bleak night
#

i have a friend who runs a cv1 on a 1050 ti daily, on amd fx even

#

she has no issues

thick escarp

Very much depends on what you wanna spend and some more preferences. Most people in here would probably recommend one of two:

  1. If money is not a big issue, and you want the best experience when it comes to tracking, image, and controllers: Probably get a Valve Index. Pros: Great tracking and controllers, very good image quality. Cons: You have to install base stations in your play are and are cable-tied to your PC.

  2. If money is an issue, you want the least involved setup and like some standalone and/or cable free playing: The Oculus Quest 2 is a great value. Pros: Works standalone, portable, no cables, very good image quality. Cons: Tracking is good but not perfect. And it's Facebook, some people really hate Facebook getting their money and tracking their data.

thick escarp
# bleak night index has quite a few flaws though

I know. But I have come to learn that people who are never here, just pop in and ask the one "best VR headset" question without any additional details want exactly three things:

  1. Don't deter them from VR entirely by bashing on Facebook a ton or discussing minor details. They won't read that, otherwise they'd have watched some three popular videos on the subject. They want quick info.

  2. Don't recommend too many different things. They want one or two options.

  3. They want the "best average"... Which imo are these two...

rapid otter
#

The question rn is quest 2 or something else

#

If they want something else then explain afterward

#

But i rarely recommend headsets, i don't think I'm "qualified enough"

thick escarp
#

I just was really hit by the one guy who stopped by a few days ago, asked the simple question, and we kept bashing on about horrible data collection, and support issues, and breaking headsets, and company policies, ... And in the end, he just said "Alright then, I guess I'll not get into VR at all." and left. That is probably the worst outcome.

rapid otter
#

Lmoa yeah

thick escarp
#

I mean, you could have those discussions about any gaming PC. There's tons of data collection on Steam, and horrible experiences with breaking parts and bad support. But that's just what it is. When I built my latest PC, the motherboard and the PSU came DOA. Took me ages to figure that out and discuss with manufacturers...

rapid otter
#

Did you got refunded/new parts ?

thick escarp
#

Nope, all brand new. It does happen with motherboards, because they are quite elaborate nowadays, but the PSU really surprised me. The problem is that I don't (like LTT) have a couple of each at home so I can switch them out and see what works.

#

Oh, you mean, did they exchange it? Yes, they did. It was both obviously broken, and not by me. So I got new parts/refunds.

That's an actual photo of the motherboard I built in before this one. I was completely on Macs between then and about 18 months ago. Skipped the "Intel is on top" era entirely.

rapid otter
#

Fucking hell

#

It's not a consumer board

#

Is it ?

thick escarp
#

Oh yeah, it totally is. That's what consumer boards looked like.

rapid otter
#

That's a bad design

thick escarp

For USB and sound and network, you would need extra plugin cards.

Nothing on-board in the chipset.

rapid otter
thick escarp
#

This is what my PC "looks like". You see the cables on the bottom right? Exactly, it's in a small room next to my desk. ๐Ÿคฃ

rapid otter
#

This is an even crazier board, no holes for a cooler, guess why ?

thick escarp
#

But that board is definitely newer than mine.

rapid otter
#

It's one of the only 250 built

thick escarp
#

But it's a pretty fancy board. Mine was just cheap. I am sure there were cooler looking boards at the time, too. But yeah, since the arrival of tempered glass, motherboard looks have changed a lot.

rapid otter
#

Yep

#

I don't care about looks tbh

#

I can't afford to

This is mine

And my PSU cables are disgusting red yellow ect

So this is what it looks inside.

Had to install (and uninstall) an RGB software to turn off the one RGB thing in there (the GPU had some).

I'm 1% on userbenchmark

Not sure if it's like that in 3d mark

But still on the top part

haughty thistle

Usrebrenchkark?

#

I woke you up with that word

haughty thistle
#

Sorry, but that site is so $hitty, I wouldn't even use them to compare two cards of the same maker and generation...

#

I actually just had the time to catch up with your chat. I just saw that word and had to respond xD

rapid otter
#

I use it only to compare my 2060 to other 2060s

#

I was showing my results cz I'm low-key proud of em

thick escarp
#

To finish the impression of how much I care about looks vs. convenience... This is what my desk looks like right now. A KVM switch to toggle between my PC, my Mac mini, and my work laptop. An extra Mac keyboard just sitting there. And a monitor stand that I can quickly raise for a standing position. Looks horrible, works great. As I said, PC is in the other room, for noise.

rapid otter
#

You look serious

#

That's your son on the mug ๐Ÿ˜ ?

haughty thistle

As long as your system works for you, that's the important bit. Like maybe 5-6 years ago, I was gaming on a 750Ti, because that was all what my parents where willing to spend on my system

thick escarp
haughty thistle
rapid otter
#

Ho yeah

#

How are they ?

thick escarp
#

I don't flatscreen game at all, only VR...

#

Air up? Pretty cool, it helps me drink more water.

#

A little overpriced imo.

rapid otter
#

I do drink a lot of water it's good fro your health

#

Everyone should

thick escarp
#

But I don't change the pods for like two weeks or so... So it's not too expensive.

rapid otter
#

How much is one pod ?

thick escarp
#

The "Air Up" bottle you can plug a pod on top with different scents. So the water kinda tastes like it had some stuff in it (apple, or orange, or even coke), but it's really just water.

rapid otter
thick escarp
#

I think the pods are between 1 and 2โ‚ฌ each.

rapid otter
#

For two weeks it good actually

thick escarp
#

But if that gets me through two weeks, I'm okay with it. I think officially, they want you to change it every other day, with the amount I drink. But I think it still smells enough after 10 days...

rapid otter
#

Mine sound horrible on the fan rattle it's broken, but i don't wanna change it

haughty thistle
#

I usually mix some Sirup in with the sparkling water I get at work. Tastes like real Pepsi or 7up, yet I only have this tiny little bottle sitting at my desk at work

thick escarp
rapid otter
#

Is the room ventilated ?

#

Putting in a closet isn't ideal

#

Also you can set a zero fan curve on your gpu made my pc way quieter

thick escarp
# haughty thistle I usually mix some Sirup in with the sparkling water I get at work. Tastes like ...

Sounds awesome. But when you hit your late 20s, you'll notice that drinking anything with calories in it will totally go right to your fat deposits. ๐Ÿ˜‰ Honestly, when I was your age, I thought that caring about weight and having hurting limbs is for people who are 60 and over. I am 40 now, and if I go too crazy in Beat Saber without warming up, and I overstretch my shoulder, it will hurt for weeks. Stuff like that used to last for a day or two. Getting old sucks.

rapid otter
#

It's not age you are 40

#

I'm 16 tho i hurt my back for two weeks

#

Even if I do a lot of sport

thick escarp
# rapid otter Is the room ventilated ?

