are they worth the money?
if you get one with dedicated backhaul yes.
What that means is it has a dedicated channel to communicate with each mesh router
you are currently speaking words that I don't know the meaning of
Basically in short it means it meshes together better
Do you have any TV outlets in your house? That’s the first thing I would check
Yeah I do
You can run Ethernet over those with a tech called MoCA
yes
Yes. Lookup MoCA adapters
It has a little bit of wiring involved but nothing complicated even for a beginner
you’re just connecting all the tv cables together wherever they meet
Mesh is easier than MoCA but it also doesn’t perform as well
you might've made my week
Haha. I learned about MoCA adapters about a year ago and was pleasantly surprised a lot of people can run Ethernet over those lol
you need to find where all the cables behind the faceplate on the wall meet though
If you’re in the US - it is likely on the Internet Provider’s boxes on the side of your house
should be by your electric meter
(Don’t worry, coax cable is all low voltage — you can’t get shocked easily)
So, if im reading correctly i would need 2?
Yes, one to plug into the router and one into your pc
and you just connect them to the coaxial outlets on the wall
would that be like where the "main" tv is? like the living room
no. Usually it’s outside
so i need to put one outside?
No.
You just have to connect the cables together outside
Where they meet
What country are you in?
Canada
Alright yeah. Go by your electric meter outside when you have a chance and see if you see any boxes on the house
they should say an ISPs name
ISP = Internet Service Provider
Yeah
I have to go in a minute or two so I’ll get back to you later, just @ me
no problem
on my phone the download speed is 250mbs but on my pc its 7mbs help please
Sounds like you should upgrade your WiFi card
switch cables?
Go to Network and Sharing center
now what
Double click Ethernet and show me what’s there
okay now what
Send a screenshot
scroll down and send another screenshot of the other options
how
What’s under that tab
No no no the Speed & Duplex
how do i open that tab
Press it
i am
Double click?
i am
It should just open
idk
Send a screenshot again
okay ty
Let me know if that fixes it
What are you downloading from?
wdym?
like where are you downloading the files from where you are seeing the 7.35 mbs
yeah ofc
idk but i have one of em
See if you can find the router / modem model number
okay
is there a different name for it or sum
cuz i cant find it at the back
idk if its S/N or MAC
@meager ginkgo So I came home and I found out that im currently not on fiber (was my old router) and my current router is connected to the coax
It will still work. Do you have any satellite tv service such as directv?
that’s the only time it won’t.
Send me a picture of where all of the coax cables are and I can tell you what to hook up to what and if you need to buy anything in addition to MoCA Adapters
Alright hold up
white box with yellow câble is router
first wall plug is coax
I’m talking about all the coax cables in your house/walls
like I said earlier it will probably be outside
well you see i jsut tried over there and it seems to be locked
since i live in a condo
Ah you can't use this then
my bad.
I should have clarified.
But I must ask
Could I not simply plug a MoCA on my coax and connect it to my router ^
it wouldn't work?
There's a very slim chance that all the coax cables in your condo are actually hooked together
wouldn't all the one where I live connected to eachother?
likely not.
wait that's an xb7
i forgot helix rebrands comcast stuff lmao
it's very possible they are in each unit. but the problem is that the only way to know is to get an expensive rf/coax tester, or just buy the moca stuff and try it
either way if it's not connected you're kinda out of luck unless you buy the moca ones from somewhere with a really good return policy
or ask building management whether your coax outlets in the unit are connected or go back to a central distribution panel or something
anyone worked with the new Hitron Coda DOCSIS 3.1 modem? Cox is able to lease 1 IP to the modem, but the modem has 2 ports and i'm trying to use both, but their tech support is useless in understanding what i'm requesting.
The issue - both ports work, but its one or the other. I have 1 connected to the router, and 1 connected to the PS5 (super short throw, wont reach the router). The router gets the IP, the PS5 doesn't get anything. Any suggestions?
How much RAM do i need for a proxmox server with NAS, PLEX, VPN, and maybe web server?
are you asking for two separate public IPs on two different ports? or are you asking them to give you the same IP on both ports? because the first is expensive and probably not what you actually want. and the second isn't possible for a modem by itself
in any case, no offense but their tech support is correct to be confused because it sounds like you're asking them for something that doesn't make sense
multiple IPs is usually only available on a business plan if at all
I’ve heard bad things about Hitron.
i asked for 2 ips, they were clueless
right because you can't get multiple IPs on one cable modem
you'd need a business plan and totally different hardware
if they even offer that
It's less a limitation of the hardware and more to do with their provisioning. "Business tier" modems may have better hardware in some cases, but it's really down to their firmware and additional features which may come with licensing cost
i mean, yeah the hardware physically could. but it's extremely unlikely they'd have firmware for that for your consumer modem
especially if it's COAM hardware
chances are the firmware only supports using the two ports for link aggregation, if that
If the modem is bridged, the only limitations are down to configured policies rather than firmware or hardware
When it comes to business connection and static IPs/blocks, the main difference is most COAX focused SP are incorporating routing behind the scenes in the modem
configuration/provisioning/firmware, user can't control any of them on a basic consumer modem
i think the point is that what PAT is trying to do really isn't possible with the current setup
Im not disagreeing on that, Im just saying that it's not just a hardware only issue.
yeah fair enough
It's not possible because it's pretty common practice to not permit more than a single IP to residential or even business DHCP customers. Too much risk of depleting valuable IP space
Also that additional port is mainly down to manufacturing and mass produced hardware. I highly doubt it support any type of LAG. And when an ONT/modem is configured for bridged mode, all but one interface is typically not bound to any bridge. If so, the SP puts it's own network at risk due to BC storms.
In the SP world, not all loop protection mechanisms that are common place in enterprise are available
Hey guys, quick question. Which is better to pursue, Network + or CCNA?
Or are they basically the same?
Depends what is your goal behind pursuing it
Honestly, I just want to learn about networking stuff and get a nice job in that area where I can tinker with routers, switches, protocols and all that. So I was recommended those two pathways.
I may not go to like a CCNP for my personal endeavours if I don't feel like it
imo unless you're already in the field, I'd suggest you start with CompTIA certs. Then once you get some basic experience, then work on CCNA to get promotion, different position etc.
Other best way to gain knowledge is to just buy used hardware from ebay and practice at home
Alright, thanks. Think I'll try that
i thiiiink that particular one does advertise something along those lines. not sure how they expect most people to set it up but iirc there are a few consumer modems that say aggregation up to 2Gbps (rather than just a 2.5GbE port for whatever reason)
but the harder part is probably finding a consumer router that can do it software wise
Most prosumer hardware supports it but on the consumer side, there is very little reasoning to put time into implementing it
Gigabit switches are cheaper and link aggregation is usually a free feature on managed switch chips
If you're looking into getting into the networking field, CompTIA certs are essentially ignored, especially in regards to Net+. It's all high level theory and zero hands on.
I would suggest going the CCNA route because not only will you get more in depth theory, the material allows you to lab during your studies as it walks you through basic configuration. And seeing how the tests are around the same cost and the plethora of freely available CCNA material, don't waste your time with Net+
Both contain a fair bit of junk, but from what I've heard from those taking it CompTIA certs contain more junk
I've been told CCNA no longer contains serial interface configuration though.
