Yeah, model cars go all the way to 1:8 scale for RC’s. The biggest commercially viable trains are O gauge. Anything bigger than that like G gauge or 7.5” gauge is very niche and rare to find.

Well different people like them for different reasons. The great thing about the model train hobby is there’s something for everyone. There’s painting, building, electrical, computer programming, and of course the trains.

Nowadays there’s interfaces that connect microchips inside of the locomotives to a computer and allow you to automate and control trains from a PC with a dispatching program.

Personally I just like to watch them run, I’m not as big into building things, I’m more into the technology, collecting, and operating them.

Some trains run on analog traditional controls. The track has two or three rails depending on the system. One rail is neutral and the other one (or two rails in the case of 3 rail systems) is positive. The voltage applied to the track in the form of direct current is picked up by the metal wheels of the locomotives and flows through a copper wire wound commutator style motor. The more voltage, the faster the train goes.

In more modern systems the track is at a constant voltage and digital signals in the form of bits are sent over the rails by varying the pulses between the alternating current. Then when it reaches the locomotive it is intercepted by a micro chip inside the locomotive that interprets the signals and forwards power to the motor. On a lot of modern models there are speakers with sound commands, operating lights that can be turned on and off on demand.

Another major benefit of the digital command control system is that you can have multiple locomotives on the same track circuit all operating independently. On a direct current system, all locomotives on the same track will run at the same speed in the same direction which is quite boring and operationally limiting.

Depends on motor speed and gearing. Also aerodynamics and weight do play a small part. The fastest ones I’ve seen are models of the French TGV or Japanese Shinkansen. Typically they are very light and aerodynamic with very long gear ratios.

With a lot of models you can get them up to a decent speed if you apply enough current to the track

Apparently the fastest model train right now is the Osaka Banpaku Tenjimokei Linear Motorcar, being able to run about 28 mph

There’s a computer program called JMRI that allows you to program and control model trains by attaching a computer to the track via an Ethernet connection and a custom adapter. Pretty cool.

They are now offering a asus 5080 tuf gaming oc edition (which is 50e more), but they offer it with the same price as the msi one. Should I go for the offer or wait for the msi one?
