#

See the link I posted - there's like 41 combinations lol

devout ridge
#

oh god

topaz veldt
#

Then also depending on what heatsinks and ducting is in the server they may not even fit

#

its kind of a shitshow to be honest

odd sable
#

its configurable

topaz veldt
#

Its what

odd sable
#

its a configurable shitshow

topaz veldt
#

Its a configurabel shitshow when you buy new from Dell

#

trying to make it work 2nd hand off ebay is hell

odd sable
topaz veldt
#

I don't think they have $20k

odd sable
#

jUsT bUy NeW fRoM dElL tHeN

topaz veldt
#

@devout ridge so anyway its just confusing af. And R740 was the era where not many people spec'd GPUs yet so almost all of the configs on ebay are without GPU

patent gorge
#

I'm confused. aren't risers passive components. as long as it's the right number of lanes and validated for the necessary speed per lane, anything else is just for finding a shape that fits your case best? thonk

odd sable
#

R740 is also skylake xeons, which are meh

topaz veldt
#

They are fine

#

Just GPU config 2nd hand is a headache

devout ridge
topaz veldt
#

well it also maps to CPUs

devout ridge
#

the Riser isn't just PCIe, but also power breakout for the card

odd sable
#

its not necesscarily as cheap per unit, but also consider getting an 8GPU cahssis

topaz veldt
#

You could also forego 3 x P100s and just get a big ram current GPU and do better lol

#

I would take a 5090 over 3 P100s

#

distill or quantized model

#

P100 is going to be dogshit slow

odd sable
devout ridge
topaz veldt
#

P100 is going to be unbearable inference

devout ridge
#

Wouldn't get the same quantity of VRAM

#

P100 is also good price to performance for my other need, F@H (FP32 mainly)

topaz veldt
#

😒

#

i would just not recommend building out a platform with that kind of hardware in 2026

devout ridge
#

i'm broke and i like experimenting, and that's the cheapest way to do it

cosmic gazelle
#

you are correct @merry stirrup 1.35 performs exactly the same as 1.42 lol

#

looks like i do indeed have c die in a trench coat

merry stirrup
#

lol

cosmic gazelle
#

still maxes out the frequency of the 2400g’s imc so whatever

green marsh
# topaz veldt

i am still looking at choice between B70 Pro (1300 euros), 2x 9070XT (1300 euros), 2x 5060 Ti (1200 euros), 2x 9060 XT (800 euros)

#

need to decide in ~1-2 weeks when i get my yearly bonuses 😄

topaz veldt
#

Single GPU always

green marsh
topaz veldt
#

I'd also start looking at the mac minis/studio/amd jawns with lpddr5

green marsh
topaz veldt
patent gorge
#

how many tps is usable really depends on your use case

green marsh
patent gorge
#

if you're running batch tasks at home or just testing code to be deployed elsewhere, lots of ram and low speed is fine. if you're running something that should actually serve some convenient real-time purpose for you, then... at some point if it's too slow you're just not gonna use it

green marsh
#

i mean 20t/s token generation is fine. prompt processing at 300t/s when context is 60k+...

green marsh
topaz veldt
#

Yeah I think a 48-128GB mac mini has more utility than a B70 pro, so I always tend to go that way

patent gorge
#

ah, I haven't tried doing coding with a local model, but I run a local model for a bunch of other things - autocaptioning, translation, OCR. image gen I've played around with it for fun but can't really find a good local use for it

green marsh
#

i mean luckily i can try m4 24GB at work

topaz veldt
green marsh
devout ridge
#

working on switching from those stupid cables to jumper wires

patent gorge
#

can't really figure out how fast the big models you'd run on 128gb is from that I guess, but might get some relative comparison

#

lots of ram makes it tempting to run big models, and then you realize the big models are much slower...

green marsh
green marsh
patent gorge
turbid locust
#

lmao

green marsh
patent gorge
#

I run that model for OCR and translation

#

OCR is an annoying thing because the model likes to get into loops and then you have to retry or split up image to try again. and loops make the task take forever since it makes it always hit the max token limit

green marsh
patent gorge
#

oh yea I just made a gemma4 version a few days ago too, seems pretty good so far

#

haven't tested if it hits loops as often as qwen3.5 did

topaz veldt
#

I wish I could feed the audio from my security camera through a real time translation spanish -> english so I coudl figure out what the worker dudes are yelling about lol

patent gorge
#

blobcatthinking well that's super easy because openai whisper model automagically translates as well, I'm not even sure you can turn it off lol

green marsh
merry stirrup
#

green marsh
frank zealot
young void

Nope thats why their backed up bless can now reset the phones and usem as needed

green marsh
young void
#

I just copied it all over for safe keeping is all

#

Each phone had diffrent pictures and such from over the years* well and my wifes*

