#

my fault

#

but it probably isn’t hazardous….

balmy tapir
#

what is it 😭😭

#

lol

arctic furnace
#

just kidding it’s a chemical compound can’t really remember tbh

balmy tapir
#

i've had the occasional sample spill we love decon ❤️❤️

arctic furnace
#

Man i love my job so much

#

it’s so cool

#

I’m on a W-9 1099

dark comet
#

Would it be more worth it to get the rtx 4080 over the 4070 ti super if it's an extra $200 (cad)

arctic furnace
#

I’m getting paid untaxed until the end of the year

#

I need to save a lot of money tbh

arctic furnace
#

Why would you rather get a 4070 over a 4080

#

4080 is better

#

The reason why i upgraded from a 3050 to a 3080

dark comet
#

how is there such a huge price jump from 4080 to 4090 though

arctic furnace
#

tbh I still have no idea…

#

I really want a 5090

dark comet
#

I guess the performance is a lot better with 24gb vram?

arctic furnace
#

I want to make an overkill PC

dark comet
arctic furnace
#

I want to be able to run 4k 120 hz

#

rn I use a 4k 60hz TV

#

I’m getting like 70-80 fps on most games

#

and that’s with high settings

#

not even maximum

#

and forget ray tracing that’s out of the question 😭

#

Would be like 30 FPS if i turned it on

latent pasture
#

for 200 cad
dumbing it down to 4070 over 4080 is stupid

arctic furnace
#

but we don’t know the exact model

latent pasture
arctic furnace
#

?

latent pasture
#

they literally said 4080 vs 4070ti super

arctic furnace
#

Ohhhh 200 cad

strange atlas
#

RIGHT AFTER i bought the 1440p monitor price of it got down by %18 i'm gonna cry

#

I paid 250 dollars for it 😦

dark comet
arctic furnace
#

not much tbh

strange atlas
#

If i cancel the order it will give my money back in 15 days i wonder if i should take risk and cancel my order

arctic furnace
#

might as well

arctic furnace
#

Might as well if it’s on sale

latent pasture
#

cuz ur about to pay that for +8% fps

strange atlas
dark comet
#

whether thats a 5070 ti, 9070 xt, or 4070 tis or 4080 idgaf anymore

latent pasture
#

come back when you have prices
the other guy here is assuming ur rich af and 200 cad is cheap change

dark comet
arctic furnace
strange atlas
arctic furnace
#

ok

dark comet
strange atlas
dark comet
#

Can someone please tell me what this means...

strange atlas
#

I bought the monitor for 250 and that felt expensive to me :d

latent pasture
#

up to you if thats worth -8% performance in non raytracing
or 15% if raytraced games

strange atlas
dark comet
strange atlas
latent pasture

strange atlas
dark comet
#

I checked and the b850 works fine, the b650 is just a bit cheaper thats all

latent pasture
#

it has bios flashback anyway

#

most b650s do

#

there are b850s at the same price if ur really afraid that the store will ship you an old stock mobo and dont want to flash bios on ur own

dark comet
#

Would it be more worth it to pay al ittle more for the b850

latent pasture
#

ur not even paying more, theres good b850s at 180-250 cad

dark comet
latent pasture
#

ye do that

dark comet
#

Bro this bundle looks nice, only problem is the ram

latent pasture
#

whats wrong with that

#

that bundle is kinda sade its not cheaper than if u bought the parts individually

dark comet
#

fr

dark comet
#

G.Skill Flare X5 32 GB is what i'm planning on rn

latent pasture
#

now this ones actually cheaper than buying individually
ram is still 32gb 6000

dark comet
#

Why are they all Corsair ram bruh

#

Is there that big of a difference though between rams

noble ermine
#

RN corsair RAM has the greatest inventory, therefore the lowest prices, it's even reaching SA.

#

I think they got a lot because they had a medium-high price point before and decided to speed up the cycling (and revenue rates), a couple of years ago i'd never had considered Corsair as the budget choice for a kit but i just got a 64 gb ddr5 rgb kit because it's the cheapest decent shielded ram, it used to be Hyper X's flat black rams but now apparently it's Corsair's Vengeance.

