i am so angry at myself. I have three Haswell era boards, two H81 and one Z87, which i got through various trades. The two H81 boards came with bent pins; they work, but each have it's own set of issues, and what is worst, they both had only one PCIe slot longer than x1. On other side both of these H81 boards had NVMe support for some reason.

The third board was a pretty good Gigabyte Z87X-UD3H, which doesn't support NVMe, but has pretty good PCIe layout. Before today, i couldn't get it to show up NVMe drives at all, even when not booting from it. The reason ? In UEFI settings, the Storage OpROMs were set to "Legacy only" 😄

set it to UEFI first, used my refind nvme boot drive thingy, and boom, it worked on first try

not saying it is a perfect old board, but certainly better than the other two 😄
