I misread somewhere and thought it was 75$ budget. idk how

My tv can do that, don't really know what that is though

#

Arc I mean

mighty forum
#

Technically this doesn't come out until may but

#

Now, there will be a ton of audiophiles here that probably can try to find more bang for the buck. I don't think most people recommend vizio and I'm not saying I recommend it. It was just a good cheap solution when I needed it kek

Y'all Im curious and wondering the difference as I am looking for different sound systems for my computer. I have a digital input for a cable for my motherboard as well as the regular inputs like aux and the rest, is there an advantage to one or the other in terms of quality and is there a better fit for my computer depending on the quality of sound Im looking for?

lean grove
placid needle
#

so how would go about shopping for sound systems?
is there a cost to performance logic to follow so I dont overpay for "features" that are just normal features designed to trick me into paying more?

#

I would personally like a sound system with good clear sound, good bass(i really like to feel bass) for a budget of like 130-150 dollars max. Preferably, Id like to hit a price point of 120 or less if possible

lean grove
placid needle
#

fair

lean grove
#

Best thing to do is to ask knowledgeable people, which is also hard since there's an excess of very unknowledgeable people mixed in with the people who know what they're talking about

placid needle
#

thats is why I find myself here at an attempt at doing LOL

lean grove
#

My recommendations would be edifier 1280, edifier mr4, or Klipsch pro media 2.1

#

Klipsch pro media is gonna be your best bet for powerful bass. But edifier is better everywhere else.

placid needle
#

is there any sort of con to using bluetooth system?

nova wagon
#

biggest con is bandwidth, theres only a few codec that can actually stream lossless file fully
but if your source file is not lossless to begin with, there's no point in that really

placid needle
#

interesting

nova wagon
#

obviously range is another one

placid needle
#

I am confused, these look idnentical why the price differences exactly?

placid needle
#

what does that mean?

nova wagon
#
THX

THX is a suite of high fidelity audiovisual reproduction standards for movie theaters, screening rooms, home theaters, computer speakers, video game consoles, car audio systems, and video games. The THX trailer that precedes movies is based on the Deep Note, with a distinctive glissando up from a rumbling low pitch.
THX was developed by Tomlinso...

#

this thing

#

tho i dont understand why the non certified thing is more expensive

#

LOL

placid needle
#

ALL I NEEDED WAS THE VISUAL LOOOOOL

#

The non-certified has 260 watts of something or another...Power maybe? I dont know

#

but does that make it worth another 20 USD?

#

no the thx has 260 watts

#

now Im fonsued LOL

#

I spelled that wrong

#

I am befuddled truly

nova wagon
#

usually the certified thing is more expensive cause they have to pay for the licensing of using the certification ip and shit

#

realisitically speaking i think they are the same thing???????

civic beacon
lean grove
lean grove
#

Like meeting certain volume levels without shitting yourself

placid needle
#

okay but the THX thing on the old VHS movies nearly made me do that as a child

#

that sounds like the opposite

civic beacon
#

Hot take (or maybe not so hot these days)... THX is simply marketing hype these days. It might've held merit if an actual sound company still owned it, but Razer's owned it since 2016 so... make of that what you will. 😉

placid needle
#

really???

nova wagon
#

Yea

placid needle
#

thats crazy

#

wtf

nova wagon
#

There are cerfitication that actually makes a products better, but THX ain't one

civic beacon
#

ALWAYS look into the "certifications" of ANY product you purchase - they're kind of like a vehicle's gas mileage rating. Cough looking at you, Energy Star stickers found on appliances everywhere across North America.

placid needle
#

see thats what I meant earlier by paying for features that werent actually features LOL

#

but the klipsch speaker Nils recommended is still good I am assuming, regardless no?

nova wagon
#

yea

#

good low budget speakers

civic beacon
lean grove
#

For home theater or actual theater it probably matters just a bit more

#

Since their certifications actually mean something there

nova wagon
#

a pair of good bookshelf speaker costs like 400

placid needle
#

what is like, an example of good low budget, the mid range, and high range?

