Finally ads on my face
Samshit will beat zuckerberg to it
Samsung mfs will be like ah yes ads on my phone, ads on my watch, ads on my washing machine, ads on my fridge, ads on my TV, ads directly in my eyeballs
In other news, jesus christ more trademarks are popping up
I keep crashing when getting in vr, I do get processor error in event logs but still, its a new cpu
Maybe better for a tech support thread but need way more info, what was the error and how'd you try to launch good places to start, (hardware details, also make sure error log corresponds to crash and can recreate it consistently or not)
Usual suspects would be update hmd firmware and GPU drivers or check for compatibility updates from mainboard support page for bios downloads
which headset
quest 2, but its new, I had an old headset and then a freiend gave me one of his which he claims has been used meuch
hardeware is new except mobo, and that error shows when crahses
also this has all been done
What error details, CPU model and mainboard may help too to check for potential compatibility issues, also helpful to include info on if using wired or wireless (air link, steam link, virtual desktop or otherwise how connected and attempting to launch)
Can't say I've seen the VR headset itself crash my machine really, games crash here or there or unreal engine not the most stable thing ever but for playing games can't say I've seen it crash my PC yet directly. Maybe if using xmp or expo or other memory speed ups turn them off temporarily to see if any difference
Oh also helpful to know if you have tried different titles/games or streaming mechanisms (again steam link vs Meta quest wired etc) just to be sure is same error regardless of actual app or encoding/streaming service
What the hell is up with the controller
Everyone is trying to copy Quest. Not because those are good controllers, but because it's the most sold...
It looks ugly and weird
I mean
No one will see my controllers in vr
But its eh...
Yeah theya re "Quest" like controllers apparently
Is that samsungs thing
Bro why does my brand new index not work correctly
what does brand new mean
valve doesn't sell it anymore it's out of production
.. just the headset?
well they stopped selling the whole kit i know
Yeah and?
For a while now
did you get just the headset?
do you have the base stations?
Yes as long as you have base station and steamvr compatible
If you pair with inside out devices you may have to calibrate
I do have the rest yes
I have the 1.0 stations
I Guess built in AC!!
Pretty sure there is at least 1 strap for the quest 3 that has a build in fan to keep things cool
headset new, but why is there artifacting when i use it connected to my pc
or weird lines in side the screen of the headset, it happens after one or two hours of use.
nobody here knows how to describe a problem smh
When it's a new thing that you've never heard of or seen before, yeah, kinda hard.
you didn't even mention what hardware you have
Ok, so quest 2 is what I'm using, and if you're referring to the PC, it's a ryzen 7 5800xt with 32gb ram and a Rx 6800
Using a link cable
Oh now that is different
Does artifact look like stream quality issue or dying GPU issue
It's a new gpu, can't be dying.
Or 6 months old, but still.
Could motherboard affect this?
I believe it's encoding issue
Or streaming issue
Because playing via Link requires the GPU to compress video before sending the video i think the compressing part was done poorly or your cable bandwidth is too low
Is the artifact consistent? Do you only see it in specific game and world?
Yes it's consistent
seems your gpu is not encoding properly
did you uncap bandwidth
make sure its on usb 3.0
It is on USB 3.0, but how would I check bandwidth
Actually just use test bandwidth
Restarting pc and headset and ensuring it is updated should fix it but if not
You may have to dig into oculus debug tool settings
AMD GPU runs best on HEVC/H.265 encoding
Man I was really hoping that upgrading my system to Win11 would help me have LESS issues, but since upgrading, it's now started hard restarting the entire system whenever I play beat saber đ I really wish event viewer were actually useful for telling me what the heck is going on instead of random gibberish. Like, is it thermals? Software/driver issue? Hardware/gpu issue? near impossible to know because no user troubleshooting utilities I've ever used have actually helped me solve problems.
If it does end up being a thermal issue I'm gonna be so angry. I recently had to uninstall the software I have been using for controlling fan profiles for the longest time due to Microsoft updating some stuff and causing Windows Defender to forevermore attack that software as if it were a virus. It was really useful because you would make a fan curve graph, and then you could set it so that the input temperature for the graph would always be whichever is the hottest between your CPU and GPU, that way whichever one is running hotter would be recognized as the basis for the curve graph. Now, I pretty much only have L-Connect, which only lets me set a curve using either the CPU or GPU, so if one or the other is overheating while the curve is set based on whichever one ISN'T overheating, it can very easily cause issues. Except there's no way to know in the moment whether either one is overheating because I don't have any way to see the temps while playing and HWInfo and HWMonitor will both fail to output a log record if the computer restarts while you're logging : ] next best thing would be to set up my phone on a tripod recording the screen so I know what my temps are while playing but I just KNOW I would totally smack said tripod with a controller and break something in the process if I did that.
