If your on about my screenshot then it's my new s23 ultra

pure garnet
#

how much would it usually use then

merry stirrup
#

nah i was pissed

#

it’s an irl homie too so like i was mad fr at him

topaz veldt
pure garnet
#

one of my college classes involved disassembling and reassembling a normal optiplex tower and when i opened the one i had been assigned the ram fell out of where the hard drive goes

merry stirrup
#

LOL

topaz veldt
#

@pure garnet my arista switch has like dual 750W PSUs but uses like 150W with 24 ports

pure garnet
#

since it was just an empty box with no cable management i’m pretty sure i had my group out of there in like 20 minutes

merry stirrup
#

we built a couple of pcs in hs but i really think i was just helping my comp sci teacher put computers together to sell

pure garnet
topaz veldt
pure garnet
#

during class too

#

i had no work to do so i was across the hall setting up computers with no supervision

merry stirrup
#

lmao

#

i have basically told him that

#

he shouldn’t put loose pc parts inside a case and that if he needs boxes to hit me up

#

bros a safe individual although that’s a pretty good chip

#

type in 59 in the box, 1.36v and let it ride

topaz veldt
#

what SP is it

merry stirrup
#

idk they don’t say

topaz veldt
#

@edgy laurel this is cool

merry stirrup
#

i’ve gotta upgrade my lan if i get the storage server from work

#

well i don’t have to but if i don’t have to spend money on drives id like to

topaz veldt
#

I was going to get fancy with jamming my 10/25 Gbps NICs in with vertical mount GPU

#

but now that 5 gbps works... thats good enough

merry stirrup
#

yeah my board has 5gbit but rest of my lan is 2.5gbit

#

which i don’t think that 3 hdds are going to go much much faster than that but

#

i have a pretty decent sized cache so it ends up helping anyways

topaz veldt
#

raid 5 can read at almost 3x disk speed, ish

merry stirrup
#

i’m in z1

#

idk how the speeds work out for that

topaz veldt
#

yeah

merry stirrup
#

same thing ?

topaz veldt
#

in your case its like 2-3 disk read speed

merry stirrup
#

probably 2 cause the third is parity

devout ridge
#

assuming no cpu bottleneck, it should be the equivalent speed of how many non-parity drives you have

merry stirrup
#

i do not have a cpu bottleneck

#

so probably at most like 400-550mbyte

devout ridge
#

in a 4 drive 1 parity setup, you’ll see roughly the speed of 4 drives, 2 drives 1 parity, you see the speed of 2 drives

merry stirrup
#

yeah i only run 3 drives total atm

#

i may increase that amount but for what i do i just want big dense guys

#

but if i get the old VBR i can’t complain about it

#

i think it’s a bunch of 1.8TB sas drives of sorts

devout ridge
#

i’m running 24 SAS drives rn

merry stirrup
#

i just can’t have that much extra power in the room rn

#

i’m gonna move the server downstairs here soon but it just gets too hot in my room if i leave 3 pcs running

devout ridge
#

i have a separate room

merry stirrup
#

esp with my actual desktop basically not believing in idle

devout ridge
#

idc what temp the room is

merry stirrup
#

yeah that will soon be the setup

merry stirrup
#

as of now it’s all in my room so i want to keep drive count down for noise and heat reasons

#

cause even 3 hdds is just annoying to listen to

#

i literally know when someone logs on to jellyfin because of them

topaz veldt

Sooo is there such a thing as HDMI to USB-C

I want to go HDMI -> USB-C

came across this on my Edge browser. should Enable this feature to block any website from accessing local devices?

