Yeah, I was trying to explain I needed good upload speed
They say they provide fast internet
not the marketing download speed. haha
"fast" is not 75Mbps
Especially when an ISP they're competing against is doing 200Mbps base
Yep
And the 1TB cap
lol
Though 200 Mb/s / 20-30 up vs frontier's 150/150 is one interesting battle now
cap sure sucks ๐ฆ
Oh, Charter's 200Mbps plan here is 10Mbps up
owo
Xfinity's modem/router can do this
dont mess up her stuff pls
Check out the NEON K81 (Kailh Blue Switch) on Amazon at http://geni.us/0rk33E Check out the NEON K81 (Kailh Brown Switch) on Amazon at http://geni.us/x5yi Bu...
much network
What's that
haha, that's a interesting progress bar
@subtle glen that picture of the Juniper ssg20, is it yours device ?
I'm asking because I'm deciding between a ssg5 or a ssg20, but if there's no vdsl module to the ssg20 then I'll have the ssg5 (I can find both here for about 40 usd)
wanna get such a bandwith at home too
but 100Mbit/s ist the fastest available
in the next town i could get 10GBit/s
currently im at 50Mbit/s but i will be moving soon
so either i will end up with 150 or 500Mbit/s
Is is possible to get 10Gbit/s over om3 optical fiber connected to spf ports?
Anything's possible if you're willing to pay. You tell the provider what kind of handoff you expect
Yes, om3 is possible
because the sfp copper wires are too short
and rj45 10Gbe switch implimentaions are expensive
@waxen scroll @clear igloo hello
@clear igloo we're switching to aruba
Why...
Lol
๐
Well, they were talking about it for a while now.
Oh
It seems to have followed a similar pattern to Google Fiber
Tons of hype and talk but in this case nothing got off the ground
Yeah
Google fiber just kind of died a year or two in which sucks
Well they aren't expanding I guess is a better way to put it
There are people who have Google Fiber
Yah, they aren't killing it but it's just stopped expanding
yup
I'm in the car
shouldn't you be in school?
Never
Get some learnding in
Learnding?
@elfin gust yeah thats mine. Currently i am not using it. This model doesnt have gigabit interfaces (i see that the ssg5 doesnt either). I dont know if they sell it with the vdsl module or if it exist but you have to buy it separately.
@clear igloo @waxen scroll Hmmmm there's another router on this network with 10.0.0.254..... people say it's part of Xfinitywifi...... wtf comcrap
My grandmother doesn't have her own router
You can turn Xfinity wifi off I believe
HOW
If it's not an option in the router, you can do support chat and ask them to turn it off
@subtle glen I knew I would've to buy it separately, I wasn't sure if it exists, I can only find for the Jnp SRX 200 series... Thanks! ๐
It's enough for me
๐
I only need it for firewall/router/modem settings, anything else will be handled by a gigabit switch.
i think this one has the vdsl plug
๐
tell me how it goes
V.92 is dial up
On my next house there's no adsl available, its only radio signal, vdsl or fiber (expensive)
Since I'm living nicely with 50mbps I think that 100mbps will be more than enough if available... ๐
where?
the one in the picture
the adsl B module
cause the one i have is a ADSL A module with the rj11 one
I think its RJ45, this is very strange. lol
๐ค
rj45
POTS is over landlines, I heard about isdn before but never searched for it
@subtle glen then you should try BNC connections
@rocky badge whats the purpose of a vlan
Am I correct?
Do I win a prize?

job interview failed
Wot, that was a job interview?
so you figured out what vlans were made for?
Nope
you were close with that comment
no, it can be reduced with vlans
if you have 500 computers, a broadcast is sent to all
if you split the 500 in vlans, the broadcast in one vlan is limited

