I wouldn't recommend linux on a device you main daily

void eagle
#

vscode is good but thats the exception rather than the rule

winged sky
#

Photoshop also works on linux now i believe, or that could have also been a wine compat

void eagle
#

either scam or lying about condition

#

if you do get it check the drive status

ebon marlin
#

Ask to see SMART details

random gyro
void eagle
#

i know it does w pirated versions

#

idk about the legit DRM/spyware thing adobe uses (DRM is spyware)

ebon marlin
winged sky
random gyro
random gyro
void eagle
#

it can

void eagle
#

though you cant buy it legit anymore and i cant offer advice on how to get it here

random gyro
#

but microsoft publisher....

void eagle

they wanted like $80 to cancel a free trial, fuck them

winged sky
random gyro
void eagle
#

libreoffice or be a true chad and learn LaTeX

#

its the ultimate at formatting stuff

random gyro
#

yeah good point

void eagle
#

although it looks like this

random gyro
#

i can also learn adobe indesign so

void eagle
#

but it produces this beautiful output

random gyro
#

what distro though...

void eagle
#

you basically write in its programming language and can compile to PDF, HTML, whatever else

#

TeX Live is the recommended LaTeX distro i belive

random gyro
#

no im referring to linux

void eagle
#

oh sorry im a bit too autistic

#

I use Endeavour OS myself (Arch based, btw) but if youre new id recommend Fedora or Mint

random gyro
random gyro
#

AmogOS on a shitty toshiba...

void eagle
#

okay then use arch or something

gray sierra
void eagle
#

im a girl

buoyant bridge

I only have 8 firefox tabs open.

#

and electtorrent is a fucking electron app

void eagle

void eagle
#

?

#

wdym? amd has linux drivers baked in to the kernel

buoyant bridge
#

the AMD Pro hardware is required to not be able to run Linux and be pro enabled.

random gyro
buoyant bridge
random gyro
#

i can finally "i use arch btw" to my friends

void eagle
#

AI disproved you and linked sources to disprove you

buoyant bridge
void eagle
#

The user's premise is incorrect;
AMD PRO hardware is fully compatible with Linux, and AMD specifically provides "PRO" software editions and open-source drivers for various Linux distributions. It does not require Windows to be "PRO enabled."
AMD is known for its strong, open-source support for Linux, with drivers for both CPUs and GPUs being integrated directly into the Linux kernel and the MESA user-space libraries, providing a hassle-free experience for most users.
Key points regarding AMD PRO hardware and Linux:

  • Official Linux Support: AMD offers official, proprietary drivers known as AMD Software: PRO Edition for Linux for specific enterprise distributions like Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL), Ubuntu, and Oracle Linux.
  • Open-Source Advantage: For most users, the open-source drivers already included in the Linux kernel are sufficient and often perform as well as or better than the proprietary drivers for general use and gaming. This means that the hardware generally "just works" out of the box with modern Linux distributions.
  • Specific Features: The proprietary AMD PRO drivers are typically only needed for specific professional functionalities, such as certain compute acceleration libraries (ROCm, for example) used in machine learning and AI applications.
  • Broad Compatibility: AMD processors, including Ryzen and Threadripper, work well with all standard Linux distributions. The lead developer of the Linux kernel is known to use an all-AMD machine
#

on top of that..

#

maybe its not as good supported as consumer hardware, but i see no reason it wouldnt work

buoyant bridge
void eagle
#

probably in the BIOS?

#

it depends on your organization

buoyant bridge
#

I own the laptops personally

void eagle
#

id be fucking shocked if you cant disabel it at all

buoyant bridge
#

they both say "Due to AMD policy Secure boot is required on this model, Please contact (mfg) for options in switching to a non pro model to disable this feature"

#

both are PRO models with a PRO chipset

void eagle
#

the fuck? ive ltierally never heard of this

#

maybe its very recent???

ebon marlin
buoyant bridge
void eagle

GNU IceCat, formerly known as GNU IceWeasel, is a completely free version of the Mozilla Firefox web browser distributed by the GNU Project. Its official releases were compatible with Linux, Windows, Android and macOS.Currently, official releases of IceCat are being distributed only through GNU Guix.
IceCat is released as a part of GNUzilla, GNU...

