Nice.

A recent Steam beta client update announces: "Performance Monitor now supports CPU temperature on Windows and Linux. On Windows this requires a kernel mode driver, and there is an optional to disable if you don't want that. The driver is only installed and running when Performance Monitor is visible at full CPU detail levels and only if you don't disable the driver in the In-Game settings."

Stupid samsung making their TVs so thin

  1. used, good condition NUC12DCMi7 (intel NUC 12 extreme)** 980 or 1,076.29 USD **
  • I7-12700 12 core
  • Samsung 980 PRO M2 1TB
  • Kingston fury renegade m2 4TB
  • intel arc b580 that i guess ill take out 🤷
can also probably get this one for $980 after talking to the seller
  1. i buy the minisforum um790 pro new 1116 USD
  • minisforum 833 USD

  • R9 7940HS, better wattage since its a laptop cpu but worse performance than the i7 as stated

  • 32GB 5600MHz RAM

  • 1TB M.2 (with space for another one im pretty sure)

  • for reference 4tb m2 is 283 USD for me
seems to be a worse CPU, better RAM, rest idk

those are the main ones
then there's also

  1. ASUS NUC 14 Pro RNUC14RVKU700000I 1230 USD

barebone with Core Ultra 7 155H and get the rest separately
barebone is at 791.15 USD
just over 300 for the storage in total
130-140 for the DDR5 memory

-# here are the links i would buy from if u wanna have a look (norwegian sites) https://www.proshop.no/Stasjonaer-Mini-PCBarebone/ASUS-NUC-14-Pro-RNUC14RVKU700000I/3275263 https://www.proshop.no/Stasjonaer-Mini-PCBarebone/Minisforum-MINI-PC-Minis-Forum-UM790-Pro-Ryzen-9-7940HS-32GB-RAM-1TB/3345948 https://www.finn.no/recommerce/forsale/item/415046426?ci=3

i'd use it as cloud storage for 3d and video files and probably some note taking, i wanna try to set up video streaming which would be 4k HDR to a tv and/or to a galaxy tablet though im thinking this may be handled by a firestick?, an occasional minecraft server host, preferably capable of handling a heavy modpack like atm or rlcraft, these modpacks are particularly heavy.
maybe some other game servers sometimes, discord bot host, website host
Also if i went with the used one i guess i could use the dgpu from the used pc (which i didnt include in the price estimate, the gpu is around 400$ maybe a bit less) as a tiny render farm for blender 3d projects, though this is not at all necessary just a little bonus 🤷

im also kinda new to this so would explore for more to do

#

this is what i need help with ^

pallid marsh
wild trench
#

that a good cpu? i dont know what these are 🙈

#

cpu speed and cache sizes look big

pallid marsh
#

Newest one if I recall right

wild trench
#

that looks like a great buy thanks

#

one issue, may not be one but may be one

#

amazon is kinda iffy where i am, and ill need to pay a 25% import tax. that brings the number to about 1275 if we also take into account the lower storage, still seems like it could be worth it, what do you think?

pallid marsh
#

Why list things in us dollars if your not in the us

wild trench
#

cuz itll be easier than everyone converting NOK to USD

pure garnet
#

yeah but it makes stores worse

wild trench
#

either way most things are more expensive here so you'll have to apply at least some offset to any price expectation you had anyaways

wild trench
#

so $1200 for this thing then, still better than the other ones? either way thanks for the suggestion

#

also i am absolutely open to getting desktop a cpu as well i just want a good all-round option for price convenience in size/noise and be sure that it can handle what i described

wild trench
#

still probably import fee idk. 875 usd before import fee if there is any. is aliexpress safe for these kinds of purchases?

pallid marsh
#

Yeah they have a pretty good customer service

wild trench
#

i mean thats definitively the best so far if its without import tax but i dont think it is 😬

#

the import tax stuff for norway is confusing idk how it works but i think its safe to assume itll be on pretty much anything over like $1-200 or something

#

maybe they got live chat and can answer 😂

pallid marsh
topaz veldt

south shuttle
#

well, from my experiwnce with their phones and monitors, etc. lg tends/used to price stuff way too high and then drop the price by 50% in less than a year sometimes, unsure if that’s the case for their microwaves and home appliances

topaz veldt
#

I meant met one of the fishermen/captains/owners of the Bill Fisher which is the one that displaced him to second place

south shuttle
#

not 50% for their monitors, more like 30% because they sell decently, but with their phones