Yes? I think you can but why would you...
what if i told you that you made a /24 and need to expand to /23
in the corp world you need to transition things and not do them at once
its not a house where you kick 5 devices and done

so how do i add a second address to my cisco?
but then you're not ๐ค
I don't know much about Cisco
i thought you were training for ccna or something
Not me....
lol @ using Intel's line against them
Yeah...
does anyone know of any incredibly cheap pci wired network adapters
I mean, you can probably throw a stone at Amazon and hit a dozen 100Mb PCI cards that will work
They were all $10 and up so I was wondering if anyone knew anything cheaper, but thanks anyways
throws shade like AMD
@quartz bramble i have a bunch; i could send you one if you are really stuck
@clear igloo @waxen scroll hello
you can do lots of stuff with vlans
isp's usually use vlans to separate the services they sell

voice in a vlan, internet in other vlan and tv on other
that way they can secure the bandwith the services need on the same link
Hmmmmmm
on the first days of dsl and voice over ip
sometimes a phonecall would cut the internet
cuz isp werent using vlans
novadays the best practice have grown to use vlans to separate services and to organize networks better, it has reached a point that hardware decisions are affected highly on how the vlans are layed on the design of the networks.
huh?
with dsl, voice is not sent via IP
at least in the "early" days
they used different frequency bands over the same cable, iirc
@thick minnow https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Digital_subscriber_line
Digital subscriber line (DSL; originally digital subscriber loop) is a family of technologies that are used to transmit digital data over telephone lines. In telecommunications marketing, the term DSL is widely understood to mean asymmetric digital subscriber line (ADSL), the...
Again, perhaps some actual knowledge before demonstrating ignorance
what are you talking about?
read my what i wrote then what you wrote
we are saying the same thing with different angles
....
a phonecall would cut the internet but was NOT IP based and a vlan would not have helped.
How is anything you wrote about DSL and phone service and vlans correct?
voip
voip had nothing to do with DSL
yes, DSL has piss-poor uplink bandwidth, so yeah, that caused some problems, but nothing that vlans could have fixed
maybe QOS, but that would /still/ impact your internet experience since it was the bandwidth that was constrained, not some rogue IP packet from your VOIP solution smacking into your internet traffic
i was not talking about the 'age' when they where dividing the phone service from the internet service in dsl with just one of those noise filters
talking about when the phone service came with the dsl service int he same freq
as you seem to know old phone service and dsl service work on a diferent freq
like it does now (I am using such a service), and I can tell you it ain't vlans doing the magic of keeping the VOIP working correctly
there is QOS on modern VOIP/internet modems (I happen to be on a cable modem)
not now, phone service now uses not even the 1% of todays bandwiths
a phone call TODAY
do nothing
yes vlans keep the traffic separate for management and security reasons
i dont know whats your point other than to arguee
Ok, I misunderstood, you are right
ive setup voip commutators for call centers down here. i know what is up with vlans
Although, I wasn't aware that vlans are required for QOS, since I have done tons of QOS on networks without vlans. Maybe makes it easier
every vendor has its version of qos
and back in the time some did not even had any
all you can do is play with the modulation and cut the bandwith and do some magic
Hi everyone, I'm searching some kind of document management software (enterprise kind of stuff, where you scan your paper document, it goes through some OCR, then it's sorted by document type (bill, administrative document, ...) so you can find them faster than digging through piles of paper).
Do anyone know/uses/have used/have installed this kind of software ? (I'm searching for Open source/free software, it's for home use, even if some paid-software names could be useful to search for alternatives ^^)
If that could help, I can send scan jobs from my scanner, it outputs the file in a folder which could be scanned from the software (so if you know some kind of software that grabs PDF files from a network folder/FTP to throw it to some kind of document management software, that could help me)
And, because I'm the kind of guy which always asks for the most precise thing in the universe, I want it to be able to run on Linux (Debian based distro, or at least in a Docker container).
Thanks in advance to anyone that can help me!
Hmmm
Yay, blob is back
Hai LZdanger
Ooh
@rocky badge proper lab equipment!
Lol
@waxen scroll I'd raise you a Catalyst 5000 series, but that would be silly.
Ayymd
@waxen scroll Catalyst 9400, nice
Lol
Got confused for a second ๐
@clear igloo I got more bad news
HPe EWWW caps caps
Gotta keep all sides on their toes ๐
Some switches at school are ProCurve switches
L2 or L2/L3 switches?

