If you do a mix of gaming and productivity on your computer... once you go 1440p you'll never go back.
and then once you go 4k you dont want 1440 again
is the 1440p quality over 1080p for the same price but you get like 100hz less, like 1ms on the 1440p instead of 0.3ms of the 1080p
they are basically the same price
* unless you use apps whose developers don't understand DPI scaling.
lmao yeah
i mean yeah if you play 1998 games use the 1998 screen res but
for basically anything modern that's not an issue
you could also just swap to a lower res for that
Okay, now the parts list is updated
Oh what’s that, 4K?
Yeah um that button is smaller than what the human eye can see now
I basically only play single player games like rdr2 and gta story and Assassin's creed. So should I go with thd 1440p just to get better res in the games?
Because I dont... really need 280hz 1080p for games like that 😃
yea i just switched back to 100% on yt and it looks so small damn
That cooler rated for 95 can handle 140+ ... Right?? I mean I know I cooled all core overclock 1950 x on a d15.
But that was a flagship cooler
Some apps just scale so badly they become unusable at a normal distance without scaling it up
A cooler rated for 95W can handle 140W+? Is that the question?
nothing you do on a nas is going to max that cpu out, you can also just powercap it
oh
unfortunately not true
if running ZFS it'll hit 100% CPU during scrubs
i could prob use a 4k mointor but 4k mointor is just unreasonable tbh
because i have to sit so close to my mointor because my desk is so small
Yeah I was pushing 400w through a D15 ... and I know damn well she wasn't rated for that, but worked fine.
So Ethan explained to me that he chose the K because it's going to be better binned and therefore should be more memory stable
K is not better binned its just unlocked
In theory that means that I could pull the voltage down for any given clock.
and memory OC ability does not matter in a NAS what so ever
you would literally benefit from the ppi more then
larger viewing distances mask lower ppi
afaik Intel doesn’t even bin IMCs
I know this is rhetorical but have you looked into how ARL works at all?
Yeah that was my understanding too. Idk why he chose it then
not at all
So anyway... my 265K mITX build is power limited to like 105W
otherwise it overheats when Plex analyzes for intros/credits
the 245k is the runt of the arrowlake design
They're all going to need to be power limited on a low profile cooler
What does ARL stand for? I'm not familiar with that acronym
I have tried like 3 - 4 different low profile coolers and they all hit over 100C without power limiting
arrow lake
yeah i meant in reply to ethans thing
ah
doesn't that mean smaller mointor tho
Luckily intel handles being power limited fantastically with less loss then one myte expect
no just higher res
Oh NOPE... I just typed up a whole thing and then remembered it's lunar Lake not arrow Lake 💀
this was hilarious
this sounds like skill issue i wont lie
ah
just shunt mod imc ngl
i want a oled 1440p mointor
This is one of the comments sent here of all time
hm
mmmmm ddr5 9000
truly a statement of all time
I didn't say anything about that at all, I just chose it over the KF because you'll need the Igpu
oy vey
I didn't put much thought into the cooler beyond it definitely fitting in the case
he got kinda close to what i told him
A different one is probably needed
i told him that K skus have unlocked SA voltage which allows higher memory speeds
yeah most don't - its a trial and error thing. I have the ID Cooling 67mm jawn and yeah even with a noctua fan on it, I have to set short and long power to 105W
Ahh, maybe it was the guy that said that he likes to go see his nass that recommended the K for the bin? Idk it's hard to keep track of everyone
CML server B)
i play older games sometimes in the ui gets so zoomed out so its better to play at like 1152x864 lol
@warped mountain what's the current list looking like?
So "glued together" design, I read Intel's brief, obviously they're not going to brag about what's bad
You mentioned undervolting it
I am not sure you are familiar enough with the concept especially on ARL, but further, there's not a ton to be had on this platform
Well if you have a superior Bin chip it can run the same ghz at a lower voltage yes.
You are more than likely going to have to power limit the CPU if it does any all-core work for any appreciable amount of time
I just ment in general, but if they're not bines then it's irrelevant
Thank you
I think it’s a genius idea ngl
I didn't look at the case too hard, would a 240mm AIO fit?
You mean don't just pull an AMD and Target 100c sustained? 😜 I tease I tease. Yeah kind of figured that when I saw "125" TDP
The CPUs do not have hyper threading and so the P core are already on a performance deficit
TDP is irrelevant
Okay
It will, in fact, hit 250W with the right power profile in BIOS
Your case wouldn't work iirc
What price to performance nutter has been touching this
So in theory if it says 125 TDP that means you need a cooler rated for 125 TDP obviously everybody calculates TDP differently so it doesn't actually matter it's just a guidance point.
No, not in therory, at all, ever. This has never been accurate.
That's what I just said.
GN did a whole deep dive of educational content on it.
You can't be using an ITX board for this.... It allows absolutely zero future expansion and is a waste of money
I'd ditch the case entirely and figure out how to mount it all in one of the spaces you have
There was some .... Modifications necessary. Snail pointed out we had nowhere near enough memory for the array size.
I had to change the motherboard to fit inside the case 🫤 not particularly thrilled about that if you look at them other board you'll see why... Nevertheless it's what's necessary.
Noctua has a good article on this topic for those interested. https://www.noctua.at/en/expertise/guides/noctua-standardised-performance-rating
Ditch the case idea then, it's going to be mounted in a hole anyway
Yeah about that .... I spent 5 hours this morning trying to find a case that would fit in my biggest spot.
#tech-chat-2 message
Figure out how to mount the drives safely by themselves
The problems with TDP (Thermal Design Power) ratings
Especially if you're telling me I cannot hard mount it
Exactly, so ditch the case
Figure out how to mount the drives
Screw the rest to some plywood
#tech-chat-2 message
We can use spot 2 but that's going to require me to Mount the case screwed down to a place of plywood and you said don't do that, I presume due to the risk of high frequency vibration.
lol yeah so.....
what happens when i push flash bios button when computer is on
it blows up and destroys itself
Disregard, no we cannot use that space because the case would have to fit through a one foot wide opening (see that wooden strengthening beam) and so far we've cant find a case that can do that.

great sarcasm
Is this TrueNAS deployment going to run plex
Probs just fails and cancels still not recommended see manual for more info
It can I was just going to use hexos and just use the file system to have everything sorted. Or can you not do a file search/ browse like windows?