#

they used to do 50% off before a new gen has been released

topaz veldt
#

@edgy laurel his sport boat's out of Jupiter, Florida when he has it. Brought up to like North Carolina and Maryland to do this competition every year

@topaz veldt the asus monitor legitimately spontaneously died while i was using it with less than 6 hours of power on time

#

i would tell you if i bumped it or spilled on it or whatever

#

i am astonished

it went blank while i was just watching youtube and leaving back in my chair, and now i can’t get it to display from any source, not even its own OSD

edgy laurel

edgy laurel

Well, back to Best Buy.. I guess?

shell void
#

the monitor gets power and i can tell that it’s receiving a signal because it wakes from sleep, but nothing is displayed

frank cypress

it was about how sony imageworks developed their SPEAR GPU renderer

but they went really into the weeds about how it works and how they optimized it and they used so much acronyms deadge

frank cypress

frank cypress

they're in LA next year

option 2: GMKtec EVO-X1 $1067

option 3: used intel NUC 12 extreme, good condition $980

turbid locust

ah.

topaz veldt

turbid locust
#

I think my goal is a home server via proxmox so I would be having (probably jellyfin) in a container

topaz veldt
#

plex/jelly as a container is not a good idea

turbid locust
#

ugh

#

Well how would one set up a "all in one" home server then?

indigo walrus
# turbid locust is it like that everywhere?

Depends on the carrier. Those that do charge aren't gouging either - signature on delivery increases operating costs as the delivery driver must spend an extra 30-90 seconds (on average) getting a signature when they could be delivering the next package. This is likely Newegg passing on the cost to the consumer.

topaz veldt

@turbid locust the one huge, persistent (no pun intended) issue with running things like plex and jellyfin in containers is hardware pass thru

turbid locust
#

I see

topaz veldt
# turbid locust I see

and like... the more "so...why?" topic is - the data within a container is supposed to be ephemeral. So, where do you store the media then?

#

So you take a framework made for quick "dev-like" spin-ups with complex dynamic overlay networking, etc., etc, you have to do NATs, reverse proxy, etc., and... for why? One container?

#

Also - then you need to either mount your media inside the container each time you pull it (every time you do an upgrade you pull a new image which will not have your data in it) or you have to make a docker compose file with externally attached storage.... so...... why?

hoary hatch

topaz veldt

If you don't have the interest or capacity to learn how things work on Linux docker is great because bleep bloop blop "I run containers"

#

but you abstracting hardware transcoding away from the service, in fact, more than a VM would, so no its under no sun "better"

#

If I had like 40 plex/jellyfin servers (and thus had to spend most of my time hiding from the authorities) I'd run docker so I can pop them up quick

turbid locust
#

My goal was to have a “do it all” machine but if it would be a pain then… meh

topaz veldt

Preferably something that wouldn’t be completely miserable for a noob lol

topaz veldt

proxmox is kind of miserable from having experienced other platforms, but its free and sort of well documented

#

Proxmox 9.0 GA ships with zfs 2.3 which supports adding disks into existing vdevs

turbid locust
#

I’ll have to look into ZFS

#

I’m completely oblivious to all this kinda stuff which is why I wanna get into it tbh

topaz veldt
#

yeah zfs is a filesystem that will allow you to have redundancy

#

think of it as "enterprise grade" software RAID

turbid locust
#

does it have like.. a gui KEKW

topaz veldt
#

no zfs inherently does not have a gui, but that's what TrueNAS / Proxmox is

turbid locust
#

I’m not scared of CLI but… I’m a visual learner KEKW

fervent elm
#

That usually gets setup by a connected computer

topaz veldt
#

yah thats the thing - like... all of these core techs exist as barebones linux/unix frameworks and then people come around and put front ends on them

vestal granite
#

and the people who make the frontends are geniuses

topaz veldt
#

which is totally fine... but it does require you know some basics about it to be successful

topaz veldt
turbid locust
#

Alright so theoretically could I get away with not an Intel cpu

#

I can throw a gpu in

topaz veldt
#

You could but you'd be buying more hardware

turbid locust
#

Well the goal is to not buy more hardware which is why I want to use my AM5 shit in the first place

topaz veldt
#

yes but

#

you could sell anything AM5 w/ GPU.... and build a 10th gen intel i5 and go faster

