cosmic gazelle
#

to be fair if i’m benchmarking for my own fun i like knowing that if i wanted to actually game in the system, it would be stable

shell void
#

there is no definitive best because they both have significant pros and cons

pure garnet
#

not my thing personally

hoary hatch
#

Generally it seems like QD-OLEDs offer better value but as Michael said, pros and cons to both technologies

#

So im bsing with grok right

#

Lmao its always a joy

#

Jokes aside was a decent look at recent AI development, coming alongg

shell void
# fleet marsh ok like for instance. i found this. and idk if its good or not lol https://www.a...

the important points are

QD-OLED Pros: panel uniformity, pure color, and infinite viewing angles
Cons: washes out and turns magenta when room light hits the screen

W-OLED Pros: more normal subpixel layout, and doesnt wash out
Cons: less HDR color volume, and worse panel uniformity

as for brands i would stick to Asus, MSI, or Gigabyte if possible because they have the best firmware, and the most calibration controls in the OSD

#

i personally prefer W-OLED because the contrast loss and magenta tint on QD-OLED annoys me, but a lot of people rightfully love the tech

fleet marsh
#

ok i was trying to stay away from the $500 plus range. but if its worth to go with a name brand, then ill go that route

fleet marsh
shell void
#

yes it happens when ambient light hits the screen

#

if youre usually playing in a dim room then QD-OLED is a nobrainer

fleet marsh
#

ahh. my room stays dark most of the time

shell void
#

not bad in that photo tbh

#

it's a lot worse in my environment

young void
#

Ill get a dramatic image

topaz veldt
#

Wrong. Old as shit.

shell void
#

but nevertheless they said that they spend most of their time in a dim room so QD-OLED is the obvious choice

Ehh I think it's a waste of time to just call something microslop and move on. Every time I go to reddit for a discussion on something windows related, half the comments are "I already switched to linux lols microslop" and the other half are distro recommendations. It's like people that are soo attached to their ex and cannot leave for some reason.

What does it add to the discussion on the topic? You saying microslop in a flight simulator server does not add anything to the conversation for people that are genuinely trying to discuss about the product or discuss about planes.

It neither adds to, nor subtracts, but rather humorously pokes fun at a shitty corp

#

Man life sucks

#

My whole world is rocked.

#

My laptop turned out to be defective. And this is the 3rd defective laptop in a row and now parents not letting me return this one as they are sick, and calling me stupid etc.

#

So basically first one kept crashing and WiFi and Bluetooth had issues. Second one was begging very hot, abnormal for that model and severe throttling.

#

Now this is crashing second I put it under OCCT. 10 seconds in, it freezes up. Only OCCT combined CPU + GPU. but not in other tests.

#

How is this even possible 3 unrelated laptops in a row being like this. This is unacceptable. Something is seriously wrong with QC in my region

#

anyone maybe offer any insight, I’m very confused rn.

trim agate
urban minnow
#

I will try. But I seriously doubt it

trim agate
#

What model is it?

urban minnow

ASUS TUF A16

#

I think it’s a motherboard defect

trim agate
#

lol could’ve guessed it was asus

urban minnow
#

Since it does in OCCT, can’t handle the spiky power load

trim agate
#

@brisk jolt another asus fuck up

urban minnow
#

And other units don’t do this, only mine so obviously a hardware error.

indigo walrus
urban minnow
#

I’m sick of ASUS, it sucks.

trim agate
#

^ I’m not educated enough to troubleshoot in this field, sorry

urban minnow
#

I have a pc, I’m gonna use that. I’m done with this. 3 laptops in a row it’s defective.

indigo walrus
# urban minnow Yes but I lost trust in it. And I’m having issues with my parents not understand...

Then the laptop is fine. OCCT is designed to push hardware to the maximum. Not all hardware can handle this. If the laptop runs fine doing normal things, as a normal user would expect, it's working as intended. 🤷

indigo walrus

Welp, that leaves you with the following options:

  1. spend time replacing laptops until you get one that doesn't crash under unrealistic loads
  2. return the laptop and return to monke using a desktop computer for your computing
  3. keep the laptop, accepting that different hardware production runs have differing results
What you choose to do is entirely up to you. No judgement, of course. Some things are just not worth your time.

will an RTX 3050 work in an OEM, it’s my dads unused Office pc he gave me.

trim agate

i5 14500 and a 3050 with a 260w PSU

urban minnow

is the i5 the issue?

#

I think it’s 300w or something, or 260w.

trim agate
#

Idk sounds like you’re pushing a limit to me but again I’m no expert I’m just talking out of my ass

urban minnow
#

But it’s 260 I think.