A hard reset without Windows Bluescreening or visually shutting down is usually an indicator for powerfailure (PSU pulled power briefly either as it's failing or protection circuitry kicking in)
Tho I rarely hear from people having that on their PC, it's a more common issue on phones as the battery ages and the system doesn't reduce it's powerdraw/slows down the processor to account for the old battery...
Samsung severely underestimated how many people need controller for gaming
My PSU is a 1000w gold unit from corsair so I'd be surprised if it's failing, it is only in the B+ tier on the psu tier list tho, which is technically less than what's recommended for my GPU. I also have a UPS going so it's not a wall power issue. I'm gonna try playing some other stuff later to see if it only happens in beatsaber. I distinctly remember that I have played other games since reinstalling but it's only hard crashed like that during beatsaber so I'll try stressing it in some other games to see if it has the same result.
I'll test this later after work
how would I do this?
Describes how to use the Oculus Debug Tool (ODT).
Can't guarantee it will be better
Try other options before this
Gotcha I'll see, ty
You could also try OculusKiller to reduce performance penalty from oculus dashboard running in the background https://github.com/BnuuySolutions/OculusKiller
It's still odd that I'd need a program like this bc this hasn't happened in a long time I had my PC for a few years
Its just crappy design that when you use Oculus app on PC it runs huge program in background while you play SteamVR but you don't have to
It doesn't fix a breaking issue
It just force it to stop unnecessary intensive process
That would be nice
Bc it works fine for 30 min then starts to pixelate the screen and bars of pixels pop up, I wish I could show what I mean, but it's on the VR screen sadly.
You can shove your phone camera up against the lens
I mean yeah, but it'll be hard to show exactly and with no face against the headset, it may shut off.
you can either turn the sensor off for a couple hours with sidequest, or put a piece of tape over it so it always detects you're present
Im just surprised people use quest link when steamlink, virtualdesktop and alvr exist. Like I completely uninstalled the app after I switched from the rift S to a quest 2
ASW always felt horrible to me. Dash and keyboard were good but so is OVR Toolkit
virtual desktop is a godsend
especially if you are using it with with the vd relay server
that is the only way i have ever had a vr experience better than index
They are using cable im not up to date if others support it
ALVR is very good too. I have had fewer issues iirc using ALVR than VD, but then again, Linux vs Windows, so that will explain why I had fewer issues. (I did only switch VR over to Linux about 8 months or so ago, didnât know ALVR existed, thus had (unnecessarily) a Windows install just for that)
Used pretty much just steam link before I switched to WiVRn on linux
I'll probably switch back once they update, just gotta see. Never bought VD
WiVRn is also really nice. Just felt better with ALVR in Beat Saber. Gotta try ALVR with cable tho at some point
quest link and alvr both have native wired support (by native i mean not using reverse tethering). you can technically use steamlink and vd over a usb cable, but its much less stable and YMMV
WiVRn also supports wired (and on master it also supports sending uncompressed image data if you are wired, comparable to a displayport connection but still having the same latency of USB)
are there any like weird things that don't support the 1.0 htc lighhouses? I know I can't run any of my current 2016 vive stuff on the 2.0's but I can wait to upgrade those untill last right?
im slowly upgrading my stuff now because it is starting to die
from what ive heard, 1.0 lighthouses support everything
its only 2.0s that have issues with early htc vive gear
what I heard to but I veagly remember like 1 or 2 things not working with them tho but I can't find anything so I may be crazy lol
Hey I have a question about face tracking headsets and whether itâs still worth getting and whatâs best to get ?
bigscreen beyond 2 with the face tracking package
Okay
you would still need a face tracker, also only bigscreen beyond 2e has eye tracking
@grand cedar read message above
Oh this?
well everyoneâs says no matter what headset to pair babble with it and at least the mout tracking will be amazing
But I wanted a headset that has either straight ft or et
People told me the vive pro eye and quest pro are just generally the best headsets for ft
But they have their differences one has eyebrow tracking and one has eye pupilation or something
Before considering face tracking what do you intend to use it for
If it is for vrchat make sure your avatar have vrcft mouth blends
Project babble is probably best value you can buy and they are open source and keeps improving (thanks Summer)
Hello, how are you all?

Oui
Fire up those copium generators, another big tech publication just ran an article based on completely unfounded information reporting that we'll be getting info on Valve's next headset within the week đ„Ž
It's either a Steam Deck for your TV or something else entirely. At this point I just wanna see those overdosing on copium to be overly disappointed
Too many talking about it im afraid you guys are SCARING Valve from releasing it
Assuming if it is real they will delay it because of it
Too many people are quote tweeting valvesoftware
But i bet on nothing and we all just thought something will happen
Valve loves surprising Fans with any of their announcements. With how much people are talking about this, they know it won't be a surprise, and as you said Menaced they might postpone or cancel the release if it wont be a surprise...
