maybe someone knows, but how do I make it so I can stream "locally", so a another device on my network can just enter the IP of this system and see the stream if it makes any sensehttps://media.discordapp.net/attachments/184324186284621824/890983761968259122/unknown.png
basically looking for obs to be a RTSP server?
Yea as long as someone externally can just put my IP on the browser and see a video stream of whatever is being streamed thru OBS I think

MMm okay ill see
Anyone willing to figure out ddclient with me-?
I wanna use https://dynv6.com, but only need to update ipv6 as my router only is able to correctly set ipv4
what are some useful things i can do with my pi apart from ubiquiti controller and a pihole ?
its a 4gb model if that helps
we aren't going to get a quick answer id say..
Id say maybe an apache webserver.
Like a small personal website
Ah, well, thats also possibly, im hosting a mc server + webserver and probably a ftp server aswell on an ThinClient. So yeah, simmilar performance
anyone? please?
im starting to loose my nerves on this.. ive been trying for 4h now..
Anybody here know a good switch with at least 2.5gbe ports that are poe or poe+? I want it to be managed and not to loud/energy draining.
which OS should i be using in my pi to do all this stuff ?
Arch
802.3af/A PoE & 24V PoE // (4) PoE+ IEEE 802.3af/at (Pins 1, 2+; 3, 6-)
so the one on the right is the switch and the one on the left is the WAP will i need to run a PoE injector still ?
oh ok because i had a read and some said they my WAP wasnt supported but it says its supported on my the box
also if i want to make it all ubiquiti can i get a router from them and run a WAP with it. Or do i get a dream machine ?
idk i thought it would be easier/ better to get someone that does it all
i got the ubiquiti switch lite 8 poe its basically the us 8 60w but newer
it’s no longer using then OpenVPN protocol
will i be able to do seamless roaming if i go all ubiquiti ?
don't need to go all ubiquiti for seamless roaming
just to use a controller for the APs
i got a pi
anybody having any luck finding ubiquiti stuff these days? i still haven't been able to get a replacement for my fried ER-X
i got a router downstairs that does the job covering downstairs and i got a switch upstairs and a WAP
i wanted the US 8 60W
got an RMA number but i double checked and was like "do you actually have replacements in stock" and they got back to me a week later and were like "oh uh sorry actually we were just gonna take your return and then make you wait until march 2022 when we have more coming"
but they said they are waiting for them to release gen 2
look on ebay
oh interesting
and on r/homelabsales
yeah i might just buy one there
its just gonna be a pain to wait, the whole reason i jumped on this one was cuz it was available immediately
i just got the lite 8 port switch
its basically the same
edge routers i only found used or super overpriced
so say i have the controller i will be able to set the same ssid ?
you can have the same ssid without controller
just it won't be seamless
1-2 second drop in connection
oh but if its the same brand it will ?
no it needs to the same brand with a controller
the controller controls the AP clients and does the seamless part
that assumes the client supports seamless roaming

Anybody here know a good switch with at least 2.5gbe ports that are poe or poe+? I want it to be managed and not to loud/energy draining.
Then you're looking at about $450 700 to $1000 for PoE+ and managed
Otherwise a non-managed 2.5GbE switch without PoE can be had for around $150 to $200
Netgear ms510txpp seems to be the cheapest
I don't mind more expensive if they're a little older since switches go good on second hand market
and I got a ruckus r650 so now I don't want to cheap on switch
Yah, I'd poke around online and get reviews for 8 or 16 port switches available with the features you need
@waxen scroll looking at your emotes you don't agree?
non managed 😩
gotta pay that managlement tax 😄
A well worth it tax
If you're an old person with 0 experience in networking non managed isn't that bad
Well yeah, but for me its a well worth it tax
Yup, love managed gear 😄
go switch go https://i.ryois.me/Giv4OZA4Kb.png
@clear igloo This site I manage....they put a smart thermostat on the guest WiFi 😩
haha, whoops
guest friendly heating
Guests still can't access it anyways lol
sad
LAN to WLAN multicast & broadcast are blocked except coming from the router and clients are isolated from each other
@clear igloo I should try and get them to get a Cradlepoint 4G LTE failover
Dew it!
My router keeps disconnecting from the internet, last thing I did was take the fiber cable out to cable manage it
I put the cable back in good, I know it's not the issue, can someone help me troubleshoot
dust could have got in it
The cable or the router?
The router is clean, idk about the cable
It seems to be fairly stable now, I'll check if it disconnects again
The cable isn't something that can break easily, right?
the cable not really, it's probobly high bend rated
the connectors are sensitive though (to dust and other contaminants)
Shit, I dropped the one connected to the router connector-side down, doesn't seem to have any damage tho
Not really dropped but it hit a piece of wood when cable managing
(edited) oh
Well it appears to be stable now, I'll check for dust if it disconnects again. Thanks
sadly, i don't think there's a non managed poe+ multigig switch, BUT trendnet has some good unmanaged multigig. I have MS510TX (without the final poe) and...i DO NOT like the software/OS
lol
also, ms510txpp was impossible to find for good price here in canada 😦 so i just got some injectors
Actually there are a few unmanaged 2.5Gb switches in the sub-$200 range
WHAT? where?
Qnap has one and Trendnet TEG s350 come to mind
BUT no PoE options that I know of that are unmanaged
oooh that was it yea, i wanted an SFP+ port, i was ok with giving up the POE (cuz i only have one poe powered device so injector was fine)
netgear did this ddumb thing where it refused to use DHCP upon connection was a PITA to configure on first boot
are there any Wifi APs that have (and make use of) a 2.5GbE port? or one that's actually just a wifi AP BUT does not use Poe but a power adapter?
