First off, to clarify some things:

The front of the case, and the inside are separated by a metal mounting area, with the side of it that's towards the front of the case having around ~40mm of clearance
The inside has ~28mm clearance (space free with the GPU installed)

I am thinking of mounting the radiator INSIDE the case, and the fans on the mounting area for the front
Effectively making it so the radiator is the part which I'd see from the outside of the case

It has to do with volume of air pulled in, also the air pulled in would be warm, not cool. Generally speaking, you want to pull cool air in through the front, ant push hot air out through the top and sides. Any air going through the radiator will be warm.
