Hey guys, I need a quick opinion before I do something stupid 😅
I have a new motherboard (Gigabyte Aorus X870 Elite WiFi7) and I noticed that one pin in the LGA1700 socket looks slightly bent.
I tried seating the CPU (Intel chip) about 2–3 times because I wasn’t sure if I was aligning it correctly.
Now that one pin looks a bit off, but it’s not touching any others and everything else seems fine.

I’m scared to install the CPU because I don’t want to short anything or damage the board.

Do you think it’s safe to mount the CPU and test it, or should I take it to a repair shop to have them check the socket alignment?

Been collecting parts to build around the 1994 build the family had, based around the DX2-66. Sure, the DX4-100 was around but that was more popular amongst prebuilt OEMs/SIs (in our area at least) as it wasn't a go-to especially it was in a weird cross-roads between the popular DX2-66 and the Socket 5 Pentiums that were also releasing during that time

and Pentiums were ungodly expensive in 94 as the 486DX2-66 was the more realistic high-end choice at the time the family got it

Yeah, at the time Pentiums were the equivalent to buying threadrippers. The only Pentium I can see being a reasonable option in 1994 was the Pentium 75. And then there are the PODs for Socket 3 which dropped in 1996.... the thing about those were once they dropped; you could easily buy a Pentium or equivalent class CPU and Socket 7 motherboard for cheaper than what they went for (and was a more choice as the Socket 7 platform had reached maturity and had a better upgrade path)

youre still in windows 11 if you revert the menu, not sure what your point is

windows isnt letting you do that, youre literally having to download another program just to get features back that were taken away

are you surprised tho? You have to do that for a lot with winodws 11

does anyone know if theres a way around the MOK key block on 8th gen Ryzen AI Pro stuff?

Guys is running 2x8GiB 5600 and a 2x16GiB 6000 on DDR5 better than running just the 2x16?

buoyant bridge
#

do you mean 4x8GiB?

stark spear
#

No

#

Using all 4 DIMM slots

buoyant bridge
#

what CPU are you on?

stark spear
#

For my friend think he has a 7600X

buoyant bridge
#

consumer platforms should never use all 4 dimm slots on DDR5 it loses preformance and creates a ton of instability

buoyant bridge
stark spear
#

Yeah

#

I though so

#

I’ve always that was a major flaw in DDR5

buoyant bridge
#

it only affects consumer platforms and the instability is more so an AMD thing (very common on intel too though unless ur on a pro chipset)

steel umbra
stark spear
#

Like why on earth would anyone run 4 DIMMs then unless maybe you have like a server and need high capacity

buoyant bridge
stark spear
#

Yeah

#

That what I though was weird is how the newer technology has more downsides

buoyant bridge
#

it has to do with the higher CAS latency coming from higher memory speeds, high end DDR3 was only like CL14 , DDR5 is CL28 at the VERY lowest (lower is better)

stark spear
#

Yeah

#

Forgot about CAS latency

buoyant bridge
#

and this is usually common on newer tech, a lot of govt stuff stays on old tech for so long for stability concerns that just aren't a problem on simplier designs.

#

Intel is still making some brand new 28nm chips for the US govt on contract for LGA 1851 lol

ebon marlin
#

I got a 2x16gb 6000cl36 kit since it was 90€ I'll manually tune it when I can get my am5 boards fixed up

stark spear
#

And I think iirc most people should not got above like CL34 and ideal should be 30 or 32

buoyant bridge
# ebon marlin Jesus lmao

its for power control stuff. AMD moving too fast is why AMD is not allowed at all on critical infastructure in most states

#

dosen't matter if the new 0.8nm intel chips will be better in every way and the current gen 7nm(?) chips are better in every way theres weird inconsistentcy things that won't even matter to home users but can mean a LOT on critical stuff so the 28nm chips stick around

stark spear
#

Yeah that makes sense

#

All I’ve heard about DDR6 so far is around double the bandwidth

buoyant bridge
#

DDR6 is still like 2-3 years away ain't it?

stark spear
#

Which in theory sounds cool but like how much faster will RAM he before we need more bandwidth

stark spear
buoyant bridge
#

I mean we run into more so voltage and controller issues than we do bandwidth issues rn and DDR5 has gone upto like 8600 in laptops

stark spear
#

But I still it’s a good 2 years before retail at least

buoyant bridge
#

we kinda already hit the speed limits for standard socketed RAM lol

buoyant bridge
#

my new laptop comes with 8600 afaik

stark spear
#

What the GiB/s on that

#

For copying

buoyant bridge
#

not sure haven't tested it

#

its a Thinkpad T14s G6 (AMD PRO)

#

got a really trade in for my Thinkpad with the 12900HK and 128GB DDR5 4800

stark spear
#

Bro what is your workload?

buoyant bridge
#

ima end up having to trade in the T14s again because it can ONLY run GAC windows

#

can't run LTSC, can't run linux
gonna have to get a intel model or a rare ass non PRO amd model

buoyant bridge
#

General Avaliability Channel

stark spear
#

So like consumer generic Windows?

buoyant bridge
#

basically all windows versions except for LTSC and Education

stark spear
#

Yep right

buoyant bridge
#

(in this case atleast because they all share bootloader MOK keys excluding those 2)

stark spear
#

Microsoft is really testing how much they can screw up windows rn

buoyant bridge
#

this isnt even a windows thing this is an thing AMD requires

stark spear
#

Yeah Im more referring to all the update nonsense wit things breaking etc stupid bugs

buoyant bridge
#

all PCs with CPUs starting with Ryzen 5000 from the PRO brands have to enforce secure boot and disable MOK key enrollments, starting with 7000 OEMs can't even decide the keys they come with.

