true, copilot if you look at it has good planning but bad execution, really feels like someone is forcing you.

I don't think I've ever even tried using copilot

What I also meant by "Learn from Google":
Google recently added the "Ask Gemini" button to Chrome. But just right click it, and the option to unpin it is right there.
For Edge, turning it off will take you to the settings. From the settings, you need to have 2 more clicks to turn it off. That sucks. It should be one click turn off.

jaunty apex
#

At least in Firefox its a global setting. And one slider

#

well, for the first time in 10 years I have switched teams from green to red. I purchased a 9700xt today and I will be glad to finally leave this mess that nvidia has created recently.

restive plinth
#

It also has more features like auto save, tabs, etc. So having a settings makes sense ig

placid citrus

Norway??? Ayo??

jaunty apex

But its literally a fucking Microsoft product, I don't have to set dark mode for every app

restive plinth
tranquil wharf
#

maybe hot take but personally I don't really see that big of an issue with some AI button/tab in things as long as I can just easily and intuitively disable it, never to be seen again

placid citrus
#

If I hadn't JUST bought a laptop a month or two ago... gruh

restive plinth
#

You have all these settings. You cannot put them in Windows settings

jaunty apex
#

Hell dark mode applies in all apps under LINUX and Microsoft can't do this for their settings and logins?

restive plinth
jaunty apex
#

AI?

#

I mean the independence is a given there if there isn't a global windows setting for it

tranquil wharf
restive plinth
# jaunty apex AI?

You can uninstall the copilot app and it will never disturb you. For AI buttons within apps, you can turn it off within the settings, or just never use them. It doesn't activate unless you specifically ask it to turn on.

jaunty apex
#

I mean for Microsoft products specifically. And the copilot features.

restive plinth
tranquil wharf
#

dark mode is a global setting because it's basically part of your system theme, it's not really application setting (unless you want to override per application)

placid citrus
#

OOF, if I wanted to match my current laptop specs (I'll give it to them, the processor would be better) the price for a framework 16 inch would be over DOUBLE what my similarly specced laptop cost... OOF Definitely understand there's some premium and I got a good deal on my laptop but stiiiiill.... that was steeper than I anticipated

restive plinth

The copilot app is for the Copilot chatbot.

yea both would be fine, especially if they use the same context so you can go to text input and that part knows what it just did before from a button press

dusky spindle
#

maybe what they should do is that when a user first launches copilot, then get a box which they can say how they want their ai to be, makes it more personalized

Jonsbo N5 case, says it's Micro-ATX but supports ATX PSU. So safe to assume that means my silly ass needs to buy a micro ATX motherboard if I want to use it? :/ Maybe a Fractal 7XL is better for me then after all? Building sort of hybrid NAS/Server thingy

dusky spindle
tranquil wharf
#

at least in terms of motherboard

placid citrus
tranquil wharf
#

you could check if it gives exact supported motherboard dimensions there

#

and compare those to ATX standard size

placid citrus

Like when I google I find even eATX supported so I'm getting conflicting info

tranquil wharf
dusky spindle
placid citrus
#

Ok so on a review I'm finding EATX, ATX, Mini-ATX, Micro-ATX

someone had a nas upgrade with the n5; idk if it was plouffe recently or the latest AMD ultimate tech upgrade winner, but you should be able to get some solid reliable info from that video

@sinful cobalt new tables are done until I get cable management racks and stuff

Having a cheap-ish tablet to have as a "control panel" for a home server/plex/NAS, useful?

dusky spindle
#

ive been having some issues with windows, when starting it doesnt let me click any apps until i do ctrl + shift + esc to then restart explorer, is it just windows or is there smth really wrong

dusky spindle
placid citrus
#

I just thought maybe it's useful to have something like that that can just be nearby the physical server for sort of "quick access/checkup"

rigid fjord
#

afaik, they should be, also the tablet would be more for remote access which if you're using the likes of truenas/proxmox or similar, has a web access gui @placid citrus

placid citrus
placid citrus
dusky spindle
rigid fjord
placid citrus
tranquil wharf
rigid fjord
placid citrus
#

the only case I'd consider actually having GUI and stuff setup is if I want to also use it as a living room gaming couch gaming thing

tranquil wharf
#

but there's no need for it to be connected

placid citrus
#

Which might be part of the plan but that's for future me to figure out

dusky spindle
#

wait i think then i can convert my old chromebook to a server

placid citrus
#

plex has web gui, truenas too as rauko said, literally just a "control panel" dedicated device or something idk

