but then again, this is just a very simple NAS so it powers on, copies over stuff from main server, then powers itself off. If i would lose data from main server, i have a copy. So it is just for safekeeping, an extra copy. I didn't need anything fancy from it, but it needs multiple hard drive support 😄

90% of the time it worked great

the other 10% i’d disconnect and have to play at 1024x768 30fps for the rest of the game on my laptop

shell void
#

idk wym

pure garnet
#

your hwinfo looks like win 98 to me on my phone

edgy laurel
#

what

green marsh
#

anyway, i used NVMe as boot device on Z77 and Z87 boards which had no native NVMe support. I think i had to enable UEFI storage initialization on the Z87 board inside CSM (if i wanted to use CSM), but that was the only issue i ran into.
Ironically a H81 board with single x16 slot and three x1 slots had native NVMe boot support 😄

shell void
#

i used scaling at 1440p too so i dont even know what hwinfo looks like unscaled

pure garnet
#

the discord text looks fine it’s just hwinfo that’s weird

#

i’ll see if my zephyrus does it too in a bit

shell void
#

text looks a lot worse without scaling in 99% of apps, but rarely an app will be blurry or pixelated with scaling

pure garnet
#

the dual mode restocked so i’m heavily considering just ordering it

pure garnet
edgy laurel
#

i wouldn't stand for blurry/pixalated text

#

and I don't get any, so thats good

shell void
#

it makes the text look a lot better in 99% of programs and windows itself

#

110ppi 100% is so pixelated

pure garnet
#

is windows still jank with diff res displays at scaling

#

i’ll have 1440p+4k if i get this

shell void
#

not really a ppi thing though tbf, text is still really obviously pixelated with 27" 2160p at 100%

edgy laurel
edgy laurel
shell void
#

multi monitor is scuffed in general in windows even with equivalent monitors

edgy laurel
pure garnet
#

do the windows change size in any weird comedic ways

#

or is it normal now

shell void
#

1440p 100% and 2160p 150% are close enough to where it shouldnt bother you

#

I paid for all these pixels, I want to stretch out and use them!

shell void
#

theyre getting 27" 2160p and have 27" 1440p monitors rn

#

27" 2160p with 150% scaling is the closest to matching 27" 1440p 100%

edgy laurel
#

27! no comment

pure garnet
#

i wanted 32 but i’ll just wait for oled

#

and deal with mixed sizes then

#

but the 20k hours gl83a is starting to not turn on reliably

edgy laurel
#

I wish my old 3008WFP had an hour counter that I could have seen

shell void
#

the thought of using two 32" monitors on a shelf desk makes me itch

pure garnet
#

nah i'll do 32+27

green marsh
#

27" 1440p, 32" 4k is the minimum size i would accept

pure garnet
#

oled side monitor is a literal death sentence

#

i leave 2 apps snapped like 80% of the time

#

then a youtube video the other 20%

shell void
#

i do that 95% of the time and ive been on oled for 3 years without issue xd

#

with all protective features disabled

edgy laurel
#

I don't think i'll ever be able to put videos on a side monitor. if i'm watching youtube i'm watching youtube, front and center

pure garnet
#

i can't imagine the display will not have the snap line burnt in if i leave it like that all day

pure garnet
#

4k 100% downsized to the 1440p panel is the worst text i've ever seen

shell void
#

yeah supersampled desktop looks so ass

pure garnet
#

well then

#

should i just reboot first

shell void
#

you can sign out instead of rebooting after changing scaling

#

but super sampling the desktop is always gonna look like shit

pure garnet
#

no i mean the settings app taking up my entire side monitor

#

i know the res changes look like trash

#

okay so windows just has to rescale it after

#

if i don't move it over fully then i get the comedic size

vestal granite

depends on the monitors

and what you call a lot of watts

edgy laurel

monitors use power. more monitors use more power.

lethal topaz

64GB i5-8500B (mac mini, for Linux experiments)
16GB Macbook Pro (on the go, or if i need to do Mac stuff)
16GB mini PC as my router
16GB Z77 ITX as HTPC
16GB Z77 ITX as backup NAS

green marsh

topaz veldt

The other thing worth mentioning is when you see like 1 DIMM purchased that is usually a small business with a singular bad DIMM they are willing to pay whatever to get a matching PN#

#

look for lots of like 8 - 24 DIMMs, that gives a more reasonable "price" if they actually disclose the sale

#

most of the "lots" are "best offer" and you'll never really know, but I just sold 32GB 2400T 2Rx4s for like $30/ea a few weeks ago

#

That's up from about $23-24/ea

# inland wind That’s some fucked up shit for a network provider

Depends. If this "transformer station" were powering network equipment along the plant (between the hubsite / CO and customer), then it's quite common to only have one power source. An ISP cannot reasonably demand the local power company provide 2 power feeds to every single piece of their equipment in the field... thus they really should be using a UPS to provide back-up power to every piece of their equipment.

lethal topaz
#

the infastructure is fiber and not copper

#

and my speeds are symmetrical

inland wind
#

I’d have to say it’s sadly a common practice

inland wind
indigo walrus
# lethal topaz wireless fiber is kinda goated tho i have 6 ping and good speeds

So... what you actually have is likely a Fiber-backed WISP system? (Point to Point wireless.)

You quite probably don’t need fiber at all

brave panther

Righto, so not Fiber then. But still can be very good if the WISP provider knows what they're doing, which it sounds like they do if you're getting symmetrical speeds and really low latency.

rich idol

if i'm using a GPU for encoding, does it really matter whether i get an AMD or intel cpu?

edgy laurel

no

#

well, thats a weird question since you said "get". If youhave "get" something, get intel

#

then no need to power and cool a 1080ti

pallid marsh
rich idol
#

was thinking of just getting a cheap 16-thread cpu, as for compression with handbrake, thread count matters apparently

edgy laurel
#

only if you're using software encoding

#

and if you're just using it for streaming video, you really wouldn't

#

a task a GPU can do much faster

rich idol
#

i see

pure garnet
#

if you’re buying a cpu get an intel one because you can use quicksync and it’ll be better than the 1080ti

edgy laurel
#

though handbrake is a bit weird in that it offloads a lot to the CPU even when using NVENC. if just using NVENC through jellfin the GPU handles it all

pure garnet
edgy laurel
#

yeah that actually annoyed me a little when I sold my 7900x for a 7800x3d
