I generally end up spending around $1500-$2000 CAD by the time I'm "done" with each build, but when I divide that by 8 years, it works out to $187.50-$250 CAD per year. Not too bad, especially considering my PC is my TV, radio, music player, gaming machine, etc.

Usually your models will be loaded into RAM as you work on them anyway. Might take longer to open them in your CAD, but once they're open you should be fine.

Generally, depends on the software thought. If you do run into problems, you can as you mentioned, move the files back and forth.

There are also ways to have it cached on your SSD automatically, but that's a bit more of an involved configuration.

cold storage generally means you copy data to a drive (ssd or hdd) and just leave it unpowered in somewhere for years
HDDs do a quite good job at retaining data like that for a long time while new SSD struggle to keep data intakt over many years like that. the data on an SSD might be partly unreadble after a few years but the SSD could still be used normal after that.

one memory cell of an SSD just gets charged with some voltage and needs to hold that voltage level to keep the data
SLC Nand (1 bit per cell) only needs to remember if it's charged or completely discharged. thats easy to read and works over a very long time
MLC = 2 bits per cell, TLC = 3 bits per cell, QLC = 4 bits per cell, PLC = 5 bits per cell
packing more bits in one cell make memory cheaper but QLC nand with 4 bits now has 2^4=16 diferent voltage levels so a tiny change in voltage already changes the data so they are not that good at holding data over a long time

if the SSD has constantly power it can rewrite the data if nessesary and keep them fresh and readable

For internal storage it's up to you, if you need faster load times or more capacity

Yep I feel like an external HDD might be the choice then, do internal HDDs connected through sata ports and external HDDs connected via USB port perform the same but with external just being more convenient because files can be transfered through usb port right away?
