my current home project is to backup my old windows 10 pro PC to a 4TB hard drive with clonezilla, and then turn my old PC into an NAS that can boot either as the NAS or windows 10. any recommendations on what NAS OS to use? i'm thinking something that is based on Debian Linux, as the goal is to simply learn, document, and expand my list of personal projects so that i can hopefully find a job in IT.

TrueNAS Scale is what lots of people seem to enjoy using. That, or HexOS, which is just a simplified skin on top of TrueNAS as far as I know. As for dual booting... that's up to you. I personally do not recommend dual booting Windows and Linux these days unless you know how bootloaders work. Far too often I see people's dual boot setups break because Grub or Windows decides to overwrite each other's boot configuration. I'm not saying it isn't possible... it's just not worth the time IMO. Better to have a dedicated machine acting as the NAS.

an update on my apartment water/steam damage issue! I've reached out to a public adjuster to try to stop having to deal with this headache and accepted the $1,500 off the top of my payout, and gave them everything I have so far.

they went through it all and said they can't do anything to help the case any as i've been thorough enough the insurance should have just paid out $15,000 and been done already, and he recommended 3 lawyers for a bad faith/breach of contract suit against my insurance.

pluses: adjuster basically said I did his job for him and he couldn't be of any use to me 😄
negative: this headache continues.

Yee. Tis just a different design philosophy. It's nice to have the menu bar in the same location for all apps, but on the flipside, it makes it more difficult to multitask in certain situations because the menu bar only offers actions for the application you have focused in the foreground. Not a criticism of MacOS / Unix-like systems - they just work differently than Windows.
