It works 4 hours at a time right?
At first yeah, but now that it's been used a bit more it happens pretty much instantly
I just have to go into a different menu and it shits the bed
Why not the new 43watt Rx 7400?
is amd gonna give me one or sumn
That fuckin sucks man
yeah it's good guy amd
just call up lisa
Yeah, first big boy TV and this happens, but C'est La Vie, at least I have warranty
truue hollon i got her on speed dial

fortnite ebay gaming computers in today
employee's child
the crap prebuilt ones with rgb leds on the front and the fortnite girl in the picture yes
HP pro desk with rgb 🔥
basically this but a little better/different
Can I see the dead pixel spot
it for some reason had a 3TB HDD
and 128GB king fast drive
basically i replaced all of it, 6500 to 6700, gt 730 to a k1200, kingfast drive to a 256gb micron drive
oof
gets worse depending on the pixel shift but it's def there
Who pinched it
Nice.
A recent Steam beta client update announces: "Performance Monitor now supports CPU temperature on Windows and Linux. On Windows this requires a kernel mode driver, and there is an optional to disable if you don't want that. The driver is only installed and running when Performance Monitor is visible at full CPU detail levels and only if you don't disable the driver in the In-Game settings."
idk, but my roommates opened it so it's their fault
Stupid samsung making their TVs so thin
I want a thick properly cooled tv
i geniunely hate it
picking up my oled shouldnt feel like its going to break down the middle with 2 people lifting it
theres just no reason for the tv to be that thin it is a hazard more than it is cool
imagine the brightness
yeah the thickness on my LG is the bare minimum, Samsung makes their shit way too thin
@edgy laurel just met the winner of this year's white marlin tournament, beat Jordan by 1 pound
OLED monitor sure, make the top half thin who care, the base is usually thick enough, but I shouldn't have to be Indiana Jones to pick up my TV
literally
Nice, though I don't know how Jordan is.. should i?
anyone wanna help me buy a pc 👉👈
no
Give me your credit card and I will do it for you
bet
#23 bro
Just ignore the $150k order from bestbuy when I get it
no worries, see those pop up all the time on my bank statements
- used, good condition NUC12DCMi7 (intel NUC 12 extreme)** 980 or 1,076.29 USD **
- I7-12700 12 core
- Samsung 980 PRO M2 1TB
- Kingston fury renegade m2 4TB
- intel arc b580 that i guess ill take out 🤷
can also probably get this one for $980 after talking to the seller
- i buy the minisforum um790 pro new 1116 USD
-
minisforum 833 USD
-
R9 7940HS, better wattage since its a laptop cpu but worse performance than the i7 as stated
-
32GB 5600MHz RAM
-
1TB M.2 (with space for another one im pretty sure)
-
for reference 4tb m2 is 283 USD for me
seems to be a worse CPU, better RAM, rest idk
those are the main ones
then there's also
- ASUS NUC 14 Pro RNUC14RVKU700000I 1230 USD
barebone with Core Ultra 7 155H and get the rest separately
barebone is at 791.15 USD
just over 300 for the storage in total
130-140 for the DDR5 memory
-# here are the links i would buy from if u wanna have a look (norwegian sites) https://www.proshop.no/Stasjonaer-Mini-PCBarebone/ASUS-NUC-14-Pro-RNUC14RVKU700000I/3275263 https://www.proshop.no/Stasjonaer-Mini-PCBarebone/Minisforum-MINI-PC-Minis-Forum-UM790-Pro-Ryzen-9-7940HS-32GB-RAM-1TB/3345948 https://www.finn.no/recommerce/forsale/item/415046426?ci=3
i'd use it as cloud storage for 3d and video files and probably some note taking, i wanna try to set up video streaming which would be 4k HDR to a tv and/or to a galaxy tablet though im thinking this may be handled by a firestick?, an occasional minecraft server host, preferably capable of handling a heavy modpack like atm or rlcraft, these modpacks are particularly heavy.
maybe some other game servers sometimes, discord bot host, website host
Also if i went with the used one i guess i could use the dgpu from the used pc (which i didnt include in the price estimate, the gpu is around 400$ maybe a bit less) as a tiny render farm for blender 3d projects, though this is not at all necessary just a little bonus 🤷
im also kinda new to this so would explore for more to do
this is what i need help with ^
if anyone have other buying options feel free to suggest them, those are the ones ive got currently

Newest one if I recall right
that looks like a great buy thanks
one issue, may not be one but may be one
amazon is kinda iffy where i am, and ill need to pay a 25% import tax. that brings the number to about 1275 if we also take into account the lower storage, still seems like it could be worth it, what do you think?
Why list things in us dollars if your not in the us
cuz itll be easier than everyone converting NOK to USD
yeah but it makes stores worse
either way most things are more expensive here so you'll have to apply at least some offset to any price expectation you had anyaways
yea, i have mentioned it previously tho
so $1200 for this thing then, still better than the other ones? either way thanks for the suggestion
also i am absolutely open to getting desktop a cpu as well i just want a good all-round option for price convenience in size/noise and be sure that it can handle what i described
https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005009099997732.html 8.8k 32gb 1tb
still probably import fee idk. 875 usd before import fee if there is any. is aliexpress safe for these kinds of purchases?