#

what makes the difference? as opposed to just "speaker sound gooder"

lean grove
nova wagon

fucking dummy tweeter glue on

civic beacon
# placid needle what is like, an example of good low budget, the mid range, and high range?

As with anything online, don't blindly trust a singular source, but... may I present to you a place to get started on your quest for acceptably decent consumer grade home / computer audio? https://www.nytimes.com/wirecutter/search/?s=speakers
(Keywords: "get started" - there's more to audio than picking "the best speakers" because what's "best" is subjective.)

lean grove
placid needle
#

the adhd hyperfixation for resarching is beginning to develop

civic beacon
lean grove
#

Number two is dispersion. So how "focused" is the sound coming at you.

A speaker which doesn't have sound that bounces of the walls or floors as much, or if it does bounce, does the bounce sound the same as the speakers direct sound radiation.

This is very hard to do and is the difference between a good speaker and an amazing speaker.

civic beacon
# lean grove Logitech is unrivaled when it comes to making speakers look as expensive as poss...

Same with Sonos, though their speakers are at least far better than any Logitech's I've had. I honestly wish I had more free time, cause I'd ditch Sonos to build a custom whole-home audio solution. Alas, for now I'm "happy" getting fleeced for the convenience of their multi-room speakers. (Rather, the family is happy with how they work... and I don't want to always be called on because "it's not working again, please fix it!")

lean grove
#

There's also things like bass extension and efficiency. But bass extension becomes a non-issue when you buy a subwoofer.

And efficiency is overcome with any normal speaker amp that can do 100-200 watts

lean grove
#

Making transmission line speakers, custom plastic injection molded waveguides, the entire body is one single part

#

And then some 5th order bandpass fart box tuned to 60hz to make up for the shitty driver

civic beacon
#

Mhm. It's like, okay, I see that you put some level of effort into "design choices", some of which do help shape the audio, but also... those are some mighty inexpensive generic drivers ya got there, so why this $800?

lean grove
civic beacon
#

🤣

lean grove
#

And has more connection, a subwoofer, it's smaller, has lights

#

Yeah. In audio you can usually assume that there's a 4-5 markup between the cost of the parts and the final MSRP of the speaker

#

With Sonos, idk if there's a premium with all the software that comes with that

civic beacon
#

Mind you, the lower woofer of the speaker box on the right almost looks like its outer rubber cone is deteriorated. Could just be my eyes / the image (or my uneducated smooth audio brain) though.

lean grove
#

No. That, my friend, is a meta material that makes it so the surface area of the woofer remains constant throughout the full extension

#

The woofer alone is $450

#

one woofer. For one speaker.

civic beacon
#

Damn, and indeed they went ham with the inputs for it being the same dimensions as a binder so as to fit perfectly into a bookshelf. Much respect.

I thought you were connecting the rca inputs to your motherboard outputs

lean grove

Pretty sure the rear RCA is the same circuit as the headphone out

warm scarab
#

Isn't it exclusively pre out

lean grove
#

What if you made a pre-amp that also had enough power for headphones.

#

And you wanted to make it the best value you can

#

Would you:
A. Make completely different amplification stages for headphones and pre-outs
B: make a pre-out that can power headphones and route it directly into a switched headphone output.

