144hz monitors display a new frame every 7ms. Overclocking it to 190hz makes it so it refreshes every 5.26ms. which is a 1.74ms improvement, for free, with no visual artifacts. That difference is larger than going from 240Hz to 360Hz (~1.5ms difference).

If I were to push it further than 190hz, that is when I've noticed issues with timings and color artifacts.
This cheap 144Hz TN panel from 2015 has very little processing, and the response times aren't adjustable in the OSD (there is a small amount of overshoot, but nothing too major, I've measured 3.5ms B2W and 0.9ms GTG best case, mostly hovering around the 1.5-2ms response time).

So, I've been having this issue where my pc has been showing a black screen after the bios posts (MSI logo shows) but before the Windows login appears. I suspected it was related to the Nvidia driver and tried a number of different drivers to fix it. The issue disappeared when using the default Microsoft graphics driver...

Fast forward to today, I changed a setting in my bios for the PCIE generation and the black screen issue disappeared!

By default, the setting is set to auto, but I set it specifically to gen 3 to match the riser cable I'm using (and I guess the PCIE slot of the B550i mobo I have). Does any of this make sense?

I'm relieved the issue is resolved, but after months of working on this issue I'm just surprised that maybe all it took was setting the generation to 3 instead of auto. 🤔