Yeah they have a pretty good customer service
i mean thats definitively the best so far if its without import tax but i dont think it is 😬
the import tax stuff for norway is confusing idk how it works but i think its safe to assume itll be on pretty much anything over like $1-200 or something
maybe they got live chat and can answer 😂
I added a Norway address and it came out to this.
i dont believe that price 👀
waaat
i think you may pay it when you pick the parcel up though
i hate the import tax stuff idk when i need to pay it or not 😭
Is this like a thing he does? I’m completely unfamiliar
The all mighty ai told me it should be added at checkout.so idk
talking to their CS now
does feel like a 1v1 doesnt it 😂
yea defo will be paying import fee, applies to everything over 3000 NOK ~294 usd
well, from my experiwnce with their phones and monitors, etc. lg tends/used to price stuff way too high and then drop the price by 50% in less than a year sometimes, unsure if that’s the case for their microwaves and home appliances
Oh yeah he runs like an $8 million Bayless 72 or 90 ft
I meant met one of the fishermen/captains/owners of the Bill Fisher which is the one that displaced him to second place
not 50% for their monitors, more like 30% because they sell decently, but with their phones
they used to do 50% off before a new gen has been released
@edgy laurel his sport boat's out of Jupiter, Florida when he has it. Brought up to like North Carolina and Maryland to do this competition every year
🤣 i’m savin this
LG is always having sales at my company so it tracks
@pallid marsh i mean these still seem like viable options. what do you think?
so are they still doing the high msrp strategy?
Catch 23 is a fully custom, cold-molded sportfishing yacht designed and built in Wanchese, NC. This vessel is powered by MTU 2600 HP engines
the amazon one comes to $1200 when all is said and done and the aliexpress one (with 32gb ram 2tb storage) comes to $1,067.03
Yeah and bundling vacuums with shit
@topaz veldt the asus monitor legitimately spontaneously died while i was using it with less than 6 hours of power on time
i would tell you if i bumped it or spilled on it or whatever
i am astonished
it went blank while i was just watching youtube and leaving back in my chair, and now i can’t get it to display from any source, not even its own OSD
seriously
holy shit the last nvidia sessions was so technical 😭
wild
as serious as a heart attack
legitimate spontaneous unexplainable death
Istg I only understood 15% of it
i wasn’t even touching my peripherals i was leaned back in my chair
Well, back to Best Buy.. I guess?
the monitor gets power and i can tell that it’s receiving a signal because it wakes from sleep, but nothing is displayed
it was about how sony imageworks developed their SPEAR GPU renderer
but they went really into the weeds about how it works and how they optimized it and they used so much acronyms
i’m going to let it sit unplugged overnight and if it’s still blind tomorrow then back to Bestbuy i go
thinkin of just getting an exchange for another or na?
how does this happen
tbh no i’ll take the refund option if possible
but if i’m forced into an exchange then whatever
should've sent it off to a therapist 😭
the brightness and refresh rate are nice but the C4 just has a magical black level in all lighting conditions
and is better calibrated
TBH I thought you were going to hold out for the WOLED model
i wanted to but the october delay annoyed me
but I guess while its out in some places, still a ways off for us?
i guess this is my punishment for being impatient
or is it just the 165Hz variant that some regions got?
i’ve only seen people be able to buy the 165 so far
but reviewers got sampled the 240hz
this was a good joke. deserves some recognition

someone got warshipped couldn't even tell who
I think i heard some interesting info about ILM while I was there
apparently they use the apple vision pro with some custom software for previs there?
like to share their work for review and stuff for live production (I.e mandolorian)
was this show local?
I thought that was a bit fascinating
Siggraph yeah
they're in LA next year
or it's not really local I guess, they just jump around year to year
and they have an Asian version
I meant local to you this year
which is in HK this year I believe
oh yes, it's in Vancouver this year
rip
i wonder if the weirdness i saw earlier was a warning sign
got an Nvidia hat too from the sessions as well
what was that again?
Its not a 6000 blackwell WS edition but I will take it
worth the entry fee
not when it was free for a lot of people 💀
nvidia literally had a code for a free pass on their website
I only found out after I paid

i got this error after i updated my graphics drivers, and then there was stuttering and artifacting for a minute

well thats bizarre
yeah i’ve never seen that error before
that makes three dead asus products for me lol
two boards and this monitor
didnt the board also murder a few of your ssds too
or was that a diff company
yeah the strix took my 4tb 990 pro with it

asusbad
tbh i’m not too upset just yet because i wasn’t in love with the monitor anyway
oh dope
if i’m not allowed to get a refund then i’ll be sad, but until then whatever
already?
yeah it just committed seppuku with less than 6 hours of power on time
its been 1 day bruh
do not run thermal paste through the wash
Need help figuring out what pc to buy
I want a pc to be used as a server / not primary computer for cloud storage for 3d and video files and probably some note taking, i wanna try to set up video streaming which would be 4k HDR to a tv and/or to a galaxy tablet though im thinking this may be handled by a firestick?, an occasional minecraft server host, preferably capable of handling a heavy modpack like atm or rlcraft, these modpacks are particularly heavy.

holy yap
dawg whatttt
that is crazy michael
we are both going through defective display troubles
Stay strong my brother I got your back 🫡
and it messed up your 6900 xt, what a board
he said ur back not ur sides
this is going to get burried in 5 minutes. use the forum or #1106613567966429224
chat i think this is a sign, we both bought qd oleds and both had problems
this is further proof that woled is superior
inferior tech fr fr
Weird
Probably because it's QD OLED
that’s what i’m saying
5nail has joined the cause
(I will continue to use the S90D if it gets fixed)
ok ok not bad not bad
qd oled killed my ips display
I like it
yuhhh
was looking at a qd oled just now lmfao, but apparently they arent good for eye strain
should have gotten mark to sign it smh /s
haha ill ask him tomorrow
he's really swarmed over there
people kept coming to ask about the GB10
nvm actually a woled, still both bad for eye strain apparently
nah woled is eye friendly
this is extremely anecdotal evidence about failures, I like the panels, but I will agree WOLED on tandem OLED on paper will be better
"our" mark?
eye strain reports with woled are rare
doesn’t it make letters look weird?
