Very much depends on what you wanna spend and some more preferences. Most people in here would probably recommend one of two:
-
If money is not a big issue, and you want the best experience when it comes to tracking, image, and controllers: Probably get a Valve Index. Pros: Great tracking and controllers, very good image quality. Cons: You have to install base stations in your play are and are cable-tied to your PC.
-
If money is an issue, you want the least involved setup and like some standalone and/or cable free playing: The Oculus Quest 2 is a great value. Pros: Works standalone, portable, no cables, very good image quality. Cons: Tracking is good but not perfect. And it's Facebook, some people really hate Facebook getting their money and tracking their data.
Ghanks
Thanks*
index has quite a few flaws though
varying build quality
badly designed hinge
not for wide headed users
subpar lenses
I know. But I have come to learn that people who are never here, just pop in and ask the one "best VR headset" question without any additional details want exactly three things:
-
Don't deter them from VR entirely by bashing on Facebook a ton or discussing minor details. They won't read that, otherwise they'd have watched some three popular videos on the subject. They want quick info.
-
Don't recommend too many different things. They want one or two options.
-
They want the "best average"... Which imo are these two...
The question rn is quest 2 or something else
If they want something else then explain afterward
But i rarely recommend headsets, i don't think I'm "qualified enough"
I just was really hit by the one guy who stopped by a few days ago, asked the simple question, and we kept bashing on about horrible data collection, and support issues, and breaking headsets, and company policies, ... And in the end, he just said "Alright then, I guess I'll not get into VR at all." and left. That is probably the worst outcome.
Lmoa yeah
I mean, you could have those discussions about any gaming PC. There's tons of data collection on Steam, and horrible experiences with breaking parts and bad support. But that's just what it is. When I built my latest PC, the motherboard and the PSU came DOA. Took me ages to figure that out and discuss with manufacturers...
Did you got refunded/new parts ?
Nope, all brand new. It does happen with motherboards, because they are quite elaborate nowadays, but the PSU really surprised me. The problem is that I don't (like LTT) have a couple of each at home so I can switch them out and see what works.
Oh, you mean, did they exchange it? Yes, they did. It was both obviously broken, and not by me. So I got new parts/refunds.
Wow, that's cool! It even had an ISA PnP slot on there, in addition to the old PCI!
Isa pnp ?
The long black slot on the top left. That pre-PCI.
Google image ๐
All right
Was i ever born when theses were around
Gonna ask my dad when he come back if he remembers
He has been into computer since the beginning of them
That's an actual photo of the motherboard I built in before this one. I was completely on Macs between then and about 18 months ago. Skipped the "Intel is on top" era entirely.
Oh yeah, it totally is. That's what consumer boards looked like.
That's a bad design
For USB and sound and network, you would need extra plugin cards.
Nothing on-board in the chipset.
Well, glass panels weren't a thing back then, so nobody cared. ๐คฃ
Hey, it had support for two different kinds of memory slots (on the right) and two different kinds of plug-and-play cards (on the left). Today, you won't find that kind of compatibility today!
Yep, that is sexy alright. But honestly, even today, I don't give anything about looks...
Better if it looks good
This is what my PC "looks like". You see the cables on the bottom right? Exactly, it's in a small room next to my desk. ๐คฃ
This is an even crazier board, no holes for a cooler, guess why ?
Dope
No cooler, I guess?
But that board is definitely newer than mine.
But it's a pretty fancy board. Mine was just cheap. I am sure there were cooler looking boards at the time, too. But yeah, since the arrival of tempered glass, motherboard looks have changed a lot.
Yep
I don't care about looks tbh
I can't afford to
This is mine
And my PSU cables are disgusting red yellow ect
But it runs
Looks fine to me. ๐ My case it closed as well, nothing to see in there.
So this is what it looks inside.
Damn
Had to install (and uninstall) an RGB software to turn off the one RGB thing in there (the GPU had some).
Looks good but cable management isn't the greatest ๐
My gpu is ugly no rgb or anything
The case sucks for cable management.
That's what looks are all about. ๐
Ugh. Did you do any overclocking?
Sure did
I'm 1% on userbenchmark
Not sure if it's like that in 3d mark
But still on the top part
Yeah got around 10% gain in one of the benchmarks, not really tried the others
Usrebrenchkark?
Sorry, but that site is so $hitty, I wouldn't even use them to compare two cards of the same maker and generation...
I actually just had the time to catch up with your chat. I just saw that word and had to respond xD
I use it only to compare my 2060 to other 2060s
I was showing my results cz I'm low-key proud of em
To finish the impression of how much I care about looks vs. convenience... This is what my desk looks like right now. A KVM switch to toggle between my PC, my Mac mini, and my work laptop. An extra Mac keyboard just sitting there. And a monitor stand that I can quickly raise for a standing position. Looks horrible, works great. As I said, PC is in the other room, for noise.
As long as your system works for you, that's the important bit. Like maybe 5-6 years ago, I was gaming on a 750Ti, because that was all what my parents where willing to spend on my system
Well, it's my work setup, I am in home office. Not meant for gaming. And yes, the mug is of all three of my kids.
Why is the first thing I see the Air up bottle xX
I don't flatscreen game at all, only VR...
Air up? Pretty cool, it helps me drink more water.
A little overpriced imo.
But I don't change the pods for like two weeks or so... So it's not too expensive.
How much is one pod ?
The "Air Up" bottle you can plug a pod on top with different scents. So the water kinda tastes like it had some stuff in it (apple, or orange, or even coke), but it's really just water.
Until if could afford my system by myself i had a 2005 i mac
I think the pods are between 1 and 2โฌ each.
For two weeks it good actually
But if that gets me through two weeks, I'm okay with it. I think officially, they want you to change it every other day, with the amount I drink. But I think it still smells enough after 10 days...
You got some good stuff actually should be rather quiet ?
Mine sound horrible on the fan rattle it's broken, but i don't wanna change it
I usually mix some Sirup in with the sparkling water I get at work. Tastes like real Pepsi or 7up, yet I only have this tiny little bottle sitting at my desk at work
Yes and no. The fans are okay, and the case is sound dampening. But it's louder than either the Mac mini or my work laptop, so I just put it next door...
Is the room ventilated ?
Putting in a closet isn't ideal
Also you can set a zero fan curve on your gpu made my pc way quieter
Sounds awesome. But when you hit your late 20s, you'll notice that drinking anything with calories in it will totally go right to your fat deposits. ๐ Honestly, when I was your age, I thought that caring about weight and having hurting limbs is for people who are 60 and over. I am 40 now, and if I go too crazy in Beat Saber without warming up, and I overstretch my shoulder, it will hurt for weeks. Stuff like that used to last for a day or two. Getting old sucks.
It's not age you are 40
I'm 16 tho i hurt my back for two weeks
Even if I do a lot of sport
See, that's the advantage of being older. ๐ We just built a house a few years ago. So, being tech-adjacent, I put in tech stuff wherever possible. We have a central ventilation system that will create air flow in every room. And in the summer, we can use the heat pump to actually cool the floors. This tiny room with the PC does not go over 22ยฐC. Oh yes, of course I have sensors for temperature, dust, and CO2 in there. ๐
Older and wealthier ๐
If it's a cool roll you could try a zero fan curve i can help you set it up for your gpu
Well, honestly, when you are building your own house, adding cool tech stuff everywhere will make the difference between 650k vs. 620k euros or something. In the end, this just means that you'll pay off the house for one more year, which doesn't sound as bad...
Sure but to buy a 650 k house is something we can't do so that's kind of a question of money ๐ค
Nah. We have photovoltaik on the roof. And I wrote a script that, when the house battery is fully charged and the PV is still producing more power than we need (which is often), the PC will turn on and do some mining on the card. And zero fan profile doesn't really work for mining...
I thought about it long, because I don't want to mine and use power. But when the battery is full, sending all the leftover power to the grid will lose so much of it (like, only half will actually get to the power company) that I might as well just do some light mining with it. I mostly did it for fun, but it actually racks up some 50-100โฌ per month.
Cool
If energy companies would pay more for injecting power into the grid, it would make much more sense to give other people access to it, then burning it yourself. But as-is, Mining might actually give you more money, depending on the efficiency of your card :/
I'm gonna leave soon gonna go to class...
Sure was a nice talk, I'll catch you later โ๏ธ
Well, we never built the PV for economic reasons, more for ecological ones. We basically don't use outside energy, with the heat pump being electric as well, so that feels good. But the "leftover energy" really doesn't make sense to all send to the grid, even for ecological reasons. At noon on a normal day, the PV will produce around 5-6kW, and the battery (20kWh) is already full. So taking around 0.25 of those 6kW to mine before sending the rest away did not feel like a bad idea...
Have fun in class!

There's a new online mod for boneworks
There one was before but it was very bad
Can't wait to download it
If someone wanna play with me when it comes out ?
You already know that you don't want me as an incapable partner who can't untangle his arms and legs to save his life. ๐
Well, it's about time. Finally, the supermarkets here have put up Christmas decorations and shelves full of Christmas sweets. Aaaah, it's that time half of the year again.
Nah could a lot of fun, I'd love to
The most wonderful time of the year
@rapid otter Oh man, this was very tense right now. I played Boneworks for another hour before the kids get home. I just went through the dark sewers. All was good until I
- realized I was keeping track of the pistol bullets and ran out of ammo for the automatics because it looked like I had plenty...
- realized at exactly this time that I lost my pistol somewhere in the dark, didn't even know when.
So I had to chomp through a bunch of the dudes with nothing but an axe. I am now at the next save point and definitely need a break to breathe. I hit my wall only once. I should probably turn up my guardian sensitivity for this...
Nice
This the boneworks experience
I never ran out of ammo during the story mod
There's more than 40k ammos in all the game actually
Yeah, I got really overconfident, because I was collecting a ton in the beginning. Then didn't notice that I watched only the pistol ammo (I know, rookie mistake), which was still over 1500. So I slacked off collecting all the ammo cases, I thought I would be good forever...
What I like most though is that on every new "chapter", I realize that the dude in the video scenes is Mike Diva, and that the narrator is Sam (from Corridor Digital). Makes the game feel like it was made by friends...
