#

Does smartphones still assume there is a microphone on the wired in-ear headphones if you connect them; & hence would the phone still try to use the non-existing microphone on them for voip calls like snapchat

#

or does it understand the difference & just put the audio into the wired headphones & keep using the built in microphone in your Android phone?

#

by wired I mean 3,5mm

The phone should be able to figure it out, but if you're trying to use a TRRS cable without a mic (not sure how, but ykno), it could assume there's a microphone input.

#

yes you can, and dunno if it ashows up as is device ain asio4all or in the steinberg asio driver theni think you can do asio with it..

#

that razr is a usb webcam

#

aand if you think about it ,... a mic plugged into a external audio dac , that plugs into usb , can do asio , baut a mic that plugs into usb can't? what kind of logic would that be

warm scarab
granite drum
#

if you use linux with pipewire and an RT kernel you can ... so its not a hardware limitation

warm scarab
#

what if you dont use linux lol

#

too bad ig no recordinng for you

granite drum
#

on windows you should be able to aswell now that i think about it , its not live but anything under 1ms is not noticable so

#

or guitar rig wouldnt be a product ...

warm scarab
#

im pretty sure this is a hardware limitation when you have to send signal to the pc and back

#

direct monitoring is supposed to be directly receiving the input to outout

granite drum
#

well yeah but if that happens under 1ms its not noticable , and guitar rig even does the proccessing in that time.

warm scarab
#

is it under 1ms though?

#

I don't know about that

granite drum
#

depends on the samplerate and the buffersize and what your cpu can handle

warm scarab
#

if you are in recording at upper samplesizes i doubt you will be getting a good real time listening experience

granite drum
#

thats where those high samplerates come in handy, as for the same buffersize ,double the smaplerate means half the latency

#

(and double the load on the cpu)

#

and you would have to have the entire chain in asioland, using tools like voicemeeter and vbcable's asiobridge eg might come in handy if going that route

#

or JACK2+ASIO, but i dont know if thats still popular these days

#

i used it allot but as it worked really easy to link stuff toghether

granite drum
#

because i recon its a better real time experience if you cpu can handle it

warm scarab
#

ig if you have a good gpu and its not a large project you can probably but im doubtful that will remain the same way without increasing the buffer as your projects start getting larger

granite drum
#

linux has rt kernels for that, windows hasnt unfortunatly , the closest it has is this option , and set it to optimize for background services

#

and secondly , your not doing vocals with a full project running , so either they are stems already or your doing them in advance depending on the genre

#

maybe a better point to make is this , if your setting up a professional studdio this prolly isnt the way to set things up , but if your looking to make the most out of the stuff you already have and what you can afford /are willing to put into it, there is no reason why it cannot work

Starting a discussion and putting forward a challenge

I personally don’t believe frequency response encapsulates everything that determines how headphones or speakers sound, but I know some people do, so here’s a challenge: consider measurable factors like interaural time differences, interaural level differences, cross channel interaction, step response, bandwidth, nonlinearity, intermodulation distortion, channel matching, crosstalk, load interactions, and any other objective behaviors you can identify.

Try to fit all of these into a model where FR alone explains the listening experience. If you can’t, please play with and consider the idea that maybe these other measurable factors play a significant or even larger role in what we actually hear.

To be clear, this is meant to encourage deeper thought and to force people to challenge their beliefs. This is not meant to say anyone's beliefs are wrong, or to attack any beliefs.
If anyone would like any help understanding any of the ideas I proposed or is unaware of their definition, feel free to ask, and do not feel as if it is wrong to not already know some of these phrases off the top of your head.

#

I won’t say what’s right or wrong, but here’s another thought experiment. Suppose you only know a system’s frequency response, FR(f), and the system is nonlinear in amplitude. Can you compute the total output for an arbitrary input by summing or integrating FR(f) across all infinitesimal voltage steps for all input voltages, without knowing the amplitude-dependent transfer function? Think about what this implies for relying on FR alone to predict real-world behavior.

(This one is more complex and if you don't understand integral calculus I recommend ignoring it and focusing only on the first thought experiment)

verbal fog

doesnt it not need grounding though

#

ive had so many pieces of audio equipment that i dont think ive grounded that have worked fine

broken grotto

....should design for that.

verbal fog
#

hmm interesting ive only ever really seen the opposite

#

even my newer like 2011s yamaha receiver only takes a 2 prong

#

and uh so has i think every receiver ive used at least that i can remember

#

i think its a hardware issue though but ill just watch some restoration videos or something and then maybe take a shot at the caps and see if that fixes it

broken grotto
verbal fog
#

the caps do look suspicious upon visual inspection so id like to get a better look at them eventually

verbal fog
#

that yamaha cost somebody 1500$ new

broken grotto
#

someone somewhere wanted to cut out the third conductor for ground, so they designed around it.

verbal fog
#

i dont know if its cost cutting uh what companies have 3 prongs then

broken grotto
#

it might have saved them $0.30 per unit, but the bean counter got a bonus.

verbal fog
#

if any i guess

broken grotto
# verbal fog i dont know if its cost cutting uh what companies have 3 prongs then

cost is the wrong tree to bark at, i should have rephrased that.