There are but they're usually $$$ (for now)
oh yea thats what I thought...what about any that use a power adapter instead of poe?
i just...i don't trust poe
There are some I know of that have the option for both
i found a few that are either $$$ or not Aps but actually mesh router things
I know the newer Ruckus models have that option, Aruba does on some, and most Cisco APs too but again those are all going to need a controller of some kind (built in or cloud based at least) and will likely set you back a bit much
i guess wifi AP are still geared towards businesses
Yah, consumers just want things that work and they don't have to think about
so...i have somehow ended up with a cat5e 2 pair...i didn't even know that was a thing. also a cat4 cable
Why not
no good reason
You sure it's cat5e
It's in the wall?
that's my question...IS IT? CAN it be a cat5e is its only 2 pair?
Could be the weird thing some do to put multiple phone lines onto one cable
the cat4 i have no idea how i acquired it. the 2 pair cat5e is the cable that came with phillips hue
like its not old either i have at some point in the last 5 years acquired this cat4 cable
And the cable itself is fine? Idk
uhh no it is not, it won't do poe OR >100mbps
You terminated it yourself?
nope, the cat5e cable, is labelled as such, 2 pair and came with my phillips hue
my question is, doesn't cat5e necesitate 4 pair?
Cuz the cable jacket can say cat5e and have 8 wires in there but it's just terminated with 2?
Idk
oooh
Just thinking of possible things
ok that makes sense, so someone bought a cat5e cable but terminated it with only 2pair, yea that makes sense
cuz why would a lightbulb need 4 pairs
Does the cable feel thicker than just 2 wires?
oh yea look at that...4 pairsinside
now, what is the easiest way to tell how many cats are inside a cable
What it says on the jacket?
nothing
jacket is blank, i'm curious about this cable i just found it with my things and it's clearly not cat5e bcuz it chopped my connection speed down to 100mbps
has anyone here done offsite VPS hosting a dns server?
Generally it's not reccomended to run a public DNS server
yeaa that's what I thought, I'm trying to think of the easiest way to get my dad some dnsbl
I could buyand install a pi or router in his house but thats potentially costly
And he has shudder "community wifi"
i run a pihole at the house, you can get pi's pretty cheap.
yea but...community wifi
block ads for the community?
I wish
i'm not familiar with how to set it up, but i think if you could get him to VPN to your network where you have pihole or other dns filtering running, that could work.
community wifi is the ultimate dumbing down of internet access and technology. basically the isp manages the router, the modern, the wifi everything . no one has any access to any of it, u just get a wifi login as if you're in a hotel
you could also maybe configure opendns or something for him
you would just have to manually set the dns server in the computers network config
oohi like that idea. is it possible to use the tunnel for only dns.?
i'm sure there is a way, i'm just not sure how
maybe someone else has a good answer?
cool Ill look into that good idea, thx
btw community wifi makes me want to cry. like the idea that it's a thing
i mean in that case i'd definitely have them on a VPN like PIA
but why...
A local ISP provides community wifi downtown and such.
Its nice since they prove really good speeds downtown compared to VZW
And since its the same ISP that I have at home, i get around 5ms to home, so VPN is easy
You just have a blip with Fios a few mins ago?
v6?
I haven't been monitoring
@clear igloo That question I had the other day regarding runs to the sound desk...We're just gonna run 4 Cat6 🤣
Have dedicated Cat6 for everything back to the switch
oooh yea that kind of community wifi is awesome. What i mean is when it replaces your home internet...and you're not allowed to get another
ohhh
yea its weird. for the ISP is aewsome, you have a condo or apt building and you just put one big router in and abunch of APs, gotta be tonnes cheaper than giving everyone a modem and router thing. whenever someone moves and wnats internet you just create an account on the wifi thing for them and charge them the same amount of money as usual. No Ethernet cables to consumer equipment just wifi APs and a big router in the basement or smthg
🥴
Hey guys, I need some help with upgrading my WiFi setup. I've a 1200mbps dual band router which is a bit far from my room so I don't get the 5ghz signal and rest of the devices in my room struggle to get good network bandwidth from the 2.4ghx signal so I was thinking of buying a dual band router which also works as a WiFi repeater but I'm not sure if it will simultaneously take the dual band signal from the main router and then extend both of those networks to my room. Can you guys tell me if that's how it works?
Soo I was tasked for my assignment to plan out an internet cafe..
I wanted to do a NAS system.. and I'm kind of confused.. For the client side, I don't need any SSD or HDD right? since everything will be in the server unit.. or do I need an SSD for every client unit just for boot drives?
tell me if I do make sense.. I'm bad at english
You could do PXE boot, but that would require robust networking setup.
Yeah.. but I dont need to kind of storage on my client unit right? I dont need to put an SSD or HDD on it
Woke up today, network keeps disconnecting. I checked the fiber cable for dust etc. found nothing.
It disconnects like every 10 minutes and comes back 20-30 seconds later
In enterprises, what software is typically used for PXE boot on the server side?
Nice
unless you do pxe boot, which is iirc booting off of a network, which is a whole thing you have to setup - you need at least SOME sort of boot drive, possibly with at least a bare minimum os installed on it
No clue
Hey. I have2 routers in my house one is a shitty isp router (i have to keep it or my internet craps itself) and a Asus rog rapture. The Asus router keeps disconnecting and when its "UP" it can only access certain websites.
