merry stirrup

but in summary. there is people who won’t even take a photo to make money

lucid gate
#

This is actually a great sales strategy if you know the buyer is serious. Someone did that to me on a 3080 ti for about $250 USD and I went for it.

devout ridge
#

"no low balls, i know what i have" type beat

lucid gate
#

It works fine

merry stirrup
devout ridge
#

it takes max 20 minutes to record a video of the GPU working, likely far less

merry stirrup
#

there was 2 other 1080s on fbm near me but they just wouldn’t respond so i basically was forced to go with that one

#

literally the guy was just an asshole. he didn’t want to take out whatever card he upgraded to for 5 minutes

#

to make 200$

frank cypress
#

lmao that' scrazy

merry stirrup
#

the card was fine in the end but the guy was not a cool seller

#

he got 1 star on communication

frank cypress
#

i regularly go out of my way to make sure to send proof of the card working before i try to sell shit even if they don't ask for it

pallid marsh
#

Ask him to discord call and show it in person

merry stirrup
#

i legit would’ve been fine with a photo from 2017 of the card

#

i asked for any proof that it worked and he refused full stop

turbid locust

Bro I love when streamers are like “I’m not even gonna TRY to pronounce that name” and it’s just some shit like Michael

brave panther
#

ram prices are so damn high due to these scammers btw

merry stirrup
#

yeah lots of the oc community is partaking unfortunately

#

a lot of the cheaper 6000 c30 kits yknow the normie kits are actually 4800 kits with programmed XMP’s

frank cypress
#

lmao?

merry stirrup
#

and unfortunately a lot of the people in the oc community have a very lax consideration of stable

#

so very well someone has an unstable pre programmed xmp on a generic hynix kit

#

they are hynix dimms and they are otherwise fine but yeah manually programmed xmp

merry stirrup

my 7000 sticks have a reprogrammed xmp lol

turbid locust

Imagine ram but it has XMPs for every platform sweet spot lmao

#

That’s my goal

merry stirrup
#

life if ram was good

turbid locust
#

Like I would program my H26A greenies with a 6000, 8000, and probably 8600 profile

frank cypress
#

mac how much did you pay for the 6000cl26 godbins again?

turbid locust
#

$189 which I thought was expensive at the time and felt bad for spending that much on ram LMAO

merry stirrup
#

if only he knew

frank cypress
#

yeah i was just thinking about it, that's probably way cheaper than what even shit kits are going for now

turbid locust
#

Yeah I don’t think 32GB ram kits exist under $250 now

merry stirrup
#

to be fair a base hynix kit was 90$ at the time

merry stirrup
frank cypress
#

if it makes you feel any better, in late 2024, i sold a kit of 4x16gb 5600cl36 for $150 cad

turbid locust
#

I paid $65 for my H16A greenies

merry stirrup
#

i STOLE my hynix greenies

frank cypress
merry stirrup

yeah

#

(i gave them back tho fr lol)

turbid locust
merry stirrup

just took them for like 3 months

#

shoulda kept it for clocking

frank cypress

i don't think anyone expected the shortage

turbid locust
frank cypress
#

man i wish i kept that kit, cause that shit probably 4x from then to today

frank cypress

homie sales are real

turbid locust

It was the flare x5 kit that came with the 7700x bundle

frank cypress

devout ridge
#

@topaz veldt do you know if you can freely swap drives in netapp caddies, or do you need to get new caddies?

#

the reason i ask is they do have an interpolator

topaz veldt
devout ridge
#

i didn't know if they were vendor locked

#

the JBOD i have came with 4 600Gb drives, and 20 1.2tb drives, so i was looking at replacing those 4 600gb drives with 1.2tb ones

#

just curious if i could buy just the drives and swap em out, or if i had to get ones with the interposers

NETAPP DS2246 for reference, i believe you mentioned having something quite similar

2.5in SAS drives

brave panther

yea those are undesirable for homelabbers as most want to run 3.5 inch drives

devout ridge

True, but also worth more than i paid given the number of them

they're like 18usd per drive on ebay, and the jbod alone is worth 160usd, so i'd say i got a pretty good bargain

Is this much pump out normal for PTM 7950? Finding info about this stuff is hard lol.

edgy laurel
#

what problem are you trying to solve

#

because this sounds like someone worrying about "bottlenecks" without knowing what it even means

analog plover
#

The problem I’m currently solving isn’t exactly related to my question. This just seems like excessive pump out, especially in the short term. This application is only a few months old.