If you want a technical answer, then here we go. technically, avoiding grounding the unit would prevent ground loops. you can also absolutely design for lack of ground, adding extra separation between circuits. This just makes it so that earth isn't required in the design.

sometimes, if the receiver connects to other stuff, like. a cable box, it might indirectly ground via signal cables, so they don't need a direct earth connection.

#

but again, all three of those things enable you to eliminate the third conductor in the cable, which is cheaper; raw copper wire is more expensive than implementing most of those features.

#

one trick i've used in the past to do that is tying the ground to chassis along with the signal ground.

verbal fog
#

honestly i think ill probably just take things for what they are and just bring it back to normal standard working condition

broken grotto
#

also keep in mind that Japan uses two-prong ungrounded outlets, similar to the US's NEMA-1 plugs.

Designing the power supply to utilize the chassis and signals for ground means that it works in both Japan and the USA, because both countries utilize a similar voltage at the plug.

verbal fog
#

i may mod things one day but for now im fine just having it as it is(once i fix the hum)

broken grotto
#

Japan's outlets aren't always grounded, so you can't count on having a ground available like you can with US's NEMA-1 (and in some cases, older US homes don't have ground either.)

#

where if you buy audio gear from some place where a ground connection is required, it will always have the third conductor.

#

generally speaking, from a safety perspective, you should always ground metal chassis to earth.

broken grotto
# verbal fog that is interesting

yeah, i've been in engineering for a long time and learned many years ago that most stuff is driven by half legit, practical reasons, and another half by cost savings.

warm scarab
#

im pretty sure its just to have an excuse to sell 3 prong ones for 100$ more

broken grotto
# warm scarab is it really

yes, you eliminate an entire 6 feet of copper conductor, the three prong plug which costs more, and replace those with a single wire from signal ground to chassis.

#

replace 6 feet of wire and a plug with 3 inches of wire.

warm scarab
#

its so negligible

broken grotto
#

3 cents per unit is still 3 cents per unit

#

they can go to their boss and say how heckin awesome they are

granite drum
#

if the humm changes volume when you increas the volume on the amp vs your phone that may tell something where its comming from. may also be how the speakers/headset are/is wired to the amp, (common ground eg) and since wires act like antennas if you have long unshielded (and untwisted) wires to the speakers it may even be those that pick up the humm

It exists to ensure safety when not using a safety ground.

Does not mean you can just willy nilly use it with any device omitting ground, you still need to design for it.

Additionally, depending on the product you may be forced to utilize class II, such as a laptop power supply or plastic, insulating case.

The product drives the requirements, and the design is fitted around those requirements. Nothing I said is wrong. If they want to utilize a 2 prong plug, then you must design for IEC class II. There are practical reasons in a headphone amplifier to use a two conductor cable, but then your case and power supply has to satisfy Class II requirements, to be certified Class II. This may be driven to save cost, it may be driven geographically, maybe some of both.

plucky sierra
#

So I'm looking for some good speakers, but mostly for gaming

warm scarab
#

speakers being too good

plucky sierra
#

Some reviewers say the sound is too clean, that some games might sound bad, but I have no idea of how bad this could be

warm scarab
#

this doesnt make sense

plucky sierra
#

so they recommend the edifier 1700bt

warm scarab
#

idk man grab shitty logitechs if you think bad speakers make games sound good

plucky sierra
#

I don't think so, but I have zero experience with good speakers, that's why I asked here

#

It sounded weird to read ppl say it could sound bad in games...

warm scarab
#

reviews are based on demographics

#

its one thing to sell a burger to a pedestrian vs a gourmet

#

5000$ hifimans get shit on in comments and have like 4 star ratings on amazon

#

vs 200$ jbls often have 4.8 stars

#

which of these items do you presume is worse?

plucky sierra
#

Hehe got you

#

I can't even imagine how good a hifimans is

#

Must be heaven

warm scarab
#

i mean

#

the expensive ones are very good

#

then there are 100$ ones that just suck

plucky sierra
#

true

warm scarab
#

in any case one is a more enthusiast item that someone wouldn't find youtube ads for but in any case stereo speakers are fairly simple, good speaker is good for most applications typically

#

only thing you can branch onto for movies & games is surround which is expensive

plucky sierra
#

Hmmm I see

warm scarab
#

but stereo is simple, and good stereo speakers are good for most tasks they are supposed to be for, there isn't some mandatory fundemenral configuration because its an enthusiast or pro item