See, that's the advantage of being older. ๐Ÿ˜‰ We just built a house a few years ago. So, being tech-adjacent, I put in tech stuff wherever possible. We have a central ventilation system that will create air flow in every room. And in the summer, we can use the heat pump to actually cool the floors. This tiny room with the PC does not go over 22ยฐC. Oh yes, of course I have sensors for temperature, dust, and CO2 in there. ๐Ÿ˜‰

rapid otter
#

Damn

#

Nice

rapid otter
#

If it's a cool roll you could try a zero fan curve i can help you set it up for your gpu

thick escarp
#

Well, honestly, when you are building your own house, adding cool tech stuff everywhere will make the difference between 650k vs. 620k euros or something. In the end, this just means that you'll pay off the house for one more year, which doesn't sound as bad...

rapid otter
#

Sure but to buy a 650 k house is something we can't do so that's kind of a question of money ๐Ÿค‘

thick escarp
rapid otter
#

Ho

#

Mining that's cool

#

Doing it for fun ?

thick escarp
#

I thought about it long, because I don't want to mine and use power. But when the battery is full, sending all the leftover power to the grid will lose so much of it (like, only half will actually get to the power company) that I might as well just do some light mining with it. I mostly did it for fun, but it actually racks up some 50-100โ‚ฌ per month.

rapid otter
#

Cool

haughty thistle
#

If energy companies would pay more for injecting power into the grid, it would make much more sense to give other people access to it, then burning it yourself. But as-is, Mining might actually give you more money, depending on the efficiency of your card :/

I'm gonna leave soon gonna go to class...
Sure was a nice talk, I'll catch you later โœŒ๏ธ

thick escarp
# haughty thistle If energy companies would pay more for injecting power into the grid, it would m...

Well, we never built the PV for economic reasons, more for ecological ones. We basically don't use outside energy, with the heat pump being electric as well, so that feels good. But the "leftover energy" really doesn't make sense to all send to the grid, even for ecological reasons. At noon on a normal day, the PV will produce around 5-6kW, and the battery (20kWh) is already full. So taking around 0.25 of those 6kW to mine before sending the rest away did not feel like a bad idea...

There's a new online mod for boneworks

#

There one was before but it was very bad

#

Can't wait to download it

#

If someone wanna play with me when it comes out ?

thick escarp
#

Well, it's about time. Finally, the supermarkets here have put up Christmas decorations and shelves full of Christmas sweets. Aaaah, it's that time half of the year again.

rapid otter
rapid otter
thick escarp
#

@rapid otter Oh man, this was very tense right now. I played Boneworks for another hour before the kids get home. I just went through the dark sewers. All was good until I

  1. realized I was keeping track of the pistol bullets and ran out of ammo for the automatics because it looked like I had plenty...
  2. realized at exactly this time that I lost my pistol somewhere in the dark, didn't even know when.
So I had to chomp through a bunch of the dudes with nothing but an axe. I am now at the next save point and definitely need a break to breathe. I hit my wall only once. I should probably turn up my guardian sensitivity for this...
rapid otter
#

Nice

#

This the boneworks experience

#

I never ran out of ammo during the story mod

#

There's more than 40k ammos in all the game actually

thick escarp
#

Yeah, I got really overconfident, because I was collecting a ton in the beginning. Then didn't notice that I watched only the pistol ammo (I know, rookie mistake), which was still over 1500. So I slacked off collecting all the ammo cases, I thought I would be good forever...

#

What I like most though is that on every new "chapter", I realize that the dude in the video scenes is Mike Diva, and that the narrator is Sam (from Corridor Digital). Makes the game feel like it was made by friends...

Is there one on pc normally

( I'm rarely on discord pc)

coarse birch
#

huh yeah everything (games/apps) has push-to-talk on PC now

#

Cuz I wouldn't want to mess around in Vrchat with someone else talking to me or something lolll

rapid otter

Ok

You can't really access you app while in vr

#

I don't think you can bind a key for push to talk on discord

coarse birch

rip thanks tho

rapid otter
#

@haughty thistle do you know ?

#

He certainly knows

coarse birch
#

Nvm, I found on Vrchat's documentation that X button is for mute

haughty thistle
#

VRChat uses somewhat of a voice activation. It's basically like how it is in Discord by default. You can enable Push-To-Talk in VRC, but I'm not sure if that's desktop only, or available in VR as well...
Alternatively, as you mentioned, you can map a button on your controller to be a mic mute switch

coarse birch

#

Quick question, if I use the Quest 2 to play SteamVR exclusively, do I need to login using FB account for the initial setup?

haughty thistle
#

Yes you do. If you want to connect the Quest with SteamVR with anything but ALVR, you'll also need to be logged in with Facebook all the time you're using it. With Air Link and Quest Link not just on the Headset but PC too

#

Well... since that was a bit confusing let me unwrap that a bit...

#

Setup -> Always requires Facebook login. There's no way around that as of today.
Any Application purchased from the Oculus Store will require you to be logged in on the Quest. This does include Virtual Desktop.
Quest Link and Air Link requires you to be logged in on the Quest and on the Oculus PC software.
ALVR is a Homebrew application and will work regardless of your login status on the Quest.

Thing is, once you've set up the Quest and enabled ADB on it, you can remove the Facebook login on the Quest, but it will turn off Quest and Air Link, as well as prevent you from running any Applications downloaded from the Oculus Store.
Hope this is helpful to your @chilly imp ^^

chilly imp
#

Thank you so much for the info, so in the end, FB account is still mandatory regardless

#

The Vive Wireless is so frustrating that I'm looking to buy a Quest 2 and play PCVR on it

haughty thistle
#

Have you put a fan on your Wireless Adapter? I, besides many others on the internet, have found that the Vive Wireless Adapter often likes to overheat. So even a small weak fan can help a lot and actually for me has solved almost all problems with it. It only goes to a black screen very rarely when I'm standing around for too long not moving in Beat Saber

chilly imp
#

From the log, this seems to be the problem

#

It is quite random unfortunately, it can be stable for days with 5+ hours of play time but can disconnect every few minutes like today

haughty thistle
#

Maybe contact HTC. This looks like either one of the antennas is having an unstable connection

#

Or you have wifi pollution in the 60GHz range (I doubt that though, unless you happen to have an 802.11ad router)

chilly imp
haughty thistle
#

Hmm...