ARL igpu isn't supported in current mainstream linux distro kernels
Happens little things
ig i never needed it so
Does it not just run Arc drivers
no
🤬
It runs on kernel modules
i updated my bios when i first got it but about it
Ooofs, dang
So I need to change the CPU/motherboard
and i only looked up my mobo for the specs of it
supposedly 6.9 and newer works
I did, I figured the stronger internal GPU would stop me from having to use an dGPU and since we ran into the ITX issue that was actually rather important.
until now i saw the back of it online and i was looking if my mobo had one
Also if your board has a realtek 8216 NIC it does not work without blacklisting existing drivers and building kernel mods
Maybe I should just run windows server?
might update bios but idk if i need to tbh
DITCH THE CASE
Yeah here's the thing - you didn't find out if it works with the OS.... which is only something I have mentioned like 20 times
I explicitly chose it because it has 5 gig Intel
I don't recall you ever mentioning that.
Which was my mistake obviously
Are you kidding me
You told me to check and see if the OS worked with arrow Lake?
It's not worth using a case if you have to kneecap the capabilities of the system
Figure out a way to mount 6 drives safely
Bud, I build 1,000 node solutions. I consider everything. I have told you, time and again, to consider all facets. I even used the word facets.
You have done almost zero compatibility research
All you have done is replied with $User said to get X
"Oh well $USER_X said get it, why is $USER_Y contradicting that?"
Yeah I read that. I didn't understand that you were saying to check arrow Lake versus the OS ..... I thought you were simply saying that it's "out of my league and I don't possess enough knowledge or brain capacity" in order to set up a flash parody system and since it sounds like you work on these I took you at your word...
Fuck USER_X and Y, why are you not researching if your shit even runs on what you intend to use it on
I never considered that it wouldn't.
Always assume brand ndew bleeding edge shit won't work
and then find out if it will
Here's another gem -
So I owe you a massive thanks! You just save me building the entire system which is going to be frustrating in an ITX only to find out I can't get it to do what I needed to do
Thank you all knowing one 🙏
It's been out a year...
You don't seem to know how linux works
Linux supports it - how much do you know about building kernels from source?
Because the TrueNAS distributions are not on latest kernels
🤬 it ... Anyone know of any ITX x399 boards? Imma go pull out the 1950X

Ano...
Rewind all the way back to when I said just buy a fuckin Synology
what is truenas based on, debian?
And somebody pointed out that the CPUs will not be able to keep up with my use case.
ehhhhhh
I have 100TB behind a Synology
either way it doesn't matter but just for reference the original arc cards i think just recently are fully supported on debian
Is it able to transcode video on the fly?
No because NAS are not transcoders
so consider that for support times
Yeah... So maybe I should just do what I originally was going to do and do it the wrong way?
Its supported in Linux Kernel 6.13, but that wans't mainstream in any distro like 3 months ago when I played with it
Windows 11, I guess hardware raid 6 via LSI and just have it as a share network drive?
Hardware RAID will fail rebuilding with 22TB+ drives
Doesn't Windows off for a weird software raid thing I remember combining disks back in the day
Storage Spaces, and its ass
The reason ZFS is used is because of how it "re-silvers"
Well a simple fix here then.... Go down to alder or raptor lake
The issue is going to be finding an ITX board that has eight sada ports on it and whose chipset natively supports raid 6.. I can do 10 butt yeah. I know most of them will do raid 5. But if I remember correctly from a year and a half ago it was stated that raid 5 is just going to give you false promises
I think you failed to read above
"RAID" will have a high failure rate DURING a rebuild on disks > 20TB
Right via the LSI card
No, via "RAID"
ZFS is a filesystem not a "RAID"
google ZFS rebuild vs RAID rebuild
Ohhh so you're saying you've been using like on board the motherboard raid is not sufficient?
Ditch. The. Fucking. Case.
Get the Matx board from my original list, 6 drives (no fucking LSI needed) and figure out how to mount it all in one of your spaces
This is what I have been saying yes "RAID" is dead
* Depends on the NAS, but in general, this is true or most pre-built NAS devices. I do have an older DS918+ with a Celeron J3455 CPU that includes Quick Sync video transcoding but... it's pretty anemic. Handles a couple 1080p transcodes fine, but only 1x 4K transcode, and that HEAVILY depends on the codecs being used.
i feel like this guy has infiltrated LTTCord for the sole reason of confusing and frustrating TC2 for over a week
Like when you go into not the BIOS but you can do the RAID before the BIOS and everything like that (I'm going off of memory from my EVGA x58 here)
XD
Dude prob doesn't even need transcoding and can just use direct play or stream or whatever it is where the end point transcodes
Actually not the Matx board from the original list, go down to raptor lake so it actually works
Ahhhh I misunderstood I thought you meant like active raid cards.
go down to alder, cheaper, same igp
No - it's why I have emphasized that its important when you "DIY" to actually understand the technology and what you're trying to do
I think my s25 ultra can play all of my media formats... Pretty sure
Less ecores
Sure, there's Windows Storage Spaces... if you like losing your data.
As others have noted, ZFS is better.
Yeah we went down this route also - how someone with zilch experience on a DIY solution trying to build a 64TB+ usable "NAS" is going to learn painfully if they don't research
Don't be an idiot
believe me im far off from dropping down
This NAS will not survive without a case giving overall shared rigidity. I won't be able to mount the hard drives in a secure enough way (without literally bolting them together) to where they won't be thrown around if I have to slam on the brakes on the freeway or when driving down dirt trails.
I did originally think no case. But then I thought about it and I was like yeah you're talking about 1.5 to 2 g's at times it's not going to stay in place 💀💀
They did the work so you dont have toooo
Very cool
The fuck are you on about? There are plenty of isolated drive cages that you could use. It'd be absolutely no different than in a case, other than the fact it'll actually fit without being handicapped
Once you read thru it and then factor in A) the cost of the things that can do hardware decode and B) if they are vendor locked on disks... its prob cheaper/easier to build a Plex server separate of a NAS, at least it was for so long as I have read that doc
You have no pcie cards to secure, the only concern is the drives and it'll be easy when you actually bother to think about it properly
Okay, so your suggestion is to screw everything down here on that plywood? Can't wood be conductive or not at the voltage and amperages we're going to be using? The platform is 9.5 inches wide.