buoyant bridge
ebon marlin
buoyant bridge
#

AND i contacted lenovo support they offered to exchange my T14s for a non PRO model for an additional $150 or a Intel model for free. on a basis of the fact they had forgotten to list these laptops are locked to specific OSes on the product page

void eagle
#

steam is free, but it is not libre

#

icecat is entirely libre because it removes all non-free (proprietary) code from firefox

buoyant bridge
#

anyways I'm waiting on my Intel T14s g6 so I can run Solus again.

void eagle
#

but its also firefox without AI bloat

buoyant bridge
buoyant bridge
ebon marlin
buoyant bridge
#

99% of firefox's issues stem from fucking quantum

ebon marlin
void eagle

chrome is some AI browser slopfest now

buoyant bridge

ladybird exists.

void eagle

webkit exists.

void eagle

void eagle

ebon marlin
#

Edge for example is miles better than any other browser after a couple clicks

void eagle
buoyant bridge
void eagle
ebon marlin
#

Lightest and fastest Chromium browser that doesnt suck ass

void eagle
buoyant bridge
void eagle
#

last time i itried it couldnt render youtube

ebon marlin
#

One of the best mainstream chromium browsers out there

void eagle
#

thats maybe its eventual goal, but it is nowhere near there

ebon marlin
buoyant bridge
#

its so good at predicting shit its unreal

void eagle
ebon marlin
#

?

#

Edge is literally one of the best browsers out there

void eagle
#

its chromium with the "added trust and safety of microsoft" as they put it

jaunty apex
#

Microsoft Google Chromium Explorer

void eagle
#

edge is literally awful

buoyant bridge
ebon marlin
#

Have you ever used Edge

void eagle
#

chromium is okay but now its being AI-ified

void eagle
ebon marlin
#

Yes I main it

void eagle
#

unfortunate

ebon marlin
#

For a good reason

void eagle
#

enjoy your bing i guess

buoyant bridge
#

I used to main edge on linux

jaunty apex
#

Meanwhile people maining operagx

ebon marlin
jaunty apex
void eagle
random gyro
#

epic battlestation?

buoyant bridge
# void eagle enjoy your bing i guess

you can just change it to searx and disable more of its telemtry than you can in vanilla firefox in like 15 mins and on firefox it'd take a gazilion years to do something even half as well

void eagle
random gyro
void eagle
buoyant bridge
#

in typical microsoft fashion there is actual telemtry toggles :sob;

gray sierra
#

mochi have you played life is strange

random gyro
gray sierra
#

what about last of us

ebon marlin
buoyant bridge
void eagle
#

youre literally using a closed source browser made by one of the most infamous companies for data mining and resetting settings

random gyro
void eagle
#

god speed to you, but im not crazy enough to do that

ebon marlin
#

Everyone does it atp

jaunty apex
#

I mean I was kinda with them till they pulled this take. Because profiles.js and or librewolf exists

buoyant bridge
void eagle
ebon marlin
#

You're spending way too much of your time being paranoid

left trellis
#

Whyd he stop respindin

void eagle
#

And youre not spending enough time caring about your privacy like you should. People like you are the reason companies can exploit their userbase and sell their data. Do better.

buoyant bridge

like you listed a fucking databroker in your companies that "don't datamine" 😭

jaunty apex
buoyant bridge
#

mozilla's telemtry is a oracle product too lmfao

ebon marlin
#

The mcdonalds app after finding out that i like burgers

buoyant bridge
#

(oracle one of the absolute worst data brokers)

void eagle
# jaunty apex Sources tho

Sources: They pull it out of their ass because they are so upset that I said Edge is a POS that spies on you more than the KGB in the 50s

buoyant bridge
ebon marlin
buoyant bridge
void eagle
jaunty apex
#

I have a system for that

azure topaz
#

you can turn off the data mining in edge and doing that makes it on par with chrome

