should i buy a 5070 for about 550 or should i spend 100 bucks more for a 9070xt?
i kinda want dlaa but im also wondering which is better in ray tracing and if amd has something similar to dlaa

tidal geyser
#

yea ofc amd has something like dlaa but well dlaa is still a lot better

#

what gpu you on RN? do you only do gaming and is that only on windows and so on

viral kayak
#

its clearly time to upgrade and retire the old king

#

for other parts i have a 850w power supply a 14600k and 16 gigs of ddr4

#

i mainly play games in 1440p

tidal geyser
#

how much more is the ti on top of the xt

viral kayak
tidal geyser
#

yes

viral kayak
#

im looking at elkjøps 5000 for 1000 rn so just give me a sec

#

the 5070 ti averages at around 11 to 14

tidal geyser
#

amd has just kept on disapointing, yes the 9070 xt is more than fine but nvidia just has so much more software and tends to have more stable drivers

#

oh wow the ti is like 3k (300$ ish) or smn more spensive

viral kayak
tidal geyser
#

way too much over the xt

viral kayak
#

i would agree

#

but thats just how the norwegian market is

tidal geyser
#

the 9070 xt is just faster and has more vram but the nvidia ofc has more software

tidal geyser
#

for the most part

viral kayak
tidal geyser
#

dlss is more supported, dlss is just better, more software is nvidia only, actual MFG and usable frame gen, reflex 2, more stable drivers, and they keep on bringing more software.

#

there is also nvenc and such

viral kayak
#

i dont think i will use dlss tho even if i had accsess to it

odd marsh
tidal geyser
#

yea

#

but it is still better

and some people report a lot better still even tho benchmarks say otherwise

viral kayak
tidal geyser

the main stunning effect OLEDs have on me is that fully dark to BOOM or whatever

odd marsh
#

my WOLED is pretty damn good during the day/lighting

tidal geyser
#

and i swear this qd-va 1000 nits ultrawide i have looks better in subnautica with auto hdr and whatever enabled

#

and since it also has local dimming it can have the wow effect anyways

viral kayak
tidal geyser
#

well im not the one buying the gpu, i do not really know every little thing you do

#

9070 xt is better in most games

5070 has better software

viral kayak
#

ill probably buy the 9070xt then its not really that much more expensive

tidal geyser
viral kayak
#

anyways anyone got a idea to why i cant select 280hz when my monitor is 280hz

viral kayak

i hate that laptops only come with hdmi now a days

#

my ultrawide is max 100hz on hdmi and 200hz on DP'

#

the dumb monitor does not have hdmi 2.1

viral kayak
#

i wonder does the 1070 even have a dp port?

tidal geyser
#

and here you see why i prefer doing other things

odd marsh
tidal geyser
#

well the monitor does not

odd marsh
#

you can just buy a USB-C to DisplayPort cable, but I understand that it isn't convenient

tidal geyser
#

i did buy a dock

#

i had other issues with it so never really tested it much but i should maybe test it a bit

#

even if my poor 140v might never hit much above 60 fps

viral kayak
#

god i hate stiff dp and hdmi cables

tidal geyser
#

i do not care much i only touch em like once every 5 years or whatever

viral kayak
#

well i cant use dp

#

just gives me a black screen suspecting bad port on the gpu

tidal geyser
#

did you switch the monitor to use DP?

viral kayak
#

yes

#

just kept going into standby mode

#

also another question is why does xbox think my monitor is 4k when its 2560 x 1440

# tulip sparrow All thge buggy updates are for 25H2 LOL

If you read beyond the headlines, you would know that 99% of such things were edge cases which no one could have thought of and prepared for, and the others probably had some installation failures, which just made the update fail and it restarted normally without updating. It's been some time since 25H2 released, and the subsequent updates have made it much better now

In some specific cases, it asked for bitlocker recovery key IF bitlocker was enabled (and it's saved to your ms account anyways)

cold frost

why does it only let me go to 60hz? i bought it as a 2nd monitor and it should be able to go to 180hz

azure topaz
#

get a better cable

#

whaat gpu are you using?

cold frost
#

360ti

azure topaz
#

yeah find a diff cable

#

did it come with displayport? dont use hdmi

supple basin

Did you plug it into the gpu

cold frost
#

yes and yes

azure topaz
#

use dp iinstead of da hdmi

cold frost
#

Bet

azure topaz
#

🫡

#

(hdmi is not always bad but its kinda hard to find good cables in a pile of cables at home in a box)

#

dp usually will work so

supple basin
#

U can't even get full hdr10 with 180hz with hdmi on that monitor right

azure topaz
#

probably not?