I dunno how else to tell dude when you're trying to build a NAS solution there's pretty much every imaginable compatibility consideration to be made
You may have missed the part where all of this nonsense is going into an RV
i think this guy may be in too far
picked one randomly that can do everything on the list, $720 before drives
which model
eaaaah
but dual 10Gb
how many bays to we need for this again
no idea, i'm not making any points just poking around at whats available
is this not just define 7 xl and learn hypervisors time
one for drives and one for jellyfin
. . . .
How the hell did I miss all this for hearing to SMP owners argue over paying a 15 year old and then about taking a percentage out of each other's earnings from their respective servers?
If only this was that straight forward...
oh wait can't you run docker containers under truenas
so you could just have jellyfin anyway
yeah
[X] mITX
[X] Wants 4 GB/s data transfer speeds (big GB/s)
[X] Going in an RV
[X] No network on said RV
yes but that doesn't solve some other issues
I didn't miss that at all, which is why I'm saying what I'm saying
Is the next step adding said missing network somehow?
namely the Z890 realtek NICs don't work until later kernels and or kernel mods, igpu support isn't until like kernel 6.13
No idea I have been ignoring that part - they said wifi is fine..
You really don't think much do you?
We are on like day 3 of wtfery
I mean... I guess that counts then? Lol.
You don't just screw a board down to a piece of wood, you mount it on standoffs, or if you are lazy, you get a cheap case and cut the board tray out of it
Put it this way - I flew from PA to FL, drove 4 hours, took my boat 400 miles round trip, put my boat back in storage, and flew back to PA from Miami, and we're still talking about this
No it's day 2, it was supposed to all be ordered 10 hours ago.
Oh ... I was totally going to just screw it down
New thing, might just fit
Damn... I somehow failed to notice this all was happening.
it was 11/7 that you began this next chapter of meandering
lol its trailing behind like 9 days of laptop scrutiny
It's been a hell of a ride
@edgy laurel so back to that boat + tide situation - its getting better a little but I think I fucked up my rotator cuff
So I should buy this is what you are saying and it will be better then what we are trying to build? https://www.amazon.com/Synology-8-Bay-DiskStation-DS1823xs-Diskless/dp/B0BSTNV5TG
And then later when I get starlink I can stream my media anywhere in the world? We already know the games can't go on there. But I presume it can store things other than just media? Like files too right? Remember I want to move away from paying for cloud storage eventually.
The DS1823xs+ is a powerful 8-bay storage server that can easily be deployed anywhere to provide central data storage and sharing, endpoint and server backup, VM storage, surveillance management, and other business applications. It is perfect in settings where no dedicated server rack or data cen...
that has a AMD Ryzen V1780B
There is no hardware transcoding ability
Again, I stand by - NAS are NOT Plex boxes
It does not, my available space is 370 mm (W) × 315 mm (D) × 450 mm (H):
Plex box
Yeah I mentioned intentions, we just started actions last night
Not Plex box
this bad boy with a 3060 and a couple 4tb m.2 and you’re set for plex
Its got a 265K - I use igpu with quicksync
Now you're just being obtuse intentionally with the sole intention of defame ... it was not 9 days...
whats the m.2s for
That works too, running 2.5in ssds in the gpu space?
storage…?
No need - I mount storage remote
Ah that makes sense
Things that need the lil extra umph
the only m.2s in my setup is one dedicated to truenas os, and another dedicated to docker app files
I think I have a 1TB 990 Pro in it for OS, but otherwise its 2.5 Gbps wired to like 100TB+ of Plex storage
I was thinking of putting a 5070 Ti or 5080 in it just for luls
I dunno, it's still funny to me out of context.
so the exact size of the NAS you linked, no more no less?
thats pretty fire, how much redundancy do you have?
i would say read the context, but it’s several days long now
Okay, what do I need to do the things that I want to do cuz clearly I'm not on the same page as everyone else.
-I want to stream (locally for now) an original quality 100Mb/s HDR/DV 10-bit, 7.1 sound. That way I can enjoy The Full experience.
-I need it to protect my data with redundancy.
-eventually it will be hooked up to starlink (that way I have access to it remotely) but in the meantime I'll need the ability to pull about 300 GB of data at a time for when I'm not physically on site.
I don't think there is anything else TBH, we will be limited by network throughput it sounds like.
Its 8 x 18TB Exos in.... 2 disk parity
100Mb/s is not as much as you think it is
Buy a NAS, buy a Dell SFF with intel CPU
Build nothing
old office PCs ftw
i would kill for some sffs
Please get your brain checked
Yes, this was my measurements. We might be able to get a 5cm here there but not really.
also how much bloody storage do you need?
10 billion petabytes
I'm aware, I'm just stating what my requirements are.
you can get 14tb drives for around 200USD
Can you explain that setup? Like how would it work.
step one, buy Dell SFF
step two, install drives
step three, install truenas
step four, install and setup plex
step five, done
The n6 should fit in that
We currently have 64 TB not backed up. Now was mentioning just to hold our current data we need to make sure we don't go over 80%. So we would need at least 80 TB. I add 8 to 16 TB per year.
small business or personal use
No no he said NOT to do all that, that it won't work because compatibility.
who the hell is “he”
Snail he says he does this for a living.
i majorly dislike vague antecedents, i mean it kind of depends
is the nas for yourself, or a business
A dell SFF isn't going to fit 6 28tb drives
You can't put 8+ drives in an oem box
You can stick em in a 3d printed enclosure ontop of it
HBA and some longish cables and you’re set
Speaking of:
3d print an itx nas case. Several exist
you can also transplant the guts into a cheap 4u case off amazon, like 100usd
that’s what i did for a while
Too big
Guys do I do this for a living?
You work?
Barely!
definitely just an expensive hobby afaik
You're not wrong
It's the depth that will be an issue. Actually you're right it should I'll just have to turn it 90° 🤘 hell ya we got our case. And it supports M-ATX as requested
i would ask but i dont want to set the convo back 3 days
It's for me personally, the last time I did this was back on x58. And I just ran Windows 7 and set it up as a map network drive.
The problem is is I only have limited places where I can actually put it. So like under the closet the platform's 9.5 wide but whatever goes in there has to be 12 in or narrower in one dimension.
In the front closet which is where I prefer it to be. The sizes I gave is what's required to get it into it particularly the width of the door
We did jokingly say we could put it right above the inverter but it would have to be 26 wide 12 deep and under 17 tall and we couldn't find anything that would do that
I need to figure out how to make this hobby a career
now put it in a camper
You still haven't explained like how I would interact with this setup.