And as usual valve twitter's biggest grifter is right on it
Always bet on nothing
It's plausible
But at the same time, from my perspective at least, there is absolutely no way Valve won't ship a headset without a top strap
eeeh
i think the solo strap is a valid concept, apple just did it poorly
the battery may be enough to make a good counterweight
The headset's gotta be lightweight, I think
That's fair, too
what doesn't convince me about this picture is the lack of big cameras
like this is supposed to do the vision pro thing where it projects windows (frames) in your irl environment
tbf vision pro also doesn't have them but like..
apple R&D budget isn't exactly valve R&D budget
the komodo station website has a steam machine page
Apparently the source for this was Komodo's website https://www.rxddit.com/r/ValveDeckard/s/LhnqQMN7Fb
rxddit.com
đŒïž Gallery: 3 Images
ITS REAL!!!!! THERE WERE ASSETS FOR A "MACHINE" AND CONTROLLER!!!
https://komodostation.com/controller_small/
https://komodostation.com/frame_small/
https://komodostation.com/machine_small/
I got a peek just before they took it down, unless someone at Komodo is trolling, it's real
At least the headset pic looks very AI to me
SteamDB posted higher res pics, and the fan grills got some funny artifacts, not to mention the perspective is all over the place: https://bsky.app/profile/steamdb.info/post/3m5h5saemrk2j
Is there a chance SteamDB upscaled it? That would explain the grill artifacts (and that weird detail shift on that knob on the top). I think I see what you mean by the perspective being strange, but I think it's still plausible.
i'm gonna say that it doesn't make my AI senses tingle but i'm 1. desperate for this thing to come out and be real and 2. the image is genuinely just low quality
it might have been a preview image and not the full rez one that was taken from the website

Announcing new Steam Hardware from Valve: Steam Controller, Steam Machine, and Steam Frame are coming in 2026. Just like Steam Deck, all three devices are optimized for Steam and designed for players to get even more out of their Steam library.
NO WAY
They must be
They made the ULTIMATE device to suck meta quest dev exclusives out of Meta
Holy
I did not expect valve to compete against them
linus did NOT just say that you can install ANDROID APKS on the ARCH BASED steam frame đ„
its arm, sure, but a completely different OS
it has NO AR capabilities
the cameras are not even color
they aren't poaching anyone away from meta unfortunately
massively disappointing tbh
i was hoping this could have been valve's answer to spatial computing
well, its meant to be a steam deck-like device to play and stream steam games
its not a "spatial computing" or "mixed reality" headset and thats FINE.
plus, MR on quest kinda flopped, only really good experience with a MR game that i had was a free game called lasertag, and that requires a couple of people in one area locally with headsets, prefferably q3/3s
I don't care about AR capability really
i was praying for something like that, i'm sold on spatial computing but i need someone actually competent and not evil to do it
I want vr exclusive to not be exclusive
most use i had out of MR/AR was playing beat saber with passthrough by keying out one color ingame
i'm praying for a future where i don't have to own monitors anymore
but it cannot be meta to do it, i need valve
Valve will be more open about it im confident in that
This might be not the only SteamOS vr headset to come
I expect Valve allow non-Valve headset makers
had i not recently sold my macbook i'd actually be looking for an AVP
We could have Asus vr headset offering HorizonOS or SteamOS ver
i am NOT strapping asus hardware to my face đ
I honestly doubt that anything with HorizonOS is still coming out. Meta did the big announcement and then they begruged their partners (and Quest customers) by making HorizonOS terrible with the next 5-6 updates
They already spent effort making HorizonOS i hope to see them seeing serious threat menas they will focus more on gaming instead of ugh horizons
Also, history has proven that trying to compete on hardware with the company who also makes the OS has never been a good idea, unless the company making the OS hasn't been in the hardware since the launch of their OS...
I mean, just look at Symbian and the likes
But they burned soooo much money on AI idk if they can ask again for money on VR ecosystems
Meta has burned their bridges on the VR front. The only reason people still buy Quests is 'cause the cheapest decent option
And by decent I mean, better then nothing or Asiatrash (looking at you HTC and Pico >.>)
With valve making standalone ecosystem im confident that HorizonOS headset won't be the only viable option so... I WON'T MISS META DEATH
I hope so at least
Maybe HTC will make SteamOS headset
The Steam Frame can natively run PC and PCVR titles. It'll make gameporting a breeze. One plattform to target
Unlike Horizon OS which needs a whole seperate SDK and BS
I mean, they do have OXR, but using Meta's OXR SDK makes the game not run on other OXR runtimes; so effectively they tried making OXR propriatary
Gosh i love when pro consumer wins market
uh oh
great googly moogly!!!!!
dont tell me that its just my unfortunate region

Steam Machine video SOON!
Valve has announced the Steam Frame, Steam Mac...