#

this effectively FORCES them to run Windows or paid RHEL

gleaming rose
#

as does fedora

buoyant bridge
stark spear
gleaming rose

gleaming rose
#

Debian too

stark spear
buoyant bridge
buoyant bridge
#

these AMD pro systems don't get the Microsoft UEFi Security Certifcate one they JUST get the GAC windows one

stark spear
#

Im a little confused as to why this all matters?

#

What is the issue at hand

buoyant bridge
#

microsoft has another UEFI security certifcate that ONLY works for GAC windows and not linux

buoyant bridge
#

like its not possible at all on newish ones

stark spear
#

Ohh because of secure boots signing correct so the keys?

buoyant bridge
#

mhm, and secure boot can't be turned off on them either.

stark spear
#

Thats actually crazy stupid

buoyant bridge
#

Lenovo used to have a special contract so thinkpads could still enroll MOK keys AND have a pro cpu but it expired right before Ryzen 8000 so even thinkpads can't now.

stark spear
#

So Im assuming this happens because they just don’t see the point including signing for Linux on these CPUs because they don’t really care

buoyant bridge
stark spear
#

Yeah

buoyant bridge
#

the OEM isn't allowed to load other MOK keys.

stark spear
#

That’s what I mean they only really sign for Windows correct

buoyant bridge
#

well the paid version of RHEL is there too

raw olive
#

hello guys kinda off topic but anyone from serbia here? im having a trip soon, i need to know about current weather situation and shit so i can pack properly

stark spear
buoyant bridge
raw olive
buoyant bridge
#

too lazy to go find microsoft's page on this rn but basically linux distros use the last 2 while windows can use all 4

stark spear
buoyant bridge
#

they only have the one that can boot MS Windows and they have a seperate one for the PAID verison of RHEL

stark spear
#

But why….

#

Don’t they have that certificate or whatever

#

What makes AMD Pro devices any different

buoyant bridge
#

and AMD PRO is the buisness line of Ryzen and Threadrippers

#

they also lock socketed CPUs to motherboards on the PRO stuff lol

stark spear
#

Right so they are essentially Gatekeeping

buoyant bridge
#

like you can't take a AM5 or AM4 Ryzen PRO cpu out of a board and put it into the EXACT same board because they have efuses that blow on first boot locking that CPU to the board it was installed for permantly (this is called PSB)

#

the AM5 ones are also fucking vendor locked

stark spear
#

Ok ok wait

#

The his sounds suspiciously stupid

buoyant bridge
#

its genuinely just them trying to kill the used market off

stark spear
#

Are you sure this is true I swear people have switched thread rippers amongst many boards

buoyant bridge
#

buisness PCs make up a large part of the used market, thats why its so easy to find cheap intel ones but not AMD

buoyant bridge
#

like the 7990 can be swapped but not the 7995WX

stark spear
#

Are all threadrippers considered Pro or no?

buoyant bridge
#

not anymore it was like that for one generation

stark spear
#

Ok no I see

#

That really is so scummy though

#

Blowing a fuse binding a CPU to a boar has to bet he most like stupid thing I’ve heard companies do

buoyant bridge
stark spear
#

Ok so then my next question is how more performant are “Pro” CPUs

buoyant bridge
#

like the normal X and G series CPUs are able to do it too just currently AMD doesn't make use of it

stark spear
#

Damn

#

And people pay for these “extra security features”

buoyant bridge
#

they did it like this because buisnesses will only buy systems with OOBM and to get OOBM on AMD you need a PRO CPU and Chipset which means you HAVE to buy OEM stuff from the pro lines which does this

#

and thus the buisnesses can't sell these systems off when they're done with them

buoyant bridge
#

like you can get the same exact APU thats in the rog ally but its PRO line only

stark spear
#

Of course they did..

buoyant bridge
stark spear
buoyant bridge
#

basically bios tracking and management remotely

stark spear
#

Oh ohhhh so kinda like when pro intel cpu devices are enrolled with ME?

buoyant bridge
#

esentially yeah, to get the network connected version of ME you need a vpro cpu which is intel's equiv of AMD pro

#

the only cool feature you get at all with the AMD pro cpus they dont offer normally is you can reinstall windows/rhel from the internet without any download media or OS on the computer

#

(but vpro has this too for windows/rhel/ubuntu)

stark spear
buoyant bridge
#

not quite, the boards for AMD pro stuff will only accept AMD pro stuff

#

starting with Ryzen 7000 they won't even accept standard ram

stark spear
#

This whole AMD pro line sounds hella snot consumer so far

buoyant bridge
#

the main point of it is force buisnesses to buy it and kill the used market by not having it be flooded 2-3 years after the gen is released

stark spear
#

I never knew any of this stuff before, I knew AMD had Pro line CPUs
