Something similar happened to me once. Playing a game on my old rig with a 780 where my PC just suddenly shuts off. I turn it on, see sparks coming from my 780, smoke pouring out of my case and then smell the worst smell of burning electronics. Apparently the chokes around the memory blew. Thankfully the rest of the system still worked. Idk if I got lucky there as well.