#

I went from Xeon v3/v4 plex VMs/physical to "hey, I have a spare 7950X" to "sell all that shit and buy an 11600k"

turbid locust
#

Sidenote does core count really matter for enthusiast/home server type shit? I’d want to do media and maybe like self hosted services like VPN, password management, etc etc

topaz veldt

yeah, it can

#

Do you need like 20 cores? no

turbid locust

could I get away with like… 8

turbid locust
#

Word

fervent elm
#

The only thing that really needs core numbers is virtualization

topaz veldt
#

that's what we're talking about

fervent elm
turbid locust
topaz veldt
#

And mac at home, vcpu overallocation of like 4:1 or 5:1 is "acceptable" usually

#

meaning you could have VMs provisioned (btw containers run on VMs...) with a total of like 32 vCPU assigned and only have 8 actual threads and experience acceptable performance

turbid locust
#

Yeah I get that

#

Well 10th gen i9 has 10 so

topaz veldt
#

But at the same time if you have one VM with 8 vCPU that actually pounds... then you could also have no overhead allowed

#

10 and hyper threading

#

so it'd show up as 20 vCPU capable

turbid locust
#

Word

topaz veldt
#

which is quite solid

turbid locust
#

what’s the cheapest 10th gen i9 KEKW

topaz veldt
#

soooo

#

before you go down that route

fervent elm
#

X79 12 core

topaz veldt
#

the only reason I recommend Intel desktop is because of iGPU. You should ask yourself do you actually need to transcode

turbid locust
#

5nail you know me, I could be entirely over this idea in a week KEKW

topaz veldt
#

People will say "No, my TV is 4K and my media is 4K I don't need to transcode evar"

#

but what people do not realize is that sometimes subtitles enabled is a transcode, sometimes audio formats is a transcode

fervent elm
#

Even then you could get an a310 or a380 and do better esp if you have the am5 shit already
Cheaper than a 200$ 10900

turbid locust

topaz veldt

#

like, my entire ARL plex box drawsl ike 80w

brisk jolt
topaz veldt

yeah these are the things that come in to play - and then further, an AMD CPU doing audio/intro detection is going to need full blast power to be fast, which mens the cooler is gonna rip

turbid locust
#

frick

topaz veldt
#

so like... the all-in-one-nas-plex-server-thing can't be near the tv you're trying to watch on

#

meanwhile you'll read people buying retail NAS with ARM CPUs running Plex/jelly in docker and "have no problems". 🤣

#

"btw I only watch 2 channel video on a stereo tv at 720p"

fervent elm
#

What about an amd apu?
Like an 8700g or smth

topaz veldt

zero value

brisk jolt
fervent elm
#

Vs a regular igp?

topaz veldt

plex and jelly don't support that for transcoding

fervent elm
#

F

turbid locust
#

Yeah besides I would want the PCIe slots for a PCIe SATA card and whatnot too

topaz veldt
#

(and the apu doesn't do it well anyway)

topaz veldt
#

so like... if i can be completely honest

topaz veldt
#

you can do it all in one box but its very strategic

#

or you can build a low power NAS/virtualization box and then do a small transcoder out of an intel something

#

like a dell sff makes a great plex transcoder

fervent elm
#

12th gen Intel is dirt cheap on the low
12100 box could work

topaz veldt
#

10th gen and 11th gen are more than enough

fervent elm
#

True

topaz veldt
#

people use i3's

#

there is a matrix of supported transcoding/encoding features - like if you need av1 (you don't) then I think you need 12th or 13th gen

topaz veldt
turbid locust
#

Oh a separate machine for plex transcode? DANger

topaz veldt
#

build nas box out of what you have on hand

fervent elm

Ah
A 10100 is like 50$ on ebay
Cheap 1200 board
Could work

topaz veldt
#

and then buy a like $80 dell SFF box off ebay

turbid locust
#

okay that opens up a new question then: is it fine to do a raid array via container or

turbid locust
#

tbh idk what I’m asking

topaz veldt
#

lol thats ok

brisk jolt
#

I understand like 10% of this conversation

topaz veldt
#

so your storage, unless you are very experienced, should not run from out of a vm/container

#

I would run TrueNAS on the nas personally

turbid locust
#

Can TrueNAS do other shit

topaz veldt
#

then whatever small intel plex box you find just connect that via nfs or cifs

turbid locust
#

can TrueNAS do self hosty shit

topaz veldt
turbid locust
#

sick

topaz veldt
#

You can run a "container worker node" like an Ubuntu VM on TrueNAS, and then do all your fucky container shit in that VM

#

TrueNAS is not as flexible as a hypervisor as Proxmox, but both are imperfect for that to be honest

#

so the clunkiness on both is about equal

molten iron
#

hey i have Helldivers 2 installed, and I downloaded the Helldivers 2 Mod Manager from Nexus Mods. The website said the file was safe, so I downloaded it and have been using it to add visual/audio mods to my game. I used VirusTotal for all the mods I installed, however, I decided to throw the .exe file for the mod manager into VT and found this:

I have had this thing installed for nearly 7 months now...