@latent bobcat 25 gig a good upgrade
wym
is that a window size for ants? how is discord usable
vertical monitor
You simply turn off member list
You don't need it anyways, I always have it off
TFTP
Along with a DHCP server that supports BOOTP
iPXE, Fog, Digital Rebar, TinyPXE, Windows Deployment Service.
so.. ive been having a lot of problems lately
I am currently planning on building a Plex Server for my media consumption. Mostly music, but also movies. The CPU is a Ryzen 5 2600 and I am looking for a GPU. Should I just go for CPU transcoding or is it smart to go with a more powerful dedicated GPU?
If you're not going to be streaming like 5 4k videos at the same time CPU is plenty fine
@peak cloak The issue was with either;
My router was overheating
The antenna cable
I got a new antenna cable and it works now
I also put a desk fan next to the router which is blowing onto the router
We'll see if it breaks again
Yikes, that usually means the Antenna was either Out of Tune or shorted to Shield
I have no idea what any of thoose means but I know it's the cable because that's the only thing I messed with
Out of tune then
Oh. Nah don't think so
It was fine for like 5 years but it broke just when I messed with the cables
So I very much doubt it's out of tune
Cable Length is what determines the Tuned Frequency
It was still fine for 5 years with the same cable
Although if that was the case, then what most likely happened is the cable broke inside and part of it was becoming the radiator instead of the antenna itself
Mismatched Radiators to Transceivers turns the power it cant radiate into heat
well... fuck you then
how is the base address invalid
trying to set up IPv6 because i want the full /64 block
still on the ISP modem/router because i am broke and when i buy one ill need VLANs so ill not waste money now
ill give up and buy a better router
Isn't that a link local address
You need to get ipv6 prefix from isp
yes thats for DHCPv6
i can use outbound IPv6 without DHCPv6?
outbound? you mean public ipv6 addresses?
yes
and yes
without 6to4
DHCPv6 was an afterthought, the right way to assign v6 is SLAAC
android doesn't even support DHCPv6
Learn the new available methods for performing address configuration, and how to implement DHCPv6 in IPv6, and the best options for stateless configuration. Walk through a detailed sample SLAAC configuration on a Cisco device to be sure you can apply what you’ve learned to your situation.
this has nothing to do with isp
i mean for outbound
I mean like for SLAAC
yes thats unrelated to the ISP
I mean ipv6 was initally conceived in like 2000
i cant get outbound IPv6 if the ISP doesnt support it
well, you can with a tunnel
yes 6to4
that's what I use
no
but it has issues with big MTUs
no the other way around
yeah
having IPv6 packets inside IPv4 packets
and since they are bigger you have issues with MTUs bigger than around 1400
well... ill just use a static local address
since i already have a static IPv4 local address anyway
because this ISP router is shit
i was using a custom DHCP server but my pi's HDD died
so ill just change router in a bit
also about this, even if you were using DHCPv6 you wouldn't use a link-local address
people have a hard time understanding in v6, that there is no more NAT
your devices get public IPs
imo ISPs should be giving at least a /56
with a /64 you can't subnet it at all
without breaking core principals of ipv6
i get internet over coaxial, then into my bridged router from my ISP and then it goes into my opnsense box. the problem is im loosing WAN IP time to time.. i spoofed my MAC adress, but i still loose the ip. how do i troubleshoot it? im "new" to linux routers. but i have some linux experiance. but not sure how to troubleshoot it.. where to check and all that :)
opnsense isn't linux btw, there should be a dhcp log, see what it's saying
@peak cloaktrue, but Linux and BSD are pretty close to eachother. ran FreeBSD on some systems a few years
cant find dhcp log for wan..
Hmm, I'm not too familiar with opnsense
wait, found now
trying to understand, haha
Pastebin.com is the number one paste tool since 2002. Pastebin is a website where you can store text online for a set period of time.
looks like my bridged router/modem goes down.. without any warning
the funny thing is my isp has not support if i put it in bridged mode.. so im pretty much stranded.. cant get any logs on my isp modem..
Need some help replacing my router I currently have the Netgear r6300v2
@rocky badge friend who uses the dumb google router was asking me about a ubnt 6 LR today
🤩
Hi, I'm studying about data communication and checksum. When adding the bits together to get the checksum, do we do normal binary addition or do we do XOR?
Hi i have a very weird issue. i got HG8342R from a friend and when i try to connect it to my system it doesnt give me ip(dhcp is off) and i cant access the login page as it default login ip is also not working.
Try the reset button using an ball point pen then it should go to factory setting allowing you to use the login page with the default login
i tried no luck
Maybe a dumb question but was it powered on?
that's because dhcp isn't on, so your computer is just broadcasting on an autoconfig ip of it's own
try looking in the manual online and seeing if you can follow the reset instructions
ok lads, looking at redoing home network with some ubiquiti APs, what are your suggestions on rack mount switches I should get?
I'm searching for a 2.5gbe or higher switch. Preferably quite and cisco.
Anyone know a switch like that?
You joking or serious?
I'm serious 😅 am I stupid?
I’ll explain in a minute
Ye ik that
each channel is a different freqency
But I didn't know it was that wide of a range
WLAN (wireless local area network) channels are frequently accessed using IEEE 802.11 protocols, and equipment that does so is sold mostly under the trademark Wi-Fi. Other equipment also accesses the same channels, such as Bluetooth. The radio frequency (RF) spectrum is vital for wireless communications infrastructure.
The 802.11 standard provid...