#

just a thought that popped up

tranquil wharf
dusky spindle
rigid fjord
# dusky spindle oh

for a nas or server you can either ssh in to access it, or use a web access/page gui

tranquil wharf
#

web ui for IPMI kind of stuff is pretty cool, wish more boards had that

#

updating BIOS by drag&drop of the bios image into a web ui is pretty convenient

placid citrus
# rigid fjord proxmox and hexos also tbh

If I wanted to use the system as both a living room couch gaming thing but also NAS/Plex server, do you have any recommendations or maybe a "don't do that"? I have a 4070 that's gonna just sorta be left over if I don't put it in there. Planning to put either 5600X or 5800X in as CPU

dusky spindle
#

charge your tv is probably a phrase i have never heard

tranquil wharf
placid citrus
#

also looking at 8TB IronWolf Pro NT as they seem the best price per GB without going as high as 24/28TB which would be way too expensive for enough drives for data parity and such

dusky spindle
#

nope i have not

placid citrus
rigid fjord
dusky spindle
tranquil wharf
#

but yea for NAS you want to focus on stability. I can't think of a solution that would work well for both NAS and gaming purposes at the same time

rigid fjord
#

you can make use of remote gaming when it comes to steam for example, there's also remote pc access via proxmox and other bits

abstract wigeon
#

new pixel 9, set battery limit to 80, worked for a day, now its charged up to full

#

I've encountered battery powered monitors before, but I don't think I've seen battery-powered TVs 🤔 I'm sure it is a niche that exists but definitely not something you'd necessarily encounter by keeping up with tech

oblique jay
#

But as far as I can remember, before swapped to the 14700F from the 13600K I didnt have these problems.

rigid fjord
oblique jay
#

I mean I got the 14700f off my mate for 150 and sold the 13600k for like 165

rigid fjord
placid citrus
grizzled frost
#

14700 is a bit better than the 13600

oblique jay
#

I mean I researched and I was under the influence that it is better.

placid citrus
oblique jay
#

I didnt just upgrade because it's an "i7"

rigid fjord
#

if you've paid for plex, then yes, it's way better for the transcode, but tbh you could just use 10/20 series nvidia for that instead, hell even 30 series nvida if you want something newer

rigid fjord
placid citrus
oblique jay
#

14700f not 14700

native path
#

@sinful cobalt now my 3rd monitor isnt connecting gg time to get the oled

rigid fjord
oblique jay
#

Yeah sounds good 🫡

placid citrus
#

Still need to decide whether I use the 5600X or 5800X for the server, then... I guess I could list both for sale and keep whichever isn't sold first

native path
#

5600x me thinks

#

it feels more power efficient (dont quote me on this im talking out of my ass)

rigid fjord
placid citrus
#

Ty, will do

rigid fjord
#

people see the tdp and assume that's what power it uses, it's not

placid citrus
#

So, 1080ti, 5800X, 32GB 3200MT/s, forgor MOBO, Jonsbo N5, 4-8x 8TB IronWolf PRO NT, sounds pretty good. 650wPSu enough surely?

rigid fjord
#

i would suggest using jellyfin instead of plex personally, especially with the extras you can run for it

placid citrus
#

nvm I have a 650W

tranquil wharf
#

people are also comparing X vs Y at max load. when for efficiency for a given task, you'd have to compare them at the same load

rigid fjord
placid citrus
rigid fjord
#

radarr/sonarr/seerr are some of the extras you can run alongside jellyfin

south arrow
placid citrus
#

I think looking more into software has to be a later project when I have the system built tbh, too much to plan ahead right now

azure topaz
#

annoying to setup though, also should use a VPN

placid citrus
#

I do appreciate the enthusiasm

rigid fjord
#

gives you a good chunk more functionality over plex, even intergrating the ability to download films/tv series on the go

placid citrus
native path
#

could just send a docker compose

azure topaz
#

if you’re downloading erm, linux iso’s you basically need a vpn

#

some isps don’t care but still risky business

tranquil wharf
#

I looked into the arr stack at some point but I'm way too opinionated on how I want to organize and choose things to ever use it