#

i think youd get 144

supple basin
#

Yeah that's a hdmi 2.0

azure topaz
#

idk hdmi specs because dsc generally makes shit like that irrelevant for me

#

i plug in monitor and set high refresh

#

i think mine actually is technically better from the hdmi but i get 360 on dp so

supple basin
#

Dp been strong for years

#

I think hdmi tho on the verge of getting 8k240hz

odd marsh
azure topaz
odd marsh
azure topaz
#

i can set it 10 bit i just thyought there was no reason to yeah

stark flicker
azure topaz
#

true

#

also why i dont use hdr

supple basin
#

I mean it's at least bare minimum hdr

stark flicker
#

Yeah don't, saying that the monitor is hdr is just false advertising, lying and taking advantages of people and words

stark flicker
#

My cat is more hdr than this monitor

azure topaz
#

i think you need 1K nits min for real hdr lol

supple basin
#

Legally and baseline it is but ik what ur saying

stark flicker
#

"real" hdr doesn't mean a lot and hdr isn't just about amount of nits @azure topaz

odd marsh
azure topaz
#

but i dont think theres any hdr 400 monitor that anyone is using hdr on lol

stark flicker
#

It's about having a "high" dynamic range

For that you need a fat*ss gamut but also big contrast

And contrast being the ratio between light and dark, you need high nits and especially deep blacks

Which you will never ever have on this kind of monitor, no deep blacks, not high dynamic range, no hdr

azure topaz
#

i forget deep blacks is not a characteristic of new monitors

#

and a characteristic of oleds lol

#

daily monitor spoiling me

stark flicker
#

Also contrast isn't always unidmensionnal since the blackness capabilities can vary in some monitors, like in minileds

Like you can have 0 nits and 1000 nits with miniled but if near a black pixel you have big nits then the black pixel won't be at 0 and/or the luminous thing won't be at 1000

supple basin
#

VA do HDR very well

odd marsh
#

VA Mini-led sure

#

a generic VA panel no

supple basin
#

Still VA 😄

azure topaz
#

miniled is what i really want to try

#

kinda sad i never bought the GN10

#

probably woulda liked it tbh

supple basin
#

If u already have OLED there's nothing to try it's exactly what you think it'll look like

#

It's worse for sure

azure topaz
#

thats not my curiosity lol

#

i just like trying things

odd marsh
#

I think we are getting decent mini-led monitors now

stark flicker
# supple basin VA do HDR very well

No they don't no, except if miniled and if miniled even ips will do ok

But miniled usually "just" do hdr, they don't do it "very well"

(I currently own a miniled to test it for one of my computers, and I also own oled and tested so many monitors / TV)

azure topaz
#

yeah iirc you guys were why i just bought the oled instead of the miniled i wanted

odd marsh
azure topaz
#

true

#

although double the price

#

or something

stark flicker
odd marsh
#

I too would like to try mini-led, they have huge brightness advantage over OLED

azure topaz
#

gn 10 was almost 300 and the oled was 500 after i did shipping

azure topaz
#

i dont run max brightness or anything but i feel like my retinas need a good searing every once and a while

odd marsh
#

Hisense was doing 4000nit+ 2% windows too

azure topaz
#

wow

stark flicker
odd marsh
#

i'd get mini-led TV over monitor to test with the panel, but mini-led monitor is def easier

supple basin
#

I guess I don't have many comparisons, my only oled is phones and LG C1 and yes that is a good point that c1 can do HDR better with much less brightness than my miniled

stray portal
#

What mini led options even are there

Only mini leds avalible on the market are using va

fierce breach
#

Random interesting idea popped into my head regarding this.