Exactly what I was gonna send
can go up to 5895mhz in the US if used indoors without registration
Oh niceee
Soo the higher the better right?
in Japan, in other countries you just can't use it
yeah kinda
Mine is running at 5745 so it's pretty good ig
it all depends on the situation
^
Ohh okay
These are all the aps broadcasting nearby none of them is on the same channel , (removed ssid to not dox)
I'm on 149
2.4GHz probably
That's the direct connection of my pc or my tv
There's no channel 2 for 5ghz iirc
Yeah my pc
yeah ok DIRECT
My 2.4ghz band is also on same channel
that's why i presume a printer
Ye
for me, 5GHz channels make a heap of difference
Some lights are connected to the 2.4 channel , nothing else
fair enough
This is why I had to plan freq for this 😩 https://i.ryois.me/l2uxFBEXZZ.png
omg
(nearby APs)
Wut
ohhh
263 nearby APs in the last hour
Wtf lmaoooo
Only 18 for me
You can guess which network sucks
U live in an apartment?
no
Oo
Bro probably lives on a highway or smth
My main SSID is 5GHz only
Lmao
IoT is 2.4/5
My iot is 2.4 only
My current AP can't do split
My main is 5 only
I'm not running VLANs or anything, so I just have different APs with DHCP off
I have a pretty low end tp link router
But it works fine
I only have 1 ap works for my entire home
I have 3
Yea mine is like 1400 sq.ft
Adjusted the transmit power on them lol
I may get another one for basement, but it's not finished so whatever
Another blob yay
Why are so many showing up? Running diff bands at the same time?
Those are clients
Slow internet moment
Ohh okay
My 5ghz only has 3 clients connected atm
Probably the tv, my phone and either my mom's or dad's phone
We have around 10+ clients even when nobody's home.... 😂 https://i.ryois.me/lmWzHMJfyU.png
I have 0 clients on 5ghz when no one's home
My security cam is also on 2.4
I have around 4 clients on 2.4 on 24/7
why
?
like same ssid as main network?
why on different SSIDs
My current AP is an expensive tri-ssid thing (1 x 2.4, 2 x 5)
so I thought I might as well use second 5ghz for something
?
Mine is dual ssid
Wait nvm my router does do 4 ssids
having multiple SSIDs ain't that novel
Mine does 4
we bought it when we could only get 12/1 because adsl
Bruh
Woaaaaa
now we have nbn (that shit thing) we get 100/20 but modem doesn't have a proper rj45 WAN port so I use it as an AP with a pfsense rig
does the job fine, until we start losing reception on the other side of the house
With more SSIDs, more beacons, which means less actual air time for data
yeah, I only have 2 rn
This is 802.11g, AC will handle it better, but that can still happen.
20 upload
Just get ftth
300
300 what?
Mum ain't paying $3.8k for 15 metres of fibre
300 mbps upload
We only have 500Mbps and I want it to be symmetrical with our download
Ew what isp , mine ran the fiber for free and is giving me 2 months 150 symmetrical + calls + TV channels free
we can get 100/40 but our ISP doesn't allow it
And after it ends it's 10$ a month for 100mbps symmetrical + calls
Copper bad
everyone who had 100/40 got kicked off their plan and now has 100/20 for the same price
Our ISP ran 3 miles of fiber for my friend for free
And he gets gigabit/500 for the same price everyone else does
if g.fast was a thing they would turn on I would be much happier
How much for gigabit symmetrical per month?
They don’t offer gig up :(((
What about gig / 500 ?
$65/mo
Better than the only other fiber ISP, AT&T
And what about 10 gigabit?@rocky badge
$90/mo for gigabit/gigabit and it’s not even everywhere here
Not an option from anybody.
Local ISP is going to get service everywhere before going multi gigabit
Oof
Tbf, most people don't need gigabit
it's only useful sometimes for downloading/uploading
they’ve been around for 2 years and gotten to 150k customers/50% of their target range ¯_(ツ)_/¯
So that’s pretty decent progress
not all services can handle it anyway, look at google
Considering their team size
that's what I mean, more than gigabit is really for lots of people
not for high speed single connections
I think 10 gigabit was around 200-250 a month here
lmfao
yeah I think 200-300 is what most people can utilize
Yeah, my local RSL took me behind the scenes into their server room, they have 1Gb symmetrical and that's more than enough for them
why does LTT need 10 gigabit
because they can
they don't
yea exactly
I mean there is value to it
you can have multiple people downloading games at gigabit
Exactly
they have over 20 people now
wait what
and Linus just bought a huge house
and was considering a million dollar TV
yeah haha
Do I bother moving my pfsense machine into a rack mount case, or just leave it on the floor?
idk
I'm searching for a 2.5gbe or higher switch. Preferably quite and cisco. Anyone know a switch like that?
hey guys, i upgraded my network to 10Gigabit, connected NAS --10Gb Fiber-->MS510TX -- 2.5Gbe--> windows desktop. Ran iperf and no matter what i do i CANNOT go above 1.2Gbps. Any advice on what to look at, what am i doing wrong?
you sure you have sfp+ module on NAS?
and sfp+ module on switch
physically it's all there, switch, server and desktop all report correct physical connection speeds
troubleshoot invididual segments?
try to test to a different computer on switch?
hmm yea, unfortunately this is the only >1Gbe computer i have
it DOES go above 1Gigabit, unless it's a calculation mistake i DO get higher than 1Gbe (1.1, 1.2 etc) but it kinda stops tehre
OMG...i installed the realtek driver, and that did it, never mind, wow that's dumb
nice
if it was 90$ cheaper I would buy it lmfao
🇨🇦 ?
70 a month for symmetrical here, I need to call to see what 2 gigabit costs.
what is the disadvantage of going jumbo frames btw? are there going to be some devices that just fail to cnnect?