Oh I am sure lol, poor dude
QD-OLED does because of the sub pixel layout
on the 1440p models it’s not amazing yeah but all 1440p monitors have crappy text
ahhhhh
it’s just not a high enough resolution
on 4k itd be fine then?
yes
if you can't get a refund just chargeback tbh
I used a 1440p QD-OLED for months and it was fine
But now you need a 5090
charging back bestbuy and getting banned for life 🔥
there is no way Michael doesn't get a refund
😭
the man himself
I never did get the whole weird text thing. been 2.5 years on OLED now
i have a 4080 coming on thursday, guess ill have to send it back:(
no more FE cards for you (not like you could ever buy them cuz of bots)
If I get real close to my laptop I have issues with it, screen door effect, but have to be close. QD-OLED def had the issue at 1440p
clearly your old person eyesight can't see it
Funky M
whats the problem here
looks like letters on any display you zoom that far into
i don’t really understand it
well the letters not being sharp isnt good for your eyes apparently
huh
text looks mad fucked up on my C4 with the wrong scaling set
it’s not like i’m squinting at my monitor
thats just a pixel density issue no?
have you compared this to an LCD of the same pixel density or are you running blind here?
idk because they were talking about 4k monitors in the vid i watched
ill have a look ig there are any comparisons, rn im running shitty 1080p ips
I can see 4 people in this chat in the last 2 minutes that daily OLED monitors
I only daily oled phones 😢
meow
WOLED's and QD-OLEDs
mreow
he probably will tbh
maybe theyre just blowing the problem out of proportion
the P version of the middle one is what i was gonna buy
it is indeed not that deep
from what I gathered its just woled superiority
according to this chat

idk i don't know what it's like to own either because im too busy buying shitty 2080tis
iddk chat do i have a woled
i have qdoled and im fine with it since I dont have flashbang lightint
the p version would be woled so i guess it wont be so bad
just worried about my eyesight
If you want good text go E ink
mate you're probably overthinking it
silly little things keeping people away from greatness. meh, their loss
I saw someone saying their tn monitor is better than their oled monitor was while they had it
damn thats a huge difference
110% a troll
https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005009099997732.html
anyone know what the ram speed is here? seems like its 2900mhz from the picture but i didnt think that was a thing for lpddr5x?
I'm single-handedly using my monitor like a normal human and experiencing pure monitoring
Make monitors display pictures again
On drugs or legally blind
theres another pic saying 7500
looking at it now isnt the woled better than the ips lmao
makes more sense 🤔
All Oled is better then ips
don't you think the now 5 people here that daily OLED's would have told you this was some huge problem?
i refuse to acknowledge their opinion about HDR if they main TN
I think their argument specifically pertained to for esport use
the world needs ditch diggers too
but i refuse to believe it's better than an oled monitor for that either
the grass is greener here
yeah i just like making 100% sure by asking a billion questions before doing anything
Maybe I'm too sober to understand this
MobLand. Good show (i'm currently binging). Tom Hardy stars, drives an RS6
play kerosene
Oh sweet, I'll dow.... stream it and see how it goes
not kid friendly.. or maybe even wife material lol
Stream it from the original provider paramount
paramore plus
i guess since so many people have a oled monitor here i might aswell ask if anyone has a PG32UCDP currently
oh apparently my paramount plus already has it
nope
argh
fuck that
monitor ruined
Matte screen > screen that won't turn on
How to ruin your monitor in one simple trick
Ok frick you bud not cool
oof, timely
too soon
i'm giggling out loud over that
apologies all
but it was funny 5nail
@topaz veldt did u get mum’s lg c5 installed?
frick you, but it was funny
yep she's enjoying it
spectacular
unfortunately the C5 and G4 have different remotes
im confused so is woled matte? or is matte/glossy a completely different thing
https://www.paramountplus.com $13 for a month for no ads and downloading!
the new remote seems like a downgrade
Asus chose to make that one matte, like its sister from LG (and LG Display makes the panel used in both).
@edgy laurel I can only find servers on BF4 where I have like 100ms ping
its kind of.... simpler but also ... it has like an AI logo instead of a microphone, so that was fun
really? hold on..
so expensive
WE LOVE AI
Yeah it's all german or french servers lol
don’t worry i’m not a clanker apologist
Is it me or is Mafia: The Old Country kind of a flop?
