Alright I got a question for y'all. Do any of you just randomly use Micro-ATX boards when you're NOT trying to save money or NOT using a smaller case? I don't see a point in them unless you're trying to build a smaller build or possibly save money. Micro-ATX boards tend to be cheaper than ATX but less expensive than Mini-ATX. As of yet I have not used one. However when I was upgrading my friends build he had one (but he didn't choose his parts) and I assume the friend that had him choose that back then was just to save money. What do you guys do? The only way I would go with Micro-ATX is if I really needed to save money or if I'm finally building a small form factor build, but in that case I might go with a Mini-ATX.

#

So far I have only gone with full size ATX boards

You can't sign into my account with any of the emails I give out.

i mean thats pretty much the only reasons to use matx , unless u specifically find small mobo in big case aesthetically pleasing (weirdge)
also for sff there are sff cases that are as small as possible bare min size to fit matx mobo and full size psu so u can get an sff build thats only 1 or 2 inches bigger than common sff cases that need itx mobo and sfx psu which r much more expensive, but this is just the "save money" point again lol.

Yeah damn, I just watched that. That's really fucking cool. It reminds me of something Linus was talking about on WAN show or something awhile back where there was an AMD CPU that was a dual core that has a third core on it that you could enable. Wasn't a guarantee that it worked, but if you could get it to work you could get a big performance boost. Sometimes I'm sad that I missed the days of PC building back in the 2000's or even most of the 2010's. There was a lot of cool shit back then, and as great as PC hardware is now there's also been so much stupid bullshit since COVID with chip shortages, crypto, ram shortage, price gouging, etc. etc. etc. etc.

tidal geyser

here in europe EVERYTHING in the house has surge protection as we put it in the electrical closet

buoyant bridge
#

I've got surge protection on my breaker panel

Though it's OPTIONAL in the US

tidal geyser

f

buoyant bridge
#

I already have 3 layers of surge protection before you hit the outlets and 2 layers of gfci

tidal geyser
#

jesus

buoyant bridge
#

if you're on commercial power in the US you can add a LOT of protection

#

you have a line in surge protection device, CT cabinet/meter device, and panel device if you want to have all 3

#

and you can have GFCI outlets on top of breakers (you only need one GFCI outlet at the start of the circuit)

versed ferry
#

We should just power our houses through potato clocks

buoyant bridge
#

One of the dumbass who used to work for me got told to take the 12V aux battery out of the bed in one of the bucket trucks and put it in so he could drive it back to the warehouse

#

Grabbed the 48V deep cycle instead and hooked it up, this is a diesel so there's also a 12V and the 12V supposedly got sent flying

buoyant bridge
#

hilariously a L5P Duramax will actually tolerate being hooked up with a single 48V battery, for how long I don't know

#

None of the interior lighting liked it though nor did various fuses

versed ferry
#

Guaranteed

buoyant bridge
#

I've seen accidents like that on a smaller scale break the terminal posts off

versed ferry
#

We worship electricity. We do not touch it.

buoyant bridge
#

nah I fw electricity

#

If it's enough to scare me off there is a very good chance you're not gonna wanna be anywhere near that without having a 20ft pole around your chest and someone ready to pull you by it

#

Electricity isn't scary if you just. Learn why it does what and do basic research about what you're messing with

#

though I won't fw anything above 480Y cus after 480Y insulation becomes a suggestion

#

next step up from 480Y is 7000V single phase line voltage

#

And realistically I have zero reason to ever touch anything above 480Y

versed ferry
buoyant bridge
#

I've seen a 3500A fuse in person before

#

bank of 3 277V 3500A fuses in a multi building CT cabinet

versed ferry
#

Way more people than it seems have died from trying to take apart a microwave

#

all hail electricity

buoyant bridge
#

I have a CT cabinet on my property that takes 277V 3000A fuses actually

#

And iirc one of my inlet boxes takes 120V 8000A fuses

buoyant bridge
#

I'm sure more people died to CRTs in the 1980s and 1990s than did to a CT cabinet

proper gull
buoyant bridge
#

I think they're AES now

#

I have 2 (soon 3) commerical warehouses on my property and several storage buildings that's why I have all this commercial power shit, this isn't an ohh I like electricity setup in a home

versed ferry
#

Not a hobby I'm keen on

proper gull
#

I just want three phase with enough amps to not be a problem ever

buoyant bridge
proper gull
#

Not fucking 32amps

buoyant bridge
#

If you have the money to afford spending on 3 phase you need 3 phase

#

If you need 3 phase you need more than a 3 phase panel will provide

#

that's why commercial buildings usually have at minimum 2 panels

#

120/240 (and sometimes 360) and then a 480Y panel

#

the split phase panel goes upto like 400A I think and sometimes it can also be 3 phase but still limited to 400A then your 480Y can go up to like 600A I think

#

need MORE amps somehow? Be prepared to start splitting things across multiple panels, the whole point of a CT cabinet is to connect more than one panel to one meter assembly (and do it safely)

#

If you think 3 phase 120V at 400A is a lot it's not fyi, the circuits for the exterior lighting and like 20 exterior plugs as well as the 6 circuits for diesel block heaters (nothing else runs on these) fills that panel almost entirely as code allows

proper gull
#

Standard residential connection here is 63amp single or 32amp three phase and while 32 wouldn't be a problem if it was just serving a garage with like a lift, welder and like a basic mill, I'd like air conditioning and it has to serve the house aswell

buoyant bridge
#

standard residential panel here is 200A split phase and 100A split phase in older buildings

proper gull
#

And load across the phases has to be balanced as well as possible so putting the house on one phase off of the main panel isn't allowed either

buoyant bridge
#

though many homes have 200-300A 3 phase 120V panels or higher amp split phase panels

buoyant bridge
#

only older 100A panels even let you do that, newer 200A panels are designed so it's nearly impossible to overload one phase but not the other

#

Like at my old house I had one side of the panel filled with 240V breakers and it was genuinely unable to overload a single phase even though the other side was all 120 breakers (though this was a 300A panel)

proper gull
#

I wonder what the cost difference is between getting a high amp non standard connection vs just getting high voltage and a dedicated transformer

buoyant bridge
#

too much to think about

#

when I had my line run from the pole to the first CT cabinet on the property over a decade ago DP&L charged me so much I had to take out a pretty sizable loan

I think it actually was. I used to have a lot of ram issues because I was running ram faster than my motherboard could handle after upgrading ram. Ended up solving it by getting a new motherboard since I didn't want to downclock my ram. I didn't even think about connecting the two, this was awhile ago.

That's my one gripe with AMD. I wish I would have went with them (for various reasons) but I got burned with the 13900k/14900k issues. However if i ever switch to them I'm going to have to downclock my ram since it's 6600MT/s and likely won't run well with AMD. Oh well, at least I have a good kit. I'll probably wait a few years when AM6 eventually releases someday, my CPU should be fine for years.

# gritty panther I would've gotten 192GB DDR5 if AMD's IMC wasn't shit

Real. Reason I went with 96GB instead of 128GB or whatever is just because I only wanted two ram sticks. I'm on Intel but I know ram can be more unstable in general with 4 sticks (depending on the task and whatnot) and I just didn't want to deal with it. I have more ram than I need for what I do and it's in two sticks. It's fine.