#

Sounds weird

#

I've heard HTC support not being the best, but they usually respond within 1-2 buisiness days...

chilly imp
#

They responded back from my first email, asking to send them a log. Then nothing else after that

haughty thistle
#

Yeah, HTC is kinda low on staff, so you're probably in a queue or something. Maybe send them another E-Mail and ask for an update

chilly imp
#

As for WiFi router, I have one in the room (AmpliFi HD)

#

The vive wireless signal mostly stays at 5/5 or 4/5 bar

haughty thistle
#

That ain't a 60GHz router...

chilly imp
#

Yes I know, just want to mention it

haughty thistle
#

Yeah, I was only mentioning it, as an 802.11ad (or 60GHz) router could potentially mess with the Vive Wireless Adapter, but chances are low that one might even have one...
Are you using any sort of extension cable on the base antenna?

chilly imp
#

No, straight to the PCIe card

haughty thistle
#

Weird...

#

You have an AMD or Intel System?

chilly imp
#

I am using AMD, R9 5950x

haughty thistle
#

Then it might be a Motherboard or PCIe Gen thing... Or maybe something totally different xD
I have made sure that the PCIe slot in which my Wireless Adapter card is installed in, is set to PCIe Gen 3. And like I said, other then the black screen issue, no other issues so far...

chilly imp
#

Tried with B550 and X570 board, same issue, also with swapping around different PCIe Gen 3 slot with no luck.

#

Sometime it would completely shut down and turn black, or grey screen, or randomly disconnect all controllers and trackers

chilly imp
#

Same vendor from ASUS. B550F and X570-F

haughty thistle
chilly imp
#

So because all of that, might get the Quest 2 and sell the Wireless Adapter

haughty thistle
#

What BIOS version are you on? latest?

chilly imp
#

Yes, everything is up to date

#

reinstall Windows, disable DOCP/OC setting, nothing seems to change

haughty thistle
chilly imp
#

Disable DOCP actually make it a lot worse

haughty thistle
#

That's sooo weird?

chilly imp
#

maybe I'm one of those extreme case

#

Do you have experience playing PCVR wirelessly on the Quest 2? If so, what would be the best software to use in term of latency/image quality

haughty thistle
#

I don't have a Quest 2 (as I'd never create a Facebook account), but I do have a Quest 1 with an old legacy Oculus Account. Because it's a Quest 1, I hadn't had the chance to try out Air Link sadly. From what I've heard, Virtual Desktop (20$ on the Quest Store) was however a noticably better experience then ALVR for me. Whereas I had to crank down the quality all the way to 10Mbit/s for it to even play at playable framerates on ALVR, VD works flawless at 100Mbit/s. I think on the Quest 2 with Wifi 6 you can push it all the way to 125 or 150Mbit/s, but I'm not too sure... (Quest Link on the Q1 is limited to 150MBit/s and 500MBit/s on the Q2, tho more then 250MBit/s is not advisable due to stability issues)
One thing to keep in mind is, just like with the Vive Pro 2 + WA, neither the Quest 1 nor the Quest 2 will run at native res in PCVR mode. VD looks slightly more compressed to my eyes then then Quest Link, but it's only a fine difference. Comparing the Quest 1 with the Vive Pro 1 however, the Vive Pro wins hands down. This is because the Vive WA can run at a resolution slightly above native res of the Pro 1, and the Quest 1 runs at a resolution more akin to the Rift CV1.
I was always under the impression that the Quest 2 had a higher PCVR resolution then the Quest 1 (and this might still be true), but I have compared the "native" render res (setting render scale in both Oculus and Steam to 1x/100%) of my Quest 1 in PCVR mode, with the "native" render res of the Quest 2 from @rapid otter, and we found that both were exactly the same. So it might just be that the Quest 2 just has less compression artifacts...

chilly imp
#

Thank you, that great to know. I had some pretty good experience with the Q1 + VD before I upgrade to Vive Pro

thick escarp
# chilly imp Do you have experience playing PCVR wirelessly on the Quest 2? If so, what would...

The software will probably have less of an impact than the quality of your wireless router and house network, as well as how many devices are connected to your router at the time. I have tried Airlink and Virtual Desktop, both with a Quest 2. They both work fine and I couldn't tell a huge difference. With Virtual Desktop, you will be able to fine tune the settings a bit more, so you may be able to run it on less optimal networks, and you might be able to squeeze some more performance out of it. Airlink is more of a plug&play option.

chilly imp
#

The latency was about 30-40ms iirc, but that without using WiFi6

thick escarp
#

Bonus: The streaming and starting of games has nothing to do with Facebook software. ๐Ÿ˜‰

haughty thistle
chilly imp
#

So back to Oculus for now I guess, can't wait for the next Valve headset

thick escarp
chilly imp
#

Well, FB is the only thing I don't like about the Quest, but if flawless wireless PCVR can be achieved, there is no other option isn't it.

haughty thistle
#

I'm just always mentioning the "not native res" part, as for me, the blurry-ness that comes with the lower-then-native render resolution always reminds me of when I'm not wearing my glasses and it kinda grinds my gears. I know everyone has a different opinion on that, so I'll usually leave it at that

chilly imp
#

Will increase SS in SteamVR help somewhat?

haughty thistle
#

The resolution that is sent to the headset is limited to a fixed resolution (due to limitations of the SOC). So increasing SS in SteamVR probably only helps with AA, but not really with the blurry-ness.

chilly imp
#

That a tradeoff of wireless VR, but I willing to take it and not to worry about random disconnection

rapid otter
#

Actually once it's set up it's very stable

#

I rarely get disconnected

#

If you have anything to ask @me i always play in wireless

chilly imp
#

On the topic of Quest, is there any accessories that you recommend? Planning to buy from AmazonUS since the shipping is quite fast to NZ

#

and a WiFi6 router if possible, I don't need anything fancy. Probably only 3 devices will be connect using WiFi, other than the Quest 2

rapid otter
#

I have an ax55 from asus

Really good overall

Got it for 85 bucks actually

You need a good speed 800 mbs minimum i think

It's not like 60GHz which get's blocked by your head, duh

#

I might ask my gf to go

thick escarp
# sick lagoon do you mean google earth vr

I would not recommend running this natively on the Quest. Anything you get there will not look the way you want it to, just because of the storage restrictions. Google Earth VR works nicely if you have a gaming PC you can stream from. There is a version on the Oculus store, but it doesn't work well with the Quest, definitely get the Steam one and save you some hassle.

coarse birch
#

@thick escarp Hey sorry to bother. Is there a performance difference between standalone and virtualdesktop mode for Quest 2?