yeah I guess you're right.. I didn't even look at that. Didn't have any issues though
nothing but a silver back number crunching clanker
copper veined rust buckets
all i heard is you cant swim
one of my favorite movies of all time, still a clanker
I am getting bodied by these german players that have clearly not gotten off the game since 2017
ask Jorj
pretty good filter system, like a real server browser should
Wall e is a monster
hol up wall e gets a pass cause he's cute
Oh Ja und jetzt wir shitten on der Mac
you can air strafe like a mf in BF4 why do I not remember this
also this game is using almost all of my 8 p cores lol
He gutted his fellow robots for parts
apple tv remote mogs all tv remotes
they dont need it no more
if there is one thing I always remembered, BF games utilized the shit out of your CPU. always have
i mean... ugh, dreams
they're all clanker filth
cute RC boat
AppleTV mogs*, everything about it is fantastic in tvOS26, it just looks and feels great
lmaooo
i’m still on 18.5 or something
Try finding a free one during the next hurricane
is OS26 out of beta yet
isn't the ingame server browser kinda ass and your supposed to use battlelog or smtg
Give me audio passthrough you cowards \
naw these won't be free in a hurricane
public beta atm
60' walk around is unreal
The only issue I have had is that albums won't load in apple music when selecting from my recently played
i’m guessing it’ll be pushed to the stable public channel when the new phones launch
when tf did they change several people are typing to multiple people are typing
The AppleTV apps and Apple Music are absolute delights on AppleTV
@shell void @merry stirrup any point of disabling intel igpu or
yuh
if OCing high it can f with shit
If we get a new AppleTV this year I will buy in a heartbeat
i always disable whatever i’m not using but that’s just a freak thing
in the case of RPL the iGPU is nice for quick sync but if you're going for max clocks its going to fuck ya up, if you were to put a display on the igpu you'd see it corrupt video output pretty quickly
what new features\ are you looking for?
audio passthrough + HDMI 2.1
that's all i want
Better ai Upscaling
upscaling and auto HDR could be hype
i’m expecting the next apple tv to have 10gbps usb c, wifi 6e, and AV1 support
Burn Your feet on the grill
10gbps for what
shenanigans
To access your legally downloaded media on your server
lol
i have no use for the 10gbps usb c
i’m just expecting it to have it because it’ll be using an a17 pro soc most likely
which is from the iphone 15 pro which had 10gb usb c
yes give me a full 40 gbps port on the AppleTV
i want infiniband
AppleTV is already so good I can't really think of much more they could add, other than support AV1 and WiFi 6e like michael said
they could add Google Store app
i probably won’t upgrade my apple tvs because they’re fine
I am a broken record lol, but if the audio passthrough is actually good on the new one I will buy one
the old one becomes a coaster
is it time to replace my 2nd gen
motherboard tracking is in all chinese so I have no clue
I guess when I start seeing english words, it's close
yes
3rd lga 1700 board?
2nd
get urself a 5090 while ur at it
praying for 8200
apparently my chip is artificially capped at 8000
Zen 4? yeah
it may be yes
2nd gen uses A12 bionic which is an iPhone XS so you won’t get tvOS26 support afaik
the 4th gen launching this autumn will be your move
this means no liquid glass tv
no bro i have the 2nd gen
the one with the a5
720p max output
funny little apple TV.. Nvidia where that Shield 2 at
the actual 2nd generation yeah
last i booted it up youtube and netflix worked fine
apps were old and ios 6 era but played back okay
720p max output is jokes
fr
🔥 ❤️
remind me what happened to it again
the c4 is fine, it’s just taking a little nap
rn a 27 inch monitor is the closest i have to a tv
the XG27UCDMG committed seppuku
wish they'd chance the class logos back to the old ones ngl
i wouldn’t mind a tv but that’s more money than i wanna invest rn
michael reinforcing my thoughts to not buy an asus monitor
watching videos on a 27” on a desk is cozy
it just looks weirdly small in games
when i first loaded up cyberpunk i was like wtf
but that ppi is good tho
nah like i have a 27 inch monitor on my dresser with a fire stick on it
its like in the 160 range
and creative pebbles for speakers
i remember when you first got that C4. you specifically noted that the size was part of the wow factor
it’s really gamechanging for a game like cyberpunk
i imagine it’s similar for single player RPGs
Wsg chat
embarrassingly I couldn't tell you what the old ones looked like
works out that most of those, at least I, sit back with a controller
oh, yeah I guess that makes far more sense lol
27” is comfy when you’re leaning forward with gamer neck to play a FPS game, and when you fullscreen a youtube video
or even the BF1 ones
but it looks goofily small for a game you wanna relax and play
I like BF1 more I think
I love 32 inches
32 4k would be cool for ff but i wouldn't want it for comp stuff
BF4 logos but with BF1 Assault logo
crazy how your display died of no valorant though
I mean I wouldn’t mind a 4K tv as a monitor honestly.
But 1440p 32inches is pretty solid
i played one game of swiftplay on it and i had to scooch the monitor up to the edge of my mouse mat
1440p 32" sounds awful
It’s better than my 1080p 32 inch tv I was using.
Also no it isn’t 😭
well, thats true..
mike u wanna play val
no monitor rn mac
oh?
once i have a screen on my desk again yes xddd
where did the c4 go
i’m in bed and i just have the assumedly broken XG27 sitting unplugged on my desk
the C4 is taking a nap in the hallway
if the XG27 still doesn’t respond tomorrow then i’ll box it back up
wait it died wtf
RIP
yeah it didnt even make it through an 8 hour shift
i had around 6 hours of screen time and it died
wtaf
For real
my room must be haunted
do u have a ups?
maybe your house has really dirty power?
i do have two UPS yeah
what an amateur
straight paranormal activity
17k hours on my gl83a
I think I just hit like 350 on my C4
didn't realize how red it was till i got the omen though
11384 hours 😳
spark out here with nine million hours on his c2
lol ive had my C4 for roughly 6 months now I think
bought new in Jan 2023
i have 2100 on the c4 42
350 hours in 6 months aint bad
that’s very little usage
job moment
"I paid for the full monitor so im using the full monitor"
stop slurring
if the monitors had issues by these low hours i'd be concerned
one day microled or whatever will take over surely
if I can math (which i can't) that works out to 12 hours a day, almost on the nose
i’m fine with 10k hour lifespan but 6 hours is crazy
job, employment, 401K, workplace, application
bro is really getting his money's worth
buying a new phone every time it dies type shit
i've had my side monitor since covid and i leave it on whenever i feel like it
if i got an oled thing would have the final fantasy ui burnt in by the end of the month
barely under what my C4 sees... a week
you know what the sad part is, It cost almost half of what my previous monitor cost. that thing was absurdly expensive
I dont see myself upgrading until there's a 240Hz version lol
doesnt exist
adjusted for inlfation?