Coal was cool
So was HPe
ouch ;-;
Skype was cool, so was coal
The fact is @rocky badge nobody needs all those features. A white box does just as good for less than half the cost of cisco
๐
dies
Nobody needs security, just permit ip any any is all you need ๐
shutdown ports each day after hours
Best security is to deny ip any any and shutdown all ports, nobody needs that newfangled "internet"
Heck, just kill the power to that SEEE PEEE EWWW
internet is gay anyway
Yah, that's easy. Part of how DHCP works
Wow....
thats amazing
All servers that get a request respond, first to respond gives out the IP but the others still answer too
why doesnt this thing have gigabit ethernet ports ๐
i could use it between the switch and the modem so it acts as a firewall but all the pc's get gigabit connection between eachother
not having gigabit
@clear igloo at what price IRL for personal things do you start to go "huh. this is expensive" ?
Depends on the thing
thats the right answer, lets focus on tech
Like if someone said "Here's a $500 automatic air vent" I would call that stupid expensive
But if someone gave me a Nexus 93180 or something for $500 that would be super awesome ๐
Lol
oh @subtle glen means firewall not router i think
GG
yes, throughput is how they get you
๐
U wot now
fite me m8
fite begins

@rocky badge one time, at an old job, a senior security person TERRIBLE at their job had 2x ASA w/ firepower module installed
they ran all DC traffic through it
and they turned on EVERY. FEATURE.
XD
Lol
Was it at least a 5585-X?
i dont remember, i think it was less
How much useless boring facts do you know about Cisco... @clear igloo
Do you know where the logo comes from @rocky badge
but we had mystery "network blips" and it took us MONTHS to narrow it down to the firepower (the engineer quit before this)
Golden Gate Bridge ๐
Really?
the internal network link in hardware between ASA and FP had drops
lol, for a DC that's not surprising the internal link couldn't handle it
Lol
hey @rocky badge if my internet is provided over the MPLS and I want to add an internet circuit to my router, what do i need to do?
Call a plumber
@waxen scroll wait what
@rocky badge what should i consider in a hybrid routing situation
What
@hollow helm do the LMG staff ever talk here? i must be missing it all
"here" as in anywhere here
Jake does now and then.
Luke and Linus have popped their heads in once or twice but not all that often
sad. ๐ฆ
well yeah, thats a beta product
i guess i wouldnt want to be on works chat either after hours
๐
๐
Hey guys! Just wanted to say that I've just managed to get Nextcloud up and running on my laptop, and I'm happy to help anyone else set it up on their server if they want it! Super easy to install and set up port forwarding (it took me a couple days to figure out why I couldnt access it using my subdomain but I figured out that I'd used the wrong boxes for the ports...) and dyndns so I highly recommend giving it a shot! Maybe it's even something someone at LMG could go through in a video? That'd be cool.
ik literally everyone else here is a nerd and is more than likely capable of setting up a home webserver with https but if you want any pointers on getting it set up, just hook me up.
Better yet, put a 1RU server in a DC ๐
@wooden osprey savage.
@waxen scroll @clear igloo hello
This is LZ with networks, have you logged an incident with the service desk?
No
Sorry sir, this is level 3 support... you need to call level 1
๐
i dont miss support. now it has to be pretty bad before i hear about it

and when i cant fix it, i send it to a @clear igloo at cisco
then some how the QoS SME for cisco jumps on a plane and meets me
@clear igloo yep. i met the guy, he even wrote the book for cisco
xD

The first edition of this book established itself as the definitive guide to successfully deploying and managing QoS with Cisco technologies. Now, the authors have thoroughly revamped their authoritative guide to reflect radically new applications, best practices, hardware, s...

