Unfortunately the only block today for the 5090 Master is the Alphacool, but we're gonna give it a try

why is it usd

green marsh
# edgy laurel Oculink?

the workstation boards are all weird more or less. Like a B850 one still has RAM at top, 24-pin at top, internal USB 2.0 header, no idea what that connector above chipset even is etc

low sorrel

5 bucks usd ehh too lazy to buy now

topaz veldt
low sorrel

ngl microsd on a board is smart, you can use it for an automated recovery env if you need to rapidly repair/reinstall windows

its microsd.

at the time i couldn't afford a used hdd

10€ was too much

edgy laurel
gentle urchin
compact tree
#

esim on motherboard frfr

wise bear
#

makes more sense to have a uSD slot than a cell modem..

compact tree
#

are there any egpu users here?

edgy laurel
#

I'd like to assume most people here are smart enough not to bother

wise bear
#

egpu is kinda dumb

compact tree
#

egpus are great for specific usecases

edgy laurel
#

Its adding layers of compromise on to something already heavily compromised

compact tree
#

my point being specific usecases

#

in my case i need a laptop with a powerful cpu for college but i don't want a big fat gaming laptop

#

and i only play games at home

merry stirrup
#

the cost of a decent desktop that can game and a laptop to remote is probably that cost

compact tree
#

and when you have a 1600€ laptop an egpu is cheaper than a new pc

pure garnet
#

so keep a desktop at home

edgy laurel
#

argument is that buying just the GPU and a dock is cheaper than the rest of the parts

compact tree
#

yeah

merry stirrup
#

why do you have a 1600$ laptop that doesnt have a dgpu

low sorrel
#

hey hey hey

merry stirrup
#

did you get scammed

compact tree
#

got a ryzen ai 9 365 in my laptop already which is powerful enough

edgy laurel
#

which might be true.. but you're just heavily limited in what sort of GPU you can support over Thunderbolt. support as in make use of

low sorrel
edgy laurel
merry stirrup
edgy laurel
#

I wouldn't want a dGPU in there either

low sorrel
#

this is perfect for my discord and redditing using needs

#

and stardew valley

merry stirrup
#

why would you pay 1600$ for a browser computer

low sorrel
compact tree
low sorrel
#

bulid

edgy laurel
#

$1600 for a well built do everythign that requires a computer but game machine

#

which is something a lot of people would find attractive that travel all the time

fringe vigil
merry stirrup
#

let me google the msrp of a surface before i keep talking hold on

low sorrel
#

i probably should have bought a mac

fringe vigil
edgy laurel
#

just look at nearly everything Apple makes

merry stirrup
#

okay nevermind

#

i have the highest end variant

compact tree
#

the best options in that market are the hp elitebooks or recently omnibook ultra (not flip)

merry stirrup
#

my deepest apologies

low sorrel
#

the surface is chronically over priced

merry stirrup
compact tree
#

and i paid 150€ for my egpu enclosure that has a 850W psu

merry stirrup
#

i paid a whole clean 50$

edgy laurel
#

Base M4 MBP 14" is $1600

compact tree
#

630€ for a 9070 XT

merry stirrup
edgy laurel
low sorrel
#

nothing

merry stirrup
#

i mean that is kinda my point why buy a laptop so expensive for doing typically desktop work

low sorrel
#

also the last 10 people that have bought laptops that i know

edgy laurel
#

point is, premium thin and lights without dGPU's exist and have buyers

low sorrel
#

are buying macs

compact tree
#

i basically need no gpu power

wise bear
#

except for gaming

edgy laurel
#

now, i'm not arguing that eGPU's make sense.. so dont get too excited

#

been a while since I looked at tests showing where the bottleneck of Thunderbolt starts

compact tree
#

good battery life while moving (5h min) and good cpu performance while plugged for rednering and 3d design.
also light and well built is important
it is kinda the perfect use case for an egpu

edgy laurel
#

Does the laptop have Thunderbolt 5?

compact tree
#

honestly egpus are very very very very niche and only make sense in very specific situations

edgy laurel
#

and do they make Thunderbolt 5 eGPU docks yet

low sorrel
merry stirrup
#

i dont think a thunderbolt 5 dock is going to be 150$ with a power supply

low sorrel
#

yes but they are stupidly expensive

compact tree
merry stirrup
edgy laurel
#

so TB4/USB4 you're limited to 40Gb/s

low sorrel
compact tree
merry stirrup
#

allat to get the full power out of my 9060xt

compact tree
merry stirrup
#

do laptops have rebar on by default yall reckon?

compact tree
#

tb3 is theoretically 22,5 gbits because it does 32 gbits max and around 10 gbits are reserved for usb and stuff at all times

#

tb4 around 27,5 gbits because 5gbit reserved and the rest is overhead

low sorrel
#

do you have oculink

compact tree
#

usb 4 is same as tb4

#

with 1 exception

edgy laurel
#

Effectively you're running any GPU at Gen3 x4

merry stirrup
#

lol

#

pcie1 x16

compact tree
#

USB4 PCIe Gen4x4

vale cosmos
#

i found a TB4 dock for $25 at my unis surplus store, kinda wish I picked it up, but I got a nice stereo receiver instead

edgy laurel
topaz veldt
#

A vendor just asked if I want to go out to sushi tomorrow for lunch -- hmmm

compact tree
#

there are currently 2 egpus that support it and it only fully works on amd systems

wraith steeple
green marsh
compact tree
#

you get effectively 38,5 gbit compared to tb3 22,5 gbit which is huge

pure garnet
#

all of this screams "buy a desktop instead"

compact tree
#

adt ut3g and ag02

compact tree
#

like 99,99%

merry stirrup
#

i think it means buy a desktop and a weaker laptop like i said

low sorrel
#

buy an sff pc

pure garnet
#

you could've gotten a laptop without the 395+ for browsing reddit in lectures

#

and then just had a tower at home

merry stirrup
#

remote into big rig for rendering and cpu work

merry stirrup
#

or probably not even cpu work

merry stirrup
low sorrel

compact tree

bulid a small sff pc and portable monitor

you had the money though

that'd be fire

with how greasy that mouse is you're worried about the skates?

vestal granite

holy crap $500 idea, what if: keyboard with slide-out mousepad

3070Ti in a Velka 5 is impressive

low sorrel

ziptie a screen onto mini PC

it's actually pretty solid, the simulations can take some time, but actual modeling is smooth

i know sometimes you guys are like "oh you" when i say stuff like this but unironically ziptie screen onto mini pc and then you have a perfectly portable machine

topaz veldt
merry stirrup

how are you going to look at it properly

vestal granite

the mini PC is the stand

merry stirrup

are you going to build it a retractable stand

with render i mean the actual Rendering Tab which pins the cpu at 100% when you use it

merry stirrup

i mean thats the point

wise bear
topaz veldt
merry stirrup

is it slow though lol

vestal granite
merry stirrup

yes now imagine craning your neck to look at that for 4 hours

okay its peak now

vestal granite

problem solved

low sorrel

okay wait now integrate the keyboard and mouse and power supply and battery into it

vestal granite

or doorhinge on top would be better maybe

vale cosmos

yes top hinge not bottom

low sorrel
merry stirrup

nah its better

vestal granite

no you lay the PC flat and prop it up like that

merry stirrup

you can flip the screen to show someone in front of you

the HINGE is not important