It's not hard to do, but with how prevalent it was in the content I did you'd assume it was standard in every enterprise
CCNA content was still helpful to me for networking knowledge in ways I know a Net+ wouldn't have been
Yeah thats gone with the refresh. I got my CCNP just prior to the refresh and I had to know frame-relay which has been dead for years.
The CCNA is still solid for people looking to get into the field. Sure its a vendor cert, but there is enough theory and structure to get most people started.
There's a reason there's so many CCNA's out there
Got a team (tech) lead from my fiber ISP coming out tmrw, my speeds to their servers are gig up and down, but speeds outside ie Comcast, cloudflare, and other local fiber providers are all not even within margin of error. No issues with latency to the other servers. Comcast I get 500 down 300 up on a good day, cloudflare Speedtest I get 650 down 80 up. Does anybody know a potential cause for this issue? I've had field techs verify everything on my side is working as intended.
yeah i mean that is starting to sound like some kind of weird peering issue but you'd think they would have planned for that
ok ummm. i was thinking of replacing the POE adapter with a tplink deco to go along with my router. is it possible for tplink's onemesh system to work via ethernet or do i have to use it wirelessly?
I run deco m5s in a hybrid config
you can use a mix of both wireless and wired backbone
although the m5 only has like 1300mbps on 5ghz to split among the clients
eh my router does 1200mbps
which is enough for my VR bs
i just want to have a seemless connection to the back of the house
while also improving the speed bc the max download there is 100 when we're getting 250-270
so onemesh should still work even if i connect the deco to my ax20 via ethernet
The unfortunate reality is an ISP can't guarantee speeds outside their network. Would agree with Andrew that it's probably some sort of peering issue between your provider and others. Could be any number of things concerning the path between your ISP and the others. You could maybe get somebody at the ISP to see if there's an actual issue, or if it's just how the path/peering is set up. But good luck getting somebody at that level to investigate a single residential customer complaint.
bc im reading elsewhere how one mesh doesnt work via wired backhaul
aside from deco, which im gonna assume it should work with my router
My isp guarantees a 70 up 50 down connection did i get scammed
Are you using your own router or the ISP router?
the isp one
And are you on WiFi or Ethernet
ethernet cat6a
have you tried a different computer?
cable comes in in a ADSL box i payed for super fiber
yes
Yeah I’d say you got scammed then.
curse you EE super fiber
I think it's something to do with their routing company zayo tbh
EE Fibre Broadband - Powered by BT
Full Fibre Max gives you mind-blowing speeds of up to 900 Mb/s lol i payed for this
actually how good is the penetration on that
you mean how good is the reception?
i have 3 units, one on each end of the house, and one upstairs
they barely cover it
i mean like wall penetration
@hollow marlin @clear igloo I hope ITS isn't like "why tf is this access port doing 3TB in a day"
hehe
i got like gyprock walls and the poe extenders i got barely reach the backyard i think idr
never use the extenders
I wonder what the port stats look like on the AV switch stack
Crestron DM NVX is IP based AV and requires a Gigabit connection to each endpoint because they can use upwards of 700Mbps consistently
And they're on 24/7
So I wonder how much port usage each of those have hahaha
there's 2 48 port switches in a switch stack and there's a ton of drops to devices and such
If these results are just based on various speed test, I wouldn't put much effort into worrying about it. As long as the SP eliminates congestion/errors, not much can be or even troubleshot on 3rd party services external to their network.
And for reference, running Cloudflare's speedtest which goes over our 20gbps direct peering with them, I am only able to pull results in the range of 630/140mbps. Running speedtest.net to Comcast over another peering, I can't break 300/200mbps.
of flows, latency, current load at the host, etc. all play a huge role.
Just realised this is better suited in networking
talked to the tech, he said im not alone in this issue but it IS outside of their control as its a routing issue, someones router in a datacenter along the line is not working properly
hes gonna have to get in contact with upper management to address the issue
I'd be curious to know how they came to the conclusion.
i think its an issue with Zayo datacenters
as people who do not traffic through zayo do not have this issue
Sounds on par
not in their control, but an issue that will cause them issues if not addressed LOL
Well Zayo is pretty well known for oversubscribing. But I'd still be curious what testing methodology they used to say X router is the culprit.
yea ill have to wait to hear back from them
You said you did a test with speed.cloudflare.com right?
If you are able to do a consistent trace to speed.cloudflare.com (MTR, PingPlotter), I'd be interested in the result. With the first initial hops omitted of course
took my pc at the fiber location where im experiencing the issue to install some things, so ill do it when i put it back
For the cost, and upgrading my wifi network from "wifi5" to "wifi6" is the nighthawk RAX30 a good buy?
I mean if you have devices that even support wifi 5. Let alone 6
Most devices these days support wifi 5, it's been out for over 8 years at this point
Do you have devices that would benefit or see yourself getting devices that would be able to benefit from the upgrade?
True, nothing I have is wifi6, except my main PC
then I'd hold off for now, wifi 6 by itself doesn't bring much of a speed improvement but does help lay the groundwork for 6E and eventually 7 on the 6GHz spectrum
Right, no need to over engineer for no reason, right now it's nest cameras, my Pc, phone, switch and 2 tvs, and all of that isn't running at the same time all the time
Yah, if you were on a router that only had WiFi 4 support with mostly WiFi 5 devices then I would recommend jumping to a WiFi 6 router just to last you a while but you should still be good for a while 🙂
More money to upgrade motherboard and hard drive space now
Yup 😄
need a little help my internet thinks im in a different location than i really am
it will go from Chicago to Denver CO
but i live in Mississippi
hi im starting to pull my hair out i have just got rust server going all working ports fowarded and i have checked i have been trying to connect it to a domain and im lost this is my SRV record is right im pointing it to a proxyed a record witch hasworked in the past with mine craft so im wondering what to do
Your question's a tad vague, but I'm going to go with "My GeoIP database location provided is wrong, how do I change it", to which the answer is here: https://www.maxmind.com/en/geoip-location-correction
Use this form to update the location associated with an IP or IP range. In some cases, we accept batch corrections if you have multiple corrections you would like to submit.
Before you do that, check if you're behind a CGNAT as it might just be your ISP's infra being somewhere else.
Do you have an A record for it?
it points the SRV to the a record
Does connecting via the A record and forwarded port work?
no
Well I'd look there before worrying about srv records
Does connecting to the IP and forwarded port work?
yes
Are you testing from outside your local network?
one of my friends conected to it
Keep in mind not everything support srv records
If the A record's not working they should resolve that
SRV is overkill unless you're running a lot of services that all expect the same port
then what record could i use
Use an A record.