adjusted for inflation, its a nearly $1800 monitor
and with how far monitor tech has come, today, its kinda shit spec/performance wise
its wild frrrrr
g4zmn for example, has slight issues but $400 for a thousand zone miniled monitor
Mafia is just Indiana Jones with a different texture and model set
fortnite is just apex but different
tru
Every game is just a different game but different 😔
no its literally the same game
The only pc games i ever play prolly are less than 4
How do you guys get to enjoy games ??
the better the pc the less games you play
True
work hard play hard something something
I trie
Am just hard
I know the feeling
real
so true
Well ig i could venture out to the sims world as she always plays sims 4 and i do nothing i mean thats on option
cyberpunk raytraced really stands out
I feel like for some games, i am trying to get immersed in a fictional war and not irl, so why play something that looks like irl
is the i7-8550u considered overkill for programming?
I have more joy in building pcs than actually using them for gaming lol
My intel 4004 is good for programming you are good
I too have immense joy when I make a build on pcpp then never make it
damn whats intel 4004
fastest chip on the market
Yes
tf it's the first chip
typing some text in a text editor?
nah like actually compiling it
programming really requires intensive testing on ur local environment
does your compiler make use of multiple cores?
will be an L
but when i move onto like c programming, i think it will be multi threaded
or, really it doesn't matter. if you're compiling then no, your 7 generations old mobile chip isn't "overkill"
im not too familiar with c for now so im also not too sure
ah but it should still be sufficient? or it's time for an upgrade
up to you, no idea how whatever you do runs on it or if it is acceptable for you'
"programming" is far too generic of a term
well atm, i do web dev which uses reactjs (if u know what's that), so basically i have to run the client & server side, when i run both, my ram will usually hit 98% usage and completely freezes my laptop
but i think that's just insufficient of ram
this laptop has this chip you asked about?
yep the i7-8550u
And your laptop is freezing?
And you asked if the chip is sufficient? I think you have a different question
only a partial of the pixel will change to the new tab
it's more of like, is this normal for this chip to be struggling this badly, i'm sure this is a pretty good chip
not really
its an old mobile chip
damn i see alr
is doom eternal straight up eating vram for y'all?
so ig it's time to upgrade it
it do be a game
true
ok it just happened, so like im on a website
when i scroll up, half of my pixels just froze there for like 2s
idk how to explain it but it's just weird af
if u feel the need to sure
currently at amazon lmfao
ye something like this
is it a bug?
is it a bird
it could be a mammal

wow
idk why im here
i do
why
you know exactly why
lol why does newegg charge for signature upon delivery
is it like that everywhere?
they charge?
most couriers charge for signature upon delivery
most sellers don't opt for it unless the item is a high value item
I have to sign for phones but that's about it
I did have a free signature upon delivery from Newegg once years
Except the fucking FedEx guy showed up at 8:30am when I was in the shower 😐
lol
I spent 2 hours on the phone convincing Newegg to update the delivery to leave at a FedEx store for me to pickup
https://pcpartpicker.com/list/mJwjVF wdyt chat
i'm gonna switch out the 3060 12gb for a 3080 of the same price (used)
it's a 2hr flight away tho..
Part List - AMD Ryzen 5 7600, GeForce RTX 3060 12GB, NZXT H5 Flow (2024) ATX Mid Tower
weird
@topaz veldt Say I were to make a media streaming server with AM5 hardware, would I need a gpu for encoding? if so, what level of performance would I need. Goal would be potentially a max of 1-2 simultanious 4K streams.
yes you would
I did cpu-only based plexing for a while (plex as a VM on xeons) and it took a shit ton of cores to do anything at all
ah.
1080p was doable
I think my goal is a home server via proxmox so I would be having (probably jellyfin) in a container
plex/jelly as a container is not a good idea
Depends on the carrier. Those that do charge aren't gouging either - signature on delivery increases operating costs as the delivery driver must spend an extra 30-90 seconds (on average) getting a signature when they could be delivering the next package. This is likely Newegg passing on the cost to the consumer.
jellyfin/plex in a container seems to be wildly popular
I didn’t think it was that wild of an idea but I hadn’t researched anything about it either
it sure doesn't seem to be given how many people do it
PROXMOX
you bitches I said that
with virtualization and a gpu
or on a CPU with quicksync, more reasonably
check out how storage works from containers
whatever your friend likes
i mean, i'm not doing it i'm just saying if it was such a problem then people would be talking about it and not doing it
silverstone flp02
the reason they do it is because they don't know how to do it
the whole point about containers is "docker-compose pull plex && docker-compose up -d" and now plex is running
It seems to work for a lot of people, so it can't be all bad
see above
hes thinking a fractal north but wants to look at others
the entire point of a container is repeat deployments
ATX case*
cases are extremely subjective, so realistically only your friend can choose
the uninitiated will run docker from a container because "whats sudo?"
no I need some suggestions to forward to him
Ive suggested APNX V1, Evolv X2 lel
do these people actually utilize what a ATX motherboard has that a mATX doesn't
im giving him my ATX mobo
a vast majority of people that use ATX boards would be perfectly fine with an M-ATX board- oh that makes sense
@turbid locust the one huge, persistent (no pun intended) issue with running things like plex and jellyfin in containers is hardware pass thru
I see
and like... the more "so...why?" topic is - the data within a container is supposed to be ephemeral. So, where do you store the media then?
