The switches are all on "IOT SSID".... Then it clicked...

Not exactly. So I didn't know I had a "Matter Hub" in my Google home speakers. Those speakers were on primary wifi - say 192.168.80.0/24. But I had "IOT" network, also DHCP to 192.168.80.0/24. So I figured they are on the same network this should all just work - I didn't even know Matter had a hub. I thought it was going out over the internet. It clicked to rejoin the Google speakers to the IOT network, despite already being in the same network. It clicked that the Google Home is the hub and does some fuckery on the wifi channel itself.

Yeah its just that apparently whatever protocol Matter is using, it does something on the wireless channel. My Google Nest Speakers being on a different SSID, for whatever reason, could not reach the Matter devices once provisioned. It could see them up front (IP based), it could register them to Google Home, but once registered they were offline to the device. Matter is a local protocol... so it just clicked for me on this call.