At this time you've said it is not presently working, which suggests it's misconfigured
my a record just point to my public ip
i am using cloud flear witch proxys it
That won't work
Cloudflare proxy free only works for http(s)
Not raw tcp for games
Disable it
ohh is it the next tier plan
Well it requires cloudflare spectrum or whatever
Thier tunnel service, I believe it's per gb pricing
ohh there zero trust tunnles isnt that different
Yes
Anyway disable proxy
If you want ddos protection don't use cloudflare it's really expensive for games
what else could i use
Well first get it to work
But I heard that tcpshield and cosmic are good
You setup an srv on the same domain
It's not separate
same subdomain as the a record
tcp shield is for minecraft and cosmic is a tunneling service any other ones
No
it makes you install a app on the server
Yeah? The way it works is different I guess than just a simple reverse proxy
yeah
I've some issues with my download speeds with any other app BUT Steam, what could be? I should have around 50mb/s upload speeds but a game launcher is at 2.5mb/s
your isp might rate limit steam
I mean,Steam is good,I've reached around 80mb/s lol but any other app goes up to 32-ish or lower
ohh the opisit
Web browser download looks fine
I'm trying any other thing to check
Lets see Origin
then it could be some servers are closer than other depending where you live can afect it quite alot
Makes sense,Origin is at 69mb/s,nice
Jesus,15 minutes for Battlefield 1
Looks like all is good
Not quite but its above 2.5 mb now
68mb/s LETS GOOO
Problem fixed,idk what happened
what is a good way of get a Minecraft server up and running on my home network and being able to connect form outside of my network
First: What kind of internet do you have?
?
the one that uses phone line
VDSL
yes
Which telecom?
why dose that matter
Namely I'm trying to determine if your provider uses CGNAT
Determine it yourself if you prefer
dodo
I don't think Dodo uses CGNAT. (Which would make this a lot harder)
In that case you should be able to go into your router and create a port-forwarding rule once you've got your server set up.
First thing's probably to make sure the computer running the server has a static IP or reserved lease.
You can usually set up a reserved lease in your router's config page.
Enable the server on the computer (don't use the internal server built into the Minecraft, make it standalone by downloading and running the standalone server), and port-forward port 25565 from your router to your server's IP address you made static so it won't break later.
@hollow marlin do you know anything about call routing? Because I moved my sim to a used phone, which in the end didn't work and needed to return it (because no cellular functions worked), but then I moved my sim back and I can't make outbound calls. Receiving calls, both sending/receives sms, and data works, just not calls. When I try it sends me to a message "Your call could not be completed as dialed". I've been on chat with ATT for several days now and it's getting annoying, claiming it will work tonight, only to check back in the morning and it doesn't, then contacting them again and they say it work by the end of the week...
that's super weird, i wonder if the broken phone somehow physically damaged the sim??
hmm nah that doesn't make any sense if inbound calls and data still work
but maybe they need to just send you a fresh SIM if they can't undo whatever the bad phone did
Yeah, I'll try to get them to send a new one
It's weird because it seems to connect to att voice "servers" or whatever it's called
Anyone very good at troubleshooting niche scenarios? Currently working my way through pfSense and ISP router problems. Been troubleshooting for 8 hours.
Problem is I cant reach a service I'm hosting on the pfS router, which is connected to the ISP router's LAN ports. (I cannot just connect the ISP's modem to pfSense as PPPoE gives troubles and results in 0.0.0.0 as the interface IP)
I have messed around with both the ISP firewall, pfSense's firewall, both firewalls together, and routing rules for both the WAN1 interface and LAN interface.
My goal is to get HTTPS & HTTP traffic from the ISP router to go from10.1.0.1 (ISP router, ingress) to 10.0.0.180:7443. (nginx Proxy Manager running on docker, listening on port 7443)
Currently I have a set of rules on the router that say:
:443>10.0.0.180:7443
:80>10.0.0.180:7080
A rule on pfS that says:
WAN1:7443>10.0.0.180:7443
And even with all of that, or a * everywhere rule for allowing absolutely all traffic to everything on pfS (tested that for a while before returning to the more safe option of just the necessary rules) absolutely no traffic got to 10.0.0.180:7443, and Cloudflare showed only Errors 522 and 521.
Can I use USB tethering to share my 5G connection from my phone to my PC?
I have hotspot included in my plan with Cricket wireless, but its only 15 gigabytes a month.
And Cricket wouldn't count that against my mobile hotspot?
"Try it and see"
Ahhhh fuck. What do ya know. A multi million dollar company for saw someone trying that
Solution: be cleverer
Oh wait! Its working
Is that a /15 or bigger? Does the ISP router know how to route to your other network if not?
As far as I know, it's been able to route through the WAN1 as i get pings from Cloudflare to 10.0.0.x
Are you using NAT in pfsense?
Yes, i believe so
You need to set up a port-forward in pfsense, the network behind it isn't visible to your ISP router
I have set up a port forward for 10.0.0.180:7443
Shouldn't that rule be on the pfsense WAN interface, assuming that's facing the ISP router?
Probably not? I could set another on the WAN1 interface if that would help
I'm guessing at your interface names, but if you have a 10.1.0.X IP on pfsense's LAN that's definitely the wrong interface
Nope
10.1.0.X is ISP, 10.0.0.X is pfS
Ok, so which interface has a 10.1.0.X IP in pfsense?
ISP is connected directly to public, 10.0.0.X is LAN, connected to the isp ROUTER
I mean the ISP router is its own device. Its got one cable on its LAN connected to WAN1 on my pfsense router.
It goes to WAN1
Of course its not. Im trying to circumvent crappy PPPoE that I cant just carry over the login for
And WAN1 has what IP?
Ok, so you were just incorrect earlier
The rule needs to be on WAN1
Clear dest address
*?
Dest address will be pfsense WAN IP
And this will move :7443 traffic from 10.1.0.2 to 10.0.0.180?
Assuming that rule's on input and no other factors
Cloudflare gives 521
Connect physically to the ISP router and test connectivity from there
Your ISP router has 10.0.0.180 as the address to forward to? Need to be the PFsense router's WAN1 IP
if I switch my machines to the ISP router I can connect to my proxy no problem. Ive tested that before and had successfully gotten https rtaffic through
OK ill change that rq
Assuming it lacks routes past the pfsense router
If it's residential/you haven't done it, that is highly likely
Routing 7443 to 10.1.0.2 didnt fix it
You haven't isolated the issue
The cropping doesn't help me understand
Test directly to the IP from external, use 443
To which IP
Test from the internet, to the ISP router's IP
You didn't put 10.x.x.x into cloudflare, surely?
Hard to say, the terminology's inconsistent
What is the "private WAN IP"?
Nope. I got my public IP on Cloudflare, ive had this all working before I set up the pfsense router.
CGNAT maybe but they usually don't use that range because it's annoying
Especially a /8
Its a private /24 IP range before its NATted out to the ISP, which doesnt use CGNAT
They have two routers
You're seeing between two routers
I think Ill end up just going back to my ISP router. This is all too troublesome for the work I was tasked with- which im not even being paid for tbh
Longer explanation, Mum wanted me to set up a Dual-WAN router for the new office shes preparing. I chose to use my old PVE server for it with a network card. I tried setting up the PPPoE from my ISP router as 1:1 as I could get it and like Imentioned at the start that just got me 0.0.0.0 as an IP
I was connecting directly to the modem. Didnt work with the PPPoE user & pass & the router's MAC Addr
I think Ill leave it here and just revert to my previous state. This has been too much trouble due to a situation I have absolutely no control over. Thasnk you, fine lads/lassies
Anyone able to provide suggestions on network switches? Looking to add one to my home network. Will have a ISP with fiber 1g down / 1g up by early 2023 as well.