#

the most "advanced" configuration you can have is buying an adapter cable to plug them in maybe and position them according to a diagram as an end user

plucky sierra
#

Oh, also, I should always opt for wired against Bluetooth, right?

warm scarab
#

yeah for games definitely or else you'll have audio delay

#

for movies you can delay the audio/video so its not a huge deal

plucky sierra
#

Hmmm

#

Then I'm prolly going for the mr4, I loved the design and it's features look really great

#

And I can use with both tv and Pc too

warm scarab
#

idk the features honestly it just sounds good

plucky sierra
#

I got a 10 years old $30 speakers

#

warm scarab
#

they are older than me

warm scarab
plucky sierra
#

Holy, but they are the golden age of speakers, right?

warm scarab
#

kinda

#

back then people had so much less to spend on entertainment that spending like 5000$ for a stereo system in todays money was okay for them

#

you can still get some really good stuff for that money today though

#

lol

plucky sierra
#

Hehehe

lone flame
#

firstly. Games are optimised for headphones

#

if you wanna game you would need a surround system at its best

#

i personally would use headphones for gaming because they are way cheaper and easier to use than a full Speaker srtup

lean grove
plucky sierra
trail whale
#

i am trying to determine if this ES9218P can power dt990 600ohm without issues
but all i see is the output 2Vrms which is 6.6 mw for 600ohm dt990
and DT990 600ohm from the website (idk if this is the correct part)
are Nominal sound pressure level 96 dB -> 96db per mw
and going by the calculator (no more than 80db loudness cuz why would you want hear loss) power comes out to 0.03 mW (which feels kinda super low?)

where am i making a mistake?

lean grove
glad creek
#

However output voltage depends on Ohms

trail whale
glad creek
#

Just tell them you have some stupid beefy amplifier man that's all

trail whale
# glad creek They are such dumbasses

i sent them my headphones for a cable replacement 4 times
after first repair - they made this bleeding of L and R issue and 3 repairs after it still persists xD

trail whale
lean grove
trail whale
#

i am not sure thats correct 🤣 i ain't got that much power

glad creek
#

96 dB @ 1V should be around fine, the 250 Ohms is at 96 dB @ 0.7V I believe

trail whale
lean grove
#

@glad creek @trail whale I'm pretty sure the Beyer dynamics are 96 db/mW

trail whale
#

so output is 2Vrms which is 2*2/600*1000=6.6 mW
and calculator says that for it to be at 80db it needs just 0.03 mW?
so i basically have a lot of room?

lean grove
#

But still, you've uncovered the truth that headphones actually don't require all that much power.

trail whale
#

trail whale
warm scarab

it may clip

lean grove
warm scarab
#

nils is generally wrong so it will probably clip

lean grove
#

You won't clip the voltage unless something is being overloaded

#

And a high impedance headphone is the opposite of that

#

If something is clipping with this headphone it's because the input is too hot or it was designed to clip. Nothing to do with the Beyer's.

trail whale
lean grove
lone flame
#

if nothing is overloading it wont clip

warm scarab
#

idk most commercial amps clip at high volumes

they think its better for the customer to get clipping but listen at a desireable volume than vice versa

trail whale

no clipping
the only issue is that when i do the windows test
right channel bleeds into left

tested on low volumes

#

but i think its their issue of not knowing how to fix the damn headphones

The detection is there to limit the amp

analog eq is obsolete anyhow

digital peq is supreme

lone flame

they use an DSP

#

so Digital

zenith pawn
#

make a middleware device that does a digital PEQ

warm scarab
#

hardware eq isnt obsolete its better than software eq in specific applications

#

you just don't need the said applications in daily use

zenith pawn
warm scarab
#

having an amp per band gives you great capacity

lone flame
warm scarab
zenith pawn
#

Simply make a perfect device that responds perfectly to digital equalization

lone flame
warm scarab
#

and you can fuck with peaks and dips much better if you have parametric eq

lone flame
#

If you go over 0dB. it starts to clip

#

same with Analogue EQs. If you push it to loud. the signal overloads and it distorts

warm scarab
#

so otherwise you lower anything thats not the said frequency

lone flame
warm scarab
#

which is going below 0dB to not clip

warm scarab
#

im saying hardware eq doesn't need that

zenith pawn
#

simply purchase headphones that sound good instead of spending all day eqing :/

zenith pawn
#

No

#

Never

warm scarab
#

its just better

lone flame
#

that's why EQ is a nice tool

zenith pawn
#

but then you need 5.1 to get rear sound imaging

warm scarab
#

no?