Hello everyone
Hello
does anyone here recomend the Netgear FVS318G for a small network, home stuff..
?
I know its in the VPNFilter hacked list
it's discontinued, but besides this theres another major issue with it?
@waxen scroll should I run ESXi, make a Windows Server... Then use a machine to RDP into that VM for parent access? because my parents need a computer ๐
xD
It's the MS Imagine version of Win Server... so I can't use it in production anyways ยฏ_(ใ)_/ยฏ
if they need a computer how does RDP help? you need a computer to RDP into another
Yeah, I have a low powered machine that could do that
VM desktops kind of suck IMO but it could work
I don't have unRAID licenses
hm...
you can also install linux, vbox, +windows on those vm's, and attache everything + autostart, ik it would be kind of trouble but could work...
the time you see me using unRAID is the time i get a free license
I already have ESXi licenses I'm not using ยฏ_(ใ)_/ยฏ
@ashen lily
thats a bloody trial
Exactly xD
not a free license.
lol, I know, but it's free
30 days wouldn't last me xD
๐
xD
@rocky badge ik, i was jk with @ashen lily
I bought a 18U server rack
on ebay for $100
found out its too small
and now im cutting out the sheet metal so all my servers will fit
LOL
And I also have VMware Workstation Pro https://linusdrop.tips/?i=35e00249.png
I don't have any VMs on my laptop
that's awesome
Can ya like not tag me twice in a row.
nice domain
sorry
anything can
Oh, that's a nice laptop
I prefer macbooks, currently own a 2017 Macbook Pro w/ touchbar
I want a MacBook Pro xD
just because they work good with the apple ecosystem
and they're good laptops, like they are meant to be portable
hotspot w/ my phone if i need to take it with me, etc.
Nice
imgur
I plan on moving it out of my corsair case to my rosewell 4U server case
with EKWB watercooling
so that's going to be fun
lol
thankfully it's a small case, so it's a small res to hold the EKWB Cryptofuel
Copying a Windows ISO to a folder for NTlite
with the thunderbolt 3 dock
so i can move the rack to the otherside of my bedroom
and use a 6ft thunderbolt 3 cable
you think thunderbolt can handle two 35" display at 200hz? 2560x1080?
this is thunderbolt 3 btw?
I'll be getting a pic-e card to use it
I think so?
lets hope
xD
nice
yeah
I have a Dell UP3017
That's pretty
I bet the colors on that are awesome
Yee
I can't do one monitor
I have another monitor, aka my laptop display. But I don't use it
I had 6 monitors, now I'm down to two curved
wooo
@loud lance first one is me and my friend's business, second one is school, third one is my personal one. https://linusdrop.tips/?i=6832eac8.png
ah
I rarely use outlook
I'm a gmail dude.
rather spend $5/mo on a GSuite then outlook ๐
I have a small question, probably off topic
I'm a 14 year old student that's currently doing some freelance sysadmin work
Would it be worthwhile to go for my CCNA now, or should I wait a few years?
I'm 14 and I think I might do it later ยฏ_(ใ)_/ยฏ
It may be helpful to find more jobs/projects. Just find a way to not pay for it. Like subventions or helping funds from states for young citizens.
Yeah, a company I subcontract offers free certifications of any type
Then go for it
I'm fairly certain I'd be able to pass it
*Insert "Free real estate" meme*
Any study materials to recommend?
And also, @loud lance if you're considering gsuite, I highly recommend it
I would think you want to get the course material books
I have Office 365 ๐ , well it comes with Visio, but it's still Office.
I run it for both personal and a company I manage gsuite for; the way it works is amazing
Takes a bit to memorize where everything is, but once you do, it's very powerful
+1
I also got a Gsuite account for a personal project, it works great.
I use gsuite for my @unreliable.site and @unreliable.host domains
Nothing but good things to say
Well, there is one
I have Azure and Office 365 on ryois.me and bitbytebit.us
Those domains names ^^

I used to be huge on CLI-only KVM management
Got a Dedicated server running ESXI 6.5
My personal test bench consists of 6 nodes in 3 different countries
And a small little pfSense box so I can familiarize myself with pfSense
I was going to buy to own an r210, but ended up getting scammed on it
Is that a vive I see?
Yea
I've been wanting one, but I tested it and it never fully caught my appeal
Was waiting for the pro but that flopped to in my opinion
Mine?
Ok
@high anchor @waxen scroll reeeee, ESXi won't detect my nic
Can you explain ? The Hypervisor itself ? Or just VMs ?
No

they have free stuff
the learning courve is a bit steep
but they have pretty cool stuff
QEMU oof
xD
lol nice
Now to get some new CPUs >.>
What CPUs?
hi @clear igloo time to share
errrr MUH GAWD... editing /etc/hosts on edgerouter and restarting dnsmasq service works for overriding DNS requests from hosts
Use phone activation @rocky badge
No thanks
I'll just use a different key ๐
lol
they have digital activation over phone now
which is dumb as shit because you have to call still
they'll text you a link and you click it
then you enter all the #s
XD
yup
i dont know why they cant send me to the activation page from the OS
the OS knows the damn numbers too... fill it in for me
No, I can't paste into a command prompt from my clipboard
@clear igloo https://linusdrop.tips/?i=d77dfdcc.png
reeee
lol
Typed it in with dashes https://linusdrop.tips/?i=00416316.png
And it has to be on a non-core edition
There's no sysadmin ๐
have the mods do the needful
XD

