Turning an old raspberry pi, a slim keyboard, a portable monitor and a large battery bank that can give me I think a few hours of battery into a laptop with my 3D printer.

100% of the modeling is gonna be rectangular and flat corners and 90 degree angles besides maybe where the two halves connect because my monitor is the exact width of my build plate.

Is this an easy cad project and if it is what cad software do I use what's a good start point and how much time would it take to model?

empty quartz
#

Easy? Depends on your skill level

#

Make sure the slim keyboard has a built in trackpad so you have a “mouse”

Its what i use, blender is a pain in the ass

30 hours still wasnt enough to learn blender tbh

Partially boredom anyways

#

It was for a project

flat cliff

#

Took me 4 hours to learn the basics of the physics engine

flat cliff
#

If I do use tinker cad assume I've never uses cad before in my life and I'm what's cad (I'm not that bad but let's do worst case) how much it gonna take to measure out and get printed test parts?

flat cliff
empty quartz
flat cliff
#

Idk I know tinker cad can work for this and part of me wants to cut corners but part of me wants to pick a learn for life end game software and just start with that you know?

empty quartz
#

Tinkercad is actually really good for a free web based app

flat cliff
flat cliff
#

That's just my laptop.

#

But idk before I decide if I'm cutting corners how much it gonna take to cad out test parts on tinker cad?

empty quartz
flat cliff
#

If it gonna be quick quick maybe I wait on starring blender?

flat cliff
#

I got the ram RIGHT before the price hikes

#

But again assuming I just use tinker cad how much time is this project gonna take? Is it a get to printing test prints in a weekend?

It's a modeling software for stuff that are made to stay in the digital world, like animations, game assets or whatever

flat cliff
stark flicker
#

Nope

#

I knew a bit of blender, I've tried making some stuff to 3D print, but real useful stuff

It's basically unusable for that

flat cliff
#

Computer aided design sounds like on a technically...level bender counts and I've used it to do real STL file edits before.

stark flicker
#

It's OK if you want to print a w40k figurine or whatever, but not for anything a bit close to some engineering

stark flicker
grizzled frost
stark flicker
#

If you want to do cad stuff blender isn't the software to use

Fusion360, onshape, freecad are

flat cliff
stark flicker
#

For w40k you don't do any cad

#

It's modeling/sculpting

#

And yeah blender is nice for that, but that's not cad

#

To make it simple :
Something artistic : blender
Something engineered : cad

flat cliff
#

I would think there is a software that can somewhat do both?

stark flicker
# flat cliff All I'm gonna say is I've heard it called cad. Not that its gonna be war hammer ...

Yeah well modeling isn't cad it is how it is

And no modeling software are not cad software using one for the other and vice versa is super annoying

Blender is already uber insane because even in the world of modeling before we had many different software for each type of task, like texturing, modeling, animations etc etc
But blender "blends" them all

But blender doesn't do cad well, even if you are proficient with it it's just better to use any cad software

stark flicker
flat cliff
# stark flicker I don't know the project but few hours not that much

I just need a flat panel with bezels to slide the monitor in from the top, a thin strip to snap in or screw in to hold the monitor in place. Another flat panel to cover the raspberry pi and battery with one hole for passing in cables (shoot they probably don't make 3in cables or something stupidly short maybe I stuff a 1 foot somewhere so solder my own? I need a really really short display cable?) And some way to attach the keyboard to this and fold closed.

I'm thinking only 6-8 parts less I want sides to better cover where the raspberry pi goes.

I know how it would all work besides attaching the keyboard so what do I do for that? If I just wanted to make this a monitor computer and keyboard separately (I don't wanna) it be 6 parts including the sides for the back and it would only be 90 degree angles and cuts 100%.

Just realized I do gotta do the keyboard attach and I don't yet have good idea for that.

#

Its only this many parts because my build plate is 3 inches off of making the frame one part.

Would this be a trustworthy buy?

#

Claims to be OEM but they always could just be lying

#

has good reviews though

and this matches my PSU

flat cliff
# modest flame Would this be a trustworthy buy?

The second you buy a cable not from the OEM you risk plugging it in and frying the components. If its not OEM and they lie and the pin out is different? Extension cables just have all pins live and make the real cable send the power on the right lines to avoid this.

Its the number one way to fry components. What do you need a new cable for? Can you not just ask thermaltake support? Also what PSU thermaltake PSUs are usually not great quality.

Okay, thanks guys

formal sonnet
# mossy sparrow Okay, thanks guys

The main problem with "debloat" scripts (aside from the glaring security risks associated with running someone else's script on your computer) is that many people don't keep track of what these scripts are changing. This leads to questions like "help, my PC won't launch the Xbox Games App so I can't run any of my Game Pass games!" when things eventually break, after which we start asking questions, you reveal that you debloated Windows but don't remember the settings used, leaving our only suggestion to be "reinstall Windows." pepoJuice

I'm not saying don't remove OS features / apps you don't use... but if you do so without understanding what you're doing, don't be surprised when your Windows breaks in 1-18 business months.