Running ifconfig isnt outputting "Link encap:"
Its just not there, instead i have "flags="
Any idea why?
Depends on you, a bit. What do you need the switch to do for you bar provide internet, and how many devices need to be plugged into it? Will you run any services locally that need high throughput or is it purely internet consumption?
I'd hate to suggest a Nexus 9516 (as funny as that would be) if you only need 4 more unmanaged gigabit ports to plug a few things in
Nah, you need a Cisco 8818 for 400/800GbE power 😛
But yes, gigabit switch is the best recommendation for what the OP needs for more ports
Gigabit or maybe a few multigigabit ports if they were a poweruser, based on the lack of detail probably unmanaged and just enough ports for their needs
Yup
Pretty much: buy whatever
"Anyone able to provide suggestions on network switches? Looking to add one to my home networkstate. Will have a ISP with fiber 1g down / 1g up by early 2023 as well."
One day I want to build a home lab 😂 a 8 port would probably get me buy for right now. However I was considering going larger to allow for additional devices to be added. As far as budget was hoping to stay $200 USD or lower, but can go above some if it meant having a option that’s far better.
Also for managed or unmanaged I’m honestly not sure. At one point I’m sure I would like to dive in and learn some basic things. I do plan on going after a network+ and security+ down the road if I stay in IT. My current employer will pay for it 😬
honestly don't waste your money - get a $20 8 port unmanaged switch and when you're ready to dive into learning more, you'll know exactly what you want to explore and you can better choose how to spend your money at that point
you'll always find a use for a spare 8 port gigabit switch even if you start building out a more complicated home lab down the line
I agree. The kinds of switches that you use for those kinds of certs don't make for nice home equipment anyways
I think these are pretty neat though - small and completely silent https://mikrotik.com/product/crs326_24g_2s_in
Its PoE cousin's not too shabby either, though it's twice the price (still comparatively cheap), twice the size and has fans
It gets wasteful on the power side of things if you scale it enough for a switch like that to do much though, just run a small desktop with a bit of RAM and a hypervisor
Hi, i tried connecting a second router to my house to have two different WiFi's to connect to but all that happened was the routers are now fighting over who sends a signal and i don't have internet anymore. I tried just unplugging the second router but now my main router does not want to provide an internet connection. How do I fix this?
I connected it through Ethernet port
The main modem router to the second router
@peak cloak
As of right now I'm just trying to get the main router to have an internet connection again
Hello, anyone has exprience outdoor 4G or 5G routers? i've got questions to ask 😄
hello, I have a cisco ucs-220 m3 server on which I use to host a minecraft network, however I end up being bot network attacked, we've sorted out the deny of entry from the bots, but the internet itself still appears to struggle (comes off as ddos at this point?), what could I possibly do to have the router itself instantly drop connections to the server that are not in specified by me countries?
the cisco system runs raspbian os, I've used IP tables to deny ip address access, however it still appears to make the internet choke out when i'm getting botted.
my goal is to drop connections which are not from specified by me countries without having to pay for enterprise level stuff.. I've checked the router's settings but there's no option to disallow such things, I can only block access to websites pretty much..
Think of it this way, you have one link, even if you drop the traffic that makes it down to you at the router level it still takes up the bandwidth of the link, unless you host it elsewhere with multiple links and more bandwidth than the ddos can toss at you there isn't much you can do as a home user
ohh, i think I get it
might have to replace the router with a bigger one for more ethernet ports
and use both ethernet ports on the cisco system?
if that is the case, i could do that, oh and the internet runs at 1gbps but idk if that is any much of a difference
also i do aim to (if possible even) grab some sorta extra device that'll allow me to filter the ip addresses that access the router itself and then goes further down the chain
No, I'm saying your bandwidth coming into your home is being saturated, unless you have more bandwidth than the attacker then you're going to be chocked out
right, I don't think its more so of the bandwith, the attack itself is around 5k IP's connecting to my internet, however idk if those connections by themselves carry any significant amount of bandwith
It's not internal bandwidth it's the bandwidth you get from your ISP, if that's filled with junk then you're out of luck, period
oh i see
You'd basically need a way to signal to your ISP you're being attacked and have them drop the traffic but unless you're an enterprise customer it's not going to happen. There are mechanisms ISPs can use to mitigate DDoS attacks from entering their network or coming from their network and impacting others but for most home customers unless it's service impacting for a lot of users they don't care much if at all
i need a good wifi router that has support for dlna server via usb, has at least 4 lan ports, is aprox 100$ cad, and that i can buy from canada computers in toronto. i honestly dont care abt to company
Oh sick there's some at my local one as well. I'll probably go with this one thanks!
Amazon probably is a better deal honestly
probably, but id prefer going to the store bc i need to return the router i bought a few days ago anyways
would it matter in which country I'm based in? or is that a general statement in such regard?
no that applies anywhere. if you're actually being DDoS'd with enough traffic to overwhelm your link to the ISP there's nothing you can do on your end
can't hurt to call the ISP and ask
If your ISP is Comcast. They dont care. At all. Even if you have a police report and an FBI case number.
@peak cloak Yeah I unfortunately have to deal with the PSTN side but I'm not familiar at all with the complexity of mobile providers.
Typically you'd see the opposite symptoms due to LNP lookups during a port. But when it comes to mobile carriers, it's all magic to me
There are TCP shielding services as well. No idea what the cost is though.
What's the exact error?
Timeout?
Nx domain ?
no error the pages just never load
In cmd can you ping 1.1.1.1
Waiting on the person to do this I am just a middle man for my friend
When Metronet comes tomorrow to install the fiber, could they install despite the fact spectrum hasn't removed their box on the side of the house?
I don't see why not
What are you looking for? By the way just ask for what you're looking for in future so you don't play multi-day games of (@)ping-pong
Otherwise people can't answer you and time is wasted
Is this very good for gaming?
If it's only you/low demand, it's good enough
I don't know why people ask these questions, it's entirely based on what internet use you have and need and nobody on the internet's opinion will change that
Gaming in general is not a high-bandwidth activity. Downloading games can be, but rarely the games themselves.
Real-world latency's going to depend on your proximity to the game server.
First-hop latency is important because it sets a minimum on what your latency can be.
Other things done on your internet connection at the same time may impact performance.
On an otherwise completely unused connection, once your connection's established you can often play just fine on well under a megabit per second, you're just not leaving much room for anything else.
Really was only wondering on the ms
i have a 2 ms ping and depending on the game it will go from 5-50 ms
which imo is pretty bad
Unless your game runs on speedtest.net's servers it's hard to say
Also latency tolerable is going to vary depending on what you're playing and how
Does anyone have any tips to diagnose inconsistent Wi-Fi speeds, assuming no overlapping channels and good signal strength? Sometimes I'll get 300-400meg on Wifi and other times 500. However I will always test 500 on wired. Have tried 20/40/80/160Mhz bands and each is consecutively faster but only sometimes will the higher bands reach the full 500. Setup is 5ghz AX, -50dbm signal strength. Anything I can do?