If you under clock and undervolt then it's always efficient enough
You don't have to go far even if you have an old gtx 480
Ho yeah rookie mistake ๐
Hey, how does the microphone work with VR? Is it voice detection or push-to-talk?
Voice detection works
Is there still a push-to-talk option?
huh yeah everything (games/apps) has push-to-talk on PC now
Cuz I wouldn't want to mess around in Vrchat with someone else talking to me or something lolll
Ok
You can't really access you app while in vr
I don't think you can bind a key for push to talk on discord
no not in Discord lol I meant in games
I never played vr chat can't tell you
rip thanks tho
Nvm, I found on Vrchat's documentation that X button is for mute
VRChat uses somewhat of a voice activation. It's basically like how it is in Discord by default. You can enable Push-To-Talk in VRC, but I'm not sure if that's desktop only, or available in VR as well...
Alternatively, as you mentioned, you can map a button on your controller to be a mic mute switch
Good to know, thanks! I'll be using it with VirtualDesktop anyways so I guess it'll work. If it doesn't I'll just bind mute. Mute switch is kinda a PTT
Quick question, if I use the Quest 2 to play SteamVR exclusively, do I need to login using FB account for the initial setup?
Yes you do. If you want to connect the Quest with SteamVR with anything but ALVR, you'll also need to be logged in with Facebook all the time you're using it. With Air Link and Quest Link not just on the Headset but PC too
Well... since that was a bit confusing let me unwrap that a bit...
Setup -> Always requires Facebook login. There's no way around that as of today.
Any Application purchased from the Oculus Store will require you to be logged in on the Quest. This does include Virtual Desktop.
Quest Link and Air Link requires you to be logged in on the Quest and on the Oculus PC software.
ALVR is a Homebrew application and will work regardless of your login status on the Quest.
Thing is, once you've set up the Quest and enabled ADB on it, you can remove the Facebook login on the Quest, but it will turn off Quest and Air Link, as well as prevent you from running any Applications downloaded from the Oculus Store.
Hope this is helpful to your @chilly imp ^^
Thank you so much for the info, so in the end, FB account is still mandatory regardless
The Vive Wireless is so frustrating that I'm looking to buy a Quest 2 and play PCVR on it
Have you put a fan on your Wireless Adapter? I, besides many others on the internet, have found that the Vive Wireless Adapter often likes to overheat. So even a small weak fan can help a lot and actually for me has solved almost all problems with it. It only goes to a black screen very rarely when I'm standing around for too long not moving in Beat Saber
Yes, that is the first thing I did. Active fan cooling, nothing to block between the headset and wireless adapter and only about 1m from the play space
From the log, this seems to be the problem
It is quite random unfortunately, it can be stable for days with 5+ hours of play time but can disconnect every few minutes like today
Maybe contact HTC. This looks like either one of the antennas is having an unstable connection
Or you have wifi pollution in the 60GHz range (I doubt that though, unless you happen to have an 802.11ad router)
already send them an email asking for a solution, no respond for the last 10 days
Hmm...
Sounds weird
I've heard HTC support not being the best, but they usually respond within 1-2 buisiness days...
They responded back from my first email, asking to send them a log. Then nothing else after that
Yeah, HTC is kinda low on staff, so you're probably in a queue or something. Maybe send them another E-Mail and ask for an update
As for WiFi router, I have one in the room (AmpliFi HD)
The vive wireless signal mostly stays at 5/5 or 4/5 bar
That ain't a 60GHz router...
Yes I know, just want to mention it
Yeah, I was only mentioning it, as an 802.11ad (or 60GHz) router could potentially mess with the Vive Wireless Adapter, but chances are low that one might even have one...
Are you using any sort of extension cable on the base antenna?
No, straight to the PCIe card
I am using AMD, R9 5950x
Then it might be a Motherboard or PCIe Gen thing... Or maybe something totally different xD
I have made sure that the PCIe slot in which my Wireless Adapter card is installed in, is set to PCIe Gen 3. And like I said, other then the black screen issue, no other issues so far...
Tried with B550 and X570 board, same issue, also with swapping around different PCIe Gen 3 slot with no luck.
Sometime it would completely shut down and turn black, or grey screen, or randomly disconnect all controllers and trackers
Same or different Vendor?
Same vendor from ASUS. B550F and X570-F
I used to have these exact issues on my Intel system. And The Vive Wireless adapter is supposed to work better on Intel lol
So because all of that, might get the Quest 2 and sell the Wireless Adapter
I have the X570-E from Asus. Pretty much identical, except mine has an additional 2.5GBit/s LEn port and built-in Wifi. So weird...
What BIOS version are you on? latest?
Yes, everything is up to date
reinstall Windows, disable DOCP/OC setting, nothing seems to change

Disable DOCP actually make it a lot worse
That's sooo weird?
maybe I'm one of those extreme case
Do you have experience playing PCVR wirelessly on the Quest 2? If so, what would be the best software to use in term of latency/image quality
I don't have a Quest 2 (as I'd never create a Facebook account), but I do have a Quest 1 with an old legacy Oculus Account. Because it's a Quest 1, I hadn't had the chance to try out Air Link sadly. From what I've heard, Virtual Desktop (20$ on the Quest Store) was however a noticably better experience then ALVR for me. Whereas I had to crank down the quality all the way to 10Mbit/s for it to even play at playable framerates on ALVR, VD works flawless at 100Mbit/s. I think on the Quest 2 with Wifi 6 you can push it all the way to 125 or 150Mbit/s, but I'm not too sure... (Quest Link on the Q1 is limited to 150MBit/s and 500MBit/s on the Q2, tho more then 250MBit/s is not advisable due to stability issues)
One thing to keep in mind is, just like with the Vive Pro 2 + WA, neither the Quest 1 nor the Quest 2 will run at native res in PCVR mode. VD looks slightly more compressed to my eyes then then Quest Link, but it's only a fine difference. Comparing the Quest 1 with the Vive Pro 1 however, the Vive Pro wins hands down. This is because the Vive WA can run at a resolution slightly above native res of the Pro 1, and the Quest 1 runs at a resolution more akin to the Rift CV1.
I was always under the impression that the Quest 2 had a higher PCVR resolution then the Quest 1 (and this might still be true), but I have compared the "native" render res (setting render scale in both Oculus and Steam to 1x/100%) of my Quest 1 in PCVR mode, with the "native" render res of the Quest 2 from @rapid otter, and we found that both were exactly the same. So it might just be that the Quest 2 just has less compression artifacts...
Thank you, that great to know. I had some pretty good experience with the Q1 + VD before I upgrade to Vive Pro
The software will probably have less of an impact than the quality of your wireless router and house network, as well as how many devices are connected to your router at the time. I have tried Airlink and Virtual Desktop, both with a Quest 2. They both work fine and I couldn't tell a huge difference. With Virtual Desktop, you will be able to fine tune the settings a bit more, so you may be able to run it on less optimal networks, and you might be able to squeeze some more performance out of it. Airlink is more of a plug&play option.
The latency was about 30-40ms iirc, but that without using WiFi6
If you already have Virtual Desktop and know the settings a bit, I would probably use that.
Bonus: The streaming and starting of games has nothing to do with Facebook software. ๐
Well, other then the licensing check when firing it up (afterall, without being logged in, VD stopps to run)
So back to Oculus for now I guess, can't wait for the next Valve headset
Having used the Quest 2 for a while now, I don't think it's a bad device. If you can live with the Facebook account and just use it for PCVR, it's hard to beat. And I don't miss the wire, not one bit. ๐
Well, FB is the only thing I don't like about the Quest, but if flawless wireless PCVR can be achieved, there is no other option isn't it.
I'm just always mentioning the "not native res" part, as for me, the blurry-ness that comes with the lower-then-native render resolution always reminds me of when I'm not wearing my glasses and it kinda grinds my gears. I know everyone has a different opinion on that, so I'll usually leave it at that
Will increase SS in SteamVR help somewhat?
๐
The resolution that is sent to the headset is limited to a fixed resolution (due to limitations of the SOC). So increasing SS in SteamVR probably only helps with AA, but not really with the blurry-ness.
That a tradeoff of wireless VR, but I willing to take it and not to worry about random disconnection
Actually once it's set up it's very stable
I rarely get disconnected
If you have anything to ask @me i always play in wireless
On the topic of Quest, is there any accessories that you recommend? Planning to buy from AmazonUS since the shipping is quite fast to NZ
and a WiFi6 router if possible, I don't need anything fancy. Probably only 3 devices will be connect using WiFi, other than the Quest 2
I have an ax55 from asus
Really good overall
Got it for 85 bucks actually
You need a good speed 800 mbs minimum i think
Just to be sure
The wifi goes thru walls perfectly fine
It's not like 60GHz which get's blocked by your head, duh
You can get a head strap of face strap but i would recommend buying your headset first and see if it's good fro you
I don't need anything on mine
There are basically no accessories available for the Quest in NZ so planning to get it anyway
New Zealand ?
Yes
does anybody know a game on oculus where you can travel to greek
Maps vr ? If it's on quest
do you mean google earth vr
Yeah
I might buy my Quest 2 this week, oops
My gf is like "at least wait till christmas and buy it with the money you'll get then" but... I mean in the end 500$ rn or 500$ in 3 months is still 500$ in the end, nah?

I did tell her that my new cellphone was my last big purchase tho
I think I fucked up guys
$300 isn't too terribly much if you have a job
It's not chump change but it's not an lung transplant
Speaking of money I just go my free quest 2 silicone face cover
I have a pretty good job tbh
The Quest 2 is about a week of work tho
I make about 1000$/2w and Quest 2 tax in is about 460$
I have to go to the grocery store rn with my gf and there's a BestBuy right next to the grocery store
that has Quest 2 128gb in stock
I might ask my gf to go
I would not recommend running this natively on the Quest. Anything you get there will not look the way you want it to, just because of the storage restrictions. Google Earth VR works nicely if you have a gaming PC you can stream from. There is a version on the Oculus store, but it doesn't work well with the Quest, definitely get the Steam one and save you some hassle.
@thick escarp Hey sorry to bother. Is there a performance difference between standalone and virtualdesktop mode for Quest 2?
For example, would it be better to run Beat Saber on Standalone or Virtualdesktop mode?