#

It does have a GPU in it already

#

but prob I think it could cuase a problem

#

so honestly I’m just gonna take my dads advice and make money in the summer and build a pc

#

Cuz he suggested, cuz he knows I’ve always wanted one.

trim agate

If he’s offering you a free office pc i’d just take it’s and use it

Right.

dry tide

Thanks 😄

old juniper
#

There is good reason that Steam automatically prefers file transfers between PCs on the same network 🙂

dry tide
#

If only I had multiple computers 🤣

old juniper
#

In my case the upload on my older PC was a little slower than the download on my fiber link so downloading from Steam was actually faster

#

"Sneaker Net" is even quicker. I bet you that for large data (or rather, a surprisingly small amount of data), copying to a fast thunderbolt drive / SSD and then walking to the other PC and plugging it in will be an order of magnitude faster than your network link 🙂

#

Never underestimate the bandwidth of a station wagon full of tapes hurtling down the highway lol

dry tide
#

But you lose perfomance on an external don't you?

old juniper

That's a depends (mostly on the link speed of the thing you're plugging in and what you're comparing it to). You could also just use an NVMe slot at both ends instead

he is using beta branch on w11 and its still bad. meanwhile linux is stuck in last year

they are all pretty bad options lol .. b70's bad drivers / optimization, and dual GPU configs on AMD or Nvidia.

oo. and your dual 1080 is working? hows utilization

green marsh

with Qwen3.5-35B-A3B, 115k context length, in claude code it averages out at ~400-500t/s prompt processing and ~20t/s token generation. it is the IQ4_NL quant from unsloth, so it all fits in the GPU VRAM

#

but this is llamacpp, as vllm doesn't support such old GPUs

wicked kestrel

that actually sound pretty good. do they have a 16gb 5060? or is that Ti only

topaz veldt
#

You can't have two PCs with 256GB of RAM and a GPU and it show up as one PC with 512GB of RAM and 2 GPUs

cosmic gazelle
topaz veldt
#

You can do distributed LLMs across nodes, but thats different

merry stirrup
#

yeah, but a lot more than 100s

cosmic gazelle
#

well to be fair you make it sound like you aren’t a very large SI so idk

devout ridge
#

Or would it basically just be you run one LLM on one machine, and an entirely separate LLM on the other

topaz veldt
odd sable
#

there are ways to split up a single LLM across multiple machines

#

in general though, dont

topaz veldt
#

For testing only

#

Without NVLINK performance is like single digit tokens per second

devout ridge
#

And that would be with like 100gbe networking, not just a measily 25gbe

odd sable
#

nvlink specifically isn't strictly required, but RDMA yes

odd sable
odd sable
#

RDMA (via nvlink, infiniband, or RoCE) has much much lower latency too

topaz veldt
#

Its "parallelism" or pipeline parallelism

devout ridge
#

Got it, so i'm far better off just cramming as much GPU compute (and VRAM) into a single node as possible

odd sable
#

yes

topaz veldt
devout ridge
#

I was hoping i could save money by buying more, but cheaper GPUs and having them in separate nodes, but it sounds like that just isn't a good idea in any way

topaz veldt
#

Nope

devout ridge
#

Good to know, appreciated as always Rogue and 5nail

odd sable
#

FWIW, if you are just doing inference, you can use many GPUs in a single node fairly easily

topaz veldt
#

many gpus in node is easy

odd sable
#

it wont increase the throughput for a single user, but it can let you use lower vram cards

topaz veldt
#

but he wants many nodes single model

odd sable
#

note: i mean many w/o nvlink across them

devout ridge
odd sable
#

inference doesn't need high bandwidth between nodes like training does

topaz veldt
devout ridge
#

Is PCIe 3.0x16 a problem for inferencing?

odd sable
#

for inference PCIe 3.0 is fine

topaz veldt
#

its a problem for compatibility

odd sable
#

how?

topaz veldt
#

Many GPUs will not function

devout ridge
#

The plan was to run 3 P100's per R740xd

topaz veldt
#

You can run P100s

devout ridge
#

48gb aggregate VRAM

odd sable
topaz veldt
#

The bifurcation and shit on Dell/HPE/etc. is a pain in the ass and firmware locked/etc.

devout ridge
#

So is the issue running PCIe 4.0x16 gpus in a pcie3.0x16 slot?

odd sable
#

ive run dumb shit in a dell server before just fine, at most idrac complains, but it'll work

devout ridge
#

Or is it running 4.0x8 in a 3.0x16 slot

topaz veldt
odd sable
#

"idrac complains" the fans ramp them up

topaz veldt
#

There's more to "idrac complains" in dell w/ GPUs

devout ridge
#

Speaking of Dell and GPUs, what do i need to run many GPUs in a R740xd, like i can get a model with dual 1100w PSUs, is there anything else i need to look for?