#

( i did pay a tiny bit extra for RGB but still paid cheaper than on other high quality kits )

steep pawn
#

bro i just reapplied thermal paste on my cpu (completely unessacary was just bored) and i realised my dumbass installed my ram wrong

steep pawn
limber nacelle

but frankly if you're not gonna manually tune it probably doesn't matter

noble ermine

i play mostly single player games anyways

dark comet
#

I will be too

#

I just saw the g.skill ripjaws v 32 GB for only 70 dollars

That's def the cheapest I've seen

What's the difference between the flare, ripjaws, and trident series?

dapper abyss
# grizzled frost your friend did what now

A friend super glued his CPU cooler onto his CPU...
Then I used a big screwdriver and I tore off the CPU socket...
then he screwed the power supply into the case with long wood screws because he didn't had the right ones... It didn't worked as planned, because he drilled 2 of the screws through the mains capacitor inside the power supply...
He plugged the CPU cables from the PSU into his GPU somehow, and the GPU was between 2 slots on the Mainboard...
And he plugged a NVME SSD into a SATA Power cable...
And he installed the RAM into the PCIe slot...
After he plugged it in a long BANG sound came out of the power supply including sparks...
It also tripped the braker...

I’m thinking of getting the 5070ti what’s the difference between the regular and the edition one

dawn tundra
#

Don't

#

TI's are always better but just don't get a 50 series right now

If you're using it for gaming

They stop making the 40 series

guys i just bought a HP Elitedesk 705 G4 Mini i plan on running a server with it, what's the best config for running servers on this thing

formal sonnet
torn elk

i want to run minecraft and teraria servers

I have an older HP ProDesk something something Mini running Proxmox that I use for testing things. Proxmox is nice because I can spin up Virtual Machines / LXC containers whenever I want.

torn elk

azure topaz

cuz right now im running two minecraft servers and it's maxing my memory out

an SSD is essential

sinful cobalt
azure topaz
azure topaz

theen you can use proxmox and linux say debian server or ubuntu server for your minecraft servers

sinful cobalt
torn elk

also im reading the specs and it says the cpu supports ram speeds 2933 what ram should i get

formal sonnet
# torn elk i want to run minecraft and teraria servers

If you want an adventure and are technically savvy on the server side of things, you can give Proxmox or TrueNAS Scale a try. If you want a simple-er-ish setup, I would recommend installing Debian Linux, then install https://cubecoders.com/AMP on top of that OS.

The powerful but simple to use game server control panel. Supports both Windows and Linux, easy to install and supports dozens of game servers and applications.

# azure topaz this is incredible software btw

110% absolutely. I try not to shill, but both CubeCoders AMP and StableBit DrivePool software are hands down some of the best inexpensive server and storage related software I've purchased. And CubeCoders has a hella good Discord Community, too.

azure topaz
haughty compass

But all 4 sticks are 3000mhz

dawn tundra

I'm trying not to expose the tape to light

azure topaz

Not all ram has embedded profiles, check the ram specs (which include timings) and set everything right if you don't get presets.

I also had 8GB in my HP ProDesk Mini PC initially. This was a bit anemic for a basic Minecraft server (less than 10 people) but upgrading to 12GB and then 16GB solved most of my issues once I started hosting lightly modded Minecraft. The CPU has now become the limiting factor. I hope to rectify this if I can snag a newer Dell Optiplex Micro system from work.

b360+the 8400 cannot use 3000mhz memory

haughty compass

Ah...

azure topaz

highest speed is indeed 2666

haughty compass

azure topaz

its no biggie, just wait until you can afford am5 before buying anything else

#

8400 should be capable enough

haughty compass
#

I see

dawn tundra

@noble ermine

#

This should be good

#

Sorry for the poor quality of the image I was trying to keep them direct light off of it

noble ermine
#

Woah

dawn tundra
#

Yeah I know

noble ermine
#

It does seem like a digital tape cartridge

dawn tundra
#

I also had torn down another PC that also had a floppy drive in it and this one does as well but there's nothing inside

#

100 GB

noble ermine
#

But do you have a machine that takes it?