So you take a framework made for quick "dev-like" spin-ups with complex dynamic overlay networking, etc., etc, you have to do NATs, reverse proxy, etc., and... for why? One container?
Also - then you need to either mount your media inside the container each time you pull it (every time you do an upgrade you pull a new image which will not have your data in it) or you have to make a docker compose file with externally attached storage.... so...... why?
Well the ATX case market is fantastic right now so they're spoiled for choice
I wanna do a build in the evolv x2 ngl
Its just the "a lot of people do it so it can't be bad" -- right, a lot of people get burble tunes on their car too....
Yeah fair enough
If you don't have the interest or capacity to learn how things work on Linux docker is great because bleep bloop blop "I run containers"
but you abstracting hardware transcoding away from the service, in fact, more than a VM would, so no its under no sun "better"
If I had like 40 plex/jellyfin servers (and thus had to spend most of my time hiding from the authorities) I'd run docker so I can pop them up quick
My goal was to have a “do it all” machine but if it would be a pain then… meh
But yeah as someone who chases lazy devs around for 40,000 containers on the daily... ask me how I really feel
They'd fucking run calc.exe in a container if they could without any actual reason
thats called a hypervisor - containers can still exist, or not, but plex/jellyfin is not the best fit
did you guess 2 letters by any chance
So what would be my best option for a home server that does media and a couple other odds and ends
Preferably something that wouldn’t be completely miserable for a noob lol
you'd prob be best served by something with a desktop cpu from intel and like 6 - 8 sata connectors to run proxmox with zfs
proxmox is kind of miserable from having experienced other platforms, but its free and sort of well documented
Proxmox 9.0 GA ships with zfs 2.3 which supports adding disks into existing vdevs
I’ll have to look into ZFS
I’m completely oblivious to all this kinda stuff which is why I wanna get into it tbh
yeah zfs is a filesystem that will allow you to have redundancy
think of it as "enterprise grade" software RAID
does it have like.. a gui
no zfs inherently does not have a gui, but that's what TrueNAS / Proxmox is
I’m not scared of CLI but… I’m a visual learner
That usually gets setup by a connected computer
yah thats the thing - like... all of these core techs exist as barebones linux/unix frameworks and then people come around and put front ends on them
and the people who make the frontends are geniuses
which is totally fine... but it does require you know some basics about it to be successful
sometimes - othertimes they accidentially delete the zpool because they forgot something

Alright so theoretically could I get away with not an Intel cpu
I can throw a gpu in
You could but you'd be buying more hardware
Well the goal is to not buy more hardware which is why I want to use my AM5 shit in the first place
yes but
you could sell anything AM5 w/ GPU.... and build a 10th gen intel i5 and go faster
I went from Xeon v3/v4 plex VMs/physical to "hey, I have a spare 7950X" to "sell all that shit and buy an 11600k"
Sidenote does core count really matter for enthusiast/home server type shit? I’d want to do media and maybe like self hosted services like VPN, password management, etc etc
could I get away with like… 8
but for instance when plex scans media to find intros/outros 1 or 2 cores is going to take eons
depends
@turbid locust you are asking like "I need to move some trees could I use an F150?"
7700x lel
If your trees fit in an F150 you can use an F150
Is there any diff between 7700 and 7700x actl
Word
The only thing that really needs core numbers is virtualization
that's what we're talking about
200 mhz stock clocks
Well like that’s gonna be my entire use case basically
And mac at home, vcpu overallocation of like 4:1 or 5:1 is "acceptable" usually
meaning you could have VMs provisioned (btw containers run on VMs...) with a total of like 32 vCPU assigned and only have 8 actual threads and experience acceptable performance
But at the same time if you have one VM with 8 vCPU that actually pounds... then you could also have no overhead allowed
10 and hyper threading
so it'd show up as 20 vCPU capable
Word
which is quite solid
what’s the cheapest 10th gen i9
X79 12 core
the only reason I recommend Intel desktop is because of iGPU. You should ask yourself do you actually need to transcode
5nail you know me, I could be entirely over this idea in a week
People will say "No, my TV is 4K and my media is 4K I don't need to transcode evar"
but what people do not realize is that sometimes subtitles enabled is a transcode, sometimes audio formats is a transcode
Even then you could get an a310 or a380 and do better esp if you have the am5 shit already
Cheaper than a 200$ 10900
Nah its not
I have no fkin idea what the media is I’m planning to just rip my dads entire DVD and Blu Ray collection lmao
Go try using intel drivers in linux
how does Linux and/or virtualization handle E cores
it doesn't
so most hypervisors need e-cores disabled
You'd need to anyway with the igpu ya?
well shit nvm then
no - the discrete GPUs require kmods and or intel binaries while kernel support for igpu has been there for eons
Ah
You have to be on very recent kernels to get the intel discretes to work and my success was..... not very successful
But yeah like I’m assuming I’m gonna need to transcode
I was building kernel from source to get the b580 to work
Looks like my guy’s going an all AMD build
Like what Michael would say, “Im sorry for your loss”
yeah so if you want an efficient setup then an intel desktop cpu is golden, otherwise sure you can use an nvidia gpu but its a PSU and card and cooling and size requirement
AMD is totally fine its just hotter and more parts
1650?
