I think im gonna sell my current laptop because the Ryzen 3 3300U just doesn’t deliver the performance I need. I plan to upgrade to the Minisforum 795S7 barebones, which costs around $470 on Amazon. I chose this system because it’s compact yet supports low-profile GPUs, like the RTX 5060 8GB with an 8-pin power connector.

My build plan is to start with a single 24GB DDR5 RAM stick, bringing the total cost to about $1,006 after tax. Later, I’ll add another 24GB stick, bringing the total to around $1,089. That setup gives me a powerful, compact gaming PC for a reasonable price.

Since the 795S7 isn’t proprietary, I can easily upgrade the case and power supply in the future and drop in a higher-end GPU, such as a 5070 Ti Super or better, depending on my budget at the time.

if you run the installer and have a 2nd gen or newer intel CPU, TPM 1.2, and Secure boot on itll tell you the system isn't compliant with the full hardware requirements

this is a cheaply built monitor and those are the only screws actually holding it together the rest is plastic clips

for me the biggest realization was that depending on the model, all one needs is a modern DDR5 system (ideally) or at least top speed DDR4 system for relatively moderate speed. But it really comes down to the model.

that qwen3-coder speed for me is acceptable, no need to push via GPU. Gemma speed would be bearable, but annyoing

for comparison, same Qwen3-coder (this time via ollama & their version of the model, but on the 9950x it had same speed if i remember correctly) on 3900x+128GB DDR4-3600 dropped to 19.5 t/s, i5-8500+64GB DDR4-2666 dropped to 11 t/s

even that i5-8500 speed is somewhat doable. Not for autocomplete or instant answers, but for planning/designing phase one could live with that speed for 'free' (considering these are older computers)