#

damm

#

oh found it £109.99 damm apparently more expensive in the uk

#

im not looking for excellent levels of audio just like adequate im rolling with really good headphones

#

kinda just for when im watching general stuff

lean grove
#

this is where adequate starts

vague dock
#

dammmm

#

really

#

👀

lean grove
#

gotta keep in mind that there's usually a 5x markup for speakers

vague dock
#

true

lean grove
#

so these $120 speakers cost less than $30 to make

#

parts and labor

vague dock
#

damm you capitalism

lean grove
#

indeed

#

You can also take a look at creative pebbles or klipsch promedia 2.1

#

the promedia gets down really low sometimes and it can get real loud. the small speakers are also easy to position

#

creative pebbles are just dirt cheap and acceptable for that

vague dock
#

ohhh ive seen those before

#

the speakers i was looking at originally were these Sanyun SW208 3

#

the pebbles are dirt cheap

#

damm

lean grove
#

they also have a version that comes with a subwoofer

vague dock
#

the pebbles pro are within my budget as well

lean grove
#

the speakers you linked look too good f or a price like that. they probably spent their entire budget on the plate amp on the back and the cabinet. cheaping out everywhere else you cant see.

#

so i am suspicious of them

vague dock
#

subwoofer package for pebbles is cheap as hell

#

reviews say price matches really well with quality so probs is not perfect

#

would a subwoofer be worth getting

lean grove
#

if you plan on playing them loud, yes.
if this is just for watching videos at a desktop and you're short on space, no

vague dock
lean grove
#

even audio reviewers suck.

#

well, most of them do

vague dock
#

its mostly prefrence from what i have gathered

lean grove
#

well

#

thats a part of it certainly

#

its just really hard to gauge speakers since they sound different in every room, in every position.

#

so there might be some $20 speakers that sound godlike in the perfect room for them and some $2000 speakers that sound like ass in a terrible room

vague dock
#

im gonna be in a house share soon so im probs not gonna want lound ass speakers

lean grove
#

as a reviewer you gotta look at the sum of all the parts, see what was a good design decision, listen in a lot of different ways to these speakers, and then if possible, get good measurements of what they're capable of.

otherwise there's not really a good way to gauge how good a speaker is without hearing it in your room

vague dock
#

ahhh ok

#

so im gonna have to gauge how it will sound

#

in my room

lean grove
#

well. if you're a reviewer yes

vague dock
#

hell no

lean grove
#

this is still about reviewers

vague dock

DVD-Audio (commonly abbreviated as DVD-A) is a digital format for delivering high-fidelity audio content on a DVD. DVD-Audio uses most of the storage on the disc for high-quality audio and is not intended to be a video delivery format.

narrow violet
#

speaking of small amps/dacs

#

I have a question about basics here - assuming I trust my motherboard to produce a good digital signal out of its 3.5 mm jack (I do) - what is the ideal way to handle that signal when I have powered bookshelf speakers which take 3.5 mm in and headphones (Sennheiser HD 599s) which want some power but not a tremendous amount (they are 50 ohm) and I would like an easy way to switch between the devices ideally with a hardware switch. the speakers have a headphone jack and are listed at 15W RMS which seems more than adequate to power the headphones but I have no idea if that number applies to the headphone jack on the speakers or if that's just what they themselves use, or how to choose whether the speakers or using the output or passing through to the headphones when headphones are connected

#

note these are new speakers and I do not have the headphones yet this is a new setup I am getting sorta piecemeal as my last gear more or less exploded and was held together by electrical tape and wishes and I'm trying to get by with what I have and can get

or cloud 2 or cloud III

crimson wedge
#

I asked a lot of questions

elder thistle
#

oh, damn

crimson wedge
#

yea before buying

#

While the headset isn't bad

#

but its not for a competitive environment

elder thistle
#

a lot of audiophiles don't play competitive fps games

crimson wedge
#

I did ask that im gonna buy it for competitive

elder thistle
#

there appears to be a general disconnect between gamers and audiophiles where gamers think there is something to learn from the audiophiles, but audiophiles think there is nothing to learn from gamers (regarding audio)

#

I doubt you would've gotten a different answer by saying it was for competitive games

#

unless you would tell them that includes noise isolation

crimson wedge
#

maybe ill sell it

#

and buy the dt 990

elder thistle
#

the mackie mc450,

#

is my gaming juggernaut at least for cs2

#

two days ago I was playing cs2 with someone who had the dt990 250 ohm, so I wore the same thing since I collect headphones like this

lean grove
elder thistle
#

a gamer is a type of trained listener

#

but also with a lot of field experience regarding that listening

lean grove
#

A gamer is a walking bag of money waiting to spend money on anything they can convince themselves will help improve their competitive score.

