I would say that a sleeve is much better than an Extension. The 12vhpwr cable already have connection problems, adding another connection in between increases the risk that it burns.

One Addition: You could look for replacement cables with sleeves. Some manufacturer or third party companies provide replacement cables with high quality. They go directly from your PSU (if you have a modular one) to the gpu withouth another connection.