If you need that explained you're not going to do well bud
Snails a silly goose
you would interact with it like literally any other nas
Same as any nas
So N6 case, last gen board, and CPU ... Order wait 2 days for arrival build this weekend!
Like if I have to explain why you'd use a NAS with a separate Intel-based CPU SFF PC... what are we even doing here
What's the point of this sff??
the transcoding...
Going in lots of circles
I am almost convinced its a poorly trained LLM
Oh, why can't you just do that in the NAS?
holy shit dude
NAS -> sff pc (jellyfin, transcodes, et. al ) -> client devices
Ok
host a fuck load of mc servers
Fine
were the training data
No llm is this bad
homebrew llm trust
senior design project for a cs major
^
senior is putting this too highly
we're in a youtube video
want
this is a llm written llm
Hs sophomore
"can i trick the ltt discord server with my homemade llm"
mac i will be the 4th mpower owner soon
unless
yall must not have seen how sad some senior design projects are
nah i already gave the flops my address
Given how dumb actual humans are here, probably
the 12900ks will surely do 7200 on it
So this and the $2,000 empty Synology unit, and it will do everything I need?
Plus the HDD's obviously
unless you want my AYW OC and 14900k
im not paying for the mpower but i may be tempted another time
oh cool https://www.reddit.com/r/vancouver/comments/1outblw/a_severe_g4_geomagnetic_storm_is_underway_right/
i do want a 14900k but i've spent a lot lately
oh lmao
im giving him a 12700k+2070s for it
swag
then when i get bored of tuning it i'll probably use the mpower in my new nas (i will not have a 9 day saga)
and retire the 7500t i use now
12900ks nas too
my Nas is a 7700x so
this my current setup (i know it's unreliable so nothing important is on it)
Actually this is a WAYY better deal then the minisforum!
yall giving your nas some very nice specs
dude just buy a thinkcenter tiny off ebay for like 50 bucks
anything skylake and newer can transcode 4k fine
BMW M power?
Lenovo ThinkCentre M600 Tiny Desktop PC – Intel, 8GB RAM, 120GB SSD, Windows 10
that's haswell i'd do a bit newer
https://www.ebay.com/itm/267446026209 like this is plenty for your needs
6 threads
holy shit my encoding may take less than 10 hours
That, or a Dell Micro Form Factor PC. (The only reason I like the Dell's better is because their barrel jack style power adapter is much more readily available should I need to replace it. Otherwise, Lenovo's Tiny is just fine too.)
like if it's just jellyfin this is what your pc is gonna be doing for 90% of it's power on time
that's fair lemme look at optiplex micros
https://www.ebay.com/itm/127485349950 160 for better cpu and more ram
and then you can host jellyfin on windows/linux distro of choice
i'd assume you'd like windows more
Okay so that and the $5,500 for the Synology and used drives. And we should be golden, it will do everything that I need?
Well we still need to do the wifi lol. I don't have a device with an ethernet port.
The good news is that's really easy, is a very small space so all we need is a fast one we don't need one that has particularly strong signal.
well you wire the nas to the sff box over ethernet
and the jellyfin server if you buy the optiplex i linked has wifi in it
Yas, I have 3x of these with the same processor just waiting to be repurposed.
Yeah, ohhh those have built in wifi? Hell yeah. Is it relatively strong? It's going to have to get through a fridge 😅.. and it's at the very back of the unit.
They have a built-in WiFi receiver ... technically I think Windows still lets you broadcast WiFi from a computer, but that's meant as a way to share a wired ethernet connection to other devices. What's your plan for the Local network that devices like phones and tablets will connect to?
im pretty sure the plan is just jellyfin over wifi
which that thing can do fine with no external configuration
Perfect "The Intel AC 8260 Wi-Fi card has a maximum speed of 867 Mbps on the 5 GHz band and 300 Mbps on the 2.4 GHz band, for a combined theoretical maximum of up to 1200 Mbps."
So it should have no issues watching media, while also moving files around. 🤘
I guess to the SFF it sounds like. I'll have to see if Samsung still has the setting where you can connect to Wi-Fi without internet access and it will still use the 5G.
do you own a router
No
even with no actual internet it'll still broadcast and do ip assignment for lan
i would pick one of those up then as well
then when you want starlink you just hook it up to that
Oh, yeah that's what I was talking about at the end of this #tech-chat-2 message
Wait I need dual ports on the sff huh? One in to connect to the nas, one out to connect to the router out
no
i mispoke earlier, nas will connect to router
and then the sff will also connect to the router ideally
Okay, ya that was my understanding
then you'll have a dead wifi up but local stuff like jellyfin will work
I would strongly recommend looking into an actual local network. Doesn't need to be crazy, but having a dedicated router that supports the ability to receive a 5G signal using a SIM card would be much easier to manage / setup than playing with Windows networking.
https://engineerswhovanlife.com/van-life-internet/
also you might be able to get like tmobile 5g internet for cheap
and use that on the go
There's going to be way too powerful for my tiny space. But it's wifi 7 so that's good. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B09HJJN7MS?linkCode=ogi&th=1&psc=1&tag=cnet-buy-button-20&ascsubtag=70a8f0be6e61482980f6eaa15ce1c93b
when do you pickup apex
Yup, that's an option too, though I've found that lots of Cellular Modems are quite... lackluster when it comes to features. (Some can't even do local Static IPs.) Even if you don't currently plan to connect such a setup to cellular, you can just leave those parts out of your setup and stick to building a robust local network.
Tomorrow
i wouldn't bother with a mesh setup for a smaller camper
1 ap will handle everything fine
No they triangulate it so if you start moving they disable it, and where the campers currently parked Is on The Fringe of all the towers they won't let me subscribe here otherwise I would already have it cuz something would be better than nothing.
Apex for <$400 is quite humorous ngl
I’m getting an Apex for like barely more than you guys paid for OCF
im jelly bro i wouldn't have the minion motherboard if it was in stock at the time
but i mean it works fine for what i do
no that's the tachyon
oh
T-Mobile would probably prefer that 😅 I use 400- 500GB a month
there’s definitely a generation of OCF with horizontal dimms
you thinkin evga z790?
I don't like them
Yeah I investigated it my buddy had Verizon and although it was very.... Temperamental (okay only works well in the middle of the night because it has final priority on towers..)