Soldered RAM, prob 8GB to keep overall cost for customer low

BUT it runs single channel on channel A. There's also a SODIMM slot on channel B. Further, that slot only gets enabled (prob literally by gating power delivery) by a jumper you have to manually move. Jumper has 3 possible positions:

A only
B only
A and B

This way, if the soldered RAM dies, the board can easily be mode switched to just use the slotted RAM

#

Literally everyone wins in this scenario right? Or is there some dumb overly complex thing I'm overlooking

grizzled frost
#

not how that works

stray portal
spring latch
fierce breach
#

Am I mistaken?

grizzled frost
fierce breach
#

You can do soldered RAM on one channel

#

I've seen it on really cheap boards

grizzled frost
#

you'd need to toggle every power pin for each bit of ram and controller

fierce breach
grizzled frost
#

I don't really see an appetite for it, ram almost never dies

fierce breach
#

But if it does, it's catastrophic if it's soldered. The point of soldering RAM (outside of anti-repair/anti-upgrade 4D chess) is cost cutting. Lower cost means higher profit, OR lower price for end user. Lower price means happier customer and higher adoption rate so higher profit anyways.

But, I come from the repair world, so I have my biases against soldered RAM, which is why I'd design a switching system for it

#

The board would already be using an embedded CPU, so why not just make it an AIO with memory too?

soldered ram almost never dies before anything else

Do they monitor individual users using enterprise licenses?

They monitor enterprises, yes but not individual users.

It starts to slow down the moment you do anything with it. There is no universe in which you think 8gb is usable. I have to work on these things on a daily basis

shrewd timber
#

8gb is the new 4gb

restive plinth

My clients don't. They're old and go on chrome

spring latch
#

minor slow down here and there but thats mostly CPU based

#

and if its not a user cause, other factors such as CPU and storage type are there

#

I do agree, windows isnt optimized for 8GB, but that doesn't mean its bare unusable

solar geode
#

Thats a fair point. I just don't see why someone should be fine with having so little to use

#

I know price point is a concern, but even with current memory prices, there are still so many laptops with 16gb, 512gb, core ultra 5 configs for sub $800

spring latch
#

I know people that would

#

I just dont overshoot what I get because I know what im trying to do

#

I'm mostly using the PC I am cuz it used to be my dads

solar geode
#

But these 8gb celeron configs shouldn't be in production. It's a waste of silicon. The moment you put something on it that isn't built into the OS it becomes unusable. Some Linux distros will help, but you can't expect average consumers to immediately flash linux onto a $150 laptop

spring latch
solar geode
#

Bottom of the barrel shit

#

and its the one that comes in the most

spring latch
#

the best experience I ever had with a celeron is a J4125

spring latch
#

I had a Silver N6000, it had 4GB but when you stayed in the RAM limits, the iGPU could do some serious work for its TDP

#

I am happy intel discontinued celeron in 2023

#

but they didnt have to take pentium with it

solar geode
#

Kinda happy it did

#

Low tier chipsets were taking up manufacturing space that could be used for mid-range, making that cheaper as well

spring latch
#

i mean sure, some ambiguity is gone, the N6000 would beat some low end i3's while the N5005 wouldnt and that didnt seem right, but the new Core Ultra naming convention sucks

solar geode
#

Don't get me started with that. Entirely different can of worms

spring latch
#

I already have old hardware anyways so I dont see a need to complain regardless

old but gold I suppose

I don't know, kaby lake is quite mixed

They could drop the numbers and use elements

spring latch
#

I figured out a solid bypass for Windows 7 on NVMe is to install a base windows like 10, make a VHD (not VHDX) and install windows 7 to that, then add the vhd to the bootloader

#

as long as your GPU has a legacy oprom, windows 7 will boot on UEFI

#

I'm forced to have CSM on in my BIOS, my GPU literally doesn't support UEFI GOP well enough

#

probably half the reason the rebar hack ruined preformance

solar geode
#

Yeesh

#

What keeps you on 7 then?

spring latch
#

the fact that its the only OS that ive used in the modern day I dont have significant issues with, besides the linux disto I use ofc

#

there are nuances to using it like some software still doesnt run even with vxkex but thats why its a tri-boot and not dual boot

#

also the overhead on some APIs is less

If it still idles at 10 or 11, then you have nothing to worry about. It's automatically managed. If it is causing issues when you try to open any software that's when you need to look into this.

Only realy fix is to keep those apps fully closed when not in use. If they don't use teams that can be uninstalled completely
