Yeah, gotta try out Nextcloud, never worked with it.
But I want to replace Google Documents and Sheets. Don't need super fancy tools, just a simple text and table editor that allows for live over the internet editing with multiple people. Ideally on a website, so people don't need to install stuff.
And I think Nextcloud + OnlyOffice is the best approach for that, at least from what I found.

I don't use it too much either, mainly it's for backup. But having an easier search is nice.

Tailscale I thought about because neither my nor the backup location has a fixed IP.

Just saw your post here. This is a pretty great setup, and is almost exactly what I use as well. The Immich and NextCloud communities are both very active and very large, so if you run into anything that gives you issues, it's very very easy to get it fixed pretty quick.

But the current setup is at 2.2k € and that's for only 40TB of storage. Without RAID (I think raid is pointless in my sitaution, I will have three copies of the data and it's not really that time critical to access that data, so I'd rather save myself the HDD cost)
So 2.2k hurts... that's gonna take almost 10 years to offset googles cost, factoring in power etc. (Although on Google I currently only have 4TB, I had almost 100TB on there when it was unlimited :D)

Well, you're going REALLY big on storage. Self hosting rarely offsets the cost of tech giant subscriptions. It's usually for a few reasons.

• Tech giants are going to increase your subscription costs, so while it might be cheaper now, it might not be in the future
• They are able to sell you that subscription at such a low price because they sell your data
• You have way more control over your stuff and access to more advanced features
• You gain responsibility for it. If you lose photos, it's on you (Google Photos lost a lot of people's photos a few years ago)

Yup. The best part is, somebody is using those AI features. And they're benefitting from them because of training data harvested from you. So not only are you paying for something you don't use, somebody else is getting extra benefit from screwing you over on data harvesting.

I will not do RAID, since I will have two backups and the data is not time critical.
My original plan was to just get 4x 12TB, basically how you would do it with a RAID too.
But I just realised, I'm not doing a RAID, so why stick to RAID disk setups.
I have about 20TB of random old stuff that I just want to have accessible, but that isn't that important. So I thought instead of wasting 2 drive slots just for that, why not go with a 24TB disk (which is a fair bit cheaper per TB) and just throw it all on there.

I know big drives are bad becuase of rebuild time. But I don't have rebuild time since I have backup drives. So are there other drawbacks of big drives? Are they more likely to fail? Or write slower or something?