Yes, there is a difference. Generally, on PC you will have a (albeit small) lag. So very fast-paced games might feel off. But the PC version, even if it is the exact same game, has much better visual quality. So I usually do play Beat Saber on the Quest natively, but most of the rest as PCVR streamed, because it just looks way better. Even with the video stream compression.
Alright, good to know, because Beat Saber might be one of the only games that I'd like to play when I'm not at home with my PC
So I might just put Beat Saber on standalone and the rest on PCVR
Nope. Talking to your girlfriend before you make larger decisions is the opposite of f*ing up. ๐ I mean, worst case you'll wait a bit longer but not make her mad by not telling her...
Yeah, that sounds great. I do have a couple of native Quest games that I really like and can take with me wherever I go.
Yah I mean I can't not tell her since we live together. I just don't understand her point. I know she wants me to take the right decision but like I said, in my book, 500$ right now or 500$ later... still 500$...
And there's a few exclusive titles that are worth it for me.
Oh nice, didn't know Quest had exclusive titles, good to know. I should be fine with 128gb anyways as most games will be in PCVR
Well, right now you are really pumped up and excited and want to get into VR. Maybe taking a short beat and calming down for a day or two is a good idea. If you still want the Quest, I don't think it's sold out by then. That's something your girlfriend will certainly understand.
Yes, 128G is plenty.
I mean I know I want it, I'll get it one day that is for sure. I've actually been wanting a VR for a longgg time now. Like I seriously know that one day I'll have one, so why wait. I don't have rent to pay, or electricity, or whatever actually. All I pay is my phone and I'm lucky enough to work for a telecoms company so my phone plan costs 12$ tax-in per month.
I guess I just have a "why wait if it can be done right now" feeling
Understandable. Middle ground is usually a good idea. So maybe offer her that you'll really think about it for another two days so you can be sure. Feels like she'll have to agree on that, since you came one step towards her. ๐
Can you mod Beat Saber on Quest 2 btw? (not in PCVR mode I mean) @thick escarp
I guess with BMBF?
Yeah but it risks your account being banned by facebook
Back in the day you'd have to pay $500 usd for a quest 1 with 128gb of storage
Yes, BMBF works fine and has done so for me for almost 2 years. I have never heard of anybody having their account banned because of a modded Beat Saber, and a quick google search tells me that this is not really a thing. Yes, Facebook can and will ban some accounts, but you are at much higher risk if you use incorrect information or inappropriate posts or something... BMBF works great, and you should absolutely and totally mod Beat Saber.
Nice, I'll try it out then! I officially have my Quest 2 by the way! @thick escarp Only two things are: I feel like it will easily give me some sinuses headache because of the pressure, and also it's a bit blurry still (with any of the 3 presets)
I'll try it out with my glasses tomorrow to see if it helps
With the glasses, definitely use the spacer so you don't scratch your lenses. For the interpupillary distance, try to actually measure it and pick the closest setting.
Most importantly, for sharp images and comfortable fit, the Quest will have to be in the right vertical spot. Try moving it up and down. Also: Shorten your top headstrap enough. Most of the weight should be on there, not the "around the head" strap clamping the Quest to your face against gravity. I made that error for quite a while. ๐
how do I even measure the interwhatever?
And yeah I think the straps are okay but I'll readjust them tomorrow. I put the silicone cover and I get red kinda marks in my face after having the headset on for a little while
but it doesnt feel too tight so
With a rulerin front of a mirror. ๐ But there are also apps for the phone where you put a credit card size for reference and the phone will tell you.
Everyone gets the marks. ๐ It's a right of passage. They got way better for me with a replacement headstrap that had some weight in the back, but they are still there.
Yeah haha I might replace it, I'll see in a few weeks
You're in NZ, right? That's a bit far, otherwise I might have one leftover. ๐ Still hoping to go to Auckland around Easter for my sister in law's wedding, but I don't think you'll let people in by then. My kids also won't be vaccinated yet, probably...
Oh, I mixed that up, sorry. Still a bit far, I am in Europe. Parcel across the pond is about as much as the thing cost in the first place...
No worries haha. I'll see if the reg one is okay first, then I'll order something online if there's a major prob
Welp, I'm going to sleep now. It's 1h am here

Have a good day! I believe it is 7am for you
Yep, it is. Good night!
Hehe. Man, you'll get to know "early" when you have kids. ๐คฃ Mine are already in school/kindergarden. They usually wake up between 5:30 and 6am, so I aim for 5am myself to get some eMail done and have a cup of coffee before they occupy me...
I usually wake up at 6 to be at 8 and 7 to be at 9 to school
5 am ? Aren't you tired !
That's still real school, right? Not university or something? I kinda remember it starting fairly late in France, yes. I was there on an exchange program for a few weeks. Here, school starts at around 7:30...
It's all way better since my kids don't wake up too often during the night anymore. ๐ Last spring's lockdown was rough. My wife and me both work full time, so with having to take care of the kids all day, I worked 3am-8am and then 6pm to 10pm. No fun, and no time for VR left.
Time table i got it
No, not at all. I just can work whenever I want to, and my wife had to be in lots of meetings during normal work hours. So I had to take care of kids during normal daytime, and work early mornings and late evenings. ๐ฆ
Whooooo
Yeah, the pandemic hit people very differently. Single people got bored and depressed, families were never bored but struggled with workload... Oh well.
My dad and mom work when they wants
I was glad it happened
Not ppl diying
I get it. ๐
Yeah, without kids, I probably would have actually enjoyed that as well. I am fairly good at not getting bored, lots of hobbies and sports to be done. But the two school/kindergarten lockdowns were really, really rough... Let's hope we don't have to go through that again.
Ho yeah
Wowza
Looks like I am part of the modding community
You're an Oculus App Developer now, and modded only for debugging. If Mark Zuckerberg ever calls and asks you. ๐ I mean, you do have a developer account already if you patched the app, right?
Absolutely worth it, the custom maps are not only over better music (in my taste), but actually often much better than the original soundtrack ones.
I can now free myself of angel voices on expert+
is it safe to install windows 11 now for vr?
I think tho it's not useful at all
I wouldn't recommend running a pre-release OS as your main OS ever. It can be unstable, insecure and slow. Better wait at least for the final release
I've been running Windows 11 in the Dev channel since it released. I switched to the Beta channel last week, just to be safe. I've had a pretty stable experience so far. @lofty minnow
Honestly the first Windows 11 Dev build was the most fucked up. Taskbar wasn't working on multiple monitors and some other dumb bugs like that. Right now for me everything works fine and I am on 22000.168
Damn you and your recommendations! ๐คฃ I just thought I'd play some Lone Echo in my lunch break, to see if I like it. Now it's 6 hours later and I finished the game... ๐คช Will have to work all night... It's a great game, very moody and calm. Plays more like a Stanley Kubrick movie than like a game.
It a real gem
Personally i don't like finishing games fast
I played it for a whole week
Taking time
Me neither. The problem is that VR is so immersive and I am not used to being in a video game in the first place. So I am incredibly invested, really scared of dying, and will keep at it like a madman. Thank god for battery packs. ๐ I will then usually play the game again and take much, much longer, enjoying everything since I kinda know it ends well. ๐
You are lucky to be very immersed
It's a thing i lost a but as time went on
This is the reason ppl play
It's the stress and the relief that get you immersed
That's why competitive gaming works so well
What is avg battery life of Quest 2 anyways? Is the battery pack that useful?
The battery pack adds what? 2-3h?
Yeah
The Quest battery will usually last longer than my gaming session. It is very uncommon to play VR for more than two hours at a time. But it happens. I mostly like the additional battery because it adds weight to the back and makes the headset more comfortable. Plus, I had a few power banks sitting at home anyways, this was not an investment...
Okay thanks, good to know
I think it can easily be a bit longer if you go to social VR apps, like VRChat or something. I don't do that, but I can see how you can easily spend tons of time there...
Yeah my battery pack weighs almost as much as the quest which makes the weight perfect
I have another better one but it is actually heavier than the quest lol
Oooo I learned earlier that you can set the IPD between the settings
Yeah, and it holds fairy well. Luckily, I am dead on the middle setting anyways. ๐
apparently you can force the lenses in the quest 2 a bit further as well and get 69mm or so ipd with a spacer
As much as you want, i put a battery in my pocket run the cable in my shirt, i never ran out of battery on this one battery bank, i also use a lighter one sometimes... I recommend 5-6 thousands mAh should be good for 2-3 hour
How much should I pay for Reverb G2s?
Yeah nah I'm definitely not paying close to MSRP that's hella bread lol, looking at something open box/used, new is fine too if the price is right, ideally <$400 is what I was thinking but idk if that's too low/high
Also actually, does anyone know if multiple Reverb G2's next to each other will have tracking issues with the controllers? Seems like the controllers rely on light tracking and they look the same so ๐คท
It uses acceleratometers and tilt sensors
WMR encodes some data in the controller tracking LEDs and can thus find just the controllers that are paired to the headset/PC.
TL;DR: Yes you can use multiple G2s in one room
Or however it's called
Same applies to the Quest/Quest 2 and Rift S. Afaik the only headset you have to be careful using multiple of in the same room is the Rift CV1 and Rift DK2
The OG Vive is pretty unhappy with tracking multiple in the same room sometimes too, it works eventually just takes a while and sometimes derps out ๐คท . Hoping the Reverb G2 is better in that regard so we don't have to use it with Vive controllers or something of that nature ๐ . Any other potential caveats with the G2?
Never heard of that with the Vive. The Lighthouse system is designed from the ground up as an arcade-compatible system. Each lighthouse tracked devices is tracking completely on it's own and only needs to receive the IR pulses from the lighthouses (which also passively work on their own)
The only downsides I see with the G2 are the limited tracking area (it can't see the controllers down by your hip for example) and the lack of touch sensitivity on the controller buttons. Both only really affecting social VR titles
For an arcade or business, it might be of note that the back foam of the G2 is not removable, only the facial interface (which is attached using magnets)
Asgard's Wrath...
I just played some Asgard's Wrath, and can very much recommend it if you find it on sale somewhere. In the beginning, it is a lot of watching and not enough doing for my taste. But it looks and feels very epic and amazing. It's no Alyx, and the story feels a bit more basic so far, but the visual design is definitely up there.