placid citrus

well, america for sure vpn it all, elsewhere in the world, it's a coin flip

im not giving up on my armor OC 580. The Armor OC and GAMING X 580 have the exact same PCB so if I swap the gaming X's thermal components such as the cooling plate and tha acellero III onto it in theory the VRMs shouldnt overheat much

oblique jay
#

@rigid fjord Is it possible to pinpoint what may be the problem on my system? Super stressful that I havent been able to figure it out.. If it's the cpu then Im more than happy to go replace it but Im just confused as fuck

Seems annoying. I dont wanna lose the shit Ive got on here

Its new-ish (to me), I bought it off my mate a few months back. Thoguh when he had it he had problems too, like it was running super hot

rigid fjord
oblique jay
# valid garden also was it a sudden drop or was it gradual

before it was crashes / freezes (like the audio was buzz and screen freeze), I havent had it since I updated bios but now getting frame drops in roblox out of all things (20-30fps from 200++), and then when I was trying to run an FL project, that was just running like complete ass

But his chip was getting quite hot even with that, playing cod on low-mid graphics

#

I havent noticed hot temps when checking so not sure

what cooling does it have is it like a big air? aio? small air?

oblique jay
#

thermalright peerless assassin

#

Was fine on my 13600k

#

So cant imagine it should be an issue for this chip

south arrow
#

I forget what F stands for. But if in bios you can disable multicore enhancement you'll save 10c ish and maybe lose 5% max performance

oblique jay
#

Tempted to just buy a 13600k back or some shit and get rid of this garbage

valid garden
#

WOW this acellero cooler with the gaming x face plate is working wonders

#

1366MHz core 1750MHz vRAM, 44 degrees, before with the stock cooler the vBIOS would crash for saftey

south arrow
#

12000-14000 series intel are pretty wicked

#

But yeah they come oob pretty toasty

#

A few tech heads have been preaching it should be disabled by default, but tbf it is technically within its 95c tdp. So I get why mobo manufacturers dont

oblique jay
#

Any recs what I can really do in this situation? Pretty sure Ive done all the updates I can on gpu / bios

#

Cant imagine its a gpu issue anyway

rigid fjord
#

tbh, 14th gen just ain't worth it

south arrow
#

Once set to disabled in bios save and quit

#

Or drop watts by 40 easy cooling not alot of loss

oblique jay
#

It's recent issues though which is why Im confused. I had the chip for months with no problems

#

Its just a recent issue like last 6 weeks ish

south arrow
#

On pl1 and pl2*

#

So those 2 options or well can also limit to a set thermal point like 85 or 75 in bios and itll throttle itself

#

So 3 options bless any 1 option should do

oblique jay
#

I dont think thermals are the problem

south arrow
#

If a new cooler check for the plastic on the copper. Ill backread

#

But the post office is gonna charge a leg so if its faulty or inaccurate your burnt

rigid fjord
#

first part of this is for registry editior, second part is the same but as a power shell command line

#

@formal sonnet iknow you said about setting your page file up to be 1gb minimum with up to half you total ram amount as the max
this is a powershell line command to do the same, just would need to change the max size

powershell "Disable-MMAgent -MemoryCompression"
wmic computersystem where name="%computername%" set AutomaticManagedPagefile=False
wmic pagefileset where name="C:\\pagefile.sys" set InitialSize=1024,MaximumSize=32768
powershell "Get-NetAdapter -IncludeHidden | Set-NetIPInterface -WeakHostSend Enabled -WeakHostReceive Enabled -ErrorAction SilentlyContinue"
netsh winsock set autotuning on
bcdedit /set disableelamdrivers Yes
south arrow
#

If you have the extra ram space not being utuilised cant hurt. Increments of 2mb per hugepage, keeping a few gigs free for the os (1GB is 1000MB)

tranquil wharf

raid 3 isn't really a thing that is done anymore

lapis talon
rigid fjord

like raid 10 requires 4 drives minimum because your's doing raid 0 first then raid 1 after

lapis talon

But isn't RAID what a NAS uses though?

snow mauve
#

sup brosef

rigid fjord
lapis talon
#

Sounds like a whole new rabbit hole

tranquil wharf
# lapis talon Does setting up raid3 and raid5 have different requirements?

the differences in general between different raid types are:

  1. how likely it is that you have data loss if a specific number of drives fail
  2. read and write speeds
  3. speed of restoring after a drive has failed
  4. minimum number of drives to even use it
  5. available storage for use
and choosing one is based on which tradeoff you go with between these
rigid fjord

JBOD is the more jank form for doing a nas

Had a sort of off topic question.