But your address has to be approved and where the campers currently located is not allowed and if you try to use it on the go, like starlink, it just won't work and you'll get your account disabled for TOS.
im gonna try and get stuff for a ram fan moun tomorrow
so i can get back to tuning my cpu
Oh it's just capable of mesh, it's able to work standalone, it was just the best rated Wi-Fi 7 on the list I saw.
should be fine then
I wonder if 5nails ram fan bracket will work on this apex
It uses ATX hole spacing
im ngl im gonna go to home depot and grab some L brackets
and hang it from my aio fan
Assuming it clears my AIO that’d be really swag
i couldn't find any brackets online like snail has
Sounds like you need to find an alternate provider... 😉 One designed for your use-case. I have zero experience with these types of providers, but basically, you want a provider that offers cellular specifically for "van life" or RVs.
https://mobilemusthave.com/pages/mmh-data-plans
https://nomadinternet.com/
Isn’t the 265K super air cooler friendly anyway
thingaverse just had stupid fan covers
yeah i ran mine on a d15s with 0 issues
i just needed an aio for this fishbowl
I ordered a Peerless Assassin Mini for some reason the other day
i have one of those in my closet
only thermalright cooler i've liked tbh
wait isn't this literally what i need?
120mm fan on one side and screws into the top of my aio fan
Could work
i'll add it to the cart but i'll still look in person
what z890 do you have to resell with the bundle
I would like to design my own brackets but I need to force myself to learn CAD
AYW
i do not own a 3d printer anymore
i threw away my elegoo? or whatever because it was all sticky and i never used it
was a hand me down
All right snail since you were the only one that identified the compatibility issue after nearly 12 hours of conversing with both tech chats.
You think this will do everything I need and keep up with my needs? https://www.amazon.com/Synology-8-Bay-DiskStation-DS1823xs-Diskless/dp/B0BSTNV5TG
Paired with this.
https://www.ebay.com/itm/127485349950
That is your ideal setup for the requirements.
The DS1823xs+ is a powerful 8-bay storage server that can easily be deployed anywhere to provide central data storage and sharing, endpoint and server backup, VM storage, surveillance management, and other business applications. It is perfect in settings where no dedicated server rack or data cen...
my Neptune 4 Pro was an absolute PITA but I got it printing consistently now
Involved me converting it to open source lmao
it was literally soaked in resin and all of mine spoiled
so i just had 0 interest in actually using it
Feel like an A1 Mini would be perfect for folks like us
when i move out i'll probably pick up an extrusion one
The comparability issue of the 245k being too new for truenas? How'd that evolve into giving Synology money
since i'll have an apartment and not a 10x10 room for my stuff
i checked if i could return the ocf but im out of the return window
otherwise i would've had a friend pickup an apex for me and ship it here
the ocf is fine but having a bios written by adults would be a major up
Yeah Floppa was complaining about the bios to me in DMs yesterday
lol i warned you dogs
i mean my main issue is resolvable with a 12 dollar splitter but
next time i'll go asus and be comfy with it
Yeah the 5G home internets go final on priority on cell towers by design. What that means is you can have at night 300 Meg service but then in the middle of the day you may only have 4 or 6 service. Which can be a little inconvenient having to wait until 11:30pm to get real internet speeds.
That's why I was just thinking starlink mini ($299) at $165/month. I wonder how gaming is? 35 upload will be fine?
ordered the fan bracket
so i can go back to real adult memory tuning on friday
and not 1.35v baby land
My company issues us Verizon 5G hotspot/modems and its not locked to a geographical location
@topaz veldt said it was the best for my needs. Always view them as a piece of shit closed ecosystem but apparently he likes them.
games don't really use a ton of upload bandwidth
They were talking about the 5G home internet boxes. Not the hotspot modem ones
Yeah, but the streaming media will.
Tada. Nobody's setup is perfect, and their setups may not be right for you, but hopefully this gives you some ideas.

Wait does the apex come with a goofy ass ram fan? Lol
it does but it did almost nothing for me
eh i'll just sack the bottom intake actually
Ah
Not if you're streaming locally... you're not planning to attempt using mobile internet to stream video outside of the local network connection, are you? That's usually a HUGE ToS violation that you'll get your account shutdown for...
I have an extra nf-a12x25 G2
i use a p12 pro in the other pc but it's annoying
arctic pros goes hard
I am done with P12s
yeah on my ears
goddamnit
Because if my media file is 100 Mbps, and we're trying to send it over a 35 Mbps (max) upload, if we want to view it in the original quality we'll have to wait for it to download which will take longer than the length of the movie about three times as long so 10 hours... Again assuming Max capable speed.
Or I guess that's where the transcoding comes in to try to bring it down to a stream size that will max out the upload.
That's the system you guys engineered right to be able to do that?
we cannot control your internet speed
the setup is capable of more than then internet
I would pay a subscription to not have this guys messages appear in my chat
"you guys engineered" - I hate to break it to you, but you're the one engineering the system. We're just sharing anecdotal advice / suggestions. 😄 Running your own "van life" / RV network + internet requires lots of work. Kudos to you wanting to do it, but it's not a cakewalk. Not trying to be rude here; just setting expectations.
I know about the vanlifers and their sponsorships. I actually originally wanted to do a built-in hard Mount PC and then just have everything wireless and have it display output to the TV but then I saw 5090 prices and decided not to and buy a laptop for less than the price of the 50 90. Lol
if you buy the stuff you linked earlier you can theoretically do gigabit if the drives are fast enough
so your choke for remote access will be your upload regardless of setup
and the download speed on the client
Huh? Wait like you're saying I can't access my media library over the internet?
No I understand that I'm just saying that that's the whole point of the sff is to transcode to the available upload speed?
the point of the sff is to be a box that handles everything beyond storage, including transcodes yeah
The whole point was to eliminate their stupid movie watching method for when they're not home
I am just shocked this is still going on at the phase that it is
also what made asus decide to just start dumping ayw boards stateside
???
we've gotten like a dozen models
Read any provider's Terms of Service... even most home internet providers technically FORBIDrunning servers / hosting things. People do this all the time (my Synology is accessible to a few friends externally, as are a couple game servers) but that doesn't mean I'm not violating my ISP's Term of Service. Also... CG-NAT is fun. 😏
afaik non OC skus have been available for some time
i guess they gatekept the cool ones then and i never noticed the lame ones
Wait does starlink even give outside accessible static IPS?? I remember that when I did business support for AT&T they were sticky IPS. Starlink does not 😭
Apex has suspiciously few fan headers
No. It's all CG-NAT. To my knowledge, you must rout connections through something like Tailscale, assuming you have devices compatible with the client software / connection method, at least.
how many
I’m seeing 3 regular chassis 4 pin headers
ocf has 6 (+1 additional pump if you count it) total
Oh so it's going to be like AT&T when businesses didn't want to pay for IPs..
it'll work for a while but if there's a system update it will change, the issue is if I'm not with the RV... I can't make the updates or even know what the IP is changed to..