#

Audiophiles have a similar crowd for fancy cables and chakra field aligners

elder thistle
#

someone can be a trained listener and not know anything about the equipment

#

bruh that's like 90% of musicians

lean grove
#

I don't see how that's relevant.

elder thistle
#

"not knowing what to buy" can coexist and have no effect on whether someone's a trained and experienced listener

lean grove
#

Sure.

hearty pollen
lean grove
#

But again. I have no idea how that's relevant here.

elder thistle
#

I see audiophiles frequently point to headphone choices for gaming where the actual performance drifts away from the stated goal

#

it's a knowledge/experience handicap audiophiles often have

#

and it affects the kind of help gamers receive

lean grove
#

The alternative is gamers buying more ewaste made by companies who have no intention of delivering an actually good product.

#

With rare exceptions.

#

But the headphones are made dirt cheap. They fall apart after 2 years and people don't know that a well built headphone from an actual audio company can last decades.

#

And best of all, those headphones from actual audio companies tend to sound way better.

#

Worst case scenario. If they hate their headphones. They can return them and get all or most of their money back.

#

And they can come back saying what they dislike and we can move on from there

nova wagon
#

I would say folks like fresh reviews are turning the gaming spectrum towards good audiophiles products that are advantageous to competitive games

lean grove
crimson wedge
lean grove
crimson wedge
#

competitve i meant

#

closed backs are better for those

lean grove
#

What does a competitive headphone offer that an audiophile headphones do not.

crimson wedge
#

can barely hear anything

#

outside noise

#

I gotta pump white noise in my ears when playing

lean grove
#

If you had a quieter room and a louder headphone port would that magically turn a bad competitive headphone into a good competitive headphone?

crimson wedge
#

can barely hear anything in game

lean grove
#

So to me it seems like this is a problem specific to your circumstances

crimson wedge
#

no it makes sense why most competitve pros still use the "gaming" headsets

#

I saw people shitting on those but those are actually good for "gaming

lean grove
#

Irrelevant of their paid sponsorships to use those headphones of course

crimson wedge
lean grove
#

They use dollar store plastic headphones because they're the best and not the tens of thousands of dollars they get paid to wear them

crimson wedge
#

U throw both of them they gonna break regardless

elder thistle
crimson wedge
#

like before I could hear footsteps but on this one i cant at all

elder thistle
#

usually more comfort potential per dollar spent

crimson wedge
#

all i hear is buncha bass

#

but one thing is for sure open back for competitive is a no no

#

maybe ill get a closed back headset

#

whats a good one

lean grove
#

Meze liric

crimson wedge
#

prefarably one where if someone is dying next to me i wont hear

elder thistle
#

what games are you playing

crimson wedge
#

thats it

#

I play couple times a week and even then if i cant enjoy it then its sad

nova wagon
elder thistle
#

oh I did a lot of this

nova wagon
#

but tbh, ive noticed a shift to audiophiles iem that has favorable characteristic for some comp shooter, especially in val

elder thistle
#

for valorant my overall takeaways were cloud II or better yet m50x clones in terms of just hearing the direction of sounds and not having sounds mash together so much

crimson wedge
# nova wagon now that's the sponsor part

yea thats that but if a "better" headset was actually better for their purpose then they would 100% switch but fact of the matter is it doesn't grant any advantage

nova wagon
#

cs too recently with cs2

crimson wedge
#

but I just like headsets

#

on my head feels comfy

nova wagon
#

them using IEM is the byproduct of having to put on noise cancelling headset on top

crimson wedge
#

but still pc38 is probably one of the quietest headsets i have ever used

hearty pollen
#

aside from this gaming headphone vs audiophile headphone discussion it seems like a normal headphone jack from the usual motherboard cant power the pc38x to its full potential terms of volume

nova wagon
#

so the big boi headset you see them using on stage is purely for noise seperation/cancelling

elder thistle
#

the m50x clones being actually great, but not everyone gets the expected experience with an m50x or it's clones