A relative went to a different country a few days ago with their family. A stranger at the airport had met up with them as they had booked stuff from the same travel agency.

My relative was traveling with his parents and they ended up sorting of "bonding" with that stranger (?) and this resulted in something crazy happening. The stranger asked my relatives to check his baggages in along with my relatives' by saying that the stranger himself was a relative and this would make the process faster. That stranger checked in 4 ENTIRE SUITCASES which totalled to around 75kg full of illegal stuff. Relative's parents are a bit on the older side so they didn't suspect anything when that stranger initially asked them for the favour (they didn't know what was in the suitcase either). Relatives landed at their destination and then were stopped by police. Those suitcases they checked in had NO labels, and so my relative was fined around $5000 USD.

What do y'all think?

zfs is a filesystem. raidz is effectively raid handled entirely in software by the zfs filesystem drivers, meaning you don't need any special hardware and you can just move the drives to any other system and run zfs on there and it can read them just fine. this is contrast to hardware raid, which means it's managed by special hardware (raid controller) and you might need the exact same hardware to be able to access the data later, possibly leading to data loss if you can't procure another one of the same controller

Just to understand, which CPUs have lower rates of defect at stock not related to wear?

tall sandal
#

It’s probably rare, but it’s something that like we need to look for actively to reveal before declaring a pc stable, I know Jays2cents does lots of stress tests

grizzled frost
tall sandal
#

I don’t think it was a defect, it happened over time

grizzled frost
#

DOA CPUs are extremely rare outside of physical damage

tall sandal
#

Nah not DOA, I mean a fundamental issue with the CPU, an unstable cpu that works. I’ve always wondered this

#

I wanna expand my pc knowledge

#

That for example it’s the sole reason of an unstable system which usually is caused by other factors.

grizzled frost
#

Every CPU has some sort of defect somewhere in the silicon

#

That's why binning exists

tall sandal
#

when I say defect I mean a fundamental issue, like a cpu that’s haunted. A pc that behaves abnormally. For example things I’ve seen and heard are like freezing up, blue screen, black screens

#

Things like this. I have had black screens in quite a few laptops previously I’ve owned for example, but they were occasional. Like I remember the device froze up and black screen needed a hard reset

snow cedar
# tall sandal Things like this. I have had black screens in quite a few laptops previously I’v...

this is usually software tied, or bios tied
hardware errors are pretty rare
gpus dying is much more common than a cpu dying
I've rarely seen any chip die unless pushed too hard

eg pushing an old i5 chip to run cyberpunk would probably stress it too much and can cause damage due to heating cycles

in the same way, pushing an i7

  • more threads to distribute workload
  • low overloaded.bottlenecks
  • lower temps (avg)

but on newer chips, none of this really matters anymore.
all of them are very powerful

tall sandal
#

Yea I mean I thought this too, usually rare for hardware to cause such issues, for the CPU

tall sandal
#

Like what would happen if you overuse and abuse an older i5 running cyberpunk for example frequently even with very good cooling, and there was say excellent thermals.

woeful leaf

since 2011 all are machine made

tall sandal
cold skiff
#

Which is why you don’t need to worry

snow cedar
tall sandal
#

That a haunted feeling Pc for example people have had, it’s only due to CPU

cold skiff
#

I think 2011 is a little late also

tall sandal
#

and nothing else, but it’s not a dead chip just there is fundamental defect, things like this.

snow cedar
tall sandal
#

Cuz pc builders always love doing stress tests

#

For hours on end, maybe 24 hours. They do it very aggressively

#

They are trying to reveal any issues. So that’s why I ask

snow cedar
cold skiff
#

IIRC it was like 2002-2004 the switch was made. AMD might have even went a little later as global foundries wasn’t used until 2009