I'm lucky to get 15
It's wifi, it won't be 100% consistent since it depends on electrical interference, physical interference, etc
I would say 300-500 is pretty good
it also depends on neighbors and the surrounding RF environment
but yeah there's probably not a ton more you can do
@clear igloo @waxen scroll i hate trying to use Dante or NDI over the university’s network
Hey everyone, I'm looking to make a server for my small business. I will mainly use it to upload photos and videos to it. I would like give my employees the ability to access it as well from laptops. What would be your best course of action for this?
Anyone know why my HP Chromebook x360 14c-cc0047nr kills my wifi and what I mean by it kills my wifi is it takes up all my wifi and slows my other devices down and they randomly disconnect when it's on the wifi
Not sure if this is the right channel i cant find any routers that use and adsl phone line for connection (i have a really old house) they cant run fiber here aswell
You want an adsl modem
Need
@nocturne comet that's not it
It's on the side of your house
usually on the wall by your electric meter
it may look like this
Alright also one thing where does this cabel lead to then. This is what the cable provider installed the main router or modem
To the box outside (the one on the side of the house)
When the guy was setting it up he went to the picture I sent you
Yes that's where the ISP hooks it to the street
the box i'm talking about hooks it into the house wiring
Alright let me go outside and look for it
Found it
Did you want me to open it
If you can that'd be good
I just need to see what wires are in there
and how they're hooked up
I wont get electrocuted or anything right
they usually tie into the Coax and use their own system that screws up MoCA
Yea I don't cable overpriced
Are they labeled?
What would I need to connect itt to my room
You need to first identify what cable out of those goes to your room
Do any of those go into the ground?
You can eliminate those from your list
do those two go into the house?
One in ground which is modem 4 go into the hourse
Do you know how many coax outlets you have in your house
The one the modem is connected to doesn't count right
I'm just asking in general
so I'd count that
Can you also see if you can find a model # on this coupler
I'm trying to figure out what you'd need to buy lol
There's 3 upstairs
How many downstairs?
So you have 4 total?
Ya
Do you see 4 cables going into the house from that box
Yes there's 5 cables going into the house
5?
Yes

So you see those bottom two ports?
the two outs
I have a coaxial cable in my room already im pretty sure I'm just trying to turn it into ethernet
Yes, but it's not hooked up to anything currently
Yes, moca just converts it to ethernet
you need to somehow connect the modem line and your line somehow
that's what the splitter does
Dam so I need to connect the modem line to one of those 4 cables
Yea
the bottom cable is from the street
all the coupler does is connect it to your house wiring
the only cable currently hooked up is the modem inside your house
Would a diagram help?
Also there's 4 mb just 4 cables going into the house
alright that's fine.
Yea
You need to first figure out what cable is your room
Used for tracking Coaxial cables or checking cables for short circuits. It comes with a built-in red LED light that will turn red if there is a short in the cable; it also comes with an audible tone speaker for tone verification. Simply connect the transmitting end of the toner to the outlet you ...
lemme make a diagram
Can you get me a pic of the coupler while i'm making a diagram?
Whats the coupler again sorry
All good, it's the block that's connecting the cable from the ground to the house cabling
I just need a model number
I don't see a model number
You're good. Found it online.
Okay thanks
I was thinking about getting this moca it comes with a splitter ScreenBeam Bonded MoCA 2.0 Network Adapter for High Speed Internet, Ethernet Over Coax - Single Add-On Adapter for Existing MoCA Network (Model: ECB6200S02) https://a.co/d/9nPnVkB
ScreenBeam's ECB6200 Bonded MoCA 2.0 Network Adapter features a 2.0 Gigabit Ethernet port, delivering up to 2.0 Gbps In and 2.0 Gbps Out capabilities, giving you all the extreme high-speed bandwidth you need for flawless streaming of HD video, pristine online gaming, and all of your other demandi...
The one's on amazon are insanely overpriced
Oh
Its ok I understand it ground wire splits to modem and my room
the green is that coupler. You would unhook the modem line from the top and attach a short cable from that to the "IN" of a 2 port splitter. Then connect the modem line and your room to the "OUT"
Ground wire does not split it lol
Ground is just there for safety
Idk what i was saying but I get the point
You would need two of those 2 port splitters
one would of those goes in that box, the other one goes to the modem port
The one for the modem room, the IN hooks up to the jack, and the OUT hooks up to the moca adapter and modem
Now that is in the box correct for this ^
This is in the outside box
Yes
Yep, then the other 2 port splitter hooks up to the coax port by the modem
and follow the directions I sent
The coax port by the modem is downstairs though
Yes that's fine
What id the splitter for then inside the house?
To split the 1 coax jack by the modem for the cable modem and the moca adapter
they both need to be hooked up to the same jack
the splitter just gives you an extra port so you can hook both up
Wouldn't the moca adpater need to go into the coax cable in my room
you need two moca adapters
one to "send the signal" and one to "receive the signal"
cheap moca adapters ^
Oh what lol I thought moca just was a single adapter to convert coax to ethernet
No, it's a lot more complicated as you can see lol
But it's doable with some research (or discord) 😁
Yea well I appreciate your help blue. Do you by chance have any other options to increase my speeds? Other than coax
Coax is the second best option.
Ethernet is the first.
I can't recommend Powerline due to how flaky it is
it'd be about $130-140 to get MoCA all hooked up
I've tried that as well but there's 2 circuit boards for the house sadly
What do you mean? lol
For powerline ethernet
It wasn't getting the full speeds
Yeah, MoCA is your best option..
if you don't want to run cables
Dang that is a little bit frustrating
Yeah. I'll be honest with you, it may be alot to take in, but once you start doing it, it's actually pretty easy.
You're just hooking cables to certain places, kind of like building a pc or legos.
but WAY less time consuming haha
One last thing so the moca splitting with the modem in the house sends a signal wirelessly to the moca connected to coax in my room?
Lmao that is so true I thought of pc building the same way
Not wirelessly, two signals can exist at the same time on coax. That's how MoCA works with a cable internet provider on the same line
it uses a different frequency so you can have both.
Lemme write up an in depth explanation for you
Internet comes into the cable "box" on the side of the house, which then hooks up to a coupler. Unhook the top cable on the coupler and attach a short coax cable from that port to the IN of the 2 port splitter. Then hook up the Modem coax cable and your room's coax cable to the OUT of the splitter. Then go inside, and hook up the 2 way splitter to the coax outlet on the wall by the modem.. The IN goes to the wall jack. The out goes to your MoCA adapter and your cable modem.
After that, just pair the adapters via the buttons, close the box up and you should be good.
The hardest part is finding where every cable goes.
You can either get a cable toner (which plays a tone when you hook it up to the right one) or you can unhook the modem line from the internet cable and hook up each cable until you find your room, using the modem to see if you get a signal
Would like a wifi extender with an ethernet cable be any better at all because I'm getting like 2Mbpsto 20 Mbps
WiFi extenders usually do less good than more good.