2Gb is an option for you? nice
i got 1 mb download and upload halp
both sides need to use support it, and there isn't much benefit at a small scale
In 3 months
linus is lmg staff does that mean linus doesn't own ltt?
it's used to save bandwidth on IP headers by putting more data in a frame
my life is a scam
The buildout got paused because the contractors kept breaking sidewalks and not fixing them so the city pulled their permits.
so what happens if i try to connect to my jumboframe NAS with my non jumbo frame chromebook?
I mean that's not how it works
isn't it?
my NAS is configured to do jumbo frames. my chromebook is not...what happens if i try to download a file from my NAS on my chromebook?
does the naas know to use 1500MTU, does the switch convert?
don't think so, routers do
or just don't use jumbo frames?
Path MTU Discovery
?
It discovers the max MTU allowed across the path, it doesn't always work for IPv4 but on a local network it should
IPv6 codifies this into the protocol whereas IPv4 does not
oh cool, thanks
oh man yet another reaason to do ipv6
but generally I don't think it's recommended to use jumbo frames
oh...does jumbo frames not offer big increases? (or enough to make it worthwhile?)
Correct, jumbo frames are only really useful in data centers, you won't ever get jumbo frames over the internet
ooh
Hey everyone! building a new home network. looking at the TP Link Omada line or the Ubiquiti stuff. So I'm looking at firewall/router, managed switch, and 2 APs (wifi 6). No need for a separate device controller since I'll have direct access to everything. YT shows several of the latest TP link routers having an easier to use interface. Ubiquiti has a large following. Any thoughts which route to go? TP seems more prosumer styled which I'm kinda leaning towards.
TP Link Omada is really only good for APs
I don't like ubiquiti unifi line routers either
also for seamless wifi roaming you want to have a controller
is there another line of network gear that I should be looking at then?
I wanted everything at home under one management....that threw some stuff out. I also wanted super easy and simple. So I'm running UniFi at home. Since I was willing to pay a little, the price wasn't that bad. I would love Meraki stuff but that's $$$$.
And since school & work, I haven't had much time to fuck around with stuff. So its nice that I don't have to touch it ever. 😂
i do like the idea of having everything under a single management interface.
Unifi is good for that
Spin up a DNAC cluster in your home? 😛
not yet....hoping to get away from cat6
What's wrong with cat6
nothing....if you only want cat6 speed
I mean do fiber then
yeah thats the dream
10gig on copper be like...
i get rid of my old homelab equitment last year and just kept the best...so I have like 5 switches and some other stuff but thats it.....i need to finish my desktop upgrade before i work on networking
aren't Cisco stuff expensive?
isn't copper basically capable of 100gb in short runs?
Speaking of expensive. 😩 😩 https://i.ryois.me/6t2POs6bFQ.png
New they are....i got a massive haul a few years ago at a really good price.....had to sort through it all and sold some of the stuff to cover the initial cost but i considered it an invenstment into learning the command line for cisco switches and a big learning opportunity in general
Looking up ProfiSharks
Yeah
Well
Misread that, thought it said 10
aah, I do have one old Cisco switch I got for cheap. the other thing is they seem big and power hungry
can confirm...they are power hungry
Copper actually has less latency than fiber
I just got 1 fiber run for the cool factor
Old Cisco Catalyst, 48 port Gigabit PoE+, 2960S. Used 40W just on boot
Not actually switching anything
fiber is good for the body.....but i like fiber cuz its smaller in size
which is hilarious cuz there's no actual way for me to saturate that 10Gb link even for testing
yeah...the boot powerdraw on some servers is rediculous
WOW
WHY?
are new ones better?
new stuff in the DC's are much more efficient
granted ur using 3 phase
instead of single
or a DC bus bar
3 phase?
and normally not 120v
DC to DC to remove AC/DC conversion in each unit
3 phase wouldn't affect efficiency on the actual device?
3 phase power is common in DC's its more efficient
oh
I'm using like 350W rn in my lab
not that im awware of
2 servers, 3 switches, 3 APs, router
ooh that's not bad
I mean 3 phase just has more power, idk about efficiency
what are the 2 servers
R620 and DL360pG8
Ik higher voltage is more efficient tho
A three-phase power supply delivers power at a steady, constant rate. ... three-phase power, three-phase power supplies are more efficient.
TWO servers?
Yes
proxmox?
ESXi
lab/prod and strictly prod
how much was esxi again?
aah ok
$0
i use proxmox....granted iv had stuff offline for a while cuz I had a storm issue...and the power bill hurt
idk how u guys afford all this network gear, that shits expensive. upgrading to multigig cost me like $600
I spaced it out over time and budget it out
My entire homelab is like $2.5k
Mine is like 500 bucks
big tip: graph price flucuation for whatever you want to add....then debate if its worth it
My next thing is ups
ow lord....id never afford a UPS
iv just given up
unless you do this insanity
car battery hooked up to a Chinese something for control and power output
yall know how painfull those nuts are in server racks when ya got to remove them....i aint never forgetting that
I could spend more money on my homelab but I'm gonna buy a new laptop
Rackstuds
yeah
those hurt
ow my b
aww nice
im debating between pixel 6 and a nice chromebook tablet I think there finally a couple potentially good ones coming out
I'm about to spend ~$2.8k on laptop + accessories
@clear igloo Parents said if they ever build/gut and renovate a new house, they'll let me do all of the networking :)
Nice!
OS2 SM everywhere, Cat6A everywhere, APs everywhere
ik my next purchase is going to be a ssd cuz im on a hard drive and its so slow.....its nuts
14-30R in the server room pls
AP on the toilet? Check
AP on the stove? Check
AP in the shower? Check

AP in the rack?