Its not just you its been like that for a while now
Same as for me in Ireland
oof
The reason is because Valve stopped producing them, years ago
What u see is limited stock
Especially base station
holy shit this is awesome
Oh of course all this happened while I was out of the house at a job meeting
I just open my phone and see Linus post a video and that's how I find out
Nope. Index hardware hasn't been in production for a few months now. US warehouses have been out of stock for ages now, they even shipped some stock from the EU warehouse oversees to sate some of the demand. EU and Japan warehouses still had stock a few weeks ago. My guess, if those are out of stock, then the Index is no longer being sold
Not years ago, more likea few months ago
The lighthouses they had handed over to HTC years ago, yes. But Index hardware had still been in production for a while after
Well, the end of the LTT video says that Valve would be open to other companies reaching out to offer to continue to produce index hardware, so who knows what might happen?
Any word on cost
What is convenient is that many vr headset makers that can make standalone will simply adopt steamos such as play for dream MR or whatever Asus plan for HorizonOS can be remade for SteamOS
here's hoping they'll follow the same principle as the deck
well the precedent for the index is pretty high
cant wait for side by side comparrison for this Frame
Def selling the Quest 3, picked it up off FB and its going back into FB marketplace
I can't find any justification for keeping my quest 3 if i get this
Damn
Omg you can actually do 5 finger tracking (to an extent) on this
- The controllers holy shit are they good
- The connection and eye tracking is seamless
- The batterylife (not much info on it but its probs better)
anyone know the price?
You won't find any reliable info about price until valve says it
pls Bigscreen
Bigscreen needs completely different product to fit compute module for steamos
I was more talking about the Index controllers
My hope is they talk to Valve and continue making Knux in the interim
I bet there will be 1 genius 3rd oarty maker that put all compute in back and module can be removed or not included
Oh yes
That would be so great for better controllers
Possibly improving the design with TMRs in the future
index and it's ecosystem is EOL
Someone could reuse its design for inside out
That would actually be dope, if Bigscreen could pick up production for the Index controllers. Then you'd actually be able to buy one of their headsets without having to source controllers from somewhere else.
Really, whether I end up getting this new headset or a BSB2 is gonna come down to price. The Beyond 2e is like $2k for the headset plus the better headstrap, prescription lenses, a pair of controllers, and base stations. If the Frame is able to do everything it does for less money than that, then I'd be willing to accept the lower resolution, having a battery life, the heavier weight, etc. If it does end up being more expensive, then it'll be a hard choice
approximately what is the performance envelope on the frame
Snapdragon 8 gen 3
what does that mean what's in a quest 3
hmmm
Steam Frame OLED 6 months after the LCD launch, paired with a LCD price drop?
They've done it before đ€đ€đ€
Valve
Is this why you hired that OLED expert
VALVE DONT BLUEBALL ME
Now that would truly be legendary
Flashback 2023 datamining https://vxtwitter.com/SadlyItsBradley/status/1650104671216836610?t=tKa-pEy6RwHXNQaqv5pCUw&s=19
Quest 3 has an XR2 Gen2, which is comparable to a Snapdragon 8 Gen2 with a slower CPU and overclocked GPU iirc
I remember someone rumoured quest 4 with XR2 Gen3 was skipped because it wasn't meaningful enough upgrade
Idk
Yeah, Qualcomm reserves their latest and greatest Tech for the Snapdragon 8 series. XR2 is usually a generation behind by the time it get's released, or more like 2-3 generations behind with the exclusivity Windows that Meta has on the XR2 series...
and approximately how powerful is that for 2d games
You won't get a good answer since there is a lot of unknow about valve compatibility layer
Truue
Someone said the XR2 Gen1 GPU was comparable to a GTX 1050/1060, but then I also heared the same thing about the XR2 Gen2. Fact is, you can't really compare these because wildly different architectures, GPU drivers, OS support, etc
We had meta quest exclusive games for so long soon we might be able to compare side by side
Since we can sideload apk someone probably already ready to try to run it on Frame, albeit maybe without tracking capability yet
still not sure about the face button layout
like
mostly because theyre asymmetrical
but also because a dpad feels like an odd choice for a vr input
That.. might not be that simple, i strongly doubt quest games made with the oculus XR plugins will just be compatible like that
I know thats why i don't expect controls to work
I don't know how many quest games have that because as far as i know it fucking sucks
I expect it will be just able to install and thats it
And openXR plugin is just there
What i am more curious about is if it will be able to do foveated rendering in standalone
But i know modder Whatdahopper will be interested in it
I don't see why it wouldn't but i think games need to support it
Thats not an issue the issue is how to make games work with it
We have very little games that support foveated rendering
I mean
Foveated encoding has been used widespread so far and changing to pass through low latency foveated rendering is not hard standalone or pc streaming
If those fucking bumbling imbeciles of eagle dynamics managed to make PSVR 2's foveated rendering work on DCS
others can
If thats the case it should work soon
Knowing someone managed to make it work on quest pro (iirc?)