I'm using a reconfigured wifi router as a repeater but that is not connecting for some reason after a power outage
It got me like 80-100 Mbps
That got me 10 to 11 ping lol on games like valorsnt etc
I mean you can try it and return it if it doesn't work out
Yes that's true. Do you think you know whats wrong with it?
Not sure honestly.
Yea its this crappy wav link but I guess it won't connect to the router. Its been blinking red
And I've tried reconnecting
Anyways I appreciate all your help blue. I'll get back to you if I have any more questions.
Yeah that's odd. And also, no problem!
Hey peoples. I need some help. I have my modem set up in my computer room upstairs, as a wired only, attached to my much better gaming router to distribute the signal. However, I don't get great coverage in the house, or family room (which is about a room away, but on main floor) and little to no signal in my basement.
What is the best way to spread better wifi in my home? Mesh system. Me and my kids game, surf the net and stream a lot of TV and "apps" like Disney, Netflix, Prime video, YouTube, etc.
Any advice and pointers would be appreciated.
I'm also on Fibre so using coaxial is no longer an option
the best is to run ethernet
if you still have coax in the house there's no reason you can't use it, it doesn't matter if your ISP uses fiber
if you don't have coax and can't run ethernet, powerline networking is decent
mesh only as a last resort
So I have coaxial and I can use that near my TV in familynroom, but not in my basement. Running wires to my basement or main floor for Cat is not an option bc my wife would lose it (ie not running through walls)... how does powerline networking work?
That might be the best option tbh for both main floor and basement.
you plug an adapter from ethernet into the regular power plug by your router, and another one in the basement from the wall plug back to ethernet to connect to an AP/wired extender
basically it does super small fluctuations over the actual AC power (i forget exactly how it works) and manages to get wired networking to piggyback on that
problem is that it can be a bit spotty, depends a lot on the electrical wiring in your house
i mean not spotty in regular usage - if it works it will continue to work
but it's hard to know if it will work until you try, because it depends on the layout of the electrical wiring
but also with either powerline networking or moca, the equipment cost does add up
it's worth checking how much it would cost for a competent electrician to just fish a few Ethernet cables through the walls and then you'll be set for life
and it may turn out to be cheaper than buying more moca or powerline adapters
Yeah. I'll look into that when I decode to finish my basement. Problem now is my TV "cable" signal is shite and I'm only maybe 20 to 25ft away... albeit on another floor.
But i will look in to the AC option. Might help for both.
Note that power line networking does not like to go over extension cords, power strips, battery backups or breakers. Ideally the endpoints will be on the same breaker.
imagine extension cords work for powereline like it was the mains.
We could techically call it a repeater or a switch since you could plug more into it
10 gigabit to the garage because why not?
ah yes, technology
What a pro install
The less electrical contact points, the better. If you plug it in to an outlet daisy-chained to another outlet, you’ll have better performance moving it to the root outlet.
Strictly not networking, but it is for my server closet. I'm looking for wireless thermometers i can put in to my server closet, to roughly monitor the temps in that room and inside the server closet.
Any recommendations where to start looking?
Hey guys, I am planning on doing a better networking setup for my house, currently I have the BASIC isp provided router/modem combo. however some corners of my house has dead space where I dont get any wifi. I have decided on having 3 POE access points, and would like to have a possibility to add POE security camera's in the future.
I am wondering what do you guys suggest getting, ubiquiti, tplink, or something else. not looking for very top of the line, just needs to do the job and ideally around 400-600$ range.
got you, I will look into that solution
what do you think of Ubiquiti Unifi dream machine? and the AP
yeah TP link is a good starting point
if you are willing to pay extra to have all in one security camera integration then the UDMP is a good option
if you might do security cameras someday in the future and you aren't super committed, I'm not sure it's worth the cost of entry
How do I know if my home network is wifi 5 or 6?
What’s a good router/modem for 250 gbps download, 10gps upload?
I have 1tb of data monthly
And need long range
range is a combination of 2 factors, the Access Point signal strength, but also client device. Best option is to have multiple APs, something like a mesh system with a dedicated backhaul is usually good enough for most home users as it's convenient (no wires to run), but still good enough
What’s a good one tho?
@clear igloo @rocky badge lots of Cisco on my cruise ship
cruise ship, who authorized this unapproved PTO?!?!
We don't have PTO approval. We don't ask either. We book it and tell
Good 🙂
lol
Should I buy a wifi extender, repeater or router with wisp to plug ethernet into my pc?
@meager ginkgo
what are you trying to do
if you just want to plug ethernet into your PC, you don't need any of those things
just plug it in directly
Cant my isp router is downstairs
you could do moca (ethernet over coax), powerline network adapters, or if neither of those are options, maybe a mesh system with ethernet on the mesh nodes
I had an old router reconfigured to a wisp getting me 80 Mbps and 10 ping but that won't connect anymore for some reason
Tried powerline i have 2 different circuit boards
So I'm not getting decent speed
I have a coaxial cable in my room but would need to buy of course mocas and do all the splitting and connecting
i mean, you can use some AP/router in bridge mode, but that's not gonna be any faster than just getting a wifi adapter for your PC in the end
And I have aidea thanks to blue for helping me
So would a wifi adpater for my pc be better or ethernet through a wireless ap/extender repeater etc
at least in theory they should be the same since they're both going over wifi in the end
i would say in practice a good wifi adapter for your PC is more compact, less expensive, and probably easier to set up
Would ping be the same though? Because I'm playing games like valorsnt csgo etc where that sorta matters
ping is never gonna be great over wifi
but yeah a pcie wifi adapter for your pc will be slightly better since it's directly connected to the CPU
I have a built in one but its really crappy
Like really really bad
hmm how old?
chances are a wifi 6 adapter with big external antennas will still do slightly better
but also check on antenna placement because if the motherboard wifi antennas are in the back of your PC right next to the case, they'll be blocked by the metal in the case
built in wifi on a recent motherboard should definitely be faster than an old router in client mode
something else could be wrong there, make sure you've installed the chipset and wifi drivers for your mobo
You don't understand how bad the built in wifi is check the specs on the board they cheaped out
Also where would I find the chips etc drivers etc
msi website, probably under support or downloads... idk specifics
hmm it looks like it's a preinstalled m.2 module for wifi
Yea sorry I should've thought about that. Just a little flustered is all
so you could just replace it with something better, hopefully with external antennas you can run outside of the case
it's still gonna be wifi in the end, ping can only get so low. before spending a bunch of money on that, do some price comparison on MoCA adapters
or convince your parents to let you run ethernet 😆
Moca adpaters are gonna set me back about 159 lol
They woukd if it wasn't an obstruction in my house lmao
the line i always used is that having wired networking makes the house seem super modern and improves resale value lol
but i get it, not always an option sadly
yeah a good wifi 6 m.2 adapter is probably still less than moca
Yea lol
Anyone know what router or device this belongs to? MAS4004BD1B5
its connected to our Internet as a network device.
yes, I googled it. Google doesn't know.
It belongs to you
Where are you getting that info from, are you able to get teh mac address?