Many programs leave traces of themselves behind because their software developers are too incompetent to provide end users with the option to fully cleanse their PC of the program. (Yes, I will die on this hill; I expect an uninstaller to let me choose to remove EVERYTHING associated with the program, including any identifiers used to indicate I had a free trial of the program.)
Anywho... REVO Uninstaller attempts to find these leftover items and lets you remove them. The problem with this is when REVO thinks files or registry keys belong to the program you're trying to uninstall when they don't belong to that program at all. It's entirely up to you to decide if it's safe to remove these items.

# pulsar root It’s crazy that a 5060 has better perf than a 2080ti

Not really. It's been the same with Processors for as long as Intel has been using a similar incremental naming scheme. Tis why some modern day i3 processors outperform some olden day i7 processors. Tis why I upgraded from an i7-4790k to an i5-12600k instead of a modern i7 processor.

tulip sparrow
#

For 10 years or so core is all performaned roughly the same for my needs LOL

pulsar root
#

That’s interesting

tulip sparrow

It wasn't until Coffee Lake/ Zen 1 that I FINALLY felt the need to upgrade from my Ivy Bridge based i5 3570k and that was ONLY because of the increase in core counts on mainstream FINALLY

I still have the old i5 3570k currently acting as a HTPC and its paired with a 2060 Super that came out of my Ryzen system. Replaced the 970 that was in the i5 system thanks to the low vram amount causing newer games to just straight up crash at times

I'm stuck running DDR5 5600 on my system

the FPS numbers were fine with the 970 still it was just crashing thanks to running out of vram in games so yeah

I want to transcode my entire library to h265 but I can only do that CPU right now and its not worth the electricity. Waiting to build a new server and throw my old GTX 1080 in it.

I got this one, an old Dell Precision T7600 workstation with dual Xeons and 32GB ECC RAM with a 1300W power supply for $400 nearly a decade ago off ebay. It was legit one of the best purchases I ever made. Still running strong today. But I just ran into my first issue after a drive was starting to show some worrying SMART errors so I pulled it pre-emptively.

I think my H310 HBA is not liking modern drives at all. Signal issues it seems. And I'm not sure I can replace the card with a newer one because of Dells propriety power cable is like a giant hydra of cables all in one really limiting my options. And drives are too expensive right now to chance it haha. So I'm capped out at 20TB currently and I want more

ionic ember
#

oh man yeah there's a few things going on there

charred ledge
#

Yeah I tried 3 different drives and none were recognized in the BIOS even. Luckily I was able to return them, but I don't want to gamble with that again. And drive prices keep skyrocketting unfortunately. And no way Im paying the same prices for a 10 year old drive hoping it works

ionic ember
#

so I think you can get adapter cables that can convert standard ATX connectors to ones that will work with Dells, which fixes that problem

I would sell the 1080 and put that money towards an a310 so you can get AV1 and HEVC

my HBA's kept overheating and would start acting in a similar manner, strap a 40mm fan to it and you should be good because I thought my drives were also failing but nope, the HBA was on the fritz

I'm open to any suggestions. I've been trying to use AI to help diagnose the best course of action, but it hasn't been too helpful so far. As far as I know I don't know if an adapter works for my rig. It has a dedicated power distribution board with proprietary connectors. And even if I got one, this amalgamation of a cable pretty supplies everything including drive data so I'm not sure if I can replace that with anything. If there is a solution that would fix like 100% of my problems haha. I would immediately buy a new HBA and some drives.

because it's still a Dell lol

and looking at the motherboard for that system, there doesn't seem to be any weird plugs out of the ordinary on the board, despite it being a very Dell form factor

the backplane on the other hand is a bit of a different story but it's not insurmountable

Hmm I'll have to look into that. As far as I know there is only those two connectors for power so I probably would have to run a flex PSU for powering the drives and just connect them to the hba with sata cables over the the aio sata connectors the cable I'm using now has. But I don't know where I would fit it or how well that would work. I probably should just build something more modern to get away from the proprietary issues, but I'm looking at at least $1500 and thats without any additional drives than I have now and using consumer RAM.

Yeah the backplane could also be a bit of an issue. That monstrosity of a cable is my biggest hurdle right now.

So would I leave the existing cable there, but use a flex psu for powering just the drives so I can run a data cable to a newer HBA?

nah you're going to need two separate flex PSUs to get 2x 24pin for the motherboard

Ive never used a flex psu before, so not sure how that all works