Using Steam Link or VD i don't remember
I don't think anyone bought quest pro
So no idea
Quest pro was genuinely like
The ouya of VR
or well the wii U
So what are the chances this new headset will have an accompanying launch title that's included with the headset purchase like HLA with the Index? I know a lot of people that would be more excited by a new first party valve VR game than any new hardware releases
They didn't announce HLA with the Index either, and Aparture Desk Job also wasn't announced until later for the Steam Deck. So chances are, they might still announce a game for the Steam Frame
HLA was meant to launch with Index BUT it was delayed so it was launched without
Plus someone asked Valve and they said they are not actively working on VR title so it could be Steam Machine game
It was mentioned in HLA: The final hours
so just a normal game??
like the steam machine is just a linux based pc game console
Yeah just a game
It's finally here: Steam Frame is Valve's new virtual reality headset, and we spend a day at Valve going hands-on with the new hardware, alongside the newly announced Steam Machine and Steam Controller! Here's everything you need to know about this standalone headset, how it plays both VR and flatscreen games, and Valve's unique approach to stre...
Just saw this pop up here figured folks already chatting about it here but some kind of overview
About hla agree if they want to sell the hardware a new game release to show it off feels like big miss if they don't do it but there's time
They missed before and it doesn't matter if the game isn't good
If they need time to polish game they will
what game is this? alyx2?
So we can change the cameras on the new steam vr headset to coloured ones I hear?
In theory, anything is possible with the port they have on the front of the headset
And I suppose it is Linux after all
Is it like only the port or can you change all 4 cams
Cause if u can change the cameras out that would be absolutely wicked
I don't see why you couldn't change them out yourself, you'd just need to be able to find something that would work
But we'll have to see once people start getting their hands on it
Fair point itâs that or Iâll wait for the quest 4 if it comes out
Rocking a quest 2 rn
Same here
The headset could be $1200 (not that I think it will be) and it'd still be a no-brainer for me
really just depends on price to performance for me ill just wait for the benchmarks and reviews as usual
I use my Q2 for PCVR, so as long as the Frame is at least as good at that, I'm ballin
it's complicated
there is a pcie connector at the front so someone COULD slap color cameras on it
but that is gonna be terrible ngl cause its 1 cam
but what i believe to be more interesting, if the frame sells enough units, it that we'll see different HMDs that will have different features
since you can detatch the display-processor-cameras unit from the strap
the connector is fast enough that it can mount multiple cameras
i just don't know how that will look like
yea its gonna look funky
like i can totally see a future where valve or a third party makes an AR productivity HMD
that you can just attach to the frame strap
or a base station tracked version that could be also wired
steam frame looks very cool. my read from linus' video is that if i have my PC in a room with a 6GHz-capable WAP and i'm sitting in another room with another 6GHz-capable WAP that's on the same network, the foveated streaming should still work? or do we think the dongle is creating its own kind of wifi-direct link to the frame?
I heard the foveated streaming is all done on the PC
The dongle is pretty much just a 6ghz router
the dongle makes its own network, think nofio og vive and index wireless adapter
6GHz AP
Yeah AP not router đ
5Ghz + 6Ghz
hoping that with the open source nature of the product, someone figures out how to make the dongle act as a client rather than an AP
not having to be in the same room as the host PC would be very nice
i dont think thats how it works its not a normal wifi dongle
you can just use normal router if u want to game in different room
kid named very long usb cable
Besides linus said the dongle worked like 15 feet away?
Pretty sure he said 50'
Though that was direct line of sight
Definitely will be shorter if it's in a different room altogether
oh my 50 wow but depends on the wall material i suppose
yeah I recall someone quoting what Valve said, essentially "it was great for us, but your mileage may vary"
some questions that i did not find the answer to:
can the frame be used while plugged in to charge?
What USB version is the 6 ghz dongle?
Can I use the dongle on a good quality extension cable in another room?
Will the new hardware ship to countries where the current hardware does not ship to?
specifically switzerland
I wonder what wavelength the IR illuminators are. Those MIPI lanes could fit two 1MP ADTF3175 ToFs if the frame's own IR illuminators are outside its 940nm bandpass filter. Perhaps a forward facing and a downward facing ToF. Probably would also want the ADSD3500 depth ISP too so that the snapdragon doesn't have to waste as much CPU/GPU time on depth processing
The answer to the charging question is most likely yes, because Linus specifically mentioned that the battery pack was placed in such a way that cable routing would be easy if you wanted to play with an external battery pack in your pocket. There would be no point in having an external battery pack plugged into the headset if you couldn't play while plugged in, so I'd assume that logic extends to having the headset plugged into a dedicated power source.
In the Tested interview about the Steam Frame, they did mention that the Dongle is USB 3, so you'd want an active extension cable, if you do want to place the dongle away from your PC. I don't see why you couldn't use it on an extension cable tho...