Now that's just silly
aww nice. I'm hoping to convince my sister to let me do the cabling in her new house
AP in the rack oof
ooh yea, man makes such a difference I didn't believe at first
I believe....sometimes the lag when im opening stuff is like in the seconds
I've been pondering ssd for my nas as read cache. even red ssd is cheap enough but I gotta upgrade my mobo to do it
Probably 3K or so 😛
ssd for nas cache.....depends on what your using the NAS for
Less than I thought
switched & metered too
port mirroring is good if you want to do logging
This is a PDU :P
ow
i honestly couldnt tell....i thought it was listing power requirments
idk...i had a brain fart
I would so totally run a house off of an ASA tbh lol
calculating subnets and ranges for IPV6 hurts compared to v4
it's a small sacrifice to pay
neither ISPs here support it
Optimum (Atlice) and Verizon Fios
RIP
Verizon has some intention of doing it
Some have it for a little
some ra's
as for optimum, I have no clue
switched last year
I have a python script logging my internet speed....hoping to connect that up with a grafana dashboard
Wow what’s going on with spectrum? I’m supposed to get 200mpbs and usually get 235 but it’s a bit higher today? I’m not complaining but that’s higher then normal
Thats actually decent price/performance
Only downside is its an ASA
"Slightly bent"
I have a quick question, I tried starting a dedicated game server for my friends and it didn't work, so I port forwarded the port, disabled my firewall for that port, and now every time I use canyouseeme.org it now says connection refused, is there anyway I can fix this?
@waxen scroll @clear igloo
i don't see the problem, i mean, maybe with #2 but ther'es plenty of gaps in the thing it's not like it's a faraday cage
Howdy folks, I'm looking for a good Wi-Fi 6 (preferably 6e) router, any recommendations?
I would recommend ASUS 6-Stream Wireless AX5400, unless you are looking for really high end equipment
Does it 'split' into two different networks for 2.4ghz and 5ghz?
Damn my dad for his work (walkie talkies) has to suddenly learn fibre optics because he’s not allowed to plug into a RJ-45 port by the network provider and now will use 3 pairs of dedicated fibre optic cables for 10kb packets over a distance of 600 metres
That’s the government for ya ^
(It’s for a location where there are “spare” fibre optic cables buried underneath the ground by the national internet/telecom infra provider just in case but the repeaters for walkie talkies are not allowed to be plugged into their own network so they will use three dedicated pairs of fibre optic capable of 400 gigabit for 10 kb packets)
For the three locations
I sent my dad the video where Linus explains a bit of the different options in fibre optic when they were installing 25 gigabit lol
hey anyone here use pfsense
i need your help
i am having problems port-forwarding and i think it might just be something stupid i have overlooked
There are quite a few people here that can help. What are you trying to do? What problem are you facing? What have you tried?
did you make firewall rules to allow the open ports through ? https://docs.netgate.com/pfsense/en/latest/nat/port-forwards.html
yes
i am remaking them at the moment to see if that will do anything
thats what it looks like rn
Just gotta curve the bits to get them in
That's a good deal, have fun with power and cooling though 😛
How good are netgear switches? I found a pretty good deal but don't know anyone that can vouch for them compared to cisco
dual 1.2kW PSUs
Yup, and pretty loud 😄
Not even lurick recommend ASA
anyone know Cisco gear? wth is SASR1KHXK9
I've never had any issues with them . compared to Cisco, they seem more geared toward consumer space, soho, enthusiast etc. their sw ux for managed stuff leaves much to be desired though
u know what's odd, I never understood that. doesn't the fw have a "allow all outbound" rule anyway? at least in my case, "pass in on $if from any to any port 80 -> $server port 80" is the only rule I need and that's just the nat rule, the traffic then matches the "pass out all" rule
Looked up in the ordering tool. That doesn't exist. Tried a few variations.
With google this is the best I could find
Is this channel for connecting with people or internet networking?
It's not about the networking knowledge we learn, it's about the friends we make along the way.
but in all seriousness just read the channel description

'Ello! I'd love some help figuring out the best, cheapest solution to help my partner set their networks up on their room
They have an ethernet cable coming from the router and they'd like to have two to connect to two pcs and private wifi. I'm not knowledgeable about it but maybe any router in bridge (?) mode would do? I'm afraid of spending on a good router only for it to be OP for the situation
wdym by private wifi?
as for ethernet, just get a switch and connect the existing cable
oh, separate from their family's wifi
if it's on the same ethernet network it won't be seperate
oh, fair enough
you can have a different SSID (name) but it will be on a network level, the same subnet
On my room I have a splitter and use two ethernets but i don't think that's what they're after @.@
is it worth buying one just to have two ethernet cables running from it?
if you need too sure, they ain't expensive
no clue, need specs
most switches are at least 5 ports
do they need extra power, too?
oh LOL
need something like this
it has a 1 in 2 out setting, didn't even cross my mind that it was for literally switching between networks lol
i'm from brazil btw, over here it costs 125 reais (kinda expensive) @.@
oh fudge lol
13,50 is such a good price, wish it was on my currency though x.x
could look for some local brand of network switch
this one seems reasonable, but I don't know their internet speed
tbh it's probably not over 200mbps
it's 10/100 so it uses the 10Base-T and 100Base-T ethernet standards, so it can't do over 100mbps
if their internet is 100mbps and they want to use this switch for two computers, will it be enough of will it result in sluggish internet?
not really
the 10/100 link may be tho
with this specific switch
but other wise no, I have 2 switches I use in the 2nd floor because I can't run more ethernet cables without ripping out drywall
so there's only 2 cables going from basement to 2nd floor
yea, at any price range below R$200 I don't think I'll find anything other than 10/100 :<
10/100 is usuable if that's what you can afford
oh cool!
