Most androids have about 1-2 years of security updates. After that it can be a gamble without installing an updated ROM. Just because they are 6 years old doesn’t mean it’s updated. When I say short life I’m not talking about the device bricking I’m talking about the software running the device.

I still have a kindle fire tablet 2nd gen that works great but had to update the rom to make it more secure than it was. I do enough to walk the wire with safety (on purpose cause i love playing with fire at times) but I like to mitigate the risk with a little safety net at least.

5-6 years is till to old anything 5 or newer is kinda fine as long as its the pro and has the better chipset the mini and the regular and I think air as well need to be 4 or less years old to take advantage of the chipset upgrade.