#

For example, would it be better to run Beat Saber on Standalone or Virtualdesktop mode?

thick escarp
coarse birch
#

Alright, good to know, because Beat Saber might be one of the only games that I'd like to play when I'm not at home with my PC

#

So I might just put Beat Saber on standalone and the rest on PCVR

thick escarp
thick escarp
coarse birch
thick escarp

And there's a few exclusive titles that are worth it for me.

thick escarp
coarse birch
#

I mean I know I want it, I'll get it one day that is for sure. I've actually been wanting a VR for a longgg time now. Like I seriously know that one day I'll have one, so why wait. I don't have rent to pay, or electricity, or whatever actually. All I pay is my phone and I'm lucky enough to work for a telecoms company so my phone plan costs 12$ tax-in per month.

#

I guess I just have a "why wait if it can be done right now" feeling

thick escarp
#

Understandable. Middle ground is usually a good idea. So maybe offer her that you'll really think about it for another two days so you can be sure. Feels like she'll have to agree on that, since you came one step towards her. ๐Ÿ˜‰

thick escarp
# coarse birch Can you mod Beat Saber on Quest 2 btw? (not in PCVR mode I mean) <@4797486867847...

Yes, BMBF works fine and has done so for me for almost 2 years. I have never heard of anybody having their account banned because of a modded Beat Saber, and a quick google search tells me that this is not really a thing. Yes, Facebook can and will ban some accounts, but you are at much higher risk if you use incorrect information or inappropriate posts or something... BMBF works great, and you should absolutely and totally mod Beat Saber.

Nice, I'll try it out then! I officially have my Quest 2 by the way! @thick escarp Only two things are: I feel like it will easily give me some sinuses headache because of the pressure, and also it's a bit blurry still (with any of the 3 presets)

I'll try it out with my glasses tomorrow to see if it helps

thick escarp
# coarse birch I'll try it out with my glasses tomorrow to see if it helps

With the glasses, definitely use the spacer so you don't scratch your lenses. For the interpupillary distance, try to actually measure it and pick the closest setting.

Most importantly, for sharp images and comfortable fit, the Quest will have to be in the right vertical spot. Try moving it up and down. Also: Shorten your top headstrap enough. Most of the weight should be on there, not the "around the head" strap clamping the Quest to your face against gravity. I made that error for quite a while. ๐Ÿ˜‰

coarse birch

And yeah I think the straps are okay but I'll readjust them tomorrow. I put the silicone cover and I get red kinda marks in my face after having the headset on for a little while

Hehe. Man, you'll get to know "early" when you have kids. ๐Ÿคฃ Mine are already in school/kindergarden. They usually wake up between 5:30 and 6am, so I aim for 5am myself to get some eMail done and have a cup of coffee before they occupy me...

thick escarp
rapid otter

Damn

Starts at 8 or 9 depends on your ,can i say agenda ?

thick escarp
# rapid otter 5 am ? Aren't you tired !

It's all way better since my kids don't wake up too often during the night anymore. ๐Ÿ˜‰ Last spring's lockdown was rough. My wife and me both work full time, so with having to take care of the kids all day, I worked 3am-8am and then 6pm to 10pm. No fun, and no time for VR left.

rapid otter
#

Time table i got it

thick escarp

No, not at all. I just can work whenever I want to, and my wife had to be in lots of meetings during normal work hours. So I had to take care of kids during normal daytime, and work early mornings and late evenings. ๐Ÿ˜ฆ

thick escarp
# rapid otter Personally i don't like finishing games fast

Me neither. The problem is that VR is so immersive and I am not used to being in a video game in the first place. So I am incredibly invested, really scared of dying, and will keep at it like a madman. Thank god for battery packs. ๐Ÿ˜… I will then usually play the game again and take much, much longer, enjoying everything since I kinda know it ends well. ๐Ÿ˜

You are lucky to be very immersed

# tawdry dove Msrp

Yeah nah I'm definitely not paying close to MSRP that's hella bread lol, looking at something open box/used, new is fine too if the price is right, ideally <$400 is what I was thinking but idk if that's too low/high

#

Also actually, does anyone know if multiple Reverb G2's next to each other will have tracking issues with the controllers? Seems like the controllers rely on light tracking and they look the same so ๐Ÿคท

rapid otter
#

It uses acceleratometers and tilt sensors

haughty thistle
#

WMR encodes some data in the controller tracking LEDs and can thus find just the controllers that are paired to the headset/PC.
TL;DR: Yes you can use multiple G2s in one room

rapid otter
#

Or however it's called

haughty thistle
#

Same applies to the Quest/Quest 2 and Rift S. Afaik the only headset you have to be careful using multiple of in the same room is the Rift CV1 and Rift DK2

glad sand
haughty thistle
#

Never heard of that with the Vive. The Lighthouse system is designed from the ground up as an arcade-compatible system. Each lighthouse tracked devices is tracking completely on it's own and only needs to receive the IR pulses from the lighthouses (which also passively work on their own)

#

The only downsides I see with the G2 are the limited tracking area (it can't see the controllers down by your hip for example) and the lack of touch sensitivity on the controller buttons. Both only really affecting social VR titles

#

For an arcade or business, it might be of note that the back foam of the G2 is not removable, only the facial interface (which is attached using magnets)

Asgard's Wrath...
I just played some Asgard's Wrath, and can very much recommend it if you find it on sale somewhere. In the beginning, it is a lot of watching and not enough doing for my taste. thick escarp
# rapid otter Why do you have so much cables ?

The floors in my house are separated by huge concrete ceilings. So I need 1-2 wifi routers on every floor. And I have a lot of house tech connected to the network, so I added another router per floor for guests. So I needed a decent firewall to put the guest IPs in a separate VLAN and manage the access. And then there's a NAS and some Pi servers, and central ventilation, and the heat pump, ... All with access to the Home Server... It just added up over the years.

#

That's why I'm mad that Linus is only now doing the research on what is ideal. I could have used that 5 years ago...

The only two benefits of the Q1 over the Q2 that I can see are that the Q1 has proper physical IPD adjustment (and not just some wanna be 3 options thing) and the fact that the Q1 is using OLED. Maybe if you play a lot of Beat Saber, I can see the rubberised material on the controllers as beneficial?
But yeah, the Q2 is pretty much better in every other way.

Thing is, the only reason I'm keeping my Q1 and no one can separate me from it, is because the Q2 requires a Facebook login, which the Q1 did not.

thick escarp
haughty thistle
#

Facebook can't lock out existing customers out of their purchases, just because the customer decided not to switch to a different account system. Either they have to refund me the price of the Q1 and all game purchases done for it or they have to continue allowing legacy accounts to login and play all their games and use the hardware to it's fullest extent, albeit with any Online feature turned off and being excluded from Multiplayer.
My guess is that the second case is going to happen

#

If they stop allowing login with legacy accounts altogether, you can be certain I'm going to court and trying to get my money back...