@rocky badge
I'm buying all this for 1,150
one od the MD3000's were sold, and the terrastation
has rails on the r710, etc.
Oooh
good deal?
Awesome
I needed a new rack, and more servers.
I'll upgrade all the systems to 128GB of ram in the 710s
o.0
Lol
I run a lot of ESXi vms
I plan to have around 12TB in total on the MD3000i
I'll be configuring the drives for the R710 in ssds too.
for core vms
like pfsense, etc.
im looking for a new ethernet cable for my pc which one do you think would be the best?
cat 6?
cat 7?
okay thanks
you dont need cat 7a
no isp is giving you 10gbit speeds, unless you want to pay like 5k a month for a bakcbone connection
you don't need cat 7a
you don't need an opinion
Futureproofing and shielded wire is never a bad idea. If we'd have futureproofed the last decade instead of sitting on our hands, we'd be in a much better place technically.
yea but that would require using logic and who does that
Crazy people.
@thick minnow lol in switzerland in some towns you get 10GBit/s for 50bucks
Oh wow, 7a does exist. Interesting. I feel like a pleb for using CAT6 now when wiring my house.
Oh, there's even CAT8 now. Wow, that is some expensive stuff.
Can you ppl stop lying about stuff, 'futureproofing' a house with carrier/datacenter stuff LMAO
cat7 is dumb,
fiber is cheaper
There is no such thing as "futureproof".
Its just about making it longer until next upgrade...
Or just have a reason to spend more money...
no home today needs more than 200 mbit connection , and that alot
with 200mbit you will be fine for the next decade
willing to say for the next 2 decades
i dont see 8k skype calls becoming popular anytime soon
640K is enough for everyone, nobody needs more than X for Y time because Z doesn't exist
I'd argue something different than just internet exchange traffic
Maybe the reason Z doesn't exist is because of people who think that X is good enough
They prevent Z from coming into existence on a mainstream level
Yah, if that was more widespread who knows what we might have
And then people would be looking at 40Gbit or 100Gbit and saying we don't need that because another "Z" doesn't exist ๐
Exactly xD
"Mom got stuck in the teleporter again due to your 32K streaming Billy!"
@ancient vigil, what are those graphs?
total world wide internet use?
how did that info got recollected?
was the spread of tech that uses internet added into the graph?
...
i work in a isp
this is silly
the only reason you would need 200 mbit connection in your home would be for braging in this discord server
if you are a father and your family are 3 kids that are twitch streamers and they are streaming at 1080p 60fps then okay meaby you will be stretching your 200mbit connection when you and your wife are watching diferent 4k media.
...
packet loss has nothing to do with bandwith
it doesnt happen
the only reason theres packet loss is because theres a bad link
i know what i am talking about
routers queue packets
if theres'' saturation''
nothing gets lost
unless the link is bad
i do this for work
queues are done in relation to the selected modulation of the link
Queuing is done on a per port level and once the queue fills up any packets that aren't queued as high priority are dropped until there is more space in the queue
talking about the router on your home not your computer
private ip networks work diferent
nope thats not how it workd tho
but good try
No, they don't, queuing is the same, the amount of buffer might differ but the mechanics work the same regardless of if it's some crap router from 2010 or some beefy 100GbE router in an ISP
Once the link and buffer are filled up, packets get dropped
Saying that packet loss only exists due to a bad link is incorrect
we were talking about bandwith needs
well i was talking about bandwith needs to a person that wants all the bandwith in the world
thats my problem
...
So you're problem is the backbone on the ISP not being able to handle the traffic demands of the person
the backbone of the internet have nodes
everywhere in the world
where ever those nodes are
close by, there are sweet deals
usually datacenters get close on the nodes
you know what britate a 4k uses?
Depends on compression
...
look
call it what you want
what ever with moeny can be done
but you dont need more than 200mbit
dude i need a petabyte
lmao
is like i dont like my voip droping packages waiting for my 40 games i downloaded in a milisecond
while i watch 4k porn in 5 screens
LIVE
uncompresed
cuz i roll ike that
you know what i am wrong
you are right
the 4k porn in 5 screens convinced me
200mbit connections are soo arcaic
you are that guy that everybody loves cuz has the fastest internet
you just want all the bandwith aviable
you want it now
thats ludacris
i will say 200mbit is enough for these 2 decades to come
Almost Gbit on phones and still waiting for 500/500 at my house lmao
Yes
And no there aint no fiber line near my house
Cause if i could i would allready have it ๐
Oof
KPN ur site is broken i am getting 200/20 atm https://bluecrazii.nl/images/jd43X01H3.png
okay but that 1.4 gbit will be shared
Like what out of who's ass did they have to pull that number
4g is 500mbit
you would have that if only you are conected to the tower
well 500mbit is the top speed on 4g right now
4G speed depends on the band and tech used
lol
anyway
5g is not coming anytime soon
they needt o legislate the bands worldwide to open up space
Another year it will be, trials are under way
the technology exists to do al this
the problem is the frequencies they want to use
the problem i see is that they want to use the mid bands
the receptionw ill be shity inside homes and buildings
one way to fix that is to turn up the power on the radios
which goes against many laws
Except corporations ๐
^
i wonder when people will start to die over the high power radio emitions
the low bands are all taken by military and space agencies
soo thats the ideal range
cuz those freqs go through buildings real ez
thats where 4g moslty works on
the problem is not your phone
the problem is the tower with the antena
that is showering everybody
and have sex with it?
youa re the one wanting to hug antenas
i mean next step is sex
just saying
yea the radios with their sectorial antenas will have to be more powerfull to be able to make the radio frequencies in the mid band penetrate buildings
making it unsafe
what
no it doesnt work like that
all you need is one side to be able to listen
if your hears the tower thats it
tower can hear the phone
look
is comon practice to have diferent antenas in wireles links
sometimes one size didnt make it for the link so they changed one in one side
and that fixed it
yes
....l
if your phone isnt powerfull enough to transmit back isnt powerfull enough to listen to the tower in the first place
no link was established ever
thats not how it works
if your phone cant talk to the radio tower therse no conection
if the tower cant listen to your phone theres no connection
there are laws prohibiting changes in the power of the transmision in phones
its all in the tower
the 5g original dream of using mid to high bands frequencies is illegal, if they are going down the mimo route to give more speed and still call it 5g to save face and charge more money dont spect anythig more than 20% to 30% increase on the speed you have right now.
and this will means you have to get a phone with the 4x4 mimo
if you live in a city and you get 20 to 40, probably you will get 25 to 50
not gbit speeds what so ever, unless they manage to clear the low band freqs
then meaby
good luck with that
each coutry has a diferent spectrum
@clear igloo @waxen scroll hello
yo
yes, silly blob
you probably need to get that looked at