For the shipping question, my best guess is that you'll be able to get the Frame wherever you can currently buy the Steam Deck (OLED)
I wonder what the situation is like in BĂŒsingen am Hochrein. technically a german village, but an exclave surrounded by Switzerland, and for all internts and purposes acts like a Swiss village (outside of the legal stuff)
Wait why not
I don't know. I had this conversation yesterday with my Swiss friend and he thinks because Switzerland is not in the EU and same is with Norway.
Even tho they are in single market
Different currencies and taxing policies tho. My best guess as to why Valve still caters to Poland, Czechia and such, despite not using the Euro is because of EU laws requiring non-discriminatory between EU members. Switzerland and Norway aren't EU members, so Valve isn't forced to deal with their respective currencies. Tho afaik they never even bothered with different currencies for different EU members except Poland and former member the UK...
Poor Poles, get shafted on Valve hardware pricing just because they don't have Euros on their local Steam store
(this is the 1TB Steam Deck OLED btw)
Why would a trip out of the country change something? All my payment options are swiss as is my steam account. Anf steam is the only official way to buy the stuff. (I could get Euros in cash but the second point still stands)
I hate that Polish pricing so much
I can finally move on
watch in spatial on Vision Pro: https://share.icloud.com/photos/072SeZU-tYap3JW3g-hi6zySg
God has spoken
Release in early spring (fuck)
And he's worried that valve will get lazy again and not support the headset further
By the time steam frame stop support we will probably get third party SteamOS headsets
I'm not worried
Finally got a arrival date for my bsb2e xd
I didn't even think about this
That makes me mildly excited for what we might be seeing in the future
any talk of using knuckles with frame?
You can use it like you do on quest 3 just make sure you have base stations
You also need two extra dongles for the Knux, and ideally you'd also want an extra tracker to strap to the headset
the frame controllers have capacitive finger tracking too and they offer a knuckles strap addon
Wait, capacitive finger tracking or capacitive buttons? I thought it could only track the fingers that had buttons.
capacitive sensor under the grab button
you get best of both worlds with the roy controller
Oh, so it's not ACTUAL individual finger tracking, the thing that made the knuckles controllers so good for social applications and gesture controls : / sucks that feature has gone by the wayside, I'm sure a bunch of people would have loved to keep it
it has individual finger tracking
thats why theres capacitive sensor UNDER the grab button
and on top of that each button and joystick is capacitive too

oh dope
the way it was worded , it sounded like Meta's stuff where only the buttons you touch can track. it made it terrible to play Boneworks because you were forced to both push the grip button and pull the trigger at the same time to remove a gun from your inventory and it would always shoot when you did it
honestly imo roy controllers are much better than knuckles from the looks of it
using finger tracking instead of buttons was cool but it made it easy to have accidental inputs too. at least this has both
I mean, the PSVR2 controllers also state that it's grips have a capacitive finger sensor, but it can also track how far away your middle finger is from the controller. Tho it only has one sensor on the grip button...
I like that the Roy controllers actually have shoulder buttons and a full suite of face buttons. There's like, twice as many inputs as the Knuckles had?
oh yeah i didnt even realize. its got both a D pad and the xaby buttons
the headset itself is only twice the weight of the controllers combined
valve seems to have done a stellar job on the frame
Would it be worth it to look at reviews of other headsets with similar displays to the Frame to get an idea of how they'll look, or are we thinking that the Frame's displays will have enough special steam magic in them that a comparison to a headset with similar displays wouldn't really help?
I'm ok with the "lower" (comparatively) resolution of the Frame, I'm mostly concerned with the pancake lenses and screen door effect. I hear there are headsets that have imperceptible screen door effect nowadays but I've never experienced a headset like that so I'm wondering how it'll be on the frame.
no idea
we can see BB1 and BB2 using same display can be improved a bit
if u wanna see headset with same spec there is Pico 4 which i suspect have same display panel but I cannot verify yet
same res
Huh. Ok, I'll look around to see what peoples' thoughts on the fidelity of the Pico is then. Other than that, I imagine we'll have actual REVIEW reviews within the next few months.
keep in mind im not saying it uses same panel as pico 4
but
if valve is cheaping out it makes sense they use ready manufactured panels same as pico 4
getting custom panel is expensive
the 144Hz seems very high its either Pico is underultilizing or this is different or enhanced version
(it happened before when Quest 1 panel is 90Hz capable but it can only run 72Hz limited by software, same as Rift S 80Hz but capable 90Hz)
SF most definetly is using a different panel. There's several 2160x2160 square LCDs on the market for VR use-cases, but the ones used in both the P4 and G2 topped out at 90Hz (on the panel). Since Valve want's to offer a 144Hz experimental mode, the panels should at the very least support 120Hz. You can overdrive a panel by a bit, but not by a huge amount...