Running VR games on Quest 2 from SteamVR, thoughts? I've seen a dude comment on Reddit saying SteamVR with Quest 2 and VirtualDesktop has some kind of weird delay that makes some games behave weird (Blade & Sorcery to be precise)

I havent had any problem so far, it's just that one weird guy that said SteamVR causes a delay

#

But when I have an option to start a game on Steam from SteamVR or in regular VR mode, which one should I take?

thick escarp
#

If you use Virtual Desktop, just start the game from there. Press the menu button, click on Games and pick it. That will take care of starting SteamVR and mapping the controllers and everything. You can't really run a VR game from Steam without SteamVR, so I don't know what magic they are doing in the background.

thick escarp
coarse birch
thick escarp
#

Hm, that's weird. I think I found all of mine. Are those special combinations, like non-VR games with mods?

coarse birch
#

Nope they're all from Steam

thick escarp
#

In any case: Running a VR game will launch SteamVR. I don't think it makes a difference if you start it from in there already or if the game starts SteamVR for you in the background.

coarse birch
#

At least that was yesterday, maybe they didnt finish installing and I just didnt notice

#

I'll see if all of my games are there later

I tried it out yesterday and it seems like a super cool game

Is that on Quest or Steam? I think modding it is easy in both cases, just follow a tutorial. Pick a new one though, quite a few things have changed with the newest versions.

coarse birch

Steam

#

Yeah my friend talked about Nexus? I have no idea what that is but I'll check it out

#

It's a mod manager to easily download and manage your mods for a number of games. Yes, works pretty smoothly, can recommend. ๐Ÿ™‚

rapid otter
thick escarp
#

Well, SteamVR you can definitely just start from the Virtual Desktop menu, no need for a shortcut. But some games need to be started externally when script mods are added. E.g. Skyrim VR with the script extension mod will have to run some scripts before starting SteamVR and the game, so that needs a shortcut on the Desktop for simplicity.

I think it's steam vr reprojection now and it's way better

#

It was annoying it always kicked in and made everything look bad

#

And my gpu was under used

#

@haughty thistle

haughty thistle
#

Yeah. SteamVR reprojection basically takes the last frame and projects it into the 3D virtual space, so head movement is still accounted for. I personally prefer it over any sort of motion smoothing (as that always causes weird distortions)
I'm glad you can toggle permanently between those two on pretty much all headsets. The only company that forces motion smoothing on your is Oculus. The Rift Software has a toggle for ASW (their name for motion smoothing) in their debug tool, but it only adjusts the settings for the current session. Restart Oculus and the setting is turned back to normal...

I'd recommend building some support for the hinge. It's not strong enough to keep the HMD parallel to your face (it usually sits on there at an angle, resulting in a blurry picture towards the bottom). It will make the headset harder to put on, but it will improve picture quality.

Theoretically, up to 16 2.0 lighthouses per playspace. But practically speaking, your devices will only pick up a maximum of 4 at a time. So using more then 4 lighthouses becomes kind of pointless as it only really has an application in multi-room arcade environments...

Neat. Debating between an Index for $800 or an Index with an extra base station for $900

The extra lighthouses (2 vs 4) only have a noticeable difference for things like Fullbody tracking and maybe if your playspace/room are weirdly shaped. Lighthouse tracking already is as accurate as it can be with just one lighthouse. With 2 lighthouses you already have roomscale tracking. A 3rd and 4th lighthouse then only helps with occlusion or really large playspaces hth

Honestly, to me, it just always looked like Oculus is running Continuous Integration software development. So whatever they are currently working on, we can already see in the code, only that it's switched off. It can be months or even years down the line until this is ripe for an actual release.

I have the feeling that Quest development is a bit over hyped right now. A good example is how everyone jumped on the "working on the next headset" comment Zuckerberg gave somewhere. All channels proclaimed that a Quest 3/Pro is around the corner. I just thought: well, yeah, I mean, what else would the thousands of employees work on other than "the next headset"??? This comment really just means that the Quest was so successful that they keep working in this direction, big surprise! ๐Ÿ˜‰

I don't think the 1060 is gonna give you significantly more performance than a 570. That's not worth dropping money on.

#

I mean, I ran VR on a GTX 1660 (no super), and it worked fine. Apparently, you can expect 25% fewer frames on a 570, which still sounds acceptable to me. If you can't go the Linux route (which I understand, especially if it's your GFs PC and she doesn't wanna dual boot all the time), I would say: Get the 570 for free and wait. It will work for now.

The cheapest way you can go, while still buying new, is to get a Quest 2 with like a 5-6m USB 3.0 cable. Alternatively you can try using your router at home with a software called Virtual Desktop, or get a dedicated router for that to play SteamVR titles. Either way, you probably also want to get a replacement headstrap if you intend on playing longer sessions.
On the used market you can find headsets like the Lenovo Explorer of the original Vive for a similar price or less and it will probably give you a better PCVR experience, just be aware that you wont have any warrenty and unlike the Quest, these require a PC to work in the first place. On the upside, you are not required to log into Facebook (which you will be with any of the Facebook/Oculus headsets)

gusty frost

You have Air Link too

haughty thistle
# rough talon cuz if you gunna save and splurge so why not

If that's the case, the Valve Index is still the best all in one box option, but if you're willing to mix and match hardware, you may be able to get a better experience that way. I for example am mostly using a Vive Pro 1 with Index controllers. Imo a much better headset then the Index, if you're willing to look over the fact that you have to wear your own headphones and mic on it...

In the app, you have to specifically search for "Pavlov: Shack Beta" and then scroll all the way down. It will say that it found one App in the "App Lab" that might not be as smooth an experience, if you want to see that as well. You say yes and can install it.

thick escarp
#

Oh, @rapid otter, you were curious: I just tried the haptics vest for a good two hours. It's different than I expected, but pretty cool. I have not tried the audio-to-haptics yet, mostly natively supported apps on the Quest 2 and modded PCVR game via Virtual Desktop.

The installation of mods is... just like any mod installation. Some work smoothly via Vortex, others need manual zip extraction into specific folders, extra options in the Steam launcher, and scripts to be executed, but it's no big deal. The native support however, and the connection of the vest to PC, phone, and Quest 2 is about as smooth as it can be. No troubles at all there.