#

So now if I plugged my hdd in it could be a server if I wanted it to or nas

devout ridge
#

finished the rewire

#

so much tidier

#

now we see if the LEDs blow up cause i’m running them at 4x the rated voltage

#

3v LEDs running of a 12v power supply

young void
#

Toss a resistor between?

devout ridge
#

Yep, that’s what i did and they’re doing fine

#

just making sure i added a big enough resistor that they last long term

young void
#

I forget how to read the lines been awhile

devout ridge
#

470ohm resistor

cosmic gazelle
#

@merry stirrup will this help me tune my ram

devout ridge
#

yes, will let you OC to 69420mt/s

devout ridge
#

is the issue with running higher voltage just the increased wattage?

#

and that’s why adding a lil resistor makes it run just fine?

young void
#

Wattage and heat, easy to pop unless there's a resistor or insulated/at a gauge that isnt going to melt/burn and depends on materials so always want to be within the circuits components threshholds. I'm also super rusty. To much resistance and the signal can be weakened or controlled sometimes depending what one's doing. Anyone feel free to correct i dont do electric often

devout ridge
#

lol a regular fell for the scam

young void
#

Minecraft is a good example of this with its spaces of how far Redstone traveles with x loss and how you can change it with comparitors and repeaters

#

Same same but diffrent

topaz veldt
topaz veldt
#

its not a voltage thing as much as it is a current thing

#

they are current-limiting resistors

#

voltage is a constant input

devout ridge
#

so by increasing resistance, i decrease current, meaning less power running through the diode

topaz veldt
#

yup

#

and at scale, the heat goes somewhere - where does the heat go?

#

into the resistor

devout ridge
#

That’s kinda what i meant, but with more exact terms

topaz veldt
#

thats why resistors have a watt rating

young void
#

One of the first checks if your circuit poops

devout ridge
#

i’m running the LEDs continuously while i’m nearby to see if i have any issues

#

the resistors are warm to the touch, but nothing crazy

topaz veldt
#

you won't have issues there

young void
#

They can last forever xD ive seen some super old ones

topaz veldt
#

You're likely using 1/4-1/2W

devout ridge
#

bit hard to tell without a size reference, but i believe they are 1/4w

topaz veldt
#

you need the spec sheet

#

12v w/ 470 ohm should be on a 1/2w probably

#

1/4w will work for a long time

pure garnet
#

@merry stirrup my buddy offered to trade me his 5800x3d/board/ram/3080 for my 7800x3d/mpower/a die

topaz veldt
#

lol

young void
pure garnet
#

ddr5 prices cooked

topaz veldt
topaz veldt
#

wattage is size alone

devout ridge
#

Yeah they're 1/4w

young void
#

Just dropping for future refs ❤️

topaz veldt
#

Back in the day I ran low imedence (low ohm) fuel injectoirs on an ECU that needed high ohm. I had to use these ridiculous resistors to simulate the load

young void
#

If it works

devout ridge
#

Yeah the resistor should be seeing about .3w, so a bit above what the resistors are rated for

topaz veldt
devout ridge
#

Not really a big concern for this little mockup, it was more so a proof of concept

topaz veldt
#

if you leave the legs long on through hole resistors you can let them hit a housing/etc.

#

yah

devout ridge
#

For 1/4w i should be running at least 560ohm

#

That pushes it to .257w

topaz veldt
#

yeah they will be like slightly dimmer

young void
#

Lil heatsink for it

cosmic gazelle
#

alright man i’ll set trfc to auto damn

topaz veldt
#

really you target the resistor around the milli-amp rating of the diode

cosmic gazelle
#

stupidass memory

devout ridge
#

20mA LEDs

#

600ohm would actually be what's expected

#

I'm running them at quite a bit higher amperage than they're rated

topaz veldt
#

are they on constantly

devout ridge
#

Have been for about 15 minutes now

topaz veldt
#

i mean by design

devout ridge
#

Honestly i'm just messing about with it, there is no real design

topaz veldt
#

yup

devout ridge
#

Ideally i would be able to run them continuously though

topaz veldt
#

its all about duty cycle

warm urchin
#

heh, doody cycle

topaz veldt
#

if the led is lit 50% of the time the you can get away with higher current

#

20%, even more, etc.

devout ridge
#

Is the issue heat? the LEDs themselves aren't even warm

topaz veldt
#

yes the diode breaks down

devout ridge
#

The diode underneath the little plastic cover

topaz veldt
#

inside the little bulb

devout ridge
#

yeah

topaz veldt
#

they basically have low/no resistance so you feed them current and they just eat it