4 are chassis fans specifically
No, it's not like that at all. CG-NAT means you CANNOT route connections to the IP address at all.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carrier-grade_NAT
Again, there are ways around this, but they technically violate the ToS and require much configuration.
https://www.reddit.com/r/selfhosted/comments/1g33tp0/you_can_host_a_website_behind_cgnat_for_free/
Carrier-grade NAT (CGN or CGNAT), also known as large-scale NAT (LSN), is a type of network address translation (NAT) used by ISPs in IPv4 network design. With CGNAT, end sites, in particular residential networks, are configured with private network addresses that are translated to public IPv4 addresses by middlebox network address translator de...
Open ports and what not
???????
Asus wtf does this even mean
sounds like 2 of those run 100% perma
yeah like wtf
and the dinky fan uses an asus specific header
I will splice a resistor don’t fw me
I highly recommend reading up on CG-NAT before purchasing anything for your mobile living situation. You may find that what you're trying to do it either not possible at all, or requires a complex amount of knowledge.
Wait, so even if I can see my public IP I can't actually use it for incoming?
on which
The pump one is also probably a higher amperage one
on my fan
do you not have a fan hub mac
hell naw
they’re like $10
I wire my fans like a man
which fan tho
I dunno
there's like one full speed fan header i think
i have the noctua one which was a colossal waste of money but it looks cool
2 of them actually yeah
why did i pay $35 for this
Based
I apologize I don't remember your issue
I have bad memory i dont even know if i told you 💀
Arrives today?
does that do rgb or is it rgb
I had zero recollection either when he told me last night
it controls rgb and 6 fans
Argb is in title bru
yeah mine just does 8 fans
happens when you don’t live in the middle of fkin nowhere
which didn’t clarify if it was rgb or controlled it
Why would a fan hub have rgb 😭
i’m not a professional in wiring light up toys for children
Valid
Valid
when rgb ssds exist its not unbelievable to mean that clear top meant a light shines through it
Looks like IPv6, a VPN with port forwarding, of tailscale/zerotier.
TFW light up kids toy smokes your professional machine
My cpu got rgb
professional imc loser
the only rgb fans i’ve owned were some corsair thing
so i’ve never actually wired up rgb thankfully
i mean market trend is the lights sell so it’s have it anyway
if stuff all used windows dynamic lighting by default i’d be more interested but i don’t feel like using a bunch of individual software or have ads in my central control application
anyways wtf do you tune on ARL cpu core wise
the e cores are the main meaningful gain if i remember right
My chair got rgb to maximize performance
Should I set pump speed to always 100% ? Its a bit louder than all the fans
does it have rgb?
no
Whoever said that shit and made it common “knowledge” I hate them
type shit
Having anything at always 100% speed is a bad idea
It has like a screen lol why
oh also when you get the apex can you test my d2d bug
So make it scale with speed along with the fans?
i need to email asrock but one more sample won’t hurt
I would set a static speed at whatever spot is quiet but still performant
Rgb pumps function better
My LF3 basically sees no scaling past 80% pump speed
just set ngu and d2d to 32/32 like 200s boost and it’ll pass, sleep and resume, it’ll fail in p95 large or vt3
on 32/30 it won’t do that
idk what half this shit means
happened on floppa’s and akns but not snails
they’re 2 ratios for stuff on the chip
ngu is uncore and d2d is die to die
it’s basically fclk
INTEL GOT COPE FABRIC?
no its just the closest equivalent
no
higher die to die means the interconnect between tiles is faster
swag
instead overclock your pump-
Alright, do y'all see anything else I need to add?
but above 30 it breaks with sleep and i just want another datapoint before emailing asrock
because if it doesn’t happen to you then evidently the apex has special privileges
Word
wealthy privilege
tall and handsome privilege
it’s happened on the master, the ocf, and a nova so far
so if the apex doesn’t happen twice then evidently it’s something they need to fix on the ocf
i’m not emailing gigabyte they can kiss my butt
4 bios updates for oled memory
fr
I will meta game bios versions on z890
yeah i’m running a beta bios from ocn on my board
What is this for
NAS?
Z890 and 265K probably doesn’t even make it to my main rig till this weekend
It’s going straight on the bench
that’s valid
What is the purpose of a NAS?
we do 9k or I kms on the spot
Correct this is what Snail recommended for my use case. I always viewed Synology like apple but sounds like they have completely changed.
i can’t stabilize 9k so i hope you can
Apex diff please
nah my imc is just not great
"Okay, what do I need to do the things that I want to do cuz clearly I'm not on the same page as everyone else.
I don't think there is anything else TBH, we will be limited by network throughput it sounds like."
Whats your use case?
at hyper specific signaling voltage values i got to boot into windows and take screenshots
the second i opened karhu the pc locked up
So youre streaming for your house?
I’m hoping Asus black magic just works
Yes, then transcoding for remote viewing/general access, my goal is to stop paying for cloud storage eventually and just host it locally.
I don’t even pay for cloud storage 💀
Ive never used the cloud
I had to because my basic tier just could not keep up with my needs.
My brother in Christ
hope so
great now there’s 2 of them
2tb should be $5 and 5tb should be $10
Honestly I think it’ll be up to my ram
I think I’ll need some CKD cope
Yeah, I used to have 1.5TB used before I purged.
i may get one of these eventually but rn i’m not super interested
I’ll do what I need to for the screenshot
hmm $630 SGD for a 265K and a B860I after taxes doesnt sound bad…
sadly isnt a bundle
i’m gonna try to get 8000 booted on the ks for giggles
RPL can die in a fire
adl
8000?
lol
rn it boots but dies in 15 min but i’m using a z690-e so the memory topology is stinky
idk either way it’ll just end up being a pretty looking nas board eventually
I haven’t bought a 2DPC board in over a year
Proud of myself
well technically I have but I returned it
and I’m technically buying one tomorrow but it’s literally not being unsealed
i don’t regret buying the master but i’ll probably stick with 1dpc for my desktop
Just the peace of mind of knowing you don’t have a board limit is peak
But yeah that's the use case, files like this and whatnot.