Overall, the feeling of getting shot is slightly underwhelming, because it's just not a shot, it's a vibration. It's nice that you can tell where you have been shot from, but that's really more of a cool advantage than pulling you more into the game. What was way better than I expected was everything else:

#

Half Life Alyx (via mod)
You can feel the gun recoil in your shoulder, especially the shotgun. You can feel mags sliding down and up your backback, healing will give you a nice rumble through the entire body, explosions will make you shake, and most importantly: When you are low on health, you can feel your heart beating and starting to pick up pace. Man, that gives even more tension to the situation, I found my own heart racing along with Alyx', that was a real trip. This is a very immersive game to begin with, and this really sent it through the roof. I don't know if I will dare to load the Jeff chapter...

Skyrim VR (via mod)
When you "shout", you can feel the buildup in your belly and exit through your chest. You can feel sword slashes and drop damage from a cliff. I searched for a dragon but did not find one quickly, that was a shame, it might be an even cooler experience.

[...continued...]

Fallout 4 VR (via mod)
I only started this game, never played it, I'm not sure if it's my cup of tea yet. But the haptics feel very similar to Skyrim so far.

Boneworks (via mod)
Works pretty well. I like that you can hit yourself on the body with stuff and you'll feel it. Climbing sensations are pretty cool. Recoil when shooting and also hitting boxes. Heartbeat as well. I think if this is an immersive game for you, it will feel similar to Half Life Alyx, but I can't really get deep into the game.

glad sand
#

Oh and OLED so that's cool but again, trade-off

thick escarp
#

In Death Unchained (native)
It's... good. You can feel your heartbeat, you feel your chest shiver if you pull arrows really hard. If you are hit, you will feel the arrow enter and exit (!) your body. You feel slashes. Coolest thing were the rumbles when you blocked bigger knights with your shield.

Synth Riders (native)
Yeah. This is not necessary. It just rumbles a bit.

haughty thistle
#

Imo OLED is superior to LCD in all but burn-in, which isn't really a concern in VR.
Besides that, the Vive Pro 1 is way better balanced, making it much more comfortable for longer sessions

thick escarp
#

Will try some more games, and some sound-to-haptics profiles. But so far, this has been pretty cool. About as effective as getting an amazing graphics card or headset for better immersion, and a similar price. So it's not necessary at all, but pretty fun.

haughty thistle
#

VP1 and Index have exactly the same resolution. One thing that the VP1 has, which the Index doesn't is the ability to go wireless with the oh so expensive Vive Wireless Adapter. Imo the best way to play VR wireless

#

Besides, if cable, OLED and long session comfort isn't that important to you, the Vive Pro 2 offeres a wider FOV then the Index (at the cost of a little bit of HFOV, not too noticable imo) and a higher resolution. Plus it's screen calibration looks much more refined then the washed out image the Index produces...

#

I'm not saying HTC is doing everything right here though. Heat is a genuine concern with the Pro 2, and the fact that they are still using the same, pop-filter-less mic as with the original Vive is more then an insult at this point. I can understand why they continue to hold onto the Wands (cause businesses like their legacy software), but not even reducing the prise on those? Like come on, the Index controllers are cheaper and better then your wands...

The quest 2 is underclocked from factory because of the lack of cooling

tawdry dove

thick escarp

I mean, it might be fun to try. But honestly, the fan spinning up and taking me out of the immersive VR game is not worth the 2 more fps you get imo...

tawdry dove
#

Maybe it'll make it more immersive

#

I turn up resolution frequently but I find even at normal res some beatsaber maps still lag from sheer notes and copius amounts of walls

rapid otter
#

But i think that at peak load the voltage is stable let's say 1v 25 w since you certainly can't change it , if your chip runs cooler it will use less power and be more efficient, so i think there's a 1% maybe to get with a better cooling

#

Take the cover and uga duga a cooling with an heatsink+ thermal pads

I know that snapdragons 8xx series (base architecture of the xr2 as far as i know) can be overclocked if the phone is rooted but i don't think you will be able to do so on the quest 2

Honestly, I feel like the Quest Pro is going in the wrong direction for me personally. The way it looks, it will focus on face and eye tracking, on color passthrough, on detecting people entering your playspace. I need none of that, I particularly dislike Facebook tracking my eyes and face in addition to movement. I would rather have the OLED panels back, and some better audio or non-lagging bluetooth for headphones etc.

rapid otter

Nah eye tracking is could be good but not on a quest 3 but on the pro yes, color pass thru why not ? And yes oled was good ...

rapid otter
#

I lack this apparently looking at Boneworks logs

I mean if anyone knows ?
Help would be appreciated

thick escarp
# rapid otter With beat saber it could be very cool

Yeah... I tried that one yesterday evening. It's fun because it rumbles your belly with bass and will shake some with the song rhythm. But it doesn't really add "immersion" and you are wearing a heavy vest on your upper body, so I didn't think the experience was any better than without. So far, the most surprising effects were really the additional immersion in good story-driven games, not the fun gimmicks in wave shooters or rhythm games. Just like with Synth Riders (which is supported natively).

rapid otter
#

But i think a vest rn isn't the best

#

If it existed

#

A strap that you would put around your torso would be perfect with 4-5 motors would be way better

#

I think it would be lighter and cheaper too

thick escarp
#

Probably, yes. I just noticed that there is an official Mod for the PCVR version of Beat Saber, not just audio-to-haptics. That might work better. But again, it's not that much of an additional value to me in rhythm games. I mean, it's cool to feel the bass, and I'll gladly take it as an extra feature. The experience is just not worth spending money on, I think.

rapid otter
#

The mod is paid ?

thick escarp
#

No, but I only own Beat Saber for the Quest natively. So I would have to buy Beat Saber for PC in addition. ๐Ÿ˜‰ But what I meant is: You probably shouldn't buy haptic feedback gear for rhythm games, the additional experience is nice but no break-through. It's awesome for immersion in story or physics based games, if you are into that, then haptics is "more worth it", still expensive, but yeah...

rapid otter
#

If you get in BW any time

#

You should try to run elbow side into a wall

#

With haptics you can fell it bump

#

So cool

haughty thistle
#

I think the biggest consumer application of haptic vests for consumer use are for more immersion in games like HLA and VRC...

rapid otter
#

๐Ÿค˜ ๐Ÿค˜ ๐Ÿค˜

thick escarp
#

The audio-to-haptics profiles also work surprisingly well. I just played some Asgard's Wrath, which obviously doesn't get support because mods for Oculus are rarely a thing, and the Oculus PCVR development is dead. But mapping the bassy rumbles to vibrate in your back and front belly and the frequency of sword slashes to your chest works like a charm. I even added some screeching/wind noises to give a mild tingle to the upper back. It's certainly not perfect, but I actually don't wanna play the game without the vest anymore.