#

I was just test fitting a larger cooler and noticed the wild pump out

edgy laurel
#

So you don't actually have a problem and attributing what may just be normal physics of when you squish something between two pieces of metal as this term "pump out" you heard somewhere

#

were you actually noticing performance degradation?

#

I think you've created a problem in your head and you should just use the PC 👍

analog plover
#

Why are you working away from what I asked? If you dont have an answer thats okay.

#

No need to be condescending and rude.

devout ridge
edgy laurel
#

Because your question doesn't have some quantifiable answer. Its not a question you need to even be asking. It appears you had adequate coverage and haven't mentioned anything about performance issues. Pump out is a very specific phenomenon that leads to actually noticing a problem. TIM is going to squish out the sides normally and this isn't the end of the world.

devout ridge
#

the more the better really

#

the smaller the gap between the IHS and the cold plate, the better, which means less paste/PTM inbetween

analog plover
devout ridge
#

people generally put on less volume of compound with traditional paste as compared to PTM

analog plover
devout ridge
#

you start out with more compound (like with PTM), more compound gets pushed out

gentle loom
edgy laurel
analog plover
devout ridge
#

Guilty was trying to get to the underlying problem, i'm lazy and just gave you the straight forward answer, though in all honesty there isn't a definitively better method

analog plover
devout ridge
#

We do get a fair few of those here

#

Though for whatever reason, more often in TC1

edgy laurel
#

I just hate to see people go down XY question rabbit holes.

#

Which this seems to have.

devout ridge
#

True, the very underlying problem remains unaddressed

analog plover
#

Yeah I deal with idiots too lol I work in a PC shop. I’m glad I got a straight up answer, and I’m glad theres someone looking for the root. Both are good approaches for a specific person asking the question.

devout ridge
#

If you aren't seeing a problem with something, then there likely isn't a problem with something

analog plover
devout ridge
#

There is a plethora of details you can stress about, don't add to it

edgy laurel
analog plover
#

As I said I only pulled off the cooler to test fit a larger cooler, CPU runs toasty.

devout ridge

devout ridge

analog plover
analog plover
analog plover
# devout ridge define "toasty"

Also in cinebench all core it throttles quite heavily. I dont expect like sub 80C but I want to improve it at least a little.

edgy laurel
#

I explained this above. "pump out" is a very specific process that occurs over many heat cycles and results in hotspots due to lack of material. It looked fine so the only logical conclusion was just normal effects of compression of two flat surfaces. You're going to see the latter all the time, doesn't necessarily mean you're suffering from pump out which PTM7950 is notoriously resilient to. If you were actually having thermal problems that developed over time, then we might be having a different conversation.

ashift 14 means align to 16k boundaries, and use 16k min alloc size on the drives
im using 128k records across 8 drives plus a parity drive, for 16k per drive per record, aligned to and matching the physical page size on the drives

topaz veldt

turbid locust

What board?

analog plover
odd sable
#

this setup is tuned specifically for 128K records, but it does have some pitfalls, for example compression doesnt work well, because it can't write anything smaller than 128k to the drives

analog plover
turbid locust
#

should definitely have manual PBO limits but im unfamiliar with gigabytes AM5 bios

odd sable
#

because draid enforces full width, its 128k or nothing written to the drives, 8d+1p for 16k sectors being allocated, which means it can't compress 128k down to 64k and write 4d+1p instead like z1 can

turbid locust

what about a 5070 ti makes it 160% of the price of a 5070?

turbid locust
#

It’s not 160%

cosmic gazelle
#

at microcenter it is

turbid locust
#

are you high

analog plover
odd sable
#

added it all up, ive got a usable ballpark of 450TFLOP FP32

cosmic gazelle

they have a zotac 5070 for $550 and a 5070 ti for 833

turbid locust
cosmic gazelle

151%

odd sable

~50% more expensive does not mean 150% lmfao

Oh wait now that you’ve explained it makes sense

odd sable
turbid locust
odd sable
#

50% moreis 150% of the base

turbid locust
edgy laurel
#

no one

cosmic gazelle
#

people who are looking to compare price to performance?