Yeah
haven’t checked
I am FREAKING out
Found multiple intruder devices. Then I try logging into my router at 1:40 AM. It says another device is logged in. Nobody has the password except me. No other devices logged in as admin.
but, the nighthawk app says the intruder devices are blocked. Yet the desktop login says they're not. They're "allowed". How do I change that? RAX43 net gear router
Change your SSID and Password.
Hey, how many mesh devices do I need? I have a mesh in the living room, and I do get signal on the bedroom but would like it to be slightly better.
Do I need 1 mesh connected directly by ethernet, and then 1 or 2 more mesh devices to extend that? Or can I just do with 1 more mesh near the room which would extend that signal?..
how big is your house?
Not very big, the room is somewhat close, 5G works okay there but I do feel the speed drop, so just want it more stable with mesh.
you’d probably be fine with one more mesh point
just don’t place it in the bedroom, place it in between the main node connected via Ethernet and where you want the good signal
that way it extends a good quality signal
What mesh system do you have out of curiosity?
So I basically need 2 right? 1 near the router connected via ethernet, and 1 more in between?
Yes.
It's the D-Link COVR-1103, don't really know how good it is.
Ah. You may want to consider getting a new system
The system you have is a very entry level system with wifi 5
My internet is not that fast anyhow, so not much how much I'd benefit from it anyhow
what speed?
like 100mb download max.
I can upgrade to fiber technically, but my network stability is just amazing, and that's more important to me than speed atm.
And I know fiber should be better, but I've never had such good internet in terms of stability.
Fiber is usually more stable than anything else. 😅
Yep, I know...
Beat me to it!
^^
I’d highly recommend fiber if it’s cheaper or around the same price
I haven’t had an internet outage with fiber in 2 years
you could always keep both for a month and see which one stays online longer if you’re that worried about stability
It's a bit more expensive as I need to pay at least $200 installation fee, and I'm renting, so not really sure how worth it is to me for now.
Ah.. makes sense
I guess if there will be some discount sometime I might pull the plug, but for now I'm fine with it.
More speed is nice, especially upload speed tbh, but I'm mostly gaming, so stability comes first.
Your ping should be substantially lower with fiber also
I usually get 4-5ms to the nearest Speedtest server which is a good 30-50 miles away from my house
I think in my case ping shouldn't improve much, if at all. At least from people that I know switched.
It may depend on how your country’s infrastructure is set up honestly
Yep
@peak cloak @clear igloo
Who even needs ILO when you have people with ears
my ethernet randomly stopped working on a new motherboard
it has the lights showing that its connected to internet and running at 1gbps but doesnt work on my pc but ive tried on a console and it works
Driver?
updated already
@sudden kayak got new sim, didn't work at first, but after talking with support they did something and it worked
weird af. i wonder if they could have done whatever fixed it without needing a new sim lol
although to be fair a new sim likely fixes most issues
What do you mean
RJ45 is a standard, RJ45 is RJ45... Unless you're talking about the wiring itself
i mean cat 5 vs cat 6 cable
i cant for the life of me end the cable of a cat 6
wires are too thick
and I've done plenty of 5e
Cat6 can use thicker gauge wire iirc
Yah, the wires should fit easily into a cat6 connector end although sometimes on thinner gauge they work fine with the 5e ends it's always a toss up from my experience so I stick to just getting the 6 ends if I'm working with cat6
okay what I don't understand here is how newer Cat(X) standards allow for higher speeds. It's just wires right? They're all wired the same way, they don't add wires, they don't add or change the shielding or at least I don't think they do
how can it go faster? I just tested by connecting different cables I have from the modem directly to a computer, different types (one really old one and one new one) gave different speeds
thing is they are not wired the same. Yes it's all 8 wires, but for example between cat 5e and 6, they are twisted more I believe. cat 6 needs to pass tests at a higher freqency than cat 5e. You can do 10 gig on short runs of cat 5e, just that with cat 6 it's speced for that. Certain cables do have shielding like cat6a.
What was the difference in speed? Older cables may only have 4 wires inside, as only 4 are required for 100mbps
how twisted more? as in more tightly wound?
aha! yeah, makes sense
folks, question - is there any mobile device (Laptop, tablet or Phone) that is capable of HE160 on Wifi6?
In need of some help. I need to find the IP of a device. The device is connected to a HP Procurve 2610. As far as I can see it should have a default IP but I can't connect to it. I want to access it so I can see the IPs of devices connected to it. I need an IP from a device so I can access and use it. It's a mini computer completely unrelated to anything I need to talk about here. I've tried looking through the standard ISP hub but I can't see it, probably because it just displays the switch and nothing else.
Hellow Everyone~
I have an internet provider that provides a fiber 1Gbps downlink and 500 Mbps uplink through PPPOE authentication from a router.
Need help on recommended routers out there that i could get?
I just need the wired connections to be in the optimum condition for 3 heavy users at home. I already have Deco M9 acts as Wifi AP.
Currently i am using Archer C1200 from TP-Link, but the connections kinda fluctuates even in single direct connection. Directly dialing to the modem scores me 950~Mbps, but when using the router (the connection drop to circa 700~850Mbps)
Was thinking of Mikrotik but idk if im good enough to configure a Mikrotik
i cant express how DUMB that is without swearing
why?
@nimble sable MITM
I mean it's needed to scan for threats
hold on...the threat protection is USING MITM?
Companies and schools do it
that doesnt make it less dumb tho
like the huge risk involved with including an seperate Cert
i mean, theres no good way to do it though is there?
NordVPN should stay far from this practise
like Malicious Sites = Google Safebrowsing catched them faster than Nord (when i tested it) / Viruses = well Antivirus
I'd rather my VPN provider not be screwing with my TLS traffic thanks
Companies and schools can enforce whatever they like on their employees
But advertising for privacy and then doing TLS inspection seems very counterproductive
I'd certainly hope that particular antifeature can be disabled
If you must offer content scanning in your platform offer an optional browser extension, preferably one that does the smarts locally
If my router was behind the TV would the signals interfere? And cause wifi around the rest of the house to be poor?
Say behind this tv
Would it reduce signal range and performance?
Yes
interference is also a thing.. 😉
Any obstruction will reduce signal, it just depends if the amount will bother you... I reckon your main issue with a television is they're usually made with a large metal sheet behind the backlights - which might be grounded.
I'd try to go to the side or above it, if it's an aesthetics problem you can get devices that don't stand out as much
Yea I figured. Blue there is no more need for coaxial I moved it to the edge now I'm getting 120Mbps in my room lol
Not aesthetic I was getting 1 to 10 Mbps in my room now I'm getting 100plus
Moved it on the ledge and boom huge increase
Wifi advertising is starting to piss me off. I'm used to being lied to by advertising but Jesus Christ
Hey, so I have a computer with 2 NICs on it. If I wanted to plug one into my router and the other into another windows pc. Would that be possible to have the second pc have internet access through the first pc?
Yes, it is called internet connection sharing. But, there are probably better options. Do you use Dial-up software on your PC? Otherwise plug the second PC directly into router, that will be preferable.
No I’m just messing around with it really.
