And then my computer went into an infinite boot cycle

I mean, if you're constantly utilizing close to the upper limits of your available RAM, sure, yes. Operating Systems usually use a pagefile / swapfile (stored on your boot drive) when RAM runs low, which is much slower than RAM itself.

That'll do it. The minimum recommended used to be 8GB, but 16GB is becoming the new minimum these days, even for general web browsing / light office work. Operating Systems and websites use way more RAM than they used to.