Scrolling z890 Apex owner OCN thread and accidentally finding @topaz veldt posts lol
The amount of people there not getting 9k stable makes me nervous but
you will notice most are 285K owners
Man I am not looking forward to 4 hours of driving BEFORE work
more luck outta 265K or 285K for mem OC?
Also cause it’s 2am and I’ve barely slept
or just both completely random xd
there's a benefit to having less tiles and shit
that 265K for $330 SGD seems interesting
the B860I however isnt- Its like all the Z890Is just disappeared
The sudden ARL interest is fun
I just think it’s funny to buy into platforms I spent the last year talking shit about
Can’t ever let em know your next move
Was interested in ARL- Just that they had horrible bundles
you TC2 lads however convinced me to wait NVL
All right, everything is ordered, I can't wait to see how it does. Hope the write speed isn't too slow lol 64TB is 44hrs at 400MB/s 💀
#tech-chat-2 message
Thank you guys so much for your help, I'll show you the finished results when it's complete
I suspect a lot is the sudden price drops and the improvements to the internal clocks
I mean just on LTT TC2 alone
Up at 325 am because my daughter woke up and threw up... Oh boy
oo whats the mini pc for?
and where are the drives going into (I haven't been following)
Was told it was necessary to do transcoding of media from the Synology that Snail recommended (DS1823xs+)
guys got a warranty replacement of my g274qpx for mag274qpf x30mv . do i go for it
@merry stirrup at least my mem OC was more stable then this
one good thing about modern times is that budget cases at 40 euros look way better than the budget cases of that price range 15-20 years ago 😄
Not bad
Bro its cincinnati
Ik but it’s like the third MC trip ive blasted by one doing like 20-30 over and they just do NOT give a fuck
"This poor fucker just bought another Macbin, we will let him go"

savage
You guys are my favorite haters
without haters how do you strive to be better?
We're totally just helping you out
real
bro my car is dirty af but tbf it snowed like a day ago but RAHHHH MICROCENTER

anyways I hope you enjoy the platform 🙏
Bawls required
That’s what I’m really here for
I knew it, mac likes balls

bawls bro bawls
Oh cool, Arc Raiders is getting proper duos matchmaking
did anyone tell Michael I’m about to be an ARL pleb
God dammit warship that one was funny
I might buy some fans while I’m here too if they have any decent ones
I wonder if I could sell the z890 AYW to a random in the parking lot
ayo?

Fairly recently too
Pretty nice to see Micro Center expand their custom WCing inventory
Why are there so many middle aged men in this parking lot holding their laptops like a sick child walking up to stand in line at the door
My running joke is... any hardware launch day, we're all lined up like morons, but theres like 8 men aged 60-75 who are mistakenly waiting in the launch line only to want reams of paper
I had a dream that I found an open box 5070ti for $375
But it was a ventus
lol bro
When i camped out over night for my 5090 the next morning I told the dudes around me "Wait until you see the dudes showing up at 8AM for reams of paper" - no one believed me
seriously tho wtf is so vital to your day to day life that you’re standing outside a microcenter waiting for it to open at 9:57am on a Wednesday

mf what are you doing
I’m here to buy cool shit
But I’m sitting in my car till they open
Like a normal person
you already ordered right, just pickup?
Yeah I’m chillin
Bros are hustlin for 10AM open to get a USB cable for too much money
It’s a 2 hour drive back home and I have to be at work in 3 hours. That’s why I’m here before they open. I’m valid.
I haven't bought a USB cable in years
call off
What are you buying
wait I thought you lived much closer to MC
Told bossman I’d probably be late cause I’m “going to buy cool shit in Cincinnati” and dude said “ok”
I might pick up one of those Apex CPU blocks and those X-Flow rads sometime (though would late on the latter since MC is just recently starting to get stock)
nice
my boss is great ngl
He let me leave like 3 hours early to go buy my 5090
buy him some bawls
lol bro dudes in here “where are the flash drives”
someone def needed to install windows last night and lost all their drives
Wait the 265KF is just $249 here. Do I just bail on the bundle? @topaz veldt
Bundle is $349 with a board I need to sell after
would you ever downgrade it to a nas or smth
7700x is my NAS rn
Let the experts do their job
if you ever plan on making it your nas cpu get the K
if not 265KF is fine and good money saved
what if I am the expert
You’re a high school kid buddy
jorj I am in college
AMD Ryzen 5 7500X3D is now official AMD’s budget 6core CPU for gamers costs $269. Source: ComputerBase/AMD AMD has now made the Ryzen 5 7500X3D official. The new CPU targets budget gaming builds with a launch price of 269 USD (279 EUR, 245 GBP), while still bringing the same 64 MB stack of 3D V […]
Bail on bundle bro
I did
I was under the impression the cpu retailed for $300 not $249
I was planning to sell the board quick for like $100. That just skips that entirely
5nail, what happened to the TUF?
Also MC rep confirmed they just aren’t selling Apex’s anymore
I bought the last one this store will ever see
also I just sent Floppa a banger pic
Another microcenter exclusive?
Oh 5070ti is now technically below msrp
*$20 rebate card
Honestly the black ventus looks fine
-100Mhz from the other MC Exclusive 7600x3D
So if a coworker asked me for PC part recommendations, out here in the PNW, 7600x3d simply isn't an option and 7500x3d probably won't be either?
i think so, only available in a gaming pc atm
send here
I mean arrow lake is ass but at least I can order it from Newegg/Amazon/best buy
damn
At least all the regular AM5 CPUs are available at real retailers
whoa, did you just suggest MC wasn't a "real retailer"?
and more importantly, that arrow lake was ass?
I don't believe in regional B&M chains
😤
does he get kicked out of the club
Oh that was a lie
I love a real memory controller
I need to have a conversation with the board but the outcome is not looking great
kinda confused what slot the pcie cord goes into on my psu, it says cpu/pcie so does that mean i can use it for both technically or am i stupid
mmmmmmmk
fuck yeah lol
Your microcenter is on a farm?