What I can say is that the Panels in the G2 were phantastic: great colors, good contrast and really good black level for bein LCD (likely a VA panel with a really low duty cycle). The P4 panels on the other hand weren't as great, with a some smearing in the image and overall washed out colors akin to the Index or a first gen WMR headset
OK, apparently I'm not allowed to link to my guess for what panel the Steam Frame is gonna use lol
Anyways, what I basically wrote up was that my guess is that the Steam Frame is using panels from Sharp, who seemingly also made the panels for the Reverb G1 and G2 (just much older panels from Sharp). Pico meanwhile is likely using either a BOE or Innolux panel (couldn't find any solid pics of markings on the P4 panels and both panelmakers brought a fitting panel into MP around the time of the P4 release)
and I guess SF is not capable of local dimming
UploadVR did not notice local dimming I was having small hope mayeb it will haev software update like Quest Pro but I guess you need Mini LED for that...?
All of the LCDs with that resolution and notched corners that I had found use edge lighting
So only 1 dimming zone, aka a single backlight
There are VR LCDs with notched corners that do have dimming zones (ex. the ones used in the Varjo XR-4 and Crystal Super QLED), but those are all much higher res and iirc only 90Hz
i think "imperceptible" varies wildly from person to person
like depending on how much attention youre paying
I just don't want to go back to constantly noticing screen door effect on my next headset : P with my Reverb G2, I have terrible vision and no prescription lenses for it so even though it's got good resolution, it's blurry enough that it's essentially equivalent to how a Quest 1 would look to someone with normal vision in terms of resolution. Just with no screen door effect, because of how blurry it is. Because of this, I don't really have to worry about screen door effect at all. So if I get a new headset that I do end up getting proper lenses for, sure I'll actually be able to see the headset at proper resolution, but I'll actually be able to see the screen door effect again, so it ends up not even being worth it
Holy crap, I'm an idiot. For some reason this whole time I thought my current headset had a much higher resolution than it does, and I just couldn't see its pixel density properly due to not having lenses for it. But no, the Reverb G2 and the Steam Frame have the exact same resolution, 2160x2160 per eye.
I remember knuckle tracking would get slightly goofy if the controller got sweaty
tbf even if the resolution isnt extraordinary the ppi is actually good
orc was it ppd in vr headset context i forget
ppd isnt revealed yet on the frame
but i would assume its better considering the package of the frame is much smaller than the reverb
theyve said circa 110 degrees fov no?
what does that have to do with anything
smaller screen at the same resolution would result in higher PPD
i thought i read 30 ppd somewhere but i may have been tweaking
i just found 25 somewhere else. no one actually has it yet other than valve
we can only estimate
no 25 is quest 3
and it was compared to quest 3
to find the PPD of the frame we need to know the resolution (check), field of view (check) and the distance between the lenses and the panels, as well as any possible angle between the panels
i think the HP reverb had outward facing panels which caused eye strain, i could be wrong im gonna see if i can find it
...no? not necessarily? the optical stack is completely different
if youre talking about ppi sure
pixels per inch
but if you magnify the large display over the same fov as the small one they'll have the same (average) ppd
the quest 3 also has an average PPD of 22, peak of 25
if you calculate them only accounting for the resolution and the fov then the frame comes out to 19.6 PPD
that is impossible
would be too low to make flatscreen games playable
linus would have noticed if it was THAT low
exactly why i think we should wait for more testing
bigscreen beyond 2 weighs less than the iphone air, lol
Talking about bsb2-
amazing
I'm gonna get an oculus rift S for like 200AUD.
For someone that just wants something to plug in and play, what are the thoughts here?
It's a pretty ancient headset with literally 0 replacement parts available and a known fragile cable
If the cable is damaged/broken/causes issues, your headset is toast
I'd suggest rather get something with replacement parts (like a Vive), isn't as fragile (like a Quest 1) or more recent (like a Quest 3s)
I wouldn't bet on it its easy to break and replacement part is very expensive
Not good price either
but dont the vives require base stations and stuff đ
Like
I just want to plug it in and not have to worry about that đ
also I don't have a usbc port on my pc so đ
like the rift s just seems so much easier đ
Just get a Quest 3S then. No base stations, recent and solid price. I have one and itâs been quite good.
If it's equally annoying to you on Rift S you have to rely on old barely if not unmaintained outdated Oculus software, make sure usb is connected and have correct specs with all 3 cables, do room calibration on oculus and launch steamvr to finally play games
And you have to carry heavyweight of oculus dashboard reducing your performance unless you mod it to remove it
I think a quest headset is becoming similar difficulty if not because of meta account and an app on phone requirements
Also if you buy quest new get someone $30 referral and buy Virtual Desktop or any games you want
psvr2 can also be a good option, they have gotten a nice sale recently and you can find cheaper ones second hand too, the pc adapter also shouldnt be too bad
Yeah but well... Expensive
Still
Maybe if lucky you can find psvr2 cheap second hand
I got my PSVR2 for like 400âŹ. They can be had for pretty cheap used, and it's a good headset. Just needs the official PC adapter box đ
I sold mine to CEX for âŹ230 ugh
Anyone picked up the meta ray ban displays yet?
my oculus software hard crashes my pc on boot pretty often lol
well notice also
i say go for it if you haven't tried vr before i doubt that youll find something cheaper
Yeah thatâs honestly a consideration here
Iâve never owned a vr headset. Iâve tried one once or twice, but never to play exactly what I wanted
So I donât wanna spend a lot especially if I donât use it much
Thus far, the next cheapest thing Iâd consider is a vive cosmos, sitting around a price of 250-300aud depending on condition.