haughty thistle
#

Heh... Reminds me somewhat of how the Skullcandy Crushers work. They are a pair of headphones using linear actuators to "enhance bass". Makes actually sense if you think about it. Especially the very low frequencies we feel more rather then hearing them

thick escarp
#

Yeah. Ages ago, I played drums in a jazz band, and on one stage, they had a "rumbler" installed on the pedestal where the drummer's chair was placed. Then they just pitched down the bass guitar signal so the drummer could "feel" the bass as vibrations and be better in sync. That was kinda cool...

sullen flicker

Righto, will do

#

Do you think it would be worth upgrading to the Index? The resolution is lower

#

I don't think I'm going to buy it since it's pretty expensive but I'm curious about it

thick escarp
#

I thought about the same thing. But you can't really expect that huge a jump in quality. The tracking is only minimally better, but you can only play in one spot with the lighthouses, and the compression artefacts won't be there. I don't think you'll notice a difference in resolution. You will however lose the wireless option, which for me is pretty awesome. And you might spend like 50 euros on a Wifi 6 router specifically for your Quest 2, which will significantly reduce the wireless streaming artefacts, that's money much better spent.

#

The one reason for me I am even considering an Index is Facebook. But that's everybody's decision to make. I don't think it's worth a grand for me, since this is the only way they collect my data, and I am fairly transparent online anyways (I am old).

sullen flicker
#

Righto, that makes sense

thick escarp
#

Consider this: I just spent almost 600 euros for a bhaptics tactsuit for better immersion. Which means that I could probably afford the Index set. But I still would rather go this route... That's my opinion in a pinch.

sullen flicker
#

Yeah, that makes sense

#

I need to buy a proper strap for my quest too

thick escarp

Oh yes. I also loved some cheap 20โ‚ฌ earplugs. But that's a matter of taste, it just drowns out the surroundings more, that might a good or a bad thing.

thick escarp
#

Has anyone here ever captured video on the Quest 2, and knows a few cool tricks? There are mostly two problems I have:

  1. The standard resolution does not make sense. It's not horribly low res, but it has a square aspect ratio, which sucks for video editing in 16:9 afterwards and for vertical phone display, I have no idea what they were thinking. There are ADB commands with which you can change the resolution and ratio to whatever you want, I know. But is there an easy way that will either make the Quest remember them instead of losing the setting at every reboot, or doing this in-headset with a SideQuest app or something?

  2. The audio is drifting. I think this is most likely because the audio sample rate is fixed while the frame rate is variable and adjusts to whatever amount of frames the headset is currently pushing (well, it looks more like exactly every third frame or something), and the background recording on an underclocked XR2 chip can't handle the stream muxing properly. Does anybody know if there is an easy way to prevent this problem in the first place? I know how to fix it in post, but this can't be how all the VR content creators do it all the time???

๐Ÿค˜

#

Yeah

haughty thistle
# thick escarp Has anyone here ever captured video on the Quest 2, and knows a few cool tricks?...

Afaik the Quest just captures whatever is rendered for one eye to reduce the load. As the rendered image is roughly square, it just takes that, scales it down to a res that it can easily encode and save that. All for performance reasons.
Even PCs aren't immune to this. Unless the game has specific support for a third camera for the desktop mirror (like BeatSaber), there's a good chance it's just a cropped version of what one of your eyes sees. For my streams I usually just take the output of each eye from SteamVR, crop them and merge them to increase the seen FOV on stream. It does mean there's like a section where things often don't line up (due to the different perspectives), but it's not too noticable...

thick escarp
#

Oh man. That was utterly epic!

I just fought my first god vs. god end battle in Asgard's Wrath (there are like 3 of those overall, I think). And I only just had installed the audio-to-haptics profile for my haptics vest for this game. So I was rumbling all over my body from explosions and felt the huge leg stomps in my belly. That is a great scene as it is, and one of the very best examples of what a haptics suit helps improve. I am shook.

#

What software would you use gloves or a vest with?

#

Are there games that are compatible with them?

thick escarp
# flat pawn What software would you use gloves or a vest with?

It depends on the gear. Mine is from "bhaptics". There is native support by several PCVR games (often via a mod) and quite a few Quest games. You can connect the vest via Bluetooth (a dongle for PC is included if you don't have a Bluetooth motherboard), and the mod or game itself will just send the information to the vest/gloves, where to vibrate...

If the game is not supported, or for music, flat screen games, and movies, you can connect an audio cable to the vest (split off from your headphones), and load an audio-to-haptics profile. Those are fairly simple, usually "slash frequency -> vibrate chest", "gunshot frequency -> right shoulder", "explosion frequency -> rumble all over". But it works okay.

flat pawn
#

That's wild

And slightly scary

#

@haughty thistle did you ever pair vive trackers to your pimax?

thick escarp
#

I just asked in a YouTube comment, when I realized that this channel here is probably gonna be much more knowledgeable, let alone friendly. Duh.

In the Steam version of Beat Saber, is it possible to have custom songs and multiplayer at the same time? Because that would be worth purchasing it a second time for me. On the Quest standalone version, multiplayer is disabled as soon as you mod it for custom songs. ๐Ÿ˜ฉ

flat pawn
#

Never actually tried out multiplayer

#

Each player would obviously need the same custom song downloaded for it to work

#

Assuming it does support custom songs

#

If any platform allows it though it'll be steam over oculus

#

Multiplayer custom content exists in other games it just forces you to download necessary maps/etc upon joining a game

thick escarp
#

I don't need to play custom songs with others, that would just be the cherry on top. I would be happy trying the stock songs in multiplayer! But I won't get rid of my custom songs mod, so all multiplayer is blocked.

haughty thistle
flat pawn
#

@thick escarp getting rid of the custom songs mod won't get rid of your library

flat pawn
#

I think that's how my controllers work?

#

So I was wondering if vive trackers could be paired too

#

Unless I am misunderstanding how this all works

haughty thistle
# flat pawn The pimax hmd can have devices paired to it

Yes, how so? I've had my Index controller paired to it, as the Vive tracker all come with little nubbins to connect to. Unlike the Vive Tracker dongles and the 2 dongles build into each lighthouse tracked Vive and the Index, the ones on the Pimax are locked down and can only get set into pairing mode by PiTool. They are also only active while PiTool is running, whereas I could use my Index as a connection point for my Index controllers while using my Reverb G2 (which has none of these dongles)

Vive Trackers come with dedicated USB receivers

I'd guess pairing Vive Trackers to the Pimax should work like pairing your controllers. Just be aware that only 2 devices can be paired to a Pimax at a time.
Now that I think about it, a friend of mine actually has two of their trackers paired to their Artisan, as the Index controllers were kinda juttering around when paired to their Pimax...

