I just came back from Holiday and had some spare time today to catch up on the WAN Show.

This week they talked a lot about the Lab website, potential features etc. which I found fascinating.
And this question at 2:18:36

Companies that sell kits with pre-selected parts?

Caught my attention, as I tried to work on a similar website a couple of years ago when I was more into web development, but gave up on the idea because of the sheer size of the project.

But maybe my idea(s) could inspire a feature for the Lab website. This may be a bit of a mess, I'm sorry, but I will try to bring my point across.

• When testing products, especially popular ones, maybe include clips of the installation and assembly. Which could be used in a LTT or Short Circuit review / unboxing.
Tell the viewer / reader how easy the installation is, if there needs to be anything they would need to look out for, if the steps maybe a bit counter intuitive, etc.

Said clips of someone installing / testing the device could then also be embedded on the products page and just as how they mentioned earlier in the WAN show, how they planed to make it possible for people to "join together" two reviews of a gpu for example to see them perform side by side, they could also "join together" a build guide for a experienced PC builder, or it could even be useful for a veteran, as it would make it easier to see if a case for example has some tight spots and routing specific cables, or mounting the AIO quite early might be advantageous, or that it's the complete opposite and it should not be mounted until the last second, or even after a test boot, because the specific layout of the case will make it hard to get to parts, for example.

So I could see a feature like this be very useful and helpful to not only first time builder, but also veterans who have built a couple of PCs, but don't want to spend 4 hours building and dissembling a system, simple because they weren't aware of some weird quirk of a component.

• A additional feature could be to allow comments to specific clips, sorry I am not on Floatplane, not sure if they have that. Which would also be shown under the product page on the Lab website, while also not mixing in with the comments on the video on Floatplane, as these comments would or could be under a separate "part" of the video, like call it "clip comments", "chapter comments" or "section comments".
I assume it would be possible to also include those on the Lab website, if the clips would also be included through Floatplane.

I know Linus said, they will potentially not allow comments, so I would leave this open. It could just allow comments or additional info from other people, in case there are things not mentioned.

• Assuming they already planned this, seeing if parts are compatible. They mentioned previously they wouldn't take the manufacturers words for it, but this could make the process easier, by importing the provided information, regarding size, weight, connectors, ports, compatibility, etc. - maybe add some warning above "Information provided by manufacturer and not yet verified through independent testing"
With their connections they could most likely access a lot of these raw data through the companies.

• Sorting it may be a bit of a challenge, I would volunteer for that. At least as much as I can. So it can be automatically imported into the site.

This would also make it possible for people to see if two products are compatible even if the lab hasn't tested those yet. And would allow if the comment feature exist, for people to "link" products together and comment regarding their compatibility.

As in

This 280mm AIO while technically compatible with this case and mainboard, is really tough to fit in, as it collides with the 8 pin connector for the CPU and makes accessing the RAM impossible. This case doesn't leave enough room at the top for this radiator. You guys should make sure your AIO is either a bit flatter or your Mainboard positions the RAM and other parts a bit lower so you can easier access those in the future for upgrades or troubleshooting.
For troubleshooting reasons you should not install the AIO until you know the PC works if you still go for this combo.

This could even help people who for example have some old parts and some new parts, that way they could see if someone else may have run into issues within an upgrade.

• To make this all easier, it may be important to link Products out of a stack together as "Variants". So that even if people don't have the exact same products, but if they are similar, they could still see if there are things they would need to look out for.

So, I wasn't sure where to post this, but I always hear Linus and Luke talk on the WAN Show about windows search being bad, I know Linus has complained about to always doing the web results. Well I was looking at ways to fix the right click menu (windows 11) and came across this! If you disable search suggestions via group policy it improves the start menu search back to like windows 7 level, it won't do a web search anymore from the start menu. It's under * User Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > File Explorer* and the name of the policy is "Turn off display of recent search entries in the File Explorer search box"

Isn’t the point of a job title to simply your responsibilities into a short & sweet title? I’d understand if they were comparing a Junior so and so to a Senior so and so, but those are different job titles. (I’m at the part where they’re talking about the Netflix salary range. I've never worked anywhere where same job title meant exactly the same responsibilities, as much as that would probably be nice. Usually it's roughly same idea, but someone might be assigned some extra thing, and a different someone might get assigned a different extra thing, even if they aren't part of the original job. In an ideal world sure, same job title would mean same responsibilities and probably even same pay (possibly with some allowance for how long they've held the title), but that's not the job world I've ever lived in.

Third party apps are good for consumers but if you are running a platform it does add some legwork because you now no longer know the traffic flow patterns, size of traffic, shape, etc

so the factory is already configured to do X as one continuous operation, how much time and investment does it take to divert this at various points within the assembly line, how much extra storage space is needed to store this excess, how much opportunity cost do you incur, how do you calculate the correct amount of each item to produce separately

A big distributor of parts would place an order for 10,000 parts to Samsung, Samsung would pass this order on to their sub-assembly manufacturer. The sub-assembly manufacturer has like 12 months to fulfill the order because the phone is in warranty for at least 1 year. So no one needs the part until this ends anyway.
The big parts distributors take on the burden of deciding how many parts to order within the window when the parts are available.
Shouldn't be much storage cost needed since as soon as the sub-assembly manufacturer gets the parts they can ship them out. But yeah, any costs will obviously be added onto the parts.
