so basically you can split drives into 2 parts (partitions) and the windows install that you had before probably had 2 partitions meaning the drive was split into 2 parts

and when you reinstalled your windows you probably formatted it and just selected the drive and that only gave you 1 partition

There are currently two factors, really, at play here:
(1) GPU's become better quality, more transistors, and can be smaller and generate same performance (perhaps even better performance)
(2) GPU's become bigger so they get much more powerful than the predecessor gpu with the same size