Yes, it's huge. I just added another drive to my system (which I luckily still had), just so I have some more space. For me, the biggest issue is that the main quest is apparently very long, like 40 hours. I will be at this for a month, probably. Afterwards, I can free the drive space again. ๐
I have the space i think but my download speeds are so incredibly slow
For boneworks I needed 3-4 days
No VR gaming tonight. Gotta tackle my "wall of shame" in the basement. I just re-routed some Ethernet cables, and decided that enough is enough, I gotta rebuild this from the ground and do some proper cable management. Wow, this really grew over my head with time...
Why do you have so much cables ?
The floors in my house are separated by huge concrete ceilings. So I need 1-2 wifi routers on every floor. And I have a lot of house tech connected to the network, so I added another router per floor for guests. So I needed a decent firewall to put the guest IPs in a separate VLAN and manage the access. And then there's a NAS and some Pi servers, and central ventilation, and the heat pump, ... All with access to the Home Server... It just added up over the years.
That's why I'm mad that Linus is only now doing the research on what is ideal. I could have used that 5 years ago...
I want a smart home that doesn't use cloud servers. Which is a pain in the a** nowadays...
I just want a house
Nah jocking aside
Our house is very small one 2.4 ghz wifi is enough
I have wifi 6 but just for my quest
Nothing high tech in our house...
@thick escarp
My room is probably the most high-tech in my home....
I don't have much tech but my room is def the most high-tech in the house
Well, just imagine you tech guys being 20 years older, building a house and deciding on everything. That'll get you to what Linus is doing, and what I did to a degree.
It's a hell of a hassle to add some things afterwards, like ethernet cables or more wall plugs, so you should just do it in the beginning.
I have lived in roughly 7 different homes. This is the first one that can even remotely be considered high tech...
Ho yeah maybe in 20 years who knows
My room isn't really high tech
There's a pc and quest
Pretty much it
Ho i forgot the broken leds on the ceiling
The tech affinity increases with every generation. Like, I am trying to get my kids excited about tech, electronics and programming mostly, and they are now building robots and stuff!
Look what my 6 year old daughter did with the leftover Ethernet cables... Built and programmed a laser maze with an Arduino in our basement...
Looks awesome with some fog and the lights off.
ooo so cool
Can you adopt me it's not too late
Nah, I'll send you the code and 3D models for printing, so in 15 years, you can build it with your kids. ๐
Well, my kids when they're 16 probably wished that I wasn't into tech but rather football or whatever. That's just how life goes...
Eh
It's cheaper but for around $100 less I believe it's just not nearly as good
40% or more slower
Heavier and lower resolution
I'd it's a great price it can be good
If it's below $150 usd then sure
The only two benefits of the Q1 over the Q2 that I can see are that the Q1 has proper physical IPD adjustment (and not just some wanna be 3 options thing) and the fact that the Q1 is using OLED. Maybe if you play a lot of Beat Saber, I can see the rubberised material on the controllers as beneficial?
But yeah, the Q2 is pretty much better in every other way.
Thing is, the only reason I'm keeping my Q1 and no one can separate me from it, is because the Q2 requires a Facebook login, which the Q1 did not.
Do you know if this is still true? For legacy accounts, sure, but iirc, any new Oculus account will be Facebook-linked, even on a Quest 1? And I think there was also a deadline for the Oculus only accounts until you will have to switch?
Facebook can't lock out existing customers out of their purchases, just because the customer decided not to switch to a different account system. Either they have to refund me the price of the Q1 and all game purchases done for it or they have to continue allowing legacy accounts to login and play all their games and use the hardware to it's fullest extent, albeit with any Online feature turned off and being excluded from Multiplayer.
My guess is that the second case is going to happen
If they stop allowing login with legacy accounts altogether, you can be certain I'm going to court and trying to get my money back...
Yeah, I would guess they'll just lock out new purchases and online functionality. Which is fine by me. ๐
That's what I'm guessing too
Welp... only time will tell. Facebook has said they'll keep Legacy accounts active throughout at least 2022, so we'll see what happens in 2023...
Yeah... They also said they would never force a Facebook account on Oculus products. So take it with a grain of salt. ๐
Well if this recent anti trust act goes through then facebook could find itself without oculus
I got the first dose of the moderna vaccine yesterday and now I cant play beat saber
Oh yeah, that'll do that to you. Got Moderna as well. The first dose I had a sore arm for a day and then again even worse about a week later, funnily. The second shot was more like a bad hangover for a day, but less shoulder.
Heh... First shot (Biontech in my case) my blood preassure did a dipp for a bit. First time that happened to me actually. Safe to say the rest of that day I was basically useless. Arm was sore a couple of days after.
Second shot was only a sore arm for a couple of days thankfully...
But see the positive, rather not play Beat Saber for a couple of days then to possibly never play it again after an infection
One day off vr isn't that bad, had a back injury, haven't played for 2-3 weeks
Couldn't play vr though
The second shot was bad for me
Way worse than anyone I have talked to
Running VR games on Quest 2 from SteamVR, thoughts? I've seen a dude comment on Reddit saying SteamVR with Quest 2 and VirtualDesktop has some kind of weird delay that makes some games behave weird (Blade & Sorcery to be precise)
I would say that if you have really noticeable delay, your Wifi router might just be in over its head. ๐ Honestly, I can play Beat Saber via Virtual Desktop, and it doesn't really get much more sensitive to lag than that.
My router is fine I guess, I'm using the 5ghz
I havent had any problem so far, it's just that one weird guy that said SteamVR causes a delay
But when I have an option to start a game on Steam from SteamVR or in regular VR mode, which one should I take?
If you use Virtual Desktop, just start the game from there. Press the menu button, click on Games and pick it. That will take care of starting SteamVR and mapping the controllers and everything. You can't really run a VR game from Steam without SteamVR, so I don't know what magic they are doing in the background.
You will always have a delay when playing wirelessly. The Quest will track your hand movement, send that data to the PC, the PC will then render the image according to this movement and send the image back. This takes time. Milliseconds, but it is definitely a "delay" from your hand moving irl to your hand moving in the game. In my experience, it's not too noticeable.
Yeah but it seems like some of my games are not there
Hm, that's weird. I think I found all of mine. Are those special combinations, like non-VR games with mods?
Nope they're all from Steam
In any case: Running a VR game will launch SteamVR. I don't think it makes a difference if you start it from in there already or if the game starts SteamVR for you in the background.
At least that was yesterday, maybe they didnt finish installing and I just didnt notice
I'll see if all of my games are there later
Also is modding B&S easy? Seems fun
I tried it out yesterday and it seems like a super cool game
Is that on Quest or Steam? I think modding it is easy in both cases, just follow a tutorial. Pick a new one though, quite a few things have changed with the newest versions.
Steam
Yeah my friend talked about Nexus? I have no idea what that is but I'll check it out
It's a mod manager to easily download and manage your mods for a number of games. Yes, works pretty smoothly, can recommend. ๐
Put steam vr shortcut on your desktop from here you will be able to launch all the vr games
Well, SteamVR you can definitely just start from the Virtual Desktop menu, no need for a shortcut. But some games need to be started externally when script mods are added. E.g. Skyrim VR with the script extension mod will have to run some scripts before starting SteamVR and the game, so that needs a shortcut on the Desktop for simplicity.
Boneworks mod works the same but i still can run boneworks from steam vr and the mod script loads itself and once loaded it launch the game
Yes, different script mods have different startups.
I love scripts mods make me look cool with the text and the colors ๐
@tawdry dove @haughty thistle how
Ah yes. Had it worse on my VP2. Just one big pink blob when the framerate dipped. Cause of it was Hardware accelerated GPU scheduling lol
I remember i played boneworks at 150 ms for 2 days couldn't figure out what happened
It was an interference with Amd fsr
I removed oculus assw
The game do look better now no more of this weird screen alterations whenever i couldn't maintain fps
I think it's steam vr reprojection now and it's way better
It was annoying it always kicked in and made everything look bad
And my gpu was under used
@haughty thistle
Yeah. SteamVR reprojection basically takes the last frame and projects it into the 3D virtual space, so head movement is still accounted for. I personally prefer it over any sort of motion smoothing (as that always causes weird distortions)
I'm glad you can toggle permanently between those two on pretty much all headsets. The only company that forces motion smoothing on your is Oculus. The Rift Software has a toggle for ASW (their name for motion smoothing) in their debug tool, but it only adjusts the settings for the current session. Restart Oculus and the setting is turned back to normal...
I did it on the debug tool
Seems to still be off
Gotta try latter
Haven't played for so long
Tbh I haven't touched my Rift CV1 in a while, so they may have updated it. But it might also just be a CV1 thing that it doesn't save it :/
Gonna get a psu you guys know a good one ?
Depends on wattage
Idk tbh
@tawdry dove
My system consume less than 300 watts
So idk i want it to be quite future prood
Ok
PSU Tier List 4.0 rev. 14.8 Last Update: 27-07-2021 Legend : Gray - EoL/obsolete and/or otherwise not recommended for purchase. Green - small form-factor (gold and blue colors are disregarded due to scarcity of SFX PSUs) Gold - best units in the tier (includes requirements for blue color in tier ...
Scroll through the list and pick what you want
All psus on the list are good/guranteed to not explode
Yeah cz mine is a weird brand
I will use that one for my bench project
And buy a reliable one for my main
THe one that I have is a Seasonic Focus PX-850, but as sad cruton said, as long as you buy from a reputable brand, or a PSU people can generally recommend, you should be fine
Brand really doesn't mean much
Seasonic is generally reccomended but that does not mean they can't make a psu that has certain protections either broken or not working
In fact all manufacturers have at least one bad one for sale at all times
Hehe, see, I threw in a superchat and Linus actually read my suggestion for a bhaptics vest review. ๐ Since some Floatplane people left because the guaranteed early access was cancelled, I was trying to send them some cash anyways to show support, but apparently, I can't upgrade a yearly subscription. ๐คฃ
lmaooo
Let's see if they actually do it. VR is not really a focus of LTT, because the audience is still just too small. But Linus really likes it, so I am not losing hope. Maybe I will get a review in time for Christmas. ๐
Hoping so @thick escarp
any tips or DIY for vive cosmos
I'd recommend building some support for the hinge. It's not strong enough to keep the HMD parallel to your face (it usually sits on there at an angle, resulting in a blurry picture towards the bottom). It will make the headset harder to put on, but it will improve picture quality.
