The Apple Silicon SoC's are standard ARM CPU's, with extra instructions for interacting with the SMC. Interacting with the SMC is critical for smooth operation of a lot of hardware features. However a lot of the SMC instructions are:

1 - Not publicly documented

ARM is an instruction set. Its assembly code is referring to its instructions.
The Apple Silicon SoC's use the ARM instruction set, and appear to an OS as a standard ARM CPU.

However, several of the hardware features of the MacBook (including but not limited to: Current sensing, LAS precision, TrueTone) specifically require communication between the SMC and the CPU in order to work. The problem is that a lot of this requires special SMC-specific instructions which Apple designed into the SoC as an ARM extension, that are just not accessible. The result is that you can get some of the features to work, but not nearly as well as they would on MacOS. That isn't a driver issue, it's a fundamental limitation built into the SoC by Apple

if the HDMI/DP was plugged below the audio ports, that's your dedicated GPU. If you plug it above those audio ports, it's your IGPU

So like an apple world obviously an extra 8 gigs is worth a lot more than $360 if you were to try to configure a machine.. and then obviously you're getting a processor with double the minimum Ray bandwidth more GPU cores more CPU cores..

The question is is it "unnecessary" if I'm running like windows VM for office and stuff (LONG STORY, yes I know Mac technically has office we're not allowed to use it)

However eMAC and Snow leopard being my last real everyday use of Mac.

Well if Vantage plays nice and ACTUALLY disabled dGPU, about 1.5hrs ... Much less than the 5 reviewers were seeing at 200nits and I was running 80 nits.

With dgpu just idled we can do about an hour.

That's in the quiet mode which limits the CPU power to 45 Watts Max. And I'm using chrome the whole time.

Exactly what I said. Hoe took my G14 with my 8 TB rocket in it ... To say I was displeased at loosing $4k machine that I absolutely adored is a massive understatement! I even overloaded the ports and the SSD all at the same time and I had zero bottlenecks in the system I don't know how they did it but I was able to Max every port and the SSD protocol concurrently.