#

why would you want surround

zenith pawn
#

gamers

warm scarab

its only good for movies

but music is stereo

#

you'd hurt your performance witg surround

zenith pawn

warm scarab

tulp is actually just an analog connection for a single channel, where the pin in the middle is the signal cable and the circle on the outside si the ground for that signal, white plugs often mean left channel and red right channel,,... so you shouldnt need anything extra to have it work on the output of a pc, other than maybe an adapter convert a audio jack to TULP or what have you , that is if you have analog out , if you dont have analog out a verry cheap usb audio card should do the trick so does a fullon external DAC but theyre more expensive

Those are DSD files already on your HDD... That's not ripping

granite drum

nope thats an sacd iso file

frosty ocean
granite drum

since thats as close i can get using my hardware as i dont have a ps3 or a bluray i can do a firmware mod on

the iso should be identical so there is no point in assuming otherwise since apparently foobar does see it as dsd files and not ripped ones

frosty ocean

And supports sacd, of course

granite drum
#

why the usb stick ?

#

there isnt a difference between smth on a usbstick and smth on the harddrive so its a weird depency

frosty ocean

I think older versions put the music files on the usb stick

granite drum
#

so again why doesnt that just run of a harddisk?

frosty ocean

Usb is for the bluray player

granite drum

ah you mean not a blueray 5.25"

frosty ocean

As long as its fat32

#

The one i currently use is a Sony S590, but i hear progress is being made on the UBP-X80, which I also own

granite drum
#

so the program runs on the player and sends it over the network assuming that that is the hard part done , since once it on the network i can even use smth like wireshark to reassemble it theoretically

#

also i wonder if no pcblueray drive can work with the format , how on earth did they do the mixes of that audio ... and wheter or not it was just mixed on a regular pc/mac , and then converted to be a sacd by whomever made money of the format,...

frosty ocean
frosty ocean
#

The bluray player is authorized to handle the files directly.

granite drum
#

so as i said, once its on the network , theire is nothing to it to reassemble it... so the lifting is done by the player and the thing on the usbdrive

frosty ocean
#

So, by running the program on the bluray, you have full access to the files and data that were supposed to be secured

frosty ocean
#

But i think the program also "asks" for the data. It doesn't just start broadcasting

# frosty ocean The bluray player is authorized to handle the files directly.

not sure if i get what you mean with this... i mean like audio is mixed for cd or for vinyl wich is completely different , so i assume for sacd there also needs to be a mix but if not able to mix and write a master using pc then how i wonder since its blueray so i assume by that time most mixing is done digitally ...

But if you don't want to run the windows program, I'm pretty sure there's a variant of the script that dumps the files to the usb stick

what i mean is that to me it seems most likely it was converted from PCM to DSD in the first place ...

frosty ocean
#

But once it's DSD, it's fucky

#

Maybe we can use AI to backwards convert to PCM

#

Unless it was converted from an analog tape?

converting using a dac that can do 192khz 32bit floats , should be able to get a perfect duplicate of what the dac would ouput when playing the dsd file , so not a 1:1 towards the source but a 1:1 towards the output

Honestly, if you don't have mental issues, with the right settings, using Foobar to convert to WAV should retain, like, 98.6% of the quality

The final boss of SACDs is the mythical dual-layer dual-sided non-hybrid SACD

#

"many" SACDs have two layers. One SACD, one normal Red Book.
So all the idiots who accidentally buy an SACD but don't have a player can still pop it in their player and nod their head and say, "Wow, the sound quality is so much better than a CD".

#

On a tangentially related note, why can i just take a picture in 48-bit or 64-bit. Why does "raw" need to be a thing.

Hey guys
I have a bit of a niche problem, I just got this Sony ā€ŽBDV-N9200WL theatre system and I hooked them up to my TV(that has Google’s OS) using HDMI for ARC

There’s is this feature in the speakers where the backlight RGB matches the TV screen, but this only works when there’s an external source coming into the speaker hub, but I just wanna use the TV’s OS

The Hub has a bunch of ports on the back and I can’t help but think there’s a work around for my issue
Plus, there’s a big delay when I change volume.

didnt even know there was a 2nd version.
i already ordered in the meantime tho and cancellation isnt guaranteed.

would you say its worth the hassle to go through returning the item manually to go from 1 to 2?
i dont really care about the 2€ price difference

Hey, I'm new to audio stuff, is it allowed to ask questions that are probably kinda obvious for others?

granite drum
# frosty ocean True. The only issue would be filesize. Especially for 5 channel albums

thats where wavpack can come in handy šŸ™‚ 5channel mono then wavpack on max compression should reduce it to 1/4 or half the size, and its still playable as wavpack, you could do paq8 or zpaq but they thake ages and arent payable unfortunatly(tired to compress a 1mb file using paq8 at some point on max ssettings, and i quit the process after an hour or so nt expecting it to be that insane

and they had a little bit of stage

#

bass was still kinda soft and loose though

better is solely determined by your preferences alongside what you listen to

nobody can answer that
