turbid locust
#

Atheists be like

cosmic gazelle
#

yo mac

#

do you just use karhu for memory stability or do you use a whole suite of things

turbid locust
#

Karhu is my primary one, if it passes 12 hours of Karhu it’s probably stable enough to daily? But if I want to be very sure I do Karhu, Ycruncher VT3, and Linpack

#

Well, I really only use Linpack on AM5 to test FCLK stability

#

So basically Karhu and Ycruncher VT3

cosmic gazelle
#

I don't necessarily expect you to know this off the top of your head but is Ycruncher a power virus on haswell

#

i'm trying to avoid using stuff that's gonna fry my shit

turbid locust
#

Ycruncher is a very heavy cpu load

#

arguably the hardest you can hit a cpu

cosmic gazelle
#

hmm

pure garnet
#

prime 95 small ffts is what i'd avoid then

#

ycruncher vt3 is good for memory but not as hard on the cpu

cosmic gazelle
#

well people say if you manually set voltage and turn off adaptive, you're probably fine, but that it can cause immediate super high temp spikes because of the shitty tim

#

but if you have voltage on auto avx can fry your shit because haswell increases voltage to accomodate avx

pure garnet
#

i delidded a 6700k and shoved nt-h2 under the ihs as a temporary fix and it helped temps

#

so maybe consider just cracking the lid anyway

turbid locust
#

Are they not soldered

cosmic gazelle
#

haswell isn't

pure garnet
#

pretty sure ivy was last soldered till 9th?

pure garnet
cosmic gazelle

some people say you can just use the bracket to hold the ihs on without actually siliconing it back to the pcb- is that true

pure garnet

yeah i literally have mine held in by gravity

cosmic gazelle

okay

#

delidders online are really cheap so maybe i'll do that after i try to find the max without it

turbid locust
#

You could probably 3D print one if you have a printer

cosmic gazelle
#

i don't unfortunately

#

but metal ones are 12 bucks

pure garnet
#

they're a couple bucks on aliex anyway

cosmic gazelle
#

also is liquid metal and nail polish kind of expected or can you just replace the thermal paste

#

liquid metal kinda scares me

pure garnet

i just have paste under my grandmas

cosmic gazelle

pure garnet

it's suboptimal but functional

cosmic gazelle

i would honestly rather just do paste than risk cooking my chip from spilling something i've literally never handled before

turbid locust

@pure garnet old forum posts say you only really use 2t on ddr3 if you're 1. on bulldozer or 2. using 4 sticks, and i am neither, so that answers my question

turbid locust

why don't you start with a cmos reset before things failing

cosmic gazelle

oh well theres no way in hell that thing is dead

edgy laurel

I think more beginners should be required to watch Greg Salazar's Fix or Flop series. I think they're just entertaining but I also firmly believe that a few episodes of that (since hes always working on the same no boot issue) that people will get an idea how to work on a basic no post issue.

no no, all custom

#

If you can find me an example I'll check it out

edgy laurel
#

not 5090, but we've shown Optimum's builds before with 4090's

topaz veldt
#

the prob is there are no more pump/block combos

edgy laurel
topaz veldt
#

I have an extra 5090 TUF OC block, fans, tubing, fittings, and AM5 waterblock(s), but theres no decent res/pump combo

edgy laurel
#

res-less.

#

just.. lots of painful bleeding

cosmic gazelle
topaz veldt
#

There is zero chance that's adequately cooling a 9950X3D and 5090

edgy laurel
#

i gotta find the one where he's got 3 240's in there somehow

#

he's done a number of these. that one was very, very custom.

topaz veldt
#

Like I said I know I can jam parts in, but I don't feel confident that those are going to support 700W of heat

cosmic gazelle
#

i just want to put my hand next to the exhaust of one of those builds, it has to be so incredibly hot

topaz veldt
#

The front is on the left - the rear is intake

cosmic gazelle
#

my rear exhaust during gaming i would just describe as “feels like a space heater on low”

topaz veldt
#

all the fans are "backwards"

cosmic gazelle
#

and i thought the build im doing was compact lol

topaz veldt
#

That's now a 9950X3D w/ 5090 TUF OC

cosmic gazelle
#

to be fair the case i’m using only has 1x120mm and 1x80mm fan slots and the rest of it is solid

#

so i may have used an arctic server rack fan for the 80mm to hedge my bets

#

😭

cosmic gazelle
# topaz veldt

is this case made specifically around the d15? seems too close to be coincidence

cosmic gazelle
#

or is the d15 just a common tower height

topaz veldt
#

its just "large air cooler" height

cosmic gazelle
#

how long does a build like that take to assemble properly

topaz veldt
#

not too long honestly

#

there's a couple of "ah shit, that had to go in first..." type things

cosmic gazelle
#

some day when i convince my future wife to let me build her a pc she won’t use ill do an extreme sff build

topaz veldt
#

I have a fractal terra which is a good amount smaller, but it can't fit anything but an FE, and then on the CPU side you need a like 55-60mm low profile cooler

#

so a 9800X3D / 5090 FE would be OK, but still prob have to limit the 9800X3D

edgy laurel
#

that thing was the key to going small.

#

does anything like that exist for 5090?

topaz veldt
#

no

#

Even the TG cooler which has the ports at the rear is still huge

edgy laurel
#

hmm

topaz veldt

see how much it sticks out vs the PCIe slot plate

topaz veldt
cosmic gazelle
#

oh ya the one i’m doing is 18.6 with microatx which is pretty impressive imo

edgy laurel
topaz veldt
#

ok 18.9L

cosmic gazelle
#

it’s a shitty case but it was the best for my specific scenario

#

i would have done a silverstone gd09 htpc setup but those are basically vaporware

topaz veldt
#

I came up with a trick way to get the "backside" NVMe cooler...

#

that back port on this mobo is PCIe 5.0 x4

#

but yeah @edgy laurel my prob is fitting a block on any reasonably available 5090, and then I have to either pretend a 240/280mm single rad will cool 600W + CPU

#

or not lol

#

That said I swapped the 9850X3D for the 9950X3D this afternoon in about 30 mins, which is hell of a lot nicer to deal with

In fact many server boards/etc. do not have as many VRM stages as enthusiast boards

close enough to 50 lol

topaz veldt

Thats not massive, though

Its all in accordance to what is being controlled

when you have a TR with 64-96 cores with 32 stages that is not massive

merry stirrup
#

if you cant figure out how to oc gpus respectfully you need to dedicate more time to playing with things for oc

cosmic gazelle
#

no like specifically getting around the gpu boost clocking down by itself

merry stirrup
#

you just have to work with that if youre not going to physically mod the card

cosmic gazelle
#

it won’t go above 2k regardless of what i do

merry stirrup
#

gpu boost clocking down by itself implies some form of limit

cosmic gazelle

i would presume power

merry stirrup

address the limit somehow, if its power try undervolting slightly so it can hit your target freq, if its cooling you know what to do, if its volts youre boned until you mod the card

brisk jolt
#

quite literally the main thing about GPU OC would just be to slam the power limit

power limit then drag slider hope stable