#

until they thermally self destruct

devout ridge
#

The little relays i'm using are rated for 12v 3A, so they would indeed cook the LEDs if left without a resistor

topaz veldt
#

well no that just means the relay is rated for 3A

#

it doesn't supply 3A

#

it supports a load of 3A

devout ridge
#

So it's that above 3a bad things happen, not that above 3a can never happen

topaz veldt
#

oh yeah if you put a 12v battery in line with a 12AWG cable and involve that resistor to say a car headlight bulb, the relay will melt

devout ridge
#

Good to know

topaz veldt
#

and most people use relays as switches

#

so the duty cycle is high

devout ridge
#

Yeah it's a little wireless relay with a remote

topaz veldt
#

There are cases where you can cheat if you are pulsing a relay (almost like a transistor)

#

@devout ridge is it a mechanical relay

devout ridge
topaz veldt
#

little tiny jawn

devout ridge
#

Yeah, those little PCBs in the background

topaz veldt
#

yeah those are solid state

devout ridge
#

Each board is a single relay, running it so i can control each LED separately

topaz veldt
#

That is the actually switching device

#

since its dc to dc it might actually just be a transistor

#

and them calling it a "relay board" or something

devout ridge

teal orbit
muted matrix
#

yea i know its 'possible' with latest zfs BUT i wont try it on my critical stuff heh

#

zfs guys, we like being complicated and over the top

teal orbit
#

It works but old files will use the old parity ratio and take up more space, and also the free space accounting will be wrong (but still converge to zero at least)

muted matrix
#

the thing that drives me bonkers in proxmox is the non uniform use of GiB vs GB

devout ridge

it came out a couple months ago now iirc

muted matrix

teal orbit
#

A couple months is brand new

#

that thing took years to implement it seems

muted matrix
#

that does bring me to a good point to consider. even if i was literally given a complete replacement of my array with 2x dense drives. how would i cleanly work into it? i can't add it. i'd have to replace

#

i have a 7 wide 2 deep raidz2

#

all 960gb sas ssds

teal orbit
muted matrix
#

but...i could step into it, but i figure i want the path of least resistance. would it be a resilver?

teal orbit
#

You can replace all the drives with larger ones to get more space, that works already

muted matrix
#

like upgrade half, resilver, upgrade other half, resilver, then fully new drives on vdev?

teal orbit
#

2 deep.. is that like each of the 7 vdevs being a mirror of two drives?

muted matrix
#

i have backups im u ltra paranoid

#

yeah..

devout ridge
#

wait what

teal orbit
#

Interesting

devout ridge
#

it’s not two vdevs, 7 wide in raidz2?

muted matrix
teal orbit
muted matrix
#

did i say it wrong

devout ridge
#

oh so it is the thing i said

teal orbit
#

Yeah

devout ridge
#

no you said it right, people just often times don’t say it like that

#

they usually just say “2 vdevs” instead of 2 deep, even though both are correct ways of saying it

muted matrix
#

myb. so yeah 14 drives 960gb, i have 1.84tb usable

#

i did it this way to have more failure potential per vdev

teal orbit
#

Huh I should think you have a little more than 1.84T usable

muted matrix
#

oh wait hold on lol

#

that was my sas hdd array. about 11.84tb usable lol

#

sas ssd is

#

that is the one that's 1.84tb available after all the zfs overhead

teal orbit
#

Hold on how does the zfs structure work, is it a stripe of two mirrors?

muted matrix
#

yes, you cant do it this way though in the ui

#

it shows up in ui correct after but gotta use cl

#

so i can lose complete mirror 0 or mirror 1

#

but other pools i am just a 2 disk mirror

#

so i just double my resiliency at the expense of space

#

the spare is kinda a waste, it really only does something IF the array is marked bad. but i had 5 and really didnt have a use for it

#

ideally i would immediately take action if i got a notification

topaz veldt
#

that config above is "raid 10"

#

oh wait, yeah no that setup is ... not ideal

wait no its not, thats ordinary

random flame
# rigid veldt Bit of mine craft maybe rblx idk

Oh yeah, a recommendation for optimization mods for Minecraft to try:

  • Concurrent Chunk Management Engine (C2ME)
  • Lithium
  • Fast IP Ping
  • Very Many Players
  • Structure Layout Optimizer
  • Krypton
  • XXL Packets
  • ImmediatelyFast
  • FerriteCore
  • EntityCulling
  • And either Sodium or VulkanMod.
random flame
# rigid veldt Okay thanks

I also recommend using Prism Launcher for managing the game, different versions, modpacks, and more since it would make things way easier to do too. Can even let you get mrpack modpacks from Modrinth without needing their app and such too.