#

The tape cart

dawn tundra
#

No this is the only thing that I have and I but I'm pretty sure it should work

noble ermine
#

I mean it works but you need to grab the data and operate the internals

dawn tundra
#

Yes let me send you the computer I got

haughty compass
azure topaz
#

naw just save

dawn tundra
azure topaz
#

only like 300ish dollars is needed toget into am5

dawn tundra
#

I've been taking it apart to plug everything back in but I'm I have to get behind the motherboard I think but I can't also can't seem to find where to plug it in

azure topaz
haughty compass
#

o wow

azure topaz
#

yeah its not too bad

haughty compass
#

thats a lot less than I expected

noble ermine

That system looks wild, what's the sh3lf like thing in the middle?

azure topaz

especially when you already have a kinda modern computer

dawn tundra
#

Yeah I know it's two psus

azure topaz
#

diverts air

haughty compass
azure topaz
#

then get a gpu first, thats fine

noble ermine
#

That's the server you were talking about?

dawn tundra
#

Right now I'm trying to focus on plugging in some ribbon cables because I am plugged them to get a view at the tape

azure topaz
#

pick up a 9070xt and cope with it on the 8400 until you can buy am5 or somethin then

dawn tundra
#

Yes

azure topaz
#

or not eveen a 9070 and just something better likee a 3060

noble ermine
#

Nice, provided you can hook everything up it should work fine

haughty compass
#

where is the best place to look for gpus and like stuff like this? cus normally i just look on ebay

dawn tundra
#

Yeah I'm just needing to make sure that I put everything back together right and I'm trying to have hard to figure out how to find a slot to plug everything in because I can't find this four-pronged large thing slot I don't know

noble ermine
#

Oh, also if that's not the machine that used tape it probably needs drivers or something

azure topaz
haughty compass
#

woah a 9070 is so expensive DANger

dawn tundra
#

Yeah it was already in there I just took it out

azure topaz
#

yeah but its modern (literally brand new)

noble ermine
#

Oh, perfect

azure topaz
#

and about as good as a 5070ti ish

dawn tundra
#

Let me give you an update photo of what the PC looks right now as I'm investigating

azure topaz
#

but thats also why i brought up other gpus that arent brand new but newer and better than a 1060 3

dawn tundra
haughty compass
#

if I were to upgrade my gpu I would prob have to get a new psu as well

dawn tundra
#

I've been really careful

azure topaz
#

youd be surprised

noble ermine
#

Nice

azure topaz
#

if you have like a decent 550 or 650w you coulld probably leave it alone

#

or even a 450w if youre going for something like a 3060 or 4060

noble ermine
#

Also remember some drives have connectors that aren't necessary for operation

azure topaz
dawn tundra
#

Also I took apart another PC that I was able to get and I think it has the same CPU I think I might be able to put the other CPU slot to use

#

Oh crap I forgot about that

azure topaz
dawn tundra
azure topaz
#

idk man ddr2 was out by 2003

dawn tundra
#

Also from the other computer I got a GPU out of it

azure topaz
#

thats ddr bro

dawn tundra
#

Yeah it is ddr2

noble ermine
#

That's a secure storage unit, buddy, it's ok for it to be old

azure topaz
#

is it? looks weird

noble ermine
#

It uses tape

azure topaz
#

yo i understand that old is fine but this is kinda to the degree that its kinda useless besides just bein kinda neat

dawn tundra
#

Actually it has a DVD drive as well

azure topaz
#

i use a 10 year old workstation as my server

azure topaz
haughty compass
#

opened up our old family pc

dawn tundra

Well it's also contains some data that might be important and interesting

random gyro
azure topaz

azure topaz

haughty compass
#

should I replace my thermal paste for the cpu? cus im not sure when I last repasted it

#

or if I ever even have

dawn tundra
#

Also the paste was still malleable whenever I took off the CPU from the other computer

#

It wasn't hard and crusty it was kind of like putty

#

I think it was thermal putty I think I'm just stupid

#

I also got two other hard drives that I want to put into this thing

#

Cuz everything should match up

azure topaz
#

8400 doesnt draw a bunch of power and probably doesnt care anyways

noble ermine
#

U sure it wasn't an old industrial pad?