If you have the money for it, and a desktop tower with a free PCIe slot, I can also highly recommend the Wireless Adapter. Not a necessity imo, but a welcome improvement
thank i have noticed that ill see what i can do, i am saving up for the wireless adapter almost have enough for it
Do you have the Elite or the regular one?
Oh man, we just got our tax returns, and it is a lot more money than I anticipated. So I am not waiting for LTT and am pulling the trigger on a bhaptics vest. Boom. Gonna let you know how awesome it is (or not). But they also have face vibration, gloves, arms and legs. I will not get any of these and wait if LTT does a review and tells me which ones if any are worth getting. Thought about the arms in addition, because for archery and gunplay, those will add even more immersion.
Are you gonna get the 16 or 32 ?
Not sure yet. The price of the bigger one is quite high, I could almost get the small one and additional arms for that... ๐ฌ
define playable.
i meant to put in roblox vr at the end
other games = no
and playable at like 50 fps
At Nokia 3310 resolution ?
fsr tho
it'll give you .5% more pixels on the 730
cause you'd probably want better framerate anyways
Anyone have experience using 4x SteamVR 2.0 base stations for 2 Indexes? How well does it work? Would it be better to have 2 per Index isolated or have 4 per 2 together?
anyone know why the quest 2 still has a 10mb avatar limit in vr chat
Perf i guess
I don't know about quest but on pcvr you can change the size limit if you want to see avatars with a larger file size
It's no longer 10mb though. It's been 15mb for Medium and 20mb for Poor for a while now...
But yeah, the whole reason that limit (and other limits for that matter as well) exist, is due to Performance reasons
There is no performance difference with how many lighthouses you use. If you decide on using 4, then blocking something (like a hip tracker for FBT for example) is much harder
How many base stations max can you use? Are you limited to 4 or can you do 5+?
For 2 hypothetical Indexes in the same play area
Theoretically, up to 16 2.0 lighthouses per playspace. But practically speaking, your devices will only pick up a maximum of 4 at a time. So using more then 4 lighthouses becomes kind of pointless as it only really has an application in multi-room arcade environments...
This page I literally just found seems to indicate 4 max
So yeah your answer makes sense
Neat. Debating between an Index for $800 or an Index with an extra base station for $900
The extra lighthouses (2 vs 4) only have a noticeable difference for things like Fullbody tracking and maybe if your playspace/room are weirdly shaped. Lighthouse tracking already is as accurate as it can be with just one lighthouse. With 2 lighthouses you already have roomscale tracking. A 3rd and 4th lighthouse then only helps with occlusion or really large playspaces hth
wack
@haughty thistle it'll be used for multiple Indexes in a variety of areas, it seems like 4 for one large area split in half with one Index in each is the recommended solution
For use with pc, does the oculus quest 2 still force you to sign in with a Facebook account
Yes
Honestly, to me, it just always looked like Oculus is running Continuous Integration software development. So whatever they are currently working on, we can already see in the code, only that it's switched off. It can be months or even years down the line until this is ripe for an actual release.
I have the feeling that Quest development is a bit over hyped right now. A good example is how everyone jumped on the "working on the next headset" comment Zuckerberg gave somewhere. All channels proclaimed that a Quest 3/Pro is around the corner. I just thought: well, yeah, I mean, what else would the thousands of employees work on other than "the next headset"??? This comment really just means that the Quest was so successful that they keep working in this direction, big surprise! ๐
So, I think we can actually see some good hints where the development is headed, but nothing really about the time frame...
Always wait until it's out
Facebook wouldn't have been the only company to hype a product which never get into production/ ended up different
I dislike Facebook a lot. But in their defense here, they really aren't the ones hyping it, it's more the media outlets going a bit over the top with extrapolation and predictions. ๐
You are like Chickenbread you hate FB
I honestly despise all of their policies, and most of their main products, like the website and Whatsapp. I really hope that they won't run Oculus into the ground, because it's a product I actually really like.
Whatsapp is great
I don't hope they run it into the ground( i don't think they will ... )
WhatsApp is neither the first, nor the best, nor the most comfortable messenger out there. Its only appeal is that many people use it.
Discord the best for groups but whatsapp is the best for small groups/ talk to 1 guy
Does anyone know if the Valve index works on rx 570? Its not a performance or preference question, its a it outright wont display video on an R9 card because of some drivers issues. and an RX 570 is the only alternative we have right now
Kinda low spec
You won't get full res/full frame rate i think
I do not own one so I can't be sure
Amd drivers and vr aren't best friends
They have been known issues in the past
Tho a new driver will certainly fix it
Or an older one if they aren't new ones
@civic fractal
How much vram ?
Its the 4gb, im not concerned about preformance, just on or of, the r9s outright wont display video. Weaker cards will still display
I don't know of anybody in here who has tried that specific combination. If you have the cards at home anyways, I would probably just suggest to try if it works. It probably will somehow, and you will have to judge yourself if the performance is acceptable. I mean, popping a GPU in and out is not that much effort...
I mean, first google result:
https://www.reddit.com/r/SteamVR/comments/ds15ga/valve_index_on_rx_570/
So yeah, it'll probably run it. But you might not want to if you are prone to motion sickness at lower frame rates...
I saw that post, it says the r9s can too lol, i dont have the rx 570 on hand its 2 hours away, thats why im trying to find out
Gf stuck in canada cause of covid, when she can come home i have a 5600 xt
So just trying to find a placeholder for her
To what end? Do you want to actually run games on this card for an extended time? Then I don't think it's a good idea. If the frames drag as soon as you move your head too quickly, you'll lose a lot of the VR immersion and fun...
To run whatever it will
Dropped a grand on a vr headset, "sucks to suck wait 4 months"
Cant even try it out
I mean, I am pretty sure you can get it to run somewhat, maybe you'll have to rather scale down the resolution than the frame rate until you get a better card. But I would probably first try to fix the R9 driver issue. Seems more doable.
There appears to no fix, valve was offering refunds over it and blamed amd
Well, the solution is use linux
Oh damn, that sounds bad. Do you get the RX570 for free? Then I'd probably use that while waiting. And I'd turn down the resolution to keep the frame rate acceptable. Although it hurts to have a great new headset and then turn down the resolution. ๐
Apparently, its specific to windows
Oh, that sounds like a great solution! Love Linux, used it for years! ๐คฃ
570 for free, trying to get her to just buy a 1060 or something on kijiji
I don't think the 1060 is gonna give you significantly more performance than a 570. That's not worth dropping money on.
I mean, I ran VR on a GTX 1660 (no super), and it worked fine. Apparently, you can expect 25% fewer frames on a 570, which still sounds acceptable to me. If you can't go the Linux route (which I understand, especially if it's your GFs PC and she doesn't wanna dual boot all the time), I would say: Get the 570 for free and wait. It will work for now.
Hi all
Hello
Hello.
So, I actually just ordered my bhaptics vest. I will let you know how it feels and what the effect for fully supported games, mods, and sound-mapping is. ๐ Very excited, I am currently even holding back on VR gaming until the vest arrives, so I can try it all with vest. ๐
I would kill to try it in Boneworks
wouldn't buy a index used with all the problems it has for sure not for that price if the cable has failed and the thumbsticks fail wich will fail you need to pay 400usd
Uhm, is anyone having problems playing beat saber in quest 2?
Mine just won't start for some reason
Is it modded?
nop
Hm. Maybe you can just try resetting it, or uninstall and reinstall...
already try that :(
Oh, that sounds weird. Maybe contact their support directly, if there are known problems, they should be aware if anybody.
I fear most people in here will have a slightly older and modded version running...
Does anybody here have pimax and full body
So huh, if anyone else is having the same issue try this
Did you do this, and experience any loss in settings or save games? Because I would fear that might happen, and they didn't even warn you in this message. ๐ฌ Well, I hope that Beat Saber is back up and running...
And if they rely this heavily on Cloud saves (even Beat Saber, what's to save and sync there?), it might actually work flawlessly...
Didn't do it yet, but I doubt I'll be experiencing any data lost
You know how all VR gear makes you look like an idiot? Not quite true for the bhaptics vest, that thing looks fairly tactical...
Sadly, it only held for a couple of minutes on its initial charge. Gotta recharge the thing before I can actually try it for real.
I want that space lol
It's awesome, but it's not gonna stay like this forever. I have the entire floor to myself, but once the kids are old enough to not come to our bed every night, my wife and I will move up here and put up sofas, cupboard, and beds, and all that. ๐ฆ I will find an area though. Right now, I really enjoy turning and moving around without any issue when I am "in the zone", and only using thumbsticks to get to other areas.
Only thing I'd change would be adding a carpet on the floor so you'd be able to tell when you're nearing the walls and it's just more comfortable to stand on
Gonna look it up later ๐
what vr for steam im looking to buy one
it depends on how much money your willing to spend on it
any amount
cuz if you gunna save and splurge so why not
The cheapest way you can go, while still buying new, is to get a Quest 2 with like a 5-6m USB 3.0 cable. Alternatively you can try using your router at home with a software called Virtual Desktop, or get a dedicated router for that to play SteamVR titles. Either way, you probably also want to get a replacement headstrap if you intend on playing longer sessions.
On the used market you can find headsets like the Lenovo Explorer of the original Vive for a similar price or less and it will probably give you a better PCVR experience, just be aware that you wont have any warrenty and unlike the Quest, these require a PC to work in the first place. On the upside, you are not required to log into Facebook (which you will be with any of the Facebook/Oculus headsets)
You have Air Link too
If that's the case, the Valve Index is still the best all in one box option, but if you're willing to mix and match hardware, you may be able to get a better experience that way. I for example am mostly using a Vive Pro 1 with Index controllers. Imo a much better headset then the Index, if you're willing to look over the fact that you have to wear your own headphones and mic on it...
Lmao
Pavlov shack beta
That isnt on the quest store:(
Yea it is
In the app, you have to specifically search for "Pavlov: Shack Beta" and then scroll all the way down. It will say that it found one App in the "App Lab" that might not be as smooth an experience, if you want to see that as well. You say yes and can install it.
The App Lab is a bit "hidden" unless you know what you are looking for or are going via some homepage and external links.
