Perhaps someone can educate me. If there is a chance that some of the wires are carrying more power than they should be and melting / failing, why can't they just make the wires thicker as a precaution to be able to carry a higher ampage / load?

The issue appears to be that the FE cards don't have any way of ensuring that each cable takes an even load.

So electrons taking the path of least resistance can ramp one individual wire up to 20 amps while the others are 3 or 4 amps.