If you are messing around, try a Linux VM to do the connection sharing, might be fun to play with
This might be an unusual request, but does anyone know of a network card that has an Neutrik ethercon connector. I work in a touring company and we need a PC that can withstand touring use, and I don't really trust the traditional rj45 connector to do that
Does anyone know if this chip RTL8129EE supports the WIFI 5GHz band?
It does not
foos!
Yes, there are 2 ways. Either with bridging the 2 nics, or routing
If I have a 4x4 AP... And 2 2x2 wifi devices. Does MU-Mimo mean they're both able to utilize the full 2x2 at the same time? Do older devices not have MU-Mimo (eg 2020 MacBook pro 13"), what happens then?

Anyone know why implementing FQ_CoDel would drastically decrease my download speed?
I went from ~430mbps to ~180
Queueing is expensive on CPU and rules out a lot of performance optimisations
What device are you using to route?
Mikrotik little baby router
What Mikrotik?
Sounds likely btw, you lose out on fasttrack and fastpath with queueing
You could probably have a crack at using switch traffic shaping/policing if this is trying to resolve upstream bufferbloat and your Mikrotik has a switch chip (most do)
I think I tried that before and had limited results
And yes I am trying to chase down bufferbloat to hopefully improve gaming and streaming
If you want to implement queueing you need more powerful hardware
Otherwise, you need to prevent traffic that will fill buffers by bandwidth limiting at a hardware level.
what to I need to set up a custom nas?
a pc
my first nas was my 8 yo gaming pc from middle school
I shoved like 8 2 tb hdds in RaidZ2 with 2 240 gb ssds as a cache
I mean the networking stuff
a cable
do I need a network switch?
it could be helpful, but not necessary for your first nas
what does it do

as long as either A: Your current pc has two ethernet ports, B: you have a usb ethernet card, and/or C: you dont care if it has internet access
it enables you to connect to it on multiple computers on the network, and expands the available amount of network ports
think of it as a power strip but for ethernet
so it's a usb expander but for rj45
no
no
its a power strip
ok
but instead of AC outlets, it has ethernet ports
np
wait a sec, so do I plug the port in the nas to the pc I want to access the nas from
You could attach your NAS to your network
If you would like network attached storage
yes, otherwise it is a pc attached storage
Otherwise you can just use a USB hard drive
yes. much easier and simpler
so i should plug it into the network switch
Could someone help me with figuring out how I would go about giving ssh access to a linux vm when I'm outside my network?
VPN
How would I do it with a vpn so that I don't expose my lan
I guess I'm looking for a way to port forward to the vm
Look at tailscale or zerotier
my parents TV and my PC are both wired connections, however their Youtube TV signal cuts out, i tried downloading fast and that didnt seem to affect it
the router doesnt seem to have any physical settings, just 4 unmarked identical ports
any ideas on what they could do to make it faster and more stable for them?
(i can download at about 70MB)
Because the standards are different, different electrical boxes, etc
is 10gb upload and 1gb download a day normal? i game online, watch a lot of 1080p youtube videos and some other things and two others use the network also but its beng throttled.
in a month
usually used for afternoon to midnight or till 3-4am
or a whole day and 3-4am but that was yesterday so i wasnt home
in 3 hours ive used
how i can transfer my pc with internet to other Pc without internet ? possible? or need block mac address?
just through file sharing
finally found, need add restriction and we good 😄
oh damn it, checked via ping command, seems no response -.-
do they have IPs already assigned?
well even then you don't need to do that (because automatic link local)
just connect the 2 together, they should get link local ips, check with ipconfig /all and then just that IP to connect
i know but i dont want automatically update microsoft from drivers.
laptop no wire lan , just wireless
is there a good way to wash decade old dog piss off of a network cable
no offense but if its old enough to have decade old dog piss it probably just needs to be replaced
why are my download speeds so low?
speed tests (even if they aren't 100% reliable) show me speeds of 800 mbps however when i actually download games i only get around 2-10 mb/s, i used to get way over 40 mb/s a while ago but it just dropped out of nowhere
couple things to check. for one thing, download speeds are measured in Mbps (bits per second) but a lot of game downloads (most notably steam) default to showing you MB/s (bytes per second) so 800 Mbps would only show you 100 MB/s as the file download. that's part of it
another possibility is that the game download server just isn't that fast, or is far away in a network sense from your ISP's upstream connections
download servers also often throttle individual clients to keep it fair even if they technically have the capacity for faster downloads...
also double check your game client/launcher settings. a lot of games have options to limit the download speed on the client side so they don't take up all of your capacity and for some reason, those default to a really low limit sometimes (10MB/s is a common one)
i noticed when i tried to change my mac address on my Macbook, it very simple, but with my windows, i can't do it with a line of commands and apparently with my built in network card on my mobo, i can't change the mac address, so im stuck with this app i have to use to change it
my mobo is the msi mpg z690 edge ddr4
i can't find this in device manager for my netwrok car
is it called something else in Australia?
Yeah the text's upside down
It's driver-specific. Look for MAC Address as an alternative name
my wifi card is the intel wifi 6, ax201 160Mhz, could that be the problem, because i can change my mac address for the ethernet controller
Hi, I am planning to setup a NAS in my house, my WiFi mesh backhaul is wired. Is it OK to connect the NAS to one of the nodes? I am total noob in networking and just looking for the most convenient solution without sacrificing much speed
It's not ideal if you'll be using the backhaul to transmit all data from the NAS to other wired devices and the internet.
If consuming devices are on the same node it probably doesn't matter much
My main usage will be for data backup and plex library.
All downloads would be sent to Plex over Wifi, which probably isn't ideal but whether it matters or not's kinda up to how you use it
The consuming devices won't be on the same node, I am planning to keep the Nas upstairs in my room, while using the plex downstairs in the living room
Which means all traffic has to be sent twice.
Can't I just connect the chromecast to an with an ethernet will help with the issue?
If your mesh doesn't suck it might be fine, after all that's pretty much what a mesh is for
Cheap mesh routers share a radio for backhaul and 5ghz traffic, which would halve bandwidth or worse if the other node has poor connectivity
I have the linksys ax4200 setup across the house. It has a specific channel for the backhaul
is unbound forwarding every single request if forward-zone has "." in the list
Probably doesn't matter too much then unless the node's connection is poor
Worst case just find a way to move it onto the node with WAN access
Thank you for the help
Someone help, just bought a new motherboard with wifi 6, but after installing windows 10 the wifi adapter isn’t showing up in device manger
Go to your motherboard maker's website and get a driver for it?
Either stick it on a flash drive from a computer that does have internet, move your computer and use ethernet temporarily or tether your phone to your computer to do the download
98% of the time nowadays if you give the PC internet Windows Update will solve it for you

Hi, I need some Professional on PC hardware field to check this out. Lately I have been getting stutters in Online games, I checked my every other hardware in my PC and their Temperature vs Performance everything is normal. Also I keep my GPU driver updated. But when I checked my PCI Ethernet card, I found this problem. Its been checked wth Diagnostic tool provided by Realtek itself. Now I need some professional opinion if this is a big issue or is it common for every other NIC
Yo thanks, that helps 🥰