if you can run a second cable, that will be cheaper
one last thing, is it possible to use one of these things to both split internet and make another access point?
yeah you could, but you may run into problems with double nat, since it will basically isolate the clients behind that router. With most cheap routers you may be able to get around that by turning off dhcp and trying to plug the ethernet from main router to the LAN ports instead of WAN to make it basically act as Access Point and switch
i'd have to go to my partners house to set it up and it's not really a possibility at the moment, so I'll probably just go with the switch solution, hmm
double nat isn't THAT big of a deal
oh shoot, their internet is 300mbps LOL
just if you are doing anything with port forwarding or maybe something with cast to TV, or anything that utilizes broadcast
yeah need gigabit ports to support that
oooh ok that makes sense, thanks
Okay, so I was just talking to them and I misinterpreted their goals
They want to have another wifi access point and pass 1 ethernet cable through it to use on their pc
so it'd be fine to use any gigabit router as an access point + ethernet passthrough? (no clue how to configure this but I can google it afterwards)
Best way imo would be to use a switch and then get an AP, but if on budget that would work too
Tplink sells these APs, with switch in them, idk if it would be out of budget
Omada AC1200 Wireless Gigabit Wall-Plate Access Point EAP235-Wall provides dual-band Wi-Fi of up to 1200 Mbps, also 4 Gigabit Ethernet ports for bridging (1× uplink + 1× downlink), with one downlink port supporting PoE pass-through to provide power for wired device. Ideal for the use in hotel rooms, hospital, offices, dormitories and any other e...
Wall mount, Poe powered
idk what poe is
power over ethernet
so you can power a device and transfer data using only an ethernet cable
^
ok, it's obscenely expensive here lel
Rip
actually that's really smart, lemme see what i can get
ok no, that ends up vv expensive, unfortunately :'c
So, if i can use any cheap gigabit router both as an access point AND as an ethernet pass-through, would it be hard to set-up? (you mentioned subnets and NAT and i'm not really sure i know what those are and how to mess with them)
You can get it to just access the internet just fine by setting it up the normal way, Ethernet from main router into WAN port, PCs into LAN and that's it
But the problem with that is that the devices behind the router are isolated behind the single router IP, as it's doing something called NAT
So you can't let's say access the second router webui from the main router network
oh, that's fine
my partner wants to do this set-up on their room and manage it by themselves
@warm atlas look for second hand gear. You can probably get a ap and poe switch for under 30 euro
I use BRL and things are expensive @.@ i was just looking for it
i can get aps for cheap but they're all 10/100
how fast is your network?
Oh ok, in this situation using a router will be fine
i'm doing this for my partner, their internet is 300mbps
awesome!! Thank you so vv much!!!
Question for you guys. Is there a point to running Fiber (vs Ethernet) for like 50-60 ft?
depends on situation
location? purpose?
Cable run from my attic/closet where the GPON box is to my router. It runs along a conduit inside the wall to a neighbouring room, then along the wall again across the room to the next eroom where the router is
are the walls open right now?
if it's something that would expensive to ever upgrade again, then fiber could be good, but if it's something that will is just running along the wall, then nah imo
ooh no walls are not open, half of it is outside the other half is old wires in a conduit easy enough to pull
Guys how to upgrade my cat 7 cables to cat 3? Idk where to plug them in!
7 cats is too much!!
I cant take care of all of them
My speed is 60 mbps planning to increase to 100mbps next year
I'm looking for router with highest rage without speed drop no need of 5hz band i probably never use it because if i sit in next room there will be 3 concrete walls bewteen me and router currently using backup router which is wnr614 which is giving only 0.5 mbps next room I'm about 9to10 meters away from router
My budget is under 22$ 1600inr
My previous router provided by ISP was wr840n which was giving me 15to20mbps in next room
Your suggestion will be very helpful thank you🙏
i use my isp ap/modem, this is the speed thru 4 concrete walls
So its probably good enough
what isp?
My ISP modem is ded no replacement because out of warranty
I looking to buy tp link wr845n
can you get them still?
Yes
What price? The xiaomi cost my friend like 30 dollars
Not available
oh
Yeah, i only use it to have outdoor wireless
70 dollars
Then avoid the xiaomi
Btw i think the tp link is a solid router if you can get it
Another great option is mercusys, its tp-link but cheaper
Mikrotik are also good IMO
True
wts this channel for
Networking?
Its where you can talk about anything network related, so routers, switches, LANs, Internet, etc.
ohhh
🤔 is there a way to get portable internet for a laptop (not wifi)
i mean no hotspot
😦 i cant talk today xd
I just downloaded arcolinux on my 2015 macbook. Wifi works perfectly in the live enviroment, but after install it cant find my wifi card (wlp4s0)
You might have to isntall some driver that might've been present in the live installer but not in the installed version
But I don't really know much
So, I could be wrong
lte modem
which is hotspot
basically
but does it run as good as internet form a internet provider company
you can't beat a wired connection
i think this is more than enough when you want it to be portable
ofc
i have 30 gb lte for 4 eur
its not that good as tmobile/telekom
but its more than enough for me
Hi I wonder if I'm using vlans, do I need to combined them also with Bridges or not, like their is s point? (Using mikrotik)
@waxen scroll Geo-IP databases need to be purged. Nothing but problems
just update them
Not all can be. For SP near the borders its an unnecessary battle

i got a problem with my router not giving slow speeds on windows only
i posted it on ltt forum
am posting it here
i got a 100 mbps fiber connection recently
It works flawlessly on every device except my 2 laptops while using windows with the same Qualcomm Atheros QCA6174A wifi card.