#

I got my pitool to show 2 controllers and 3 trackers lit up

#

But I needed to have all 3 dongles plugged into the PC

#

I thought maybe I'd be saving USB ports

#

At least it's just generic USB C

haughty thistle
#

Nope. Each dongle only supports one device at a time. The headset just happens to have 2 dongles built in. If you really wanna have one dongle and everything connected to it, you'd want one of those Tundra SW-Dongles (or Dongle McDongleface as their internal name is). I've ordered an SW-5 dongle with my set of Tundra Trackers, so I can not just pair my Trackers but also my controllers to it.

flat pawn
#

Nice

#

Maybe at some point I'll get a sw

#

I have enough USB ports for this so I should be fine for now

haughty thistle
#

Btw. The information which device is paired to which dongle is saved on the device itself. This means you can have for example have a pair of Index controllers and a pair of Vive wands paired to a headset, and when you turn off the one pair and then turn on the other pair, they'll connect anyways. The device however can't remember multiple dongles, so if you switch between multiple headsets (which I kinda do), you'd have to pair them again after switching the headset

#

Can't wait for my Tundra Trackers, more because of the dongle really xD

flat pawn
#

Think they'll be publicly available for purchase this year?

haughty thistle
#

Depends on how quickly they get through Kickstarter fulfilment...

flat pawn
#

There was an update on their page recently

#

It didn't seem like things were moving quickly which is why I decided to just pick up some 3.0s

haughty thistle
#

Most backers already have gotten their "virtual basket" to pay for shipping as well as giving their adress, but apparently there were issues with the European baskets, so I'll be (hopefully) getting mine tomorrow ๐Ÿคž

flat pawn
#

Baskets?

haughty thistle
#

Basically, the prices that were in the Kickstarters were without taxes and shipping (as they didn't had an estimate back then), and once they had the estimate, half way through the campain, they offered every backer a stay or leave with the estimate

flat pawn
#

Geez kickstarters are messy

haughty thistle
#

They are basically providing a webstore with a shopping cart and a discount on what was payed during the Kickstarter by the backer. European backings are fulfilled by UnboundVR (thankfully a European company, not like with Pimax), and they had some technical difficulties getting the mails out, so those were a bit delayed...

#

At least Tundra is trying to keep costs low for everyone. I wouldn't wanna pay 50$ international shipping, just because they also offer to ship all the way to South Africa or something...

Hello all,
My current of is an i7 3770 with a GTX1060 6Gb
I would like to have a VR system (mainly for Elite dangerous) and I was wondering if my PC could handle a VR headset (tethered).
Also I think the Rift S since he is discon could be a good price / performance if found on the second hand market.
What do you think ?

thick escarp
# wooden ember not stupid indeed but the problem is how easily can you reset an oculus quest 2 ...

My colleague did that. You can easily reset it and remove all your data from the headset. You will however still have an Oculus account afterwards linked to Facebook. He kept is, and Facebook probably kept some of the data he provided. But in theory, with the GDPR active in Europe, all companies that have data here (which Facebook does) will have to provide the users an option to delete everything they have on them. So I think you should be okay if you want that. But that second part I only theorize about, I have not deleted my Oculus account and probably won't ever. ๐Ÿ˜‰

#

I think more than a decent PC to play some PCVR games with the Oculus Quest 2, I would recommend a good wireless router, ideally Wifi 6 with not too many other clients connected to it. I mean, a good GPU helps to get better quality, so I'm not saying it's not important. I just think that if you connection is really laggy, the experience will be much worse. If the VR world lags behind your movements, gaming is no fun and you get sick more easily.

wooden ember
thick escarp
# wooden ember what kind of VR headset should I think about ? Valve index ? Oculus Rift S ? Ocu...

So, generally: Definitely not the Rift. It's worse than all other headsets in almost all ways, and Oculus basically cancelled their PCVR branch. If you don't have a problem selling your soul to Facebook (this sounds harsh, I totally did that, for context, currently sporting a Quest 2), then the Quest 2 is a great offer. But beware that in about a month, there will be a big showcase where Oculus will most likely present some new hardware. This might be a more expensive Quest Pro, or a new model of the Quest 2 (which I don't think), but in any case, there might be something new and cool there, or the Quest 2 will get a small update without costing more, or the Quest 2 might go down in price a little. If you can wait one month, I think that's worth it.

#

The Index is very cool, but if your PC is not a beast but rather "only just able" to play VR, you might not get your money's worth out of the extra image clarity it provides.

ok my FB account is not linked XD

Rift is worse in almost every way compared to modern ones
I'd like to differ. The CV1 Touch controllers are imo the most comfortable VR controllers ever made. Very well balanced, look good and just got well in the hand (it's as if they were made for Humans)
Same applies to the CV1 HMD. It's pretty comfortable and very lightweight.
Just the cable routing and the way the headstrap works means you'll be putting excessive stress on the cable Everytime you put on or off the headset.
I wouldn't really recommend it as an entry-level as the Quest 2 is probably a better buy (albeit a bit more expensive when properly kitted out)

#

The lenses and screens are probably the worst part of the CV1. Facebook on all their OLED HMDs is using a modified gamma curve to prevent black-level smearing from happening, but the result is that extremely dark scenes look like, as if you're staring at an LCD with quite some backlight bleed (only full black is actually black from my experience)
The lenses are also worse then the original Vive ones from my experience with having a lot more glare (although more as natural glare on the CV1, rather then the glare rings of the Vive)

#

The cheapest way to avoided Facebook in VR is either by getting a used WMR headset (definitely worse then the Quest 2, but a lot cheaper) or by getting a used Vive (cheapest entry-way into the lighthouse eco-system)

#

||(sorry for the wall of text ๐Ÿ‘‰๐Ÿ‘ˆ)||

wooden ember
#

i will check the second hand market

thick escarp
#

Yep, if you want to avoid Facebook but not spend a lot, used market is a pretty good idea.

While it is certainly possible that the Rift is very comfortable to wear (I never had one on my head or the controllers in hand, was mostly focused on the specs), I am sure @haughty thistle will agree that buying a Rift right now is not a good idea. It is an old headset that is not supported in hardware or software updates anymore. And it's not like now you can make a new Oculus account for your Rift without Facebook, so you are not even dodging a bullet there... ๐Ÿ˜ฆ

But I very much have to agree that comfort is not to be understated. It's much rougher to wear a giant thing on your face for hours than what you might call "normal gaming". ๐Ÿ™‚

I already have an Oculus account (dev one) since I have the Go and side load app on it