#

one moment

crimson wedge
#

u think i get a dac

#

maybe that helps make it louder?

hearty pollen
#

i tried the pc38x with and without a dac

#

it literally feels like you doubled the volume

crimson wedge
#

really?

#

then might have to get a dac

#

then

lean grove
hearty pollen
crimson wedge
#

legit just played w someone and they said its too quiet w/o the dac

#

its like edgin bro

elder thistle
#

it's quiet because the dynamic range of valorant is high

#

(another disconnect between audiophiles and gamers)

crimson wedge
#

so how do i make it dynamic

#

surely this "good" headset is capable of that

elder thistle
#

potentially,

crimson wedge
#

idk the only other headsets I have seen games use is the dt's

elder thistle
#

a compressor vst in eqapo

crimson wedge
#

is the dt990 good?

elder thistle
#

wuh

#

well the issue with volume is mainly a digital domain thing, not headphones

crimson wedge
#

so what do i do

#

I feel like everytime i have the headset on I can't breathe

elder thistle
#

is there a reason you can't use a compressor?

crimson wedge
#

gasping for air

crimson wedge
#

idk much about it

elder thistle
#

vst compressor for volume

nova wagon
elder thistle
#

er

#

also before it's too late here's a bunch of recordings of the discussed headphones on valorant

lean grove
hearty pollen
crimson wedge
# nova wagon what? how

when I hear everything loud and clear it feels like breathing normally, but when its quiet it feels like when ur gasping for air

elder thistle
crimson wedge
#

idk my hearing and breathing is sorta synced

nova wagon
#

tho being an open back, you should still hear the background noise somewhat

elder thistle
crimson wedge
#

I didnt mean it that way

elder thistle
crimson wedge
#

U hear how on the 38x u hear the gun sooo loud, everything else is lower

elder thistle
#

all of them do that

crimson wedge
#

nah

elder thistle
#

maybe if one has more treble though, guns will have more bite

crimson wedge
#

on the hyperx i hear everything about the same

#

the gun and the footsteps about the same loudness

hearty pollen
crimson wedge
elder thistle
#

er one moment

hearty pollen
#

i would be surprised if my hearing is also shit at 17

elder thistle
#

I will demonstrate to you the power of compression

crimson wedge
elder thistle
#

yes free software

crimson wedge
#

and better?

hearty pollen
#

the thing is the most reviewers for audiophile products just plug the headphones into their powerful dac/amp and call it a day

crimson wedge
#

damn now i gotta get a dac 😭

#

whats a cheap one

hearty pollen
#

obviously something like this just flies by

im out of that industry

crimson wedge

wb the scarlet

#

thats the one popped up on amazon

nova wagon
#

left is pc38x, right is cloud ii for comparision and cloud ii actually requires more power than the pc38x
but getting an decent dac/amp is not a bad idea

crimson wedge
#

people have been saying its quiet cause of the mobo

lean grove
#

not 108

#

idk where drop got that number from but 108 doesn't mean anything

lean grove
#

matches amirs measurement almost perfectly

crimson wedge
#

so whats the play here team

elder thistle
#

this has the same max volume as the other sound demos

lean grove
#

actually it matches 95 db/mW perfectly

crimson wedge
nova wagon
lean grove
#

but still. it needs 1 volt for 110 db

crimson wedge
lean grove
#

what kind of shitty audio output cant do 1 volt

elder thistle
#

it's not any particular headphone, but the quiet sounds are brought up in volume