#

if not more, because edge supports DV and other stuff that chrome doesnt

void eagle
#

At what point do you release that the convinience is not worth the tradeoff

buoyant bridge
#

companies that don't work with oracle are INFINITELY more trust worthy than fucking companies that out source their ESR maintence to a company known for being one of the absolute worst for data mining 😭

limpid dune
#

I have touched enough microsoft products to know that The Taint never wears off

ebon marlin
buoyant bridge
buoyant bridge
#

its like 3 flags. you need to use 50 or so in firefox and like 30 in chrome

void eagle
#

Windows 11 is proof of the fact that they dont care what you disable, let alone their users

azure topaz
buoyant bridge
ebon marlin
#

Firefox is genuinely one of the worst browsers out there

azure topaz
#

thats not a hot take i agree

buoyant bridge
#

its the home version that does NOT respect your changes you cant offically make

void eagle
buoyant bridge
#

microsoft products respect the changes they allow you to make, 3rd party tweaks break with updates.

void eagle
#

I laugh at people that use Edge unironically

limpid dune
jaunty apex
#

I never assumed windows respected my preferences since after 7 ngl

buoyant bridge
azure topaz
#

laughing at someone for their browser choice shows that you may need help

void eagle
#

Chrome is at least a good browser and not filled with Microsoft bloatware

ebon marlin
nimble garden
#

Is LTT still looking for that refrigerant for their super cooler machine?

jaunty apex
#

If you use windows you may as well.just use edge ngl

void eagle
buoyant bridge
void eagle
#

hell id sooner put 64 GB of RAM in my PC to satisfy Firefoxs nature than ever use Edge

ebon marlin
#

I tried giving firefox a chance at one point and that didn't last long when I couldn't even access my school stuff lmao

limpid dune
ebon marlin
void eagle
#

Okay how does it not work w Google Docs

buoyant bridge
#

I haven't been actually playing for more than like 30 mins 😭

void eagle
#

I use it fine in Firefox

buoyant bridge
ebon marlin
limpid dune
#

??? I've heard firefox does have slight compatibility problems but I've never personally had them

buoyant bridge
#

if you had an AMD gpu for like 5 years they'd just not work flat out.

ebon marlin
#

Google classroom and google meet is what I used for school

limpid dune
#

also, the forbidden option: build Chrome from source, no Google

azure topaz
#

or just download chromium

buoyant bridge
# void eagle wdym integrations

docs has a integrations plugin to allow it to maintain similar speed to chromium browsers. and adds a few local features, its imfamously broken on firefox. aswell as buisnesses and schools typically requiring it.

void eagle
azure topaz
#

or ungoogled chromium

void eagle
#

I used to use it for a while

azure topaz
#

google's sync features are pretty great though so im good

buoyant bridge
#

firefox sync has been fine for me, thats the main reason i haven't switched.

#

you cant disable most of the telemtry on chromium browsers or edge without also disabling all capability for syncing

limpid dune
#

also if Ladybird becomes stable I'm 100% switching to that

buoyant bridge
#

^ same

azure topaz
#

yeah thats why i disable the optional features and call it good i dont really have a place to gaf

#

i literally work with the people who are stealing my data often, i kinda dont have a choice here

buoyant bridge
#

I dont really have a big issue with firefox's shit resource usage but holy fuck its embarrasing to mozilla

limpid dune
#

finna run google'd Chrome with each tab in a seperate VM

jaunty apex
azure topaz
#

nobody should have a genuine issue with browser resource management

buoyant bridge
buoyant bridge
ebon marlin
#

Few years ago when Edge was actually shit I used a bat file to get rid of Edge and I can't install Edge back so I'm contemplating a full system reset to get Edge back to working lmao

limpid dune
azure topaz
buoyant bridge
#

I have a 12900KF and 128GB of DDR5 (and Im about to switch over to a Xeon W9 when i get the time to swap my board n shit)

jaunty apex
azure topaz
#

^

buoyant bridge
#

low end is slowly starting to become 16GB but rn its still 8GB

azure topaz
#

nobody here has come here with issues on firefox and ram usage idk

azure topaz
#

i cannot deploy machines at work with 8gb

buoyant bridge
azure topaz
#

everyone has an issue at some point w/8gb

limpid dune
buoyant bridge
jaunty apex
#

Why torrenting app in electron

#

Why not qt

buoyant bridge
#

electorrent is for connecting to qt instance lol

azure topaz
#

unless they have machines that do auto cad, then by default those get 32

buoyant bridge
#

qt can run headless on a server and I prefer it cus I dont need to have my desktop vpn'd 24/7 (vpns are useless besides hiding ur IP)

limpid dune
# buoyant bridge electron app vs firefox

to be fair to Firefox: firefox will deallocate things if it experiences memory pressure, kinda like what games do with VRAM, so it's not 100% fair to look at unpressured memory usage and say "big number!"

