so basically he wants a NAS, starting with 8TB usable HDD space. He also wants Nextcloud and Jellyfin. Okay so I'm adding an SSD for cache. We're running UnRAID because it's what I'm familiar with and its pretty good anyways. Besides his house is 1gig so no need for more than single disk perf.

I went with the Node 304 chassis, which supports up to 6 3.5" HDD. Problem though, we live in current economy so the best option I could find is an AsRock board with an N100 built in. That CPU actually has the perfect headroom (not to mention low draw) for this setup, provided a GPU for transcoding. This is why I have an Arc A310.

Slight problem, this board has only 2 SATA ports. Thats why I have the M.2 adapter.

650W corsair PSU, provides up to 8 SATA power cables, cool I can power the fan hub too.

But wait, we have a problem. A big problem. This motherboard only runs off of a DC jack. Okay fine I'll install a PSU tester on the 24pin, cut the EPS, and solder it to the jack on the bottom of the mobo problem solved.

Except this board ONLY takes 19VDC, not 12-19 like some others. Welp, now I'm screwed. I have to tell customer it's delayed because I'm a stupid idiot and messed up the design... Just kidding I found a 200W 12->19VDC boost converter meant for cars that fits in the build just barely so I'm using that instead lol @placid blaze

However, two problems:

1 - A laptop power brick is generally less durable for 24/7 use than an ATX PSU
2 - Requiring two power cables, and at that two different power cables, is dumb

8-Pin EPS provides far more than enough current on its 12V rail to power the board + the N100 + slot power for the GPU, provided I run it through a 19V boost converter which is what I did

It's janky, but a more elegant and reliable solution for something that should be always on for a long time

well, it's a coin toss. 22GB VRAM will allow you to run more stuff (i ran on same VRAM with slower GPU llama.cpp with Qwen3.5-27B@IQ4_NL with Q8 K-cache and Q4 V-Cache and 115k context length.

On other side if you want only a MoE model, a single 16GB modern GPU with some CPU offloading could be alright too. Qwen3.6-35B-A3M@IQ3_S with Q8 K cache and Q4 V cache and letting lm studio to decide how much to offload to CPU - it took my 4080 Super a bit over two minutes to process a ~16k context (size a bit smaller to initial claude code prompt) . In other words, 122 t/s PP and 20 t/s TG. Those wer the numbers i was getting on the 22GB VRAM 1080 Ti setup with Qwen3.5-27B.

It's simple really:
PP = Prompt processing = the text you or your coding agent sends to the model. It needs to read all your text. If claude code sends 20k tokens on initial prompt, Then the LLM needs to process all those tokens. You divide the number of tokens sent by the client by the number of seconds it took => PP tokents per second. A number of 1000 or higher is nice for coding agent, that means initial response comes after 20 seconds. 100 means 200 seconds for same initial data.

TG = Token generation - how fast the response comes. It is usually shorter than prompt, and usually also much lower. 30-40t/s is acceptable speed, 20t/s or so is usable.

i mean for prompt processing the LLM memory speed is the limiting factor. 5090 has over 4 times the memory bandwidth of 5060 Ti, so 5090 would be bored. I mean i can do Qwen3.5-27B@Q4 with 200k context and Q8 K/V cache with a bit of room to spare on a 32GB VRAM system (2x 5070 Ti). You could do the same and have faster speeds, and have the other two GPUs as spare for other tasks. Or use only the 5070 Ti + 5060 Ti (if they are both 16GB) and have half of my speed, but have the 5090 for gaming at same time
