Messiness around allegations of that nature are very tragic. Victims of that sort of thing should be able to speak up without being put on blast and called liars since it is a thing that powerful people have been known to do, but at the same time there appears to be very little recourse in the event of false allegations unless theres clear evidence to the contrary (i.e. 'receipts'). I honestly don't know what kind of system level solution could exist, and we're kinda stuck wishing that people aren't awful (don't coerce people into stuff, and don't make false allegations).

I 100% disagree. Most of the time take-home exams are just a way of companies giving people work to do so they can spend not even 5 minutes looking at/judging 4 hours of work so they don't have to invest the effort themselves.

I’ve never experienced a take-home exam but I imagine it’s less stressful for the applicant. I once designed a practical data munging question with sample data for interview candidates to complete in the half hour before their interview and it did not go well

That's a problem that says more about your interview process and training your interviewers if it can't manage that.

The best interview/process I went through when was applying to jobs earlier this year was for Canva. For their coding portion their approach is to have a small sample snippet, and you extend it piece by piece. That lets you talk through what you'd do, why you'd do things certain ways, and using the same interview you can level someone all the way from graduate to tech lead or even staff/principal engineer level, so it lets you talk about what you know about thread safety, data immutability and safety, scalability etc at different levels.

Invariably what I've seen from take-homes is "I didn't like the way they implemented X/I wouldn't have done it that way" and they've made up their mind on the candidate before they can explain why they did it the particular way they did - often times the interviewers being less experienced than the candidate and so the candidates work goes over the interviewers head but the interviewer thinks they know better, but because it hasn't been part of a conversation, the nuances are lost.

IMO if you’re going to give a coding question the task should be extremely simple. Like writing a very simple function because the point of seeing how/what someone codes is to see their style. I once had to implement levenshtein distance (measure distance between 2 words of not necessarily the same length). All they look for is that’s you can 1) translate a task to code 2) write clean code 3) write correct code 4) write tests. Including tests this should be <50 lines of code (depending on the langue)

Yeah I never ask algo questions, I ask more real world stuff like fetching some data and doing something with it. Then ask follow ups based how they implemented it. A lot of it is to check their problem solving, communication skills, ability to debug, etc. I always start off giving them advice on what to focus on / what I’m looking for and let them know it’s fine to look up APIs. I try to give them the best shot possible and help them relax a bit if possible since code interviews can be high stress.

honestly not sure how I would feel on it; I know the argument that it basically extracts work from interviewees, but I personally hate the pressure of trying to come up with code on the spot. Much nicer IMO if I can have time to examine and analyze the problem on my own.

My opinion is already a bit low seeing they don’t publish pay ranges, imo all roles should publish pay ranges. It can be pretty wide imo, but why waist ppls time or yours with not listing it. Also not listing it feels like you are doing the typical big business I want to pay you as little as you’ll agree to not I want to pay you what your worth.

The problem is too many ppl are scared or uncomfortable sharing pay with co-workers, so companies profit of us not knowing our peers make more/less and should demand more/less. Sure sometimes the pay is for a skill gap, but imo a company should be easily able to defend a pay gap or else there shouldn’t be one.

I think a lot of tech workers also have good leverage / job opportunities, so my personal experience has been the employer does more to accommodate me and if they become PITA I just leave for a new job.

If the tables were flipped and there was surplus in tech workers I think there would be higher demand for unions.

(the oddest thing about going through CS was hearing people rant and complain about learning assembly / how a CPU worked at a low level... they would tell me "well you're not gonna use assembly in industry" but like, you're in CS, don't you wanna learn how the computer actually works?! one of the coolest things to me)

Yeah I have interviewed and worked with some ppl from boot camps that were amazing devs, but it’s easy to graduate from one and not be a good dev too.

My personal experience has been those that love coding end up becoming great devs no matter the background, those that jump in for the money often get stuck at the meh stage and struggle to get to or beyond a Sr level.

The slightly frustrating thing is I'm not the greatest at algorithms/data structures type of problems - I understand what different ones are used for and understand some key algorithmic ideas, but coming up with the optimal efficient solution isn't my forte - so I feel like I'd probably be better focusing on being able to write maintainable software. You improve at both with time, one of the best things you can do is just keep coding. Keep trying to solve new problems, ask more experienced devs you trust for help and to review your code. It’s a journey that legit never ends, 5 years from now you’ll be amazed how much you have learned and how much you feel like you still want to improve on.

If your not a full time employee yet you can try looking for some open source issues you can solve. There are often projects overrun with small issues since they are mostly maintained by ppl in spare time. If it’s a project with good maintainers that should give you a chance to get feedback on your PR from experienced devs.

yeah, i'm sorta in the position where I need to start pulling an income, so my current angle is talking with some coworkers of my dad, since he works in iOS app development and I'm interested in the same job, alongside throwing together a portfolio with an actual completed app and trying to freelance a bit. Not the best for code growth but it seems like the most solid path, just networking+experience until I can get the full time job

Not sure what country you are in, but I know here in the US there a decent amount of companies that hire fresh grads from college or code boot camps if you did graduate from one of those. If not yeah it can be a bit hard to get past the recruiter to even do a technical.

Lots of start ups hire new devs, competition can be a little high on entry level roles but they deff exist / personally have conducted interviews for a few.

Yup most devs I know are now remote, even the ones close to offices don’t go in a lot anymore. Personally I have been remote for many years before COVID so it’s normal to me, idk if I’d ever take a office only job. 😅

But if you feel an office is important just keep in mind a lot of companies that have an office may still not have a lot of devs there in person.