odd sable
#

ive done it, but rarely, and usually when making comparisons both above and below the baseline

#

so, 100% is baseline, A is 104%, B is 95%

#

mostly because 4% better and 5% worse are not the same thing there

turbid locust
#

but anyways it’s about 30% faster with “133% more vram” and people are willing to pay 50% more for that

cosmic gazelle
#

why would they make a ti model that much faster

#

odd

turbid locust
#

ask Nvidia

odd sable

have you seen the 80ti models?

cosmic gazelle

is the 3080ti that much faster than a 3080?

oak vector
edgy laurel
cosmic gazelle
#

yeah it’s just weird the way they structure it

edgy laurel
#

there was likely multiple meetings in board rooms with engineers and accountants that figured this out at some point

odd sable
#

something something, consult the hierarchy

cosmic gazelle
#

wasn’t there a thing with the 3070 ti or something where they got called out for like arbitrarily reducing performance

#

i can’t remember what it was

odd sable
#

and to get some older stuff on there

edgy laurel
odd sable
#

the new one doesnt have 30 series

edgy laurel
#

Tom's has really slacked on retesting the old stuff

odd sable
#

the 1440p ultra one does show the gap between the 1080/1080ti and 2080/2080ti too though

edgy laurel
#

they said they were going to do it a LONG time ago now since they moved to a new test bench

odd sable
#

also see 3060/3060ti

edgy laurel
#

IIRC the old test bench was a 12900k rig. it moved to a 9800x3D rig like a year ago which is when the graphs were updated and RTX3000/RX6000 was dropped

edgy laurel
#

noting that it would all need to be retested but here we are, still nothing

odd sable
#

you mean 4070ti

cosmic gazelle
#

yeah that whole debacle

odd sable
#

a card that very clearly does not perform similarly to the 4080

cosmic gazelle
#

ngl if AMD 1. can make a DLSS 3 competitive version of FSR in the next couple years and 2. releases a card that uses <150 watts and can match my 3080, i’ll probably sidegrade to heat up my room less lol

#

i’ve been getting bugged a bit by 400 watts getting churned into my room nonstop

brisk jolt
#

fsr 4 is equivalent to like 3

cosmic gazelle
#

oh that’s cool, I didn’t realize it had improved that much

odd sable
cosmic gazelle
#

I live in Southern California

#

so no it is certainly not cold enough lol

odd sable
#

i feel that (also in SoCal)

cosmic gazelle
#

I vastly prefer AMD’s driver interface these days and the only Nvidia creature comforts I really like are the fps overlay and nvidia broadcast

#

but like I could do without them

#

freesync and gsync are basically the same thing now

edgy laurel
#

I simply cannot live without these two features. Locked in by Nvidia, there is (currently) no escape.

turbid locust
#

I’ve drank the DLSS koolaid

edgy laurel
#

and there is that

#

yeah i mean, nothing else compares

turbid locust
#

Gaming at 4K requires good upscaling and that’s just Nvidia rn

#

FSR 4 is fine but it’s paywalled behind 4 GPUs and only 1 of them is worth buying for 4K

#

And that 1 gpu is just a less efficient, worse raytracing 5070Ti lol

#

Tbf the 9070XT is still relatively available and about $150 cheaper than the 5070Ti rn so that justifies it a little bit. But for most of the lifecycle they were basically the same price.

#

Yeah I think that’s my current take rn. Unless you’re near a microcenter and can grab a $800 5070Ti, I think you grab a 9070XT if you need a gpu right now.

odd sable
#

or I grab a $600 9070xt

turbid locust
#

Local deal?

odd sable
#

From microcenter (when they had them...)

turbid locust
#

ah lol

odd sable
#

I think they are $650 now?

turbid locust
#

Again I’ve drank the kool aid but I would pay $100-150 for Nvidia feature set

cosmic gazelle
odd sable
#

Yup, $650 for a 9070 XT

cosmic gazelle
#

like it’s so much worse than any dlss

turbid locust
#

Yeah FSR 3 is quite bad

#

FSR 4 is comparable to DLSS 3

#

So it’s acceptable but still obviously worse than DLSS 4 or Transformer

odd sable
turbid locust
#

Many people would be perfectly happy with a 9070XT

odd sable
#

I know I am

turbid locust
#

Anyone on 1440p high refresh rate is like the perfect user for a 9070XT

cosmic gazelle
#

dude i tried to say "to the (word meaning not wearing clothes) eye" and it censored me

odd sable
#

I use a 7900xtx for 4k120

turbid locust
#

I swapped from XTX to 5070Ti

cosmic gazelle
#

i understand why someone would want a 4k display but i feel like if you only game and don't do production work 1440p is fine