unifi or edgemax?
Uh, I don't know ubiquiti stuff well
i love their product designs though
I hear its really good
So unifi
yeah]
explain what the cloud key does
cant i just use openvpn to connect to it
instead of buying a cloudkey
It controls all of the unifi products
Yeah, but I could run a local OpenVPN vm.
The cloudkey will discover and adopt the switches, APs, etc
whats another 1k on upgrading to ubiquiti gear
O_O
so my current router and modem
is built into my cable box
and only has two lan ports
Set that to bridge mode
Alright
but would that effect cable in any way?
well my cable is over IP
like coax is for the internet
and all the cable is over IP
It shouldn't
cause I run WideOpenWest
Alright.
here let me send you a pic

of my router
ok
here you go

Energy isn't cheap which is why i get this rack
I'll be running two dell UPS which I'm getting with all that gear
here's what I'm getting for 1,150. I might talk him down a bit more when I go the day to buy it next week.
cause he was quick to accept that offer
which makes me think I'll be able to get away with everything thats not listed SOLD for about 1k
I'll offer him 980 in cash
the R710's are pretty, and the UPS. so is the MD3000i.
I got 8TB to add to to the 3000i so I'll have a total of 11.3TB of total storage
and two SFP cards with cables.
but here's the question blob
should I put 3 cards in the MD3000i and connect the SFP cables from the server to the powerconnect switch
or should I connect it directly to one of the R710s
would ESXi be able to saturate the 4 gig connections from the R710 to the switch?
oof SFP, not SFP+?

ftw!