#

There's: Default, Enabled, Enabled (Blocking), and Disabled

lethal topaz
#

interesting

indigo walrus
#

It's useful for certain sites, like HP / Dell / Intel's driver updater sites. To my knowledge, the way these sites "scan your computer" for drivers is by sending requests to the corresponding agent running on your machine. Kind of neat.

molten iron
#

i don't use those, i custom built my pc and i downloaded all drivers i need from my motherboard's website

#

i'd rather websites NOT try and talk to other devices on my network

#

idk it just seems super sus

indigo walrus
edgy laurel
#

this stuff is always enabled by default, just leave it as is

molten iron
#

i guess i can leave it on default. I guess i'm confused at the difference between Enabled (Blocking) and disabled lol

indigo walrus
edgy laurel
#

"Checks" are enabled, which indicates blocked by default

molten iron
#

i'm sorry, i guess i'm confused at the wording. So the check feature is enabled and runs, but it automatically gets blocked by default?

edgy laurel
#

yes. the site Kirashi linked has a simple test

#

I get the same popup

I’m trying to jump two pins on my psu to see if it’s dead or not. It’s a thermaltake unit. How can I know what pins to jump?

#

Trying to find a pinout diagram online but I’m not having any luck

edgy laurel
#

google is pretty useful sometimes

molten iron
#

I'm a slow learner.

From what I understand, keeping this setting as DEFAULT will have the pop ups appear on websites that request access to other apps and services where you can say yes or no. Putting it to Enabled (blocking) will have the same pop ups but it would default to Block instead of Allow (I still don't understand it). Setting it to Disable blocks the ability outright to check the local network?

I'm seeing things from Microsoft where the Local Network Access Restrictions are obsolete and won't work after Edge version 144 (i'm on 145)

I'm wondering if this is just a big waste of time

topaz veldt
#

So fun fact

#

X870E Apex and Z890 Apex have the 5 Gbps Realtek shit

#

but when left to auto negotiate, at least earlier today, it only auto'd to 2500 Mbps

#

Turns out you need this

#

Windows detects these NICs auto but puts this shit

#

which has no idea wtf 5.0 Gbps is

#

When you have the right shit it goes from "Realtek PCIe Ethernet" to

#

5 GbE

#

So don't worry - you don't have to start pricing out CAT7-8 bulk wire and rerunning 30 runs in your house lol

edgy laurel
#

what NICs are these?

topaz veldt
edgy laurel
#

oh, built in?

topaz veldt
#

brisk jolt
#

oh- Im getting the wifi 7 version so that should be able to?

topaz veldt
#

I am very confused - are you talking wireless or wired

brisk jolt
#

Wired but one of the wireless mesh i plan on doing wired to the PC

indigo walrus
# brisk jolt Wired but one of the wireless mesh i plan on doing wired to the PC

You'll be limited by whatever the lowest common denominator is. In this case, that'll be the wireless backhaul. Just because a WiFi mesh unit has wired ethernet ports does not automagically mean you'll receive 10Gbps, 5Gbps, 2.5Gbps, or even 1Gbps through those ports if the mesh unit is using WiFi for its backhaul...

topaz veldt
#

Right so what I am trying to say is wired, you need a switch that does 2.5 / 5 Gbps, if it does 10 Gbps that's nice but 10 Gbps switches from yesteryear "cheap on market place" are 10 Gbps ONLY

brisk jolt
indigo walrus
#

Even placed close together, you won't see 10Gbps speeds, nor 5Gbps speeds. You might achieve 2.5Gbps speeds, but mesh units with backhauls with those capacities are not cheap. WiFi is and always will be for convenience; Wired it and always will be for top speed and reliability. https://www.wiisfi.com/#PHY

topaz veldt

What's an example of 10 Gbps stuff cheaper than 2.5 Gbps?

Also, this would be very important to read up on. 😄 Their claim of "21Gbps" is complete marketing bullshit.

21 Gbps Tri-Band WiFi 7: 10-stream tri-band WiFi enables gaming, 4K/8K streaming, AR/VR, and high-speed downloading on multiple devices—all at the same time.*
Yeah, okay, sure, if you were to somehow find a magical device capable of simultaneously using every frequency...

topaz veldt
#

I just don't understand what we're transferring at 10 Gbps

brisk jolt

brisk jolt
#

thing is I cant connect them with another ethernet cable because there’d be a door in the way

trim agate
#

feel like the best way would be to use a long wire if you want to get 5gbps

brisk jolt
#

heres the thing- I literally cant

trim agate
#

your next best bet would be the wireless backhaul, not ideal

#

but it works sorta

brisk jolt
#

which is what i was thinking

trim agate
#

or drill a hole and add a connector

#

which i dont think sounds like an option

brisk jolt
#

I was planning on one mesh connected to the ONR being placed as close to the outside of the room as possible, and the other is placed at the door

brisk jolt
#

unless its at the top then sure, but im not allowed to do any holes

#

my general idea is to just get some form of ethernet

indigo walrus
#

I may have missed the plot, but I have to ask... "why 5Gbps"? If this is one of those "I have the hardware so I must make use of it!" situations... I get it, but sometimes the juice isn't worth the squeeze.