#

don't think i would benefit much

turbid locust
#

1440p is fine at 27” or smaller imo

#

anything larger than that you want 4K

cosmic gazelle
#

man it's making me sad, I started watching peanut when he carried like 5-10k viewers and now he's regularly over 100k on youtube and twitch at the same time and i feel like he's gonna fall off soon and become not funny anymore

odd sable
#

48" 4k for me

turbid locust
#

42” 4K for me

cosmic gazelle
#

i think using anything bigger than 27 would be uncomfortable for my sitting position

turbid locust
#

My setup is built around my 42” goober TV

odd sable
#

7900xtx in my gaming machine, 9070xt in my not-gaming machine

odd sable
turbid locust
#

Ya

cosmic gazelle
#

why not the other way around? @odd sable

odd sable
#

Yee, 48c1 is what I got

turbid locust
#

I’m on a 42 C4

odd sable
cosmic gazelle
#

wait the xtx is faster than the 9070 xt?

turbid locust
#

barely

cosmic gazelle
#

weird

turbid locust
#

9070XT is arguably faster if you consider upscaling settings below quality being usable lmao

#

That was my justification going from XTX to 5070Ti

cosmic gazelle
#

i religiously avoid doing anything lower than quality haha

odd sable
#

I don't use upscaling at all

turbid locust
#

I wouldn’t on RDNA 3 either

odd sable
#

I don't on anything

#

Even when I was using a 3090, still no

turbid locust
#

I would rather use upscaling than turn settings down so

cosmic gazelle
#

wait so AMD never released a true high end 9000 series card? how did i not figure that out ever

odd sable
#

I'd rather turn settings down off the dumb ones than upscaling

turbid locust
odd sable
#

"ultra" is dumb and you can usually not see much difference vs high

cosmic gazelle
#

also how did they release a card that reduced process size from 5nm and MCD from 6nm to 4nm and it only uses 50 less watts

odd sable
odd sable

Xtx is 6144 SP, 9070xt is 4096

There’s some like super native elitists that go crazy when I say I can’t tell the difference between Native and DLSS Quality lol

odd sable
#

I'm not a fan of upscaling, because it's a hella bandaid I've seen used to "fix" perf issues at work

turbid locust
#

Like unless you’re hyper analytical of a still image or mostly still scene you’re not noticing lol

odd sable
#

I don't like that, just use upscaling is a way to fix GPU perf issues...

cosmic gazelle
#

i have kind of a hot take about frame gen and it's this- on a high res, high refresh rate display, it looks awful... but on a super low res 60hz tv, it actually is almost indistinguishable i'm so serious

turbid locust
turbid locust
odd sable
#

It's cool, but i don't like that it adds latency

#

And frame gen so doubles down on the part where real perf doesn't need to be good

frank cypress
cosmic gazelle
#

I have a quadro p620 low profile system and i used frame gen for a bit and was shocked by how good it looked on a tv 10 feet away from me

turbid locust
#

I’m excited to see how DMFG is

frank cypress

odd sable

@frank cypress knows, and can back up that it's a large AAA studio you know

cosmic gazelle
#

i don't know if this is a hot take but like, BL4 runs the same as every other UE5 game... stalker 2 and outer worlds 2 run like basically the same

#

at least on my system that is

turbid locust
cosmic gazelle
#

they don't run WELL i'm not saying that

turbid locust
odd sable
#

Fair, I might be more specific in the future, but for now a AAA game from a well known studio is as specific as I'll get

cosmic gazelle
#

i couldn't use FG on stalker 2 because it ruins red dots

frank cypress
#

tbh, imo a lot of the current art and game issues i don't feel like is the fault of devs and artists

#

i feel like it's a top down issue

#

i think it's just.... deadlines

#

at least, from what i can tell

turbid locust
cosmic gazelle
#

bro what

#

that sounds preposterous i can't lie

odd sable