dawn tundra
#

Also it's the hot swap version which means it has two very easily interchangeable psus

dawn tundra
azure topaz
#

hes prolly right and its some garbage putty

dawn tundra
#

The metal on the cooler was aluminum

#

Instead of copper

noble ermine
#

True, i think 06 is a while before long indurance pads

azure topaz
#

yea

#

tim was wildly shit back then

dawn tundra
#

But it also has two custom blower fans for this

azure topaz
#

any paste today will surely out perform it

dawn tundra
#

Actually never mind I didn't actually have to get behind the motherboard to plug this in it's already been plugged in I'm just an idiot

#

They're supposed to wipe the hard drives before they give the stuff out if they do but I mean I'm not looking for any classified information you know I mean

haughty compass
# azure topaz not really if its not overheating

not sure if this is just a game issue or an indicator for something else, but when I play something cpu based like valorant I sometimes have random lag spikes, like every like 30-50s I will drop to like 0 fps for a milisecond + my fps goes down from around 200 when I first open the game to around 120 after an hour

dawn tundra
#

Everything was really easy to take apart it was pretty straightforward like it was built to be taken apart

haughty compass
#

the thing is then sometimes it just runs fine wihout any lag spikes (besides the fps becoming lower the longer i play)_

azure topaz
#

yeah that might be throttling a smidge may as well replace it

haughty compass
#

alr

#

that was the main reason I was thinking to replace the thermal paste

dawn tundra
#

@noble ermine so do you think I should put the GPU I got from the other computer into this one because it has an extra slot that's not being used up

#

Cuz I could absolutely do it

noble ermine
azure topaz
dawn tundra
#

Yes

#

It's all the same stuff

azure topaz
#

fuck it we ball

azure topaz
#

yeah exactly

noble ermine
#

Hehehe

azure topaz
#

this is the "its neat" part of the old server lol

noble ermine
#

What if there's some ancient cad planes in there

dawn tundra
#

Hell yeah also the other CPU of fits in the slot and I'm pretty sure it should work should we try that too?

haughty compass
#

would something like thermal grizzly hydronaut be fine?

sinful cobalt
#

big thanks to nvidia for fkin up my wifi connection -_-

azure topaz
dawn tundra
#

But it could be around the time

noble ermine
#

I mean, tape in a plane manufacturer

dawn tundra
#

Yeah

noble ermine
#

Might very well be cad planes

dawn tundra
#

Oh and let's not forget the floppy drive

#

They made mostly two-seater and one seater light air craft

dawn tundra
#

If you want to look up the company it's Magellan aerospace

noble ermine
#

Which shows they moved that data regularly (probably critical data)

dawn tundra
#

Yeah

noble ermine
#

I bet it's technical plans, at least

dawn tundra
#

I think I also have another drive that will probably fit in the server like another reader

#

But they also use stuff from the '30s like drills and whatnot machinery

#

I've been in the whole factory it's pretty cool

#

You don't make the planes anymore

#

They

noble ermine
#

Dude, old machines rock as far as industrial machinery goes

dawn tundra
#

But they make missile fins for the am5 missiles as well as the three

noble ermine
#

Nice

#

They're aerospace but not planes, cool

dawn tundra
#

Yeah my dad works in the I don't know what department it is but it's pretty cool it's air conditioned he got the only air conditioner in place on the floor with along with one other guy

noble ermine
#

I love missile design, it's so streamlined and straightforward

dawn tundra
#

Well not planes anymore

noble ermine
#

The only AC?

unborn condor
dawn tundra
#

Yeah it's a for a special machine

noble ermine
#

Ah, i see, they use it functionally, not for comfort

dawn tundra
#

I had to bend the depends on the cover of the tape drive to get the top lid open so I could look inside and it's not staying on but it should be fine I should just be able to screw it back on

noble ermine
#

Cool

#

Not a problem if it still can be attached

dawn tundra
#

The only concern I have about the tape drive is the faceplate is missing and there's no eject button

noble ermine
#

Those aren't meant for ejection

#

They're like super stable hdds

#

That's why there's a floppy drive