Whaou
Played boneworks
Haven't played because of my backfor weeks
Felt so good
God damn
Missed this game
Oh, @rapid otter, you were curious: I just tried the haptics vest for a good two hours. It's different than I expected, but pretty cool. I have not tried the audio-to-haptics yet, mostly natively supported apps on the Quest 2 and modded PCVR game via Virtual Desktop.
The installation of mods is... just like any mod installation. Some work smoothly via Vortex, others need manual zip extraction into specific folders, extra options in the Steam launcher, and scripts to be executed, but it's no big deal. The native support however, and the connection of the vest to PC, phone, and Quest 2 is about as smooth as it can be. No troubles at all there.
Overall, the feeling of getting shot is slightly underwhelming, because it's just not a shot, it's a vibration. It's nice that you can tell where you have been shot from, but that's really more of a cool advantage than pulling you more into the game. What was way better than I expected was everything else:
Half Life Alyx (via mod)
You can feel the gun recoil in your shoulder, especially the shotgun. You can feel mags sliding down and up your backback, healing will give you a nice rumble through the entire body, explosions will make you shake, and most importantly: When you are low on health, you can feel your heart beating and starting to pick up pace. Man, that gives even more tension to the situation, I found my own heart racing along with Alyx', that was a real trip. This is a very immersive game to begin with, and this really sent it through the roof. I don't know if I will dare to load the Jeff chapter...
Skyrim VR (via mod)
When you "shout", you can feel the buildup in your belly and exit through your chest. You can feel sword slashes and drop damage from a cliff. I searched for a dragon but did not find one quickly, that was a shame, it might be an even cooler experience.
[...continued...]
Fallout 4 VR (via mod)
I only started this game, never played it, I'm not sure if it's my cup of tea yet. But the haptics feel very similar to Skyrim so far.
Boneworks (via mod)
Works pretty well. I like that you can hit yourself on the body with stuff and you'll feel it. Climbing sensations are pretty cool. Recoil when shooting and also hitting boxes. Heartbeat as well. I think if this is an immersive game for you, it will feel similar to Half Life Alyx, but I can't really get deep into the game.
What makes it better? It's higher res than Index iirc but lower refresh rate, so trade-off I suppose ๐คท
Oh and OLED so that's cool but again, trade-off
In Death Unchained (native)
It's... good. You can feel your heartbeat, you feel your chest shiver if you pull arrows really hard. If you are hit, you will feel the arrow enter and exit (!) your body. You feel slashes. Coolest thing were the rumbles when you blocked bigger knights with your shield.
Synth Riders (native)
Yeah. This is not necessary. It just rumbles a bit.
Imo OLED is superior to LCD in all but burn-in, which isn't really a concern in VR.
Besides that, the Vive Pro 1 is way better balanced, making it much more comfortable for longer sessions
Will try some more games, and some sound-to-haptics profiles. But so far, this has been pretty cool. About as effective as getting an amazing graphics card or headset for better immersion, and a similar price. So it's not necessary at all, but pretty fun.
VP1 and Index have exactly the same resolution. One thing that the VP1 has, which the Index doesn't is the ability to go wireless with the oh so expensive Vive Wireless Adapter. Imo the best way to play VR wireless
Besides, if cable, OLED and long session comfort isn't that important to you, the Vive Pro 2 offeres a wider FOV then the Index (at the cost of a little bit of HFOV, not too noticable imo) and a higher resolution. Plus it's screen calibration looks much more refined then the washed out image the Index produces...
I'm not saying HTC is doing everything right here though. Heat is a genuine concern with the Pro 2, and the fact that they are still using the same, pop-filter-less mic as with the original Vive is more then an insult at this point. I can understand why they continue to hold onto the Wands (cause businesses like their legacy software), but not even reducing the prise on those? Like come on, the Index controllers are cheaper and better then your wands...
Very cool ๐
God damn for boneworks it would be bonkers
One day helpfully I'll get one
Custom guns for boneworks don't the look gorgeous
Hey so my friend ram the steam VR performance test on his laptop and he got the results capable will he still be able to run some games or no? And when I looked at is gpu it looks like itโs integrated into the cpu
That integrated gpu isnโt very inspiring
Not very well to say the least
Yeah I donโt think itโs dedicated
It's not
At that it's slow integrated graphics
Yall know of a way to overclock the quest 2?
I would put this in overclocking but there is no way any of them know
Btw I am aware of cpu and gpu level 4 but I want to go further
What's cpu and gpu level 4 ?
The quest 2 is underclocked from factory because of the lack of cooling
Via ADB console, you can pump up the resolution some more. But I don't think actual overclocking is as easy as it sounds, since the Quest has not been hacked yet... And I doubt there are adb commands for that.
Idk if there's an algorithm that runs the clock higher if it's cooler
I doubt it boosts
I mean, it might be fun to try. But honestly, the fan spinning up and taking me out of the immersive VR game is not worth the 2 more fps you get imo...
Depends on game
Maybe it'll make it more immersive
I turn up resolution frequently but I find even at normal res some beatsaber maps still lag from sheer notes and copius amounts of walls
But i think that at peak load the voltage is stable let's say 1v 25 w since you certainly can't change it , if your chip runs cooler it will use less power and be more efficient, so i think there's a 1% maybe to get with a better cooling
Take the cover and uga duga a cooling with an heatsink+ thermal pads
I know that snapdragons 8xx series (base architecture of the xr2 as far as i know) can be overclocked if the phone is rooted but i don't think you will be able to do so on the quest 2
Never saw any problem like that. Are you running at 120Hz? But afaik Beat Saber does not yet, only 90Hz, and that works fine for me unless apps are updating in the background...
Wouldn't recommend modding it tho
Modded beatsaber
It's to be expected tbh but it's just unfun when the map by itself is really good
Ah, there's your problem. ๐ I agree that the best option for overclocking might be hardware, not software right now. Which is finicky to say the least, with some new thermal pads or fans...
Fans ? I don't think you could find some that fit the stock enclosure
Have you ever run Beat Saber on PCVR via Virtual Desktop/Airlink? I am thinking about that, just for easier modding and to get away from Oculus standalone apps. But I don't wanna spend 30 bucks to find out that the lag is unbearable...
I also just enjoy overclocking si it would've been fun if possible
I have tried on a friends pc but the situation was less than ideal
And my pc is far from being vr capable
Minecraft vr can't even start
That fan is tiny-whiney! Honestly, looking at that second image, I am sure somebody has already created a 3D printable air tunnel and cover replacement with more vents to allow for a larger (albeit flat) fan.
No
I don't think
I looked at it a month or two ago there was nothing
Just looked
Nothing about it
Nope, found several models for fan ducts though that will channel air into the facial interface, to avoid heat and steam buildup. Fun idea, maybe I should try that.
I think the quest pro will have a better cooling thus not underclocked cpu/gpu it received a lot of backlash back in the time of the release
Ho yeah but none for better cooling
But I didn't have huge moisture problem so far, and I think making the headset bulkier and more complicated is not the way to go for me.
I do have problems with it when I put it on
But after 10 pins i just wipe it of the lenses and good to go
Cz it's heated up
Honestly, I feel like the Quest Pro is going in the wrong direction for me personally. The way it looks, it will focus on face and eye tracking, on color passthrough, on detecting people entering your playspace. I need none of that, I particularly dislike Facebook tracking my eyes and face in addition to movement. I would rather have the OLED panels back, and some better audio or non-lagging bluetooth for headphones etc.
Nah eye tracking is could be good but not on a quest 3 but on the pro yes, color pass thru why not ? And yes oled was good ...
Audio is quite good could be better
Audio by the way for the bhaptics vest: The motors are fairly loud! So without earplugs, those will actually be distracting. I was very happy that I had my cheap ear plugs to dampen the rattle to some degree.
Eye and face tracking is awesome for VR conferences and meetings (which I guess the "Pro" is shooting for), and colour passthrough for AR. It could be very cool for VRChat. But I use none of those things, so it's really not the upgrade for me. Also, I don't need an upgrade yet, pretty happy with what I got.
It's not that much of a problem for me
I play in loud room
Wouldn't really hear them
Oh man, you have no idea, you will definitely hear them. Maybe I'll do some more recording. That last take was when the battery had already run out, I was just still wearing the vest because I was mid-game and the camera was still running.
Will try some audio-to-haptics profiles today.
With beat saber it could be very cool
I lack this apparently looking at Boneworks logs
Vertex lit/ shaders /shadows/ textures mesh
I mean if anyone knows ?
Help would be appreciated
Yeah... I tried that one yesterday evening. It's fun because it rumbles your belly with bass and will shake some with the song rhythm. But it doesn't really add "immersion" and you are wearing a heavy vest on your upper body, so I didn't think the experience was any better than without. So far, the most surprising effects were really the additional immersion in good story-driven games, not the fun gimmicks in wave shooters or rhythm games. Just like with Synth Riders (which is supported natively).
But i think a vest rn isn't the best
If it existed
A strap that you would put around your torso would be perfect with 4-5 motors would be way better
I think it would be lighter and cheaper too
Probably, yes. I just noticed that there is an official Mod for the PCVR version of Beat Saber, not just audio-to-haptics. That might work better. But again, it's not that much of an additional value to me in rhythm games. I mean, it's cool to feel the bass, and I'll gladly take it as an extra feature. The experience is just not worth spending money on, I think.
The mod is paid ?
No, but I only own Beat Saber for the Quest natively. So I would have to buy Beat Saber for PC in addition. ๐ But what I meant is: You probably shouldn't buy haptic feedback gear for rhythm games, the additional experience is nice but no break-through. It's awesome for immersion in story or physics based games, if you are into that, then haptics is "more worth it", still expensive, but yeah...
If you get in BW any time
You should try to run elbow side into a wall
With haptics you can fell it bump
So cool
I think the biggest consumer application of haptic vests for consumer use are for more immersion in games like HLA and VRC...
Oh yeah, having tried it now for a while, I absolutely agree.
The audio-to-haptics profiles also work surprisingly well. I just played some Asgard's Wrath, which obviously doesn't get support because mods for Oculus are rarely a thing, and the Oculus PCVR development is dead. But mapping the bassy rumbles to vibrate in your back and front belly and the frequency of sword slashes to your chest works like a charm. I even added some screeching/wind noises to give a mild tingle to the upper back. It's certainly not perfect, but I actually don't wanna play the game without the vest anymore.