LMAO yeah
Mac officially lives in bumblefuck
It’s Ohio idk what you guys expected
No
He lives 2 hours away from bumblefuck
damn
who took the picture
Ohio humbles me
My Sentra
Actually my boss bought some real estate near the Intel Ohio site before Intel put that on hold
tell me you didn't setup the camera on a timer lmao
a fellow sentra user
RIP
Video and then export frame
lol bro
Also Navy can you tell someone at Intel to look at my internship applications k thx
This is what the S pen was for
They were all Lip Bu Tan'd
:(
I'm supposed to get a bonus next month and I am highly considering a Z fold 7
Or do I invest it all and wait for Z fold 8
upgrade to 5090
or buy 200+ gt210
Anyone wanna give me $80 so I can return this PNY and get a gaming trio OC
is 509.50 CHF or 638.86 USD a good price to buy an acer RX 9070xt or do i wait until black friday and hope for a better deal?
yeah that seems aight
Oh wow
5070ti review headlines were awful
I forgot this thing launched at basically $900
how's it been treating you
ok so what ports can i use for the new gpu cables for the 5070, this is my exact psu, one of the gpu cables already runs directly from the psu itself
you have two CPU/PCIe combo ports
one of them will be needed for the CPU
leaving you a single port
now, with a 5070 on a quality PSU a single port using a standard daisy chain cable is probably fine but.. what PSU is that
wait, you have 3
nzxt c650 80 plus bronze
sorry the weird pin coloration on that middle one threw me off
semi modular
yea i found this online cause i couldnt get a good pic inside my pc, sorry
so yeah, 3x PCIe/CPU headers.
One for the CPU then the other two are free for the GPU
5070 should have a 2x PCIe to 16-pin adapter in the box
ok, so can i use for 1 of the 2 cables the one thats running directly out of the psu? and then get a new cable for the other one?
PSU hopefully came with another cable
Sorry on this IBM call
alright ill go look, if it didnt is there a cable that i could buy?
either direct from NZXT (contact their support) or hope someone like cablemod supports that specific PSU
@hoary hatch What I posted on another site regarding 5090 TUF OC: https://www.overclock.net/threads/official-nvidia-rtx-5090-owners-club.1814246/page-1155?post_id=29523702#post-29523702
for the price of cable mod you could just get a new unit
😂
so i found a cable labled psu on it, looks like another pig tail type cable, i can use that and just use the main port right? i can send a pic of it if it helps
don't use any unknown cable on the PSU that you aren't 100% certain was for that specific PSU
it was in with the other cables for the psu, sorry forgot to say that
ok. yeah if you want to be super safe, two individual cables then one of the pigtails from each into the two inputs on the adapter
ugly, but free
buying a fully custom cable or just a new PSU can come later
ok, the 5070 comes with the adapter so i can jut plug in the two 8 pins right
Cl26 kitt 🤌 tight is right
yep, one from each of the cables
ok thank you much appreciated
Also if I was a nvidia dev id be searching for the error for the line of code that failed the driver error does seem to indicate it myte be a coding fault. But hopefully they can find the part or maybe just reprogram it (reading snails post) especially with furmark chugging away
i focused on the output of that error for a while but the truth is its just a crash error, the path and file references mean nothing unfortunately
Reading comments now but yeah thats a funky one, glad asus and friends where quick to say they'd try and fix it
jesus christ, apparently DDR4 RDIMMs have skyrocketed in the last 3 months
We'll see what they come back with
Yes - believe it or not, DDR3 also
I just realized one of our HyperV Hosts needs more RAM before adding more virtuals
and the fuck lol
yep
Jan/feb: 35-40 bucks a stick
Today: 150-200
NO! NOT MY DDR3!
Mhm
mac just dissed me in dms
I was going to throw out some DDR3 32GB 4Rx4 shit
How else am i supposed to be 1-3TB of ram for cheap!?!?
its him, middle finger up, holding a Z890 apex
he shared it here also
@edgy laurel how dumb is this "MOUSE5" overlay I can't even see the firemode
i'll pay shipping + the price of a 6 pack of cold ones for em
How do you think I buy spare 5090s
Crime
DDR3 4R shit doesnt run on anything fun or normal
I assumed you're just loaded
Poor investors
it'll run on my shitty LGA2011 dual socket system
well yeah but
currently you don't lol
but why
You go back to january to get cheap RAM rofl
big number funni
time to move to DDR2 for my funny RAM numbers /s
AI is a bubble lmao. Although there are exceptions where AI can be incredibly helpful. Just my view
i refuse to feel bad for investors in AI
maybe funny ram power draw
good thing i don't pay for power
i can send you 6 DDR3L 8GB sodimms
but then i'd be at 1.6666dpc for 48gb more
that would only push me to 560gb in my stupid NAS
I have a bunch of DDR3 to chuck
thats a fun bug
Table made out of ddr3?
modern art?
Use it as flooring?
Floppa got the uncropped pic tho lol
ddr3 as an epoxy floor would be fire
5nail lacks imagination
roflmao: A Newegg Business seller is listing a 180$ stick of DDR4 ECC RAM with the phrase "NOT FOR HOME PC!"
NOT FOR HOME PC! real shit
basically every ECC vendor has to add the "DONT PUT IT IN YOUR DESKTOP DUMBASS" warning
my T5810 is the opposite
except it works with normal dimms anyways so fuck you dell
based
no chip in the photo minus points
im going to delid this 265k when refresh comes out
gonna destroy it
@topaz veldt get a rig with a 265k and oc board be competitive its fun
@shell void buy tachyon
It's not just your view, I think AI is overvalued rn
I can just swap CPUs out of my plex box
buy me the board and i'll OC everyday
this is basically what i meant
next gen i will consider giving it to you for oc purposes
oh i'll buy NVL on launch dw lol
z790 tachyon x
why don't we use ECC on normal desktops
close!
its just annoying and I am down a PC right now so... I am tired
i couldn’t help but notice that has an 8 after the z instead of a 7
it should still work dw
more cost than it's worth
bios update or something
there's basically zero benefit for most desktop applications
you can if you want to, it’s super based
also yeah, AM5 has ECC UDIMM support
i’m still leaning towards going W980 + ECC for Nova Lake
I know, but if we adopted it the costs would surely come down
hella based
Not really, when you add complexity you inherently add cost
that would be a cool platform
you are going to pay the most money for your computer and have the slowest
ECC is inherently more complex than non-ECC
I think there's a market for people who would pay for slower RAM if it was ECC
then