#

I have never personally heard of these 2 antiviruses, however, I did a scan with malwarebytes and specifically selected my storage device where i keep the app, and it said it was clean

turbid locust
topaz veldt
#

on vSphere

turbid locust
#

Scary

topaz veldt
#

well think about it

#

so TrueNAS is not a great hypervisor, but it has the best way of managing storage

#

so I put a like 240 GB SSD in a server with 24 bay backplane connected to an HBA. Installed ESXi on 240GB and the TrueNAS boot volume on that 240GB datastore. Then passed the HBA thru to the TrueNAS VM, it sees all the real disks in the server, and then I present that back out to the host that it lives on via NFS

turbid locust
#

I’m gonna pretend I understood wtf you just said

topaz veldt
#

Then, I could mount the storage that the TrueNAS VM managed, in the server itself, back to the server itself, and VMs on that

#

LOL its like storage inception

turbid locust
#

I’m not in a position to be buying all the storage and whatnot right now anyway, but want to make a build and have an actual separate “server” machine as I think I’m more likely to commit to it vs having some random tower under my desk

topaz veldt
#

so do you want like consumer grade shit or an actual server server

turbid locust
#

Because I’ve played with proxmox and self hosted stuff in the past and eventually lost interest because the hardware setup wasn’t there/got overwhelmed

topaz veldt

turbid locust

topaz veldt
#

has nothing to do with hardware pass thru

#

windows netboot is exhausting btw

#

i would not count on pxe booting your win11 install

#

that situation is so completely fucked any more

turbid locust
#

makes sense

fervent elm
# turbid locust Also how do cache drives work

Theoretically theyre supposed to be able to pull from a number of slow drives to then push it to you quickly but ehhh unless youre throughputting a lot of drives you don't need it (iirc)

topaz veldt
#

it wholly depends on the filesystem/array type

fervent elm
#

Late night bs from me it is then
Auh

topaz veldt
#

but something like truenas/zfs there is a write intel log (ZIL) that writes to RAM before it writes to disk (this makes it fast) and then there's L2_ARC which is a read cache, which almost does nothing ever at all

turbid locust
#

How much does ram matter

#

In terms of capacity

topaz veldt
#

depends on how much storage and the use

#

if you had 100TB of storage I'd say you prob want like 256GB of RAM in a lab

#

but if you have like 24TB you would be fine with 32GB

turbid locust
#

Cool

topaz veldt
#

the fun part about ZFS memory reqs is... you only need as much memory as you can fill up while it drains

#

so like... if you have 1 Gbps network, you can technically use very little RAM because you can't write data fast enough over the network that the RAM can't put its contents to disk as fast

#

there are caveats and such but that's generally how it works

#

in ZFS if you allow async writes (meaning the data gets written to RAM, THEN disk) you get insane write performance despite the actual storage config. If you have sync writes, you will write to RAM and disk in parallel and that will suck

#

but so if you have like 10 - 25 Gbps networking and like 10 clients hitting it, 32GB of RAM could fill and not drain down to a shitty like 4-disk ZFS pool fast enough

devout ridge
#

if you do async writes, have a good UPS

topaz veldt
#

or don't care

devout ridge
#

what about those precious linux ISOs you’re storing?

topaz veldt
#

They can be redownloaded 😉

#

you won't lose anything thats stored, just in flight

devout ridge
#

Fair

topaz veldt
#

if your writes are so crucial then you'd run sync and or not be jank

#

some methodologies don't have a concept of sync/no, like iSCSI

#

iSCSI is all async by definition

#

those are zvols though not datasets

topaz veldt
#

truenas needs like 12-16GB of RAM to be good, so 16GB excess woudl let you run a few VMs in addition

turbid locust

Yeah I plan to throw my 32GB H16M kit in

topaz veldt

thunderbolt too good to give up

Amd laptops can have Thunderbolt?

#

Thunderbolt is just a chip you can slap in wherever you want

#

Slap some PCIe and a display out from your igpus or dgpu and boom Thunderbolt and some extra power

i love it when you buy a monitor arm that can support your monitors weight and then it slowly looks at you dissaprovingly

#