Or maybe one of those lp 4060s?
I will likely be grabbing a Jonsbo N5
In all fairness he would be borrowing my 9070XT
So theoretically I can fit full size cards
yeah you probably could
but do you really want a GPU drawing like 200W to play movies?
like, my entire ARL plex box drawsl ike 80w
lol no
RTX VSR on max quality eats between like 130-200+ depending lmfao
yeah these are the things that come in to play - and then further, an AMD CPU doing audio/intro detection is going to need full blast power to be fast, which mens the cooler is gonna rip
frick
so like... the all-in-one-nas-plex-server-thing can't be near the tv you're trying to watch on
meanwhile you'll read people buying retail NAS with ARM CPUs running Plex/jelly in docker and "have no problems". 🤣
"btw I only watch 2 channel video on a stereo tv at 720p"
What about an amd apu?
Like an 8700g or smth
zero value
“My 5080 plays 4K Maxed out settings Path Tracing with no problems”
Indiana Jones:
Vs a regular igp?
plex and jelly don't support that for transcoding
F
Yeah besides I would want the PCIe slots for a PCIe SATA card and whatnot too
(and the apu doesn't do it well anyway)
a lot of boards have on board sata of like 6 - 8 ports which is enough
so like... if i can be completely honest
Lsi card in it mode
you can do it all in one box but its very strategic
or you can build a low power NAS/virtualization box and then do a small transcoder out of an intel something
like a dell sff makes a great plex transcoder
12th gen Intel is dirt cheap on the low
12100 box could work
10th gen and 11th gen are more than enough
True
people use i3's
there is a matrix of supported transcoding/encoding features - like if you need av1 (you don't) then I think you need 12th or 13th gen
where put the storage tho
nas box
Oh a separate machine for plex transcode?
build nas box out of what you have on hand
Ah
A 10100 is like 50$ on ebay
Cheap 1200 board
Could work
and then buy a like $80 dell SFF box off ebay
okay that opens up a new question then: is it fine to do a raid array via container or
tbh idk what I’m asking
lol thats ok
I understand like 10% of this conversation
Maybe you know? #tech-chat-1 message
so your storage, unless you are very experienced, should not run from out of a vm/container
I would run TrueNAS on the nas personally
Can TrueNAS do other shit
then whatever small intel plex box you find just connect that via nfs or cifs
can TrueNAS do self hosty shit
yes it can - it now runs Linux and can run KVM VMs like Proxmox
sick
You can run a "container worker node" like an Ubuntu VM on TrueNAS, and then do all your fucky container shit in that VM
TrueNAS is not as flexible as a hypervisor as Proxmox, but both are imperfect for that to be honest
so the clunkiness on both is about equal
hey i have Helldivers 2 installed, and I downloaded the Helldivers 2 Mod Manager from Nexus Mods. The website said the file was safe, so I downloaded it and have been using it to add visual/audio mods to my game. I used VirusTotal for all the mods I installed, however, I decided to throw the .exe file for the mod manager into VT and found this:
I have had this thing installed for nearly 7 months now...
I have never personally heard of these 2 antiviruses, however, I did a scan with malwarebytes and specifically selected my storage device where i keep the app, and it said it was clean
inb4 container in proxmox in TrueNAS container
soooo - I used to run TrueNAS in a VM with the HBA passed thru
on vSphere
Scary
well think about it
so TrueNAS is not a great hypervisor, but it has the best way of managing storage
so I put a like 240 GB SSD in a server with 24 bay backplane connected to an HBA. Installed ESXi on 240GB and the TrueNAS boot volume on that 240GB datastore. Then passed the HBA thru to the TrueNAS VM, it sees all the real disks in the server, and then I present that back out to the host that it lives on via NFS
I’m gonna pretend I understood wtf you just said
Then, I could mount the storage that the TrueNAS VM managed, in the server itself, back to the server itself, and VMs on that
LOL its like storage inception
I’m not in a position to be buying all the storage and whatnot right now anyway, but want to make a build and have an actual separate “server” machine as I think I’m more likely to commit to it vs having some random tower under my desk
so do you want like consumer grade shit or an actual server server
Because I’ve played with proxmox and self hosted stuff in the past and eventually lost interest because the hardware setup wasn’t there/got overwhelmed
Well full honesty idk lol
you got a rack?
I think I want to have the least financial burden as possible to start lol
so do a VM on AWS
accidentally spends 5 billion
nah - free tier for one year
old 2011 v3 server
yeah don't do that
What can one do with this
or if you do have the AM5 shit laying around just put it together with like a shitty sata ssd and an nvme drive
get exposure to networking shit and virtualization shit without having to plug cables in
dell r630 my beloved
Fair but that’s part of the fun, no? lol
Mm 200w
is it?
container people don't like plugging in cables
(I would argue they can't)
Also how do cache drives work
i like leaving my rack nice and tidy, and in another room, then sitting at my desk doing whatever the fuck i want with my rack via VMs and containers
you slot in drive, you list it as cache during setup, done
word
with a single person using a system nothing is "cached"
data access frequency is too low to do anything worthwhile
How miserable would it be to setup network booting on the same system
netbooyxyz
uh, you can’t…?
