meanwhile i am still angry at all the wasted time caused by incompatibility of LSI card with Seagate Archive SMR drives. At least i got lucky that 1 of the drives died, so i needed only 3 free SATA connectors from the 3 available on the motherboard for the 3 drives i had working. On Intel SATA controller via SATA cable i copied 5TB of data no problem, on LSI it crapped out instantly

but it might be this old implementation of SMR which might be problematic for LSI i mean. Later implementations were somewhat more reasonable. Seagate Archive 8TB was the first drive to come with SMR, early bird issues i guess