azure topaz
#

ram usage is dynamic to how much you have

buoyant bridge
azure topaz
#

91 is not 100%=not pressured

#

unused ram is bad ram

#

if there is unused ram you are okay

buoyant bridge
#

and 2GB of firefox's memory usage is litterally from the GPU process while looking at the firefox home page.

azure topaz
#

if the program and or os isnt complaining about lack of memory its not a problem

jaunty apex
jaunty apex
#

Small number make me happy

buoyant bridge
#

having open ram is inefficent by design.

limpid dune
azure topaz
#

having a rig with 64 and never going over 32 is wasteful

buoyant bridge
pulsar root
#

Is there any difference between 4x8gb 2x16GB other than one is more sticks than the other

azure topaz
#

no

limpid dune
#

my 32GB linux system sits at like 5GB usage 99% of the time, it's only when I fire up 7Zip or CAD or BeamNG or something that I actually use it

jaunty apex
azure topaz
#

one iss more ranks and may make a moderate difference (less than 2%)

#

on DDR5 2 vs 4 sticks does matter but thats DDR4 stuff

#

please do not buy 8GB DDR5

buoyant bridge
limpid dune
buoyant bridge
#

I just havent torn my PC apart to swap it in yet, might build a new PC for it tbh.

azure topaz
#

like yes but its unimportant

#

faster as in 5000 vs 4800mhz (arbitrary) whicch youre not doing in a normal system

buoyant bridge

"intel CPUs can use 300W" the one im about to use can use like 500

#

nahhh, my old DDR3 NAS dropped from 2133 to 2000 stable when I went from two to four DIMMs, it might not be as important on older RAMs but it's there

thats 133mhz

thats no performance loss

buoyant bridge
azure topaz

DDR5 in itself has a shitty form of ECC even on consumer sticks

buoyant bridge
#

fair.

azure topaz
#

DDR5 on 4 sticks has no issues at 4000 or 4400mhz

#

ddr5 on 4 sticks will have issues at 6000mhz

#

this is not because ddr5 sucks

ryzen 7000 and ryzen 9000 chips boost very strange
they target 95C in practically every scenario and will get there unless they run into other limiters like the global frequency limit or voltage limits

#

especially during shader compilation or high core workloads

#

95c is normal, you have to tell your computer not to crank the fans like crazy at 95c because of that though

cosmic stratus
#

Oh I forgot 7000 series and above loves high temps

dusk patio
azure topaz
#

if you are below your cpus rated boost frequency while under a consistent load at 95c thats when you can worry

#

if you are at like fuckin, 5+ghz ignore 95c

wet ember
#

I'm not gonna ask another question to not piss you off

azure topaz
#

cpu is doing its job

limpid dune
azure topaz
#

GPUs do a similar thing, they boost way past their rated boost clocks until they hit some limit, usually power, but now sometimes voltage

#

AMD decided to make their cpus do essentially the same thing

cosmic stratus

azure topaz

less gpu usage = more power limit = more boosting until they run into one of the other 2 limiters

#

such as voltage or temp

cosmic stratus
#

Mm ok

azure topaz
#

everything is constrained by like 3 limiting factors

#

power, temp, volts

#

making one mad is enough to slow the whole thing down

azure topaz
limpid dune
lapis furnace
limpid dune
#

Same logic applies to GPUs

azure topaz
#

the cpu is boosting as hard as it possibly can fathom until it literally thinks its going to crash

#

it changes clocks and voltages thousands of times a second

#

this is kind of why overclocking has lost its magic

limpid dune
lapis furnace
cosmic stratus
limpid dune
#

it's a big part of why people always talk about "AVX workloads" because the AVX engines are massive and will definitely cause the CPU to downclock

cosmic stratus
#

I got kinda pissed when I saw my 1680v3 downclock to 4.0ghz when it would stick to 4.3 just fine in other workloads like the stress tests I was using to tune it

limpid dune
#

annotated picture of a Zen 5 core

#

to be fair to AMD, the vector half also does AVX and AVX2, but it's still a HUGE part of the CPU

Gotta dedicate a whole portion just for an instruction set