I have a pop os(ubuntu distro) dual boot on one of those laptops and on pop os i easily get 110-120 mbps up and down while downloading something / using speedtest
However on windows on both laptops i am only able to get around 25 Mbps or so. I have tried
-
Reseting everything network related on both laptops (https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/all/internet-download-speed-is-slow-on-only-one-device/65528449-efc9-4582-8d70-4220b43e0a6c)
-
Changing the wireless mode on both laptops (https://community.acer.com/en/discussion/comment/550011)
-
Perform a clean boot on both laptops (https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/929135/how-to-perform-a-clean-boot-in-windows)
-
Uninstalling, disbaling, enabling updating the wifi card drivers on both laptops
However nothing has worked
NOTE:- -
I am using 5 GHz on both laptops and on ubuntu and windows
-
Both the laptop and router support AC Wifi so have a lot of extra bandwidth to work with
ALSO: The local file transfer speeds are abysmal like i am getting 16-17 mbps on doing that while using my phone's hotspot as lan easily gives 200 mbps
After assessing the situation
-
the problem cant be with windows since in my friend's house i easily get 100 mbps on wifi also the hotspot lan thing works well
-
the problem cant be with my router since i get proper speeds on linux.
where is the problem then
I've been using my predator Helios 300 laptop for a while and all of the sudden the Wireless adapter is having problems with my network.
Describes how to use the clean boot process to troubleshoot a problem in Windows 8.1, Windows 8, Windows 7, or Windows Vista.
have you looked at the connection stats on the device?
like start button, cmd , netsh wlan show interfaces
netsh elan show interfaces above
and that's what it looks like while the issues happening?
have you looked at the router? Like are there any bandwith controls , parental controls?
do you see anything in there about qos?
could try turning QOS , see if it results in a change.
ip qos from enabled to disabled.
probable have to save
might have to reboot for the change to be effective
ok trying
you might want to check the other qos pages as well.
yes
turning off ip qos literally slows the internet so much it doesn't even connect to a speedtest server
nothing
i tired with ip qos off on fast.com
it does work there
but speed's the same
I meant the comment about "turning off ip qos literally slows the internet so much it doesn't even connect to a speedtest server"
interesting
well if QoS being disabled doesn't change it. seems less likely to be a qos issue.
yes
did you check traffic control?
under qos
whats under management?
Could someone help understand that please?
its mostly router management like network config page password or update router image stuff
any device lists some where?
like connected clients?
yah
like things you could try, see if a data transfer between one of them to another local machine is slow.
7k dropped packets is a lot of dropped packets.
hmmmm
what exactly do i have to do
also please note that this speed issue is only in windows
in linux i get full speeds
and in all other devices android, ios , smart tv i get full speeds
that doesn't mean that my laptop's wifi card is slow
i have tested it at my friend's place a few days ago
i got 200 mbps , his exact plan
on windows
so i simply am not able to narrow down where the issue is
are the other devices using the 5g network?
Hey i recently changed my ISP and now i am getting bad pings and joining servers which a far from usual server. What should i tell the isp to fix the issue
and my isp doesnt even know what is gaming (old ppl so kinda old brain )
seems like a small ISP, probably in a given city or place etc
So judging from your name if your from India, it isn't airtel vfibre, jio, or ACT, none of these right?
Does anyone know how to make a wireguard connection controlled by networkmanager reconnect after waking up from sleep?
yep its none of those all my friends have those which is ultrafast and i unfortunately end up living in a Rural area so those arent available so If i could pin point my issue i could tell them to try changing stuff like my routing, dns.... idk
I see, hm
Yah not all isp are created equal. And they don’t usually have the ability to effect change beyond your modem.
idk that there is a good way to check/problem solve from the customer end, unless someone knows more about how ISP and BGP stuff at theeir level works
for starters try traceroute it will give you SOME kind of an idea what hops your route is taking to it's destination
and try stuff like whatismyip when you're having issues see where it thinks you are
sometimes when i have weird issues somehow whereismyip thinks i'm miles away which woujld explain things
Traceroute tbh is one of the best tools
Can't do anything bgp on customer end, that's all on isp routers
I have a Linksys velop system looking to upgrade routers can I plug in new router directly into the velop node?
yea hopefully traceroute+geolocate shd tell you smthg

@clear igloo remember I complained nobody uses port security
found the one person who does: https://www.reddit.com/r/talesfromtechsupport/comments/pz471t/when_byod_is_no_longer_allowed_l/

I like to use MACSEC where possible
MACSEC encrypts data over the physical medium between Device and Switch
So 802.1AE
ive not seen macsec used other than network device to network device. first i've heard of PC endpoints doing it
Ive not done it with PCs but I do it with Servers
Ive also done it with RasPis, the Khadas Amlogic and Rockchip SBC, an ESP32 with an Ethernet Port, reTerminal, and a "Smart Display" SBC
hmm
yeah, the places I work cant do it in the datacenter
they'd shoot themselves in the foot
they run big tap networks
they need to tell "its a network issue" server people off some how
what is port security do?
Well, with Wi-Fi you have some form of authentication
With 802.1X you can require User/Pass login through a Radius server... like LDAP/AD Domain Accounts
However, quite useless if you just need to plug into wall and get direct access to the network
ooh ok so that with ethernet? wow didn't realize that was a thing
You can use 802.1X Authentication over the wire, yes
thats kinda cool. So in that story on the reddit the guy presumably connected a laptop that wasn't authenticated and that shut the dock's access?
no, port security is a basic piece of crap where you tell it the mac addresses allowed to use the port