brisk jolt
#

in case you want to say powerline, nah

topaz veldt
#

trim agate
#

i was told i have 5gbps full duplex unfortunately i have cat5e in my walls

brisk jolt
trim agate
#

negotiates at 10g tho :(

whole coral
#

So you either need to downgrade the internet connection or rip all of the cords out and go CAT6a

brisk jolt
#

The mpower gets like… 100 megabytes max on a good day, normally 80
The ITX gets like 40 megabytes/s for whatever reason

And for other devices like my tablet and phone, the wifi is godawful in stability and speed

whole coral
#

CAT6a is 10 gigabit Ethernet but longer distance ofc

#

Would be overall better

brisk jolt
#

Powerline isnt an option- Ive heard that it just sucks in both older and newer flats

either something is good at release or not

#

50 series were rumoured to be 💥 but only thing that turned out okay was rtx 5090 and pro 6000

#

drawing much more powah than 4090 and costing +$400 msrp

shell void
#

people are going to whine even louder when the 60 series pushes wattage higher again

south shuttle
topaz veldt
#

I am eyeing up the 2800W Superflower

shell void
#

node shrink = more transistors = more power density = more wattage at equivalent voltage

south shuttle
#

the contacts physically aren’t rated each for such high wattages

shell void
#

so the only two outcomes are that nvidia lowers the voltage target (theyve been using 1.1v for a decade or more) or the wattage goes up again

south shuttle
#

i mean it would be funny if nvidia instead of giving tolerance headroom would go into the negatives and overload the connector

topaz veldt
#

I am regularly pulling 700W+ over 12vhpwr

brisk jolt
#

im probably eying on either a seasonic or a bequiet unit closer to 2000w next from this lianli 1000w psu

shell void
#

watercooled U9 495K and 6090 will be able to overdraw a 120v 15a circuit based on napkin math and rumors

south shuttle
#

excellent for consumers having to upgrade their psu every few years just to keep up with nvidia requirements

#

even if you have a fat wattage unit

shell void
#

i mean theyre not doing anything wrong man

#

like i said theyve been using the same 1.1v target for at least a decade if not more (1080Ti -> 5090)

#

power density just goes up as we cram more SMs

topaz veldt
#

Also the people buying 6090s will give zero fucks about upgrading a PSU

brisk jolt
shell void
#

yeah itll be interesting to see where that lands

#

it sucks that we're limited by how Nvidia shapes the default VF curve and the offset limits though

#

the lowest you can go on 5090 is ~870mv without nuking clocks, but it would be more efficient at ~815mv if they let us

brisk jolt
#

Imagine if it gets another efficiency jump like from 30>40 series

south shuttle
#

when it’s in a 10-15 year warranty

shell void
#

if you bought a $400 PSU then it's probably 1600W and there's no room for you to upgrade on 120v

shell void
#

even $200 is probably 1.0-1.2KW which is fine for anything except combining a 6090 and 52 core nova lake cpu

brisk jolt
#

all these game options and I choose for a VN and watching my friend’s stream on my other monitor pepoJuice

brisk jolt
#

Holy shit…. Reading is fucking hard

shell void
#

okay it looks like nvidia dropped the vcore limit from 1.2v on the 980ti to 1.1v on the 1080ti, and it's stayed there ever since

#

it's possible that theyll drop it to 1.0v or something on 60 series to keep wattage in check

No that makes no sense and is not anywhere near the argument. If the RTX 6000 Pro was $4500 and a significant performance increase over the $3500-4000 5090 I am arguing that people WOULD get it even if it meant spending for a new PSU because that's literally of zero concern when an entire system is costing $8000-10,000.