Heh... Reminds me somewhat of how the Skullcandy Crushers work. They are a pair of headphones using linear actuators to "enhance bass". Makes actually sense if you think about it. Especially the very low frequencies we feel more rather then hearing them
Yeah. Ages ago, I played drums in a jazz band, and on one stage, they had a "rumbler" installed on the pedestal where the drummer's chair was placed. Then they just pitched down the bass guitar signal so the drummer could "feel" the bass as vibrations and be better in sync. That was kinda cool...
How vr ready will I be with a ryzen 5 5600 and a RTX 3060ti?
It's the setup in planning to build
Sounds pretty good, it will surely be able to handle all current VR games at decent frame rates and resolutions.
Nice! Thank you
I mean, 3-4 years down the line, who knows what titles and crazy resolutions there will be, but right now, this is pretty good. I have a very similar setup.
It will be my first build and I really want it to be vr ready
Yeah sounds great
I don't think most of the games I want to play so far will be very demanding to be honest
I hope you can get the 3060 TI at reasonable prices!
Right now I'm playing standalone quest 2 and it's pretty cool, can't imagine on pc
Local store usually has them around 550 euros?
That's around 650 dollars
It's not good at all, but in these times...
Well, it mostly depends on the optimization. Half Life Alyx (the most real triple A title around) runs awesomely on this hardware because it's well optimized. But Mincraft VR will make the GPU sweat, no idea why. It's still run good enough though.
Doesn't actually sound too bad, especially in these times. Also euro-zone here, by the way, as you can tell by my exceptionally German name. ๐
Minecraft Java runs like crap in 90% of computers without vr anyways haha
Nice! I'm in Spain
Exactly, so you get it.
Yeah I have yet to have a decent Minecraft experience
Love it! Not able to travel there right now, but it's an amazing country.
I've been playing on console all this time because every single pc I've had runs it horrible
Thank you! I really love Germany too. I've only been there once but hope to visit again soon
Out of curiosity, what headset do you use?
I have a Quest 2 that I got from my colleague, mostly use it for PCVR via wireless streaming now.
It's a real bargain, great value, but you'll have to swallow the Facebook login.
I think my quest 2 has glare problems but they are not that noticeable
To be fair I haven't tried any other quest 2 so I'm not sure if it's normal
I do occasionally get some glare. It helps to minimize the light leak and clean the glasses with a microfiber cloth, but you can certainly get some internal glaring. If you want to, you can try if you can capture it with a phone picture and people in here can compare if it looks similar or if you should get it replaced.
Righto, will do
Do you think it would be worth upgrading to the Index? The resolution is lower
I don't think I'm going to buy it since it's pretty expensive but I'm curious about it
I thought about the same thing. But you can't really expect that huge a jump in quality. The tracking is only minimally better, but you can only play in one spot with the lighthouses, and the compression artefacts won't be there. I don't think you'll notice a difference in resolution. You will however lose the wireless option, which for me is pretty awesome. And you might spend like 50 euros on a Wifi 6 router specifically for your Quest 2, which will significantly reduce the wireless streaming artefacts, that's money much better spent.
The one reason for me I am even considering an Index is Facebook. But that's everybody's decision to make. I don't think it's worth a grand for me, since this is the only way they collect my data, and I am fairly transparent online anyways (I am old).
Righto, that makes sense
Consider this: I just spent almost 600 euros for a bhaptics tactsuit for better immersion. Which means that I could probably afford the Index set. But I still would rather go this route... That's my opinion in a pinch.
Oh yes. I also loved some cheap 20โฌ earplugs. But that's a matter of taste, it just drowns out the surroundings more, that might a good or a bad thing.
Sure, there are a handfull of really active and nice and helpful people in this channel, stop by anytime you have questions.
Has anyone here ever captured video on the Quest 2, and knows a few cool tricks? There are mostly two problems I have:
-
The standard resolution does not make sense. It's not horribly low res, but it has a square aspect ratio, which sucks for video editing in 16:9 afterwards and for vertical phone display, I have no idea what they were thinking. There are ADB commands with which you can change the resolution and ratio to whatever you want, I know. But is there an easy way that will either make the Quest remember them instead of losing the setting at every reboot, or doing this in-headset with a SideQuest app or something?
-
The audio is drifting. I think this is most likely because the audio sample rate is fixed while the frame rate is variable and adjusts to whatever amount of frames the headset is currently pushing (well, it looks more like exactly every third frame or something), and the background recording on an underclocked XR2 chip can't handle the stream muxing properly. Does anybody know if there is an easy way to prevent this problem in the first place? I know how to fix it in post, but this can't be how all the VR content creators do it all the time???
I think that they capture via a cable to there pc
I had the sound drift issue too
Tho you can use obs for everything on your pc, i actually made one yesterday and it looks so crisp, I'd you wanna see it https://youtu.be/aozSpvOq5WA
Shows two modded gun ...
Well, the PCVR games they certainly capture on the PC, but I have seens tons of native Quest recordings where there is no cable attached to the real world recorded image. I am just curious, this can't be an issue for everybody...
Maybe they use something wireless
Has been for me, i am sorry I can't help
Oh, right, you can stream Quest content to Chromecasts and phones and even PC browsers! That's probably the easiest way now! Good catch!
I know i use this feature to show my friend while i play vr with them...
Also you can use this to guide people on their first times playing
And you can even launch games
Yes, I have also used that. It's not the greatest compression, but it's 16:9 aspect and no audio issue, you can just capture it.
I guess it's the best way for quick recording.
I know OBS. Never really used it for game recording, but I'm sure it works brilliantly. I just thought I'd do a very quick capture without leaving the headset and was flabbergasted by the atrocious settings the Quest pushes on you...
And it has nothing to do with p**n. We promise. ๐คฃ
I mean, it's a big industry, I am not surprised that VR is moving into it.
I never tried some in vr tbh
I wonder if it will be the first hmd on the market with varifocal lenses
Basic model: around 700USD , Full set: around 1100USD, Varifocal lens supported version: 3900USD
Possibly, I am guessing the Index 2 is still a bit down the road, and I don't think the Quest Pro will be there yet.
look how much it jacks the price however
Understandably though. Those lenses are more premium level and spear tip tech than anything else they offer.
It's the same as getting a 3090. Sure, some people can afford it, and it might actually be helpful for them. But it's not meant for the masses.
Certainly not, it's just "the future", at least part of the future. I didn't give anything about VR 15 years ago, everything was expensive, clunky, and hardly supported. But I do think that varifocal lenses is something that the industry will be moving towards. I won't get bleeding edge technology, but it's cool to watch what companies do and where they go.
Afaik the Quest just captures whatever is rendered for one eye to reduce the load. As the rendered image is roughly square, it just takes that, scales it down to a res that it can easily encode and save that. All for performance reasons.
Even PCs aren't immune to this. Unless the game has specific support for a third camera for the desktop mirror (like BeatSaber), there's a good chance it's just a cropped version of what one of your eyes sees. For my streams I usually just take the output of each eye from SteamVR, crop them and merge them to increase the seen FOV on stream. It does mean there's like a section where things often don't line up (due to the different perspectives), but it's not too noticable...
Oh man. That was utterly epic!
I just fought my first god vs. god end battle in Asgard's Wrath (there are like 3 of those overall, I think). And I only just had installed the audio-to-haptics profile for my haptics vest for this game. So I was rumbling all over my body from explosions and felt the huge leg stomps in my belly. That is a great scene as it is, and one of the very best examples of what a haptics suit helps improve. I am shook.
woo
woo
how's the b- bhaptics? bapthics? whatev. how's the whatever vest? @thick escarp
woo
crouton
bruh DHL is taking so long
I ordered a CD, shipped from Orly, in France, then went to Leipzig in Germany, and now it's on hold in East Midlands, UK... (I'm in Canada lmfao)
frl
I don't get it tho lol why isnt it just taking a fucking plane to Canada directly
It's just a CD from la FNAC
I live in the norheast US and was recieving a package from maryland which is on the east coast less than 160 kilometers from me
And I was confused when I checked on the shipping progress and it was in austin texas
@coarse birch The vest is pretty awesome! I wrote down some impressions in the post I am replying to here. ๐
ooo thanks!
LOL. Me I'm so stupid hahaha I'm waiting for two CompTIA A+ books that I had to order on Amazon US and not Canada. I got confused when it said "Shipped from: Ontario, CA US" but at first I didn't see the "US" lmfaooo so I was like "Why the fuck is my package in Rockford, Illinois now"
Then I realized it wasn't Ontario Canada
I'm sooo stupid
Yeah, that naming is really confusing. ๐คฃ
yeah, especially with the "Ontario CA" like bruh
What software would you use gloves or a vest with?
Are there games that are compatible with them?
It depends on the gear. Mine is from "bhaptics". There is native support by several PCVR games (often via a mod) and quite a few Quest games. You can connect the vest via Bluetooth (a dongle for PC is included if you don't have a Bluetooth motherboard), and the mod or game itself will just send the information to the vest/gloves, where to vibrate...
If the game is not supported, or for music, flat screen games, and movies, you can connect an audio cable to the vest (split off from your headphones), and load an audio-to-haptics profile. Those are fairly simple, usually "slash frequency -> vibrate chest", "gunshot frequency -> right shoulder", "explosion frequency -> rumble all over". But it works okay.
That's wild
And slightly scary
@haughty thistle did you ever pair vive trackers to your pimax?
I just asked in a YouTube comment, when I realized that this channel here is probably gonna be much more knowledgeable, let alone friendly. Duh.
In the Steam version of Beat Saber, is it possible to have custom songs and multiplayer at the same time? Because that would be worth purchasing it a second time for me. On the Quest standalone version, multiplayer is disabled as soon as you mod it for custom songs. ๐ฉ
Never actually tried out multiplayer
Each player would obviously need the same custom song downloaded for it to work
Assuming it does support custom songs
If any platform allows it though it'll be steam over oculus
Multiplayer custom content exists in other games it just forces you to download necessary maps/etc upon joining a game
I don't need to play custom songs with others, that would just be the cherry on top. I would be happy trying the stock songs in multiplayer! But I won't get rid of my custom songs mod, so all multiplayer is blocked.
