with different libraries all bundled together, similarly to how docker does it, I have had alot of issues with library mismatches and snaps/docker handles all of that gracefully, I just wish snaps could be given elevated privileges more easily

ubuntu server and desktop work equally well for my needs, I actually just started using desktop even for my server use case since the only difference was the desktop gui, they've made the backend exactly the same

I've had so many issues with them in my case it's been infuriating. granted they've also sometimes been some of my least painful installs but it's all about context and how you use them. I'm gonna use native packages till the choice is taken from me but I'm more then likely gonna go to flatpacks before snaps

to me flatpacks are basically the same as snaps, back to that 'how you use it' argument, whichever works best for you right

the only snap I use right now is OpenRGB, something weird is going on with the addons with linux and I have to run the snap using sudo so that it works correctly, everything else is dockers

My current only snaps are all for things like jelly fin and I was using a snap for vscode during the few times I need it and can't get vim to do the trick cause the snap was the only one where I could get the extension store for vscode to work

I feel like that's the reason we'll be seeing snaps/flatpacks/etc taking more prominence in the coming years. Linux doesn't seem to handle library mismatches well, snaps take care of all of that.

I agree they're not going any where but for doing a sever deploy versus standard deploy it's for sure better but there's some apps where you just will always take hits in storage or performance if it's not native packaging.