netbootxyz
lenovo used to ship tiny 16gb ssds with hard drives and call them cache drives
you need two systems afaik, one to host, one to boot from that host
from
yeah thats a container
like PXE boot from server
type shit
i got that shit
Would that not fuck with hardware pass through fuckery or
The goal would be to have bootable isos on NAS
so when I go to like set up a test bench or install windows on something I can just kinda not do the whole USB drive and Rufus thing
has nothing to do with hardware pass thru
windows netboot is exhausting btw
i would not count on pxe booting your win11 install
that situation is so completely fucked any more
makes sense
Theoretically theyre supposed to be able to pull from a number of slow drives to then push it to you quickly but ehhh unless youre throughputting a lot of drives you don't need it (iirc)
thats not how it works
it wholly depends on the filesystem/array type
Late night bs from me it is then
Auh
but something like truenas/zfs there is a write intel log (ZIL) that writes to RAM before it writes to disk (this makes it fast) and then there's L2_ARC which is a read cache, which almost does nothing ever at all
depends on how much storage and the use
if you had 100TB of storage I'd say you prob want like 256GB of RAM in a lab
but if you have like 24TB you would be fine with 32GB
Cool
the fun part about ZFS memory reqs is... you only need as much memory as you can fill up while it drains
so like... if you have 1 Gbps network, you can technically use very little RAM because you can't write data fast enough over the network that the RAM can't put its contents to disk as fast
there are caveats and such but that's generally how it works
in ZFS if you allow async writes (meaning the data gets written to RAM, THEN disk) you get insane write performance despite the actual storage config. If you have sync writes, you will write to RAM and disk in parallel and that will suck
but so if you have like 10 - 25 Gbps networking and like 10 clients hitting it, 32GB of RAM could fill and not drain down to a shitty like 4-disk ZFS pool fast enough
if you do async writes, have a good UPS
or don't care
what about those precious linux ISOs you’re storing?
Fair
if your writes are so crucial then you'd run sync and or not be jank
some methodologies don't have a concept of sync/no, like iSCSI
iSCSI is all async by definition
those are zvols though not datasets
1gbps network 🙂
yeah for home/lab use 32GB is plenty (if running VMs mostly elsewhere, too)
truenas needs like 12-16GB of RAM to be good, so 16GB excess woudl let you run a few VMs in addition
Yeah I plan to throw my 32GB H16M kit in
yeah it'd be fine
hmmm yeah I’ll go ahead and use my AM5 stuff. Gonna be starting with the VM and self hosted stuff first anyways. Storage and NAS later
yeah see if you even want to fuck with it
I’ll have to figure out my portforwarding situation and whatnot. Might have to give my isp more money for a static ip idk lol
adding it to the “fuckin google it, Mac” list
Just use tailscale for remote access
Tried it once and couldn’t get it to work
issue of skill
Wording it like that linguistically makes it to be a hardship of finding a trade or job to have lol
Okay. Ill tell you why I wanna destroy arasaka but Ill only say it once-
my laptop has the 9955hx3d i turned off half the cores i can also watercool my laptop: amd has pretty shity idle power draw but better effciency when it actually runs things. This means my poor 16inch laptop 80w battery only lasts like 1hour 30. If you looking for battery life laptop go intel. If you going for pure gaming where 3dvcache is used yes go amd. If your productive like in editing where you might need to have thunderbolt go intel. Heat wise this chip is a fire pit but all cpus 275k/285k and 9955hx3d are all portals to hell if you let it. meaning if i let my cpu go 99c/100c it can to hit max boost clock in games. Even when under AIO ill hit 90s i use x86 utility tool to limit how hot the cpu gets meaning it is infact limited on the clock speeds i went amd cause i wanted teh vcache for games where it isinfact like 10-25% better 1% lows when I do game. I dont know anyone who really wants a long lasting gaming laptop off the battery unless they intend to actually do alot more work on their laptop over gaming. Laptops in general automatcally kick in throttle mode if its unplugged.
I opted for remote desktop over that
If you looking for battery life laptop go intel
this isnt an all amd problem its an HX cpu problem, they use the same chiplet io die setup which is trash for battery life bc of the power to connections needed
the H/ HS/ ryzen AI __ branded ones are monolithic dies and dont have this issue
yeah i wonder why my laptop with HX eats battery
LOL you bought that hybrid laptop where you can plug in an AIO?
I remember seeing temps go higher on CPU on a review using that block
rewatched the review of xmg neo 16 with liquid cooler and it sustained 110w cpu 175w gpu at 90c and 70c respectively
without it they were both in 90c's while only having 70w cpu but still 175w gpu
And has some of the longest lasting laptop?
The reason yours is bad is due to the extra cache always needing to be powered on so the cpu never fully sleeps, also Intels 285hx and what not arrow lake laptop CPUs are amazing.
thunderbolt too good to give up
Amd laptops can have Thunderbolt?
Thunderbolt™ 4 with USB Type-C® 40Gbps signaling rate (USB Power Delivery, DisplayPort™ 2.1)
https://www.hp.com/gb-en/shop/product.aspx?id=A3ZH4ET&opt=ABU&sel=NTB
Thunderbolt is just a chip you can slap in wherever you want
Slap some PCIe and a display out from your igpus or dgpu and boom Thunderbolt and some extra power
?
The fact you don’t get it
isnt usb4 like required to be functionally identical to at least tb3
fun fact a lot of early x670 boards just used a thunderbolt 4 chip, guiltys does i think
yo chat would a 14.5" 3k oled laptop display be a huge diff compared to a 27" 1440p monitor
very
That laptop would be like 3x the ppi or some shit
ye but i think a larger display will always be better
well yes ofc it will
you will sit further away from it so the difference will not be as big
ye
at least twice the ppi
damn alr, but i think bigger size > higher ppi
cant notice the ppi if it isnt straight in the face
i think you shoud be hitting a pixles/arc second targets and fov targets over just ppi/size