Sorry, but what were you referring to?
@thick escarp getting rid of the custom songs mod won't get rid of your library
The pimax hmd can have devices paired to it
I think that's how my controllers work?
So I was wondering if vive trackers could be paired too
Unless I am misunderstanding how this all works
Yes, how so? I've had my Index controller paired to it, as the Vive tracker all come with little nubbins to connect to. Unlike the Vive Tracker dongles and the 2 dongles build into each lighthouse tracked Vive and the Index, the ones on the Pimax are locked down and can only get set into pairing mode by PiTool. They are also only active while PiTool is running, whereas I could use my Index as a connection point for my Index controllers while using my Reverb G2 (which has none of these dongles)
Vive Trackers come with dedicated USB receivers
I'd guess pairing Vive Trackers to the Pimax should work like pairing your controllers. Just be aware that only 2 devices can be paired to a Pimax at a time.
Now that I think about it, a friend of mine actually has two of their trackers paired to their Artisan, as the Index controllers were kinda juttering around when paired to their Pimax...
I got my pitool to show 2 controllers and 3 trackers lit up
But I needed to have all 3 dongles plugged into the PC
I thought maybe I'd be saving USB ports
At least it's just generic USB C
Nope. Each dongle only supports one device at a time. The headset just happens to have 2 dongles built in. If you really wanna have one dongle and everything connected to it, you'd want one of those Tundra SW-Dongles (or Dongle McDongleface as their internal name is). I've ordered an SW-5 dongle with my set of Tundra Trackers, so I can not just pair my Trackers but also my controllers to it.
Nice
Maybe at some point I'll get a sw
I have enough USB ports for this so I should be fine for now
Btw. The information which device is paired to which dongle is saved on the device itself. This means you can have for example have a pair of Index controllers and a pair of Vive wands paired to a headset, and when you turn off the one pair and then turn on the other pair, they'll connect anyways. The device however can't remember multiple dongles, so if you switch between multiple headsets (which I kinda do), you'd have to pair them again after switching the headset
Can't wait for my Tundra Trackers, more because of the dongle really xD
Think they'll be publicly available for purchase this year?
Depends on how quickly they get through Kickstarter fulfilment...
There was an update on their page recently
It didn't seem like things were moving quickly which is why I decided to just pick up some 3.0s
Most backers already have gotten their "virtual basket" to pay for shipping as well as giving their adress, but apparently there were issues with the European baskets, so I'll be (hopefully) getting mine tomorrow ๐ค
Baskets?
Basically, the prices that were in the Kickstarters were without taxes and shipping (as they didn't had an estimate back then), and once they had the estimate, half way through the campain, they offered every backer a stay or leave with the estimate
Geez kickstarters are messy
They are basically providing a webstore with a shopping cart and a discount on what was payed during the Kickstarter by the backer. European backings are fulfilled by UnboundVR (thankfully a European company, not like with Pimax), and they had some technical difficulties getting the mails out, so those were a bit delayed...
At least Tundra is trying to keep costs low for everyone. I wouldn't wanna pay 50$ international shipping, just because they also offer to ship all the way to South Africa or something...
any beat saber song recommendations
Hello all,
My current of is an i7 3770 with a GTX1060 6Gb
I would like to have a VR system (mainly for Elite dangerous) and I was wondering if my PC could handle a VR headset (tethered).
Also I think the Rift S since he is discon could be a good price / performance if found on the second hand market.
What do you think ?
The SteamVR Performance Test measures your system's rendering power using a 2-minute sequence from Valves Aperture Robot Repair VR demo. After collecting the data it determines whether your system is capable of running VR content at 90fps and whether VR content can tune the visual fidelity up to the recommended level. For machines that are not V...
i know XD and budget should be available at around 2023 first quarter
if my saving calculation are right
which also will be when AM5 is available ๐
Getting a 6600xt will have you well off
yeah but I only have a 450w psu ... so i will need to upgrade that one too
my expectation is for 2023 buying a new PC with the equivalent in grade (rank not perf) or a ryzen 5 5600 + RTX 3060ti (with also new PSU, SSD and so on)
Not sure I got 3700x and 2060 well under 450
and for the moment I have tried VR with an Oculus GO and ALVR system to have my steam game (Elite dangerous) on the headset. it work fine but the quality isn't there ...
Thats an oculus go
Not the best ๐
Lol
Impressed it even works actually
They are only made to watch youtube or whatever
Yesterday bug were funny, one eye didn't move in boneworks
yeah but it is what I have XD
Left could turn but the right was static, i could see things moving tho
My boneworks is fucked up actually
Need a reinstall
buying a quest 2 could be a solution at the moment if it wasn't facebrook
Messed too much with it
๐ณ
Personally i don't care
It's literally the only headset i can get under 1000
The quest 2 pro having face and eye tracking freaks me out a little though
for the same price I can have a Rift S ... (used but still in good shape)
Yep
For me wireless is the only option
Once you tried
Like using a horse after trying a motorbike
the game I play is seated only so having a cable doesn't bother me at the moment
What will you play?
elite dangerous (space sim)

since I don't own a real VR headset I haven't bought VR games XD
only games which also happen to have a VR option
Not vr 100% need a controller like a xbox one
yeah
Yeah but after any ideas what you wanna play
mainly flight sim i think ...
Racing sims ?
i would love to try alix but since no VR headset I haven't bought it
ACC dirt project car ?
When you'll have one but it it's prieced a but high but definitely worth it
And get boneworks son
also one game I would like to try is "lone echo" ... i saw "The mighty jingle" stream and wow ....
what kind of VR headset should I think about ? Valve index ? Oculus Rift S ? Oculus Quest 2 with the battery pack ? (Also I need glasses ... )
The thing is expensive headsets wich budget pc aren't useful
I am not knowledgeable enough to help you
Sorry
But stay around other people are
indeed
Everyone here is nice you'll get an answer
using ALVR ?
Airlink @wooden ember
if you can give ALVR a try ๐
great ๐
And it's free too
i may see if I can find someone who have a quest2 to test
40us for 3 day rental XD
the quest 2 there is a rental service in Japan ...
not stupid indeed but the problem is how easily can you reset an oculus quest 2 and remove the linked account ?
Ho yeah idk actually
My colleague did that. You can easily reset it and remove all your data from the headset. You will however still have an Oculus account afterwards linked to Facebook. He kept is, and Facebook probably kept some of the data he provided. But in theory, with the GDPR active in Europe, all companies that have data here (which Facebook does) will have to provide the users an option to delete everything they have on them. So I think you should be okay if you want that. But that second part I only theorize about, I have not deleted my Oculus account and probably won't ever. ๐
I think more than a decent PC to play some PCVR games with the Oculus Quest 2, I would recommend a good wireless router, ideally Wifi 6 with not too many other clients connected to it. I mean, a good GPU helps to get better quality, so I'm not saying it's not important. I just think that if you connection is really laggy, the experience will be much worse. If the VR world lags behind your movements, gaming is no fun and you get sick more easily.
being in Japan GDPR is not applicable ... I used to be in France so idk if my account is a french one or japanese one since I have changed my address ....
So, generally: Definitely not the Rift. It's worse than all other headsets in almost all ways, and Oculus basically cancelled their PCVR branch. If you don't have a problem selling your soul to Facebook (this sounds harsh, I totally did that, for context, currently sporting a Quest 2), then the Quest 2 is a great offer. But beware that in about a month, there will be a big showcase where Oculus will most likely present some new hardware. This might be a more expensive Quest Pro, or a new model of the Quest 2 (which I don't think), but in any case, there might be something new and cool there, or the Quest 2 will get a small update without costing more, or the Quest 2 might go down in price a little. If you can wait one month, I think that's worth it.
The Index is very cool, but if your PC is not a beast but rather "only just able" to play VR, you might not get your money's worth out of the extra image clarity it provides.
In any case, Facebook (and probably Oculus) provides this GDPR compliance all over the world, they don't make an exception for Europe. It's probably not worth the effort.
Yes, sensors (so you can only play it in one spot), and a cable to your PC. I love the wireless experience.
are the sensores wired ? or wireless ?
They are wired. You can probably google some images, the things are called "lighthouses" for the Index.
ok they are wireless AC powered it seem
Yes, it's only power cables, but those are necessary.
i may think about it .. my room is kinda crowded for a full free VR exp ....
Rift is worse in almost every way compared to modern ones
I'd like to differ. The CV1 Touch controllers are imo the most comfortable VR controllers ever made. Very well balanced, look good and just got well in the hand (it's as if they were made for Humans)
Same applies to the CV1 HMD. It's pretty comfortable and very lightweight.
Just the cable routing and the way the headstrap works means you'll be putting excessive stress on the cable Everytime you put on or off the headset.
I wouldn't really recommend it as an entry-level as the Quest 2 is probably a better buy (albeit a bit more expensive when properly kitted out)
The lenses and screens are probably the worst part of the CV1. Facebook on all their OLED HMDs is using a modified gamma curve to prevent black-level smearing from happening, but the result is that extremely dark scenes look like, as if you're staring at an LCD with quite some backlight bleed (only full black is actually black from my experience)
The lenses are also worse then the original Vive ones from my experience with having a lot more glare (although more as natural glare on the CV1, rather then the glare rings of the Vive)
The cheapest way to avoided Facebook in VR is either by getting a used WMR headset (definitely worse then the Quest 2, but a lot cheaper) or by getting a used Vive (cheapest entry-way into the lighthouse eco-system)

i will check the second hand market
Yep, if you want to avoid Facebook but not spend a lot, used market is a pretty good idea.
While it is certainly possible that the Rift is very comfortable to wear (I never had one on my head or the controllers in hand, was mostly focused on the specs), I am sure @haughty thistle will agree that buying a Rift right now is not a good idea. It is an old headset that is not supported in hardware or software updates anymore. And it's not like now you can make a new Oculus account for your Rift without Facebook, so you are not even dodging a bullet there... ๐ฆ
But I very much have to agree that comfort is not to be understated. It's much rougher to wear a giant thing on your face for hours than what you might call "normal gaming". ๐
I already have an Oculus account (dev one) since I have the Go and side load app on it
