During the wan show Linus mentioned having a system that could search through previous WAN shows to answer merch messages using chatgpt. They went on talk about the cost and it being an unofficial api. I built a small proof of concept for that using the text-embedding-ada-002 model. It's been publicly available for around a month now and is priced at $0.0004 / 1K tokens. I generated embeddings from just two past WAN shows and it averaged at 350 tokens per show. Those embedding costs are one time as you then store those text embeddings. Search is performed by generating an embedding of your query and comparing it to your database via cosine similarity. I'll try to put up a public demo by the end of this weekend as it's a tad bit slow to generate the embeddings.

I'm still watching yesterday's WAN show so hopefully this didn't come up (actually it's old news so it probably didn't) but I came across a... somewhat disturbing observation today.

Someone informed me that Stable Diffusion open sourced their ML model.

And would you look at that, it's MIT licensed. Wait a minute... there's a second license in here.

That license is exclusive to the ML model (stated at the end of the readme), and that's not a license recognized by the OSI. As a matter of fact, some of the clauses in here feel like they're in disagreement with the OSI.
To top it off, the training scripts and datasets have not been provided. This is basically the ML equivalent to a pre-compiled binary.

Maybe I misunderstand but... it feels very misleading to say that the ML model is "open source".
Is this in bad faith or am I just confused?

the model is still "open source", but open source as such does not apply to an ML model - without reusing or even reading the source in that repository whatsoever, you could still recreate the model in a few different ways. Another difference is that open source licenses are intended to describe permissions/liabilities for use of the code, and don't have the language to describe the same for use of an ML model. Given the propensity for abuse of this technology, new licenses are a legal necessity if only to protect the authors.

also it seems like you may be conflating the model with trained checkpoints / model weights, which are not present in this repository as they are provided in a binary format

as for training scripts and datasets - they are available, they're not relevant to the code for the model however. This is a library, not necessarily designed to be used as a standalone program

The dataset is a subset of https://laion.ai/blog/laion-5b/, and if you want to train the model yourself, the diffusers repository (https://github.com/huggingface/diffusers) provides some examples for training from a checkpoint

now, if you want to train the entire thing from scratch, that's still possible but you may find yourself limited if you aren't funded or don't have a friendly relationship with andy jassy

I understand few people have access to the hardware to run the training, and yeah... there's really nothing we can do about that at this time.

Change the query parameter to change the search term

I'll add context around the relevant chunks with +-2 embeddings so there is more information

ideally I'd generate the transcriptions with openai whispers large model but gpu can't handle that so it's currently scraped from youtube which I'll slowly be replacing with whisper ones

Also, if you actually watched the WAN show, you'd know that Linus didn't say anything negative towards him at all, nor did he misrepresent DarkViper's views. 2. Character attack (which might be correct, but is ultimately irrelevant)

Now given, it's less of a problem here because this is a discord with a few people casually chatting about a topic, but I think that form of discussion is super harmful when applied on a large scale and by people with a large following (or by people trying to push it to a large audience), plus it puts the emphasis on the other person being wrong rather than an honest and good faith search for the truth of the situation. Darkviperau might be doing all this for the clout and for free relevance, that's totally possible, but it's also totally possible that he truly believes what he's saying and fights for it for that reason. Regardless of his reasoning, the points for and against what he's saying remain the same, and so any more formal/public discussion of the validity of his points should include character attacks to an absolute minimum, because nobody is receptive to criticism right after they've been insulted.

I can't recall anything bad Luke and Linus said about the video, however after listening can certainly agree that it was summarized poorly, and because it was summarized poorly, talked about poorly, and that's where a lot of the issue comes from. I know Linus is busy so I can certainly understand why he didn't watch the video, regardless it it being only 20 minutes. From what I recall at least he's said he doesn't very much consume YouTube videos.

That said, People's criticism of darkvipers latest response appear to boil down to the tone he typically speaks in, rather than what he actually said.

It can feel like he overly focuses on one point that reaction content and any content is biding for your attention/taking it away from something else that could use it. And it feels like he focuses on it so much that it's saying that anything taking attention away from anything else feels bad, even if that isn't his intention. Couple things that Linus needs to change is 1) how he gets his view point on a video. By actually watching the video the comments are about. Otherwise he may get an incorrect view point by comments from people who also don't watch the video, and just comment, which, if you're gonna do that, shut your cake hole please.

And 2) following his own advice with cheaters. There's been a few times where he's cheated in channel super fun. To me, a game is no longer fun if you're gonna cheat. I think a new rule needs to be established for any games on channel super fun. If you cheat, you're automatically disqualified.