Anything else is like double the original price so
Oh no its not a good headset anyways
Rift S is fine then
My tips: make sure cable still work. Also really make sure the AA battery compartment is not rusted. I made that mistake when battery compartment is really rusty.
Make sure the stick is not drifted and controllers can be tracked
My PSVR and PSVR2 have been collecting dust unfortunately
Aww why
I didn't use it myself but many others are concerned about the tracking issue from it
Okay rift S it is then
Since HTC Vive
think meta-quest is good price for performance best bang for buck, biggest downside is meta and meta software
wrt no usb-c if have open PCI-express slot can get add in card for USB-c I did it on older machine and can work fine but tbh still ended up just using steam link and over wifi for most PC-VR stuff since nice not being tethered to the machine and performance is acceptable when I'm so close to the router anyway
the on headset software is not so bad it does most of the kind of "normal stuff" like being able to browse around a bit with a browser or watch youtube/netflix and the interface, aside from blasting you with a bunch of meta non-sense is otherwise fine. They've got some nice built in things for like measuring a room or moving around virtual furniture or whatever too and as standalone headset some good titles (fan of Batman, "I expect you to die", beat saber, super hot.... handful of others)
BSB2 seems like nicest PCVR option IMO, but pricey... I can deal with a little clunky for the times I'm in VR but if was trying to use it professionally or something BSB2 seems like a more comfortable long term option... about the new steam one I'm not so sure about the target market of people who want to be closed off into a space but play 2D games, I guess it has appeal if have small apartment or dorm living type scenarios but definitely has to be cheap enough to make more sense than a big TV which have also been dropping in price for forever.
If it's quest 1 some annoying issue is you are stuck at 72Hz and its EOL so you won't get latest updates in meta store
RAM prices so bad I have to upgrade in advance to be Steam Frame ready
i got mine for full price back in 2023 đ
are there any good recent vr releases or is it still just alyx and beat saber
rift s is cool
I'd way rather do all that than try to setup base stations
I didn't say base station is better but sure
or at least if I can still use it without internet
I still despise the facebook shenanigans and would never get a quest for those reasons
I already didn't sign up for this garbage with the normal oculus app
its not recent but metro awakening is really fun I finally got around to playing it there is a demo star wars droid repair game that is a fun 20 minuet time killer as well
beamng and dirt 2.0 both are fun in vr as well if you like racing games
also has anyone gotten the flip vr controllers I was looking at them and they seem like one of the few lighthouse based vr controllers left (may be the last ones left :/) and I want to more or less stick with all light house based tracking while I can its convenient and for me always just works.
I guess also the etee controllers too
but they seem to have the same issues I have with the vive wands which is no buttons they just have finger tracking like the index controllers insted of trigger and squeese button thing
cool steamvr mod i installed
unrelated but i've just bought more vive trackers!
all of this just to meow in vrchat btw
Meow
now modify the CSS of the status window
here's my alters mod
all of those trackers are virtual ofc
truly a noble cause

Hey guys is there a way to make the PS VR launch edition wireless with some sort of adapter? My cable situation is alr bad enough as it is
Nope
The only headsets for which there are wireless adapters/possibility for wireless are these:
- Rift CV1 (TPcast)
- OG Vive (TPcast or Vive Wireless Adapter)
- Vive Pro 1 & 2 (Vive Wireless Adapter)
- Valve Index (Nofio)
All the ones above are native Wired headsets (like the PSVR) which received some sort of hardware adapter that can make it wireless. Tho in my experience and reading online reviews the only one of those worth looking into is the Vive Wireless Adapter; preferably in combination with a Vive Pro 1.
The ones below are all Standalone headsets which have some sort of software that turns them into wireless PCVR headsets: - Quest (all of the Quest headsets; Quest AirLink, Virtual Desktop, Steam Link)
- Vive Focus 3 & Vision (Vive Streamer)
- Pico 4 (Pico Link or Virtual Desktop)
- Steam Frame (comes with a wireless adapter dongle)
I should mention that none of those solutions work with the Playstation. They're strictly PCVR only.
pico got steamlink too now
It's not worth converting wired headsets into wireless
I have not seen a single satisfied person and funny thing i know someone had nofio and tried to sell for like a year now no one wants it even when it's deep discounted now
Yeah, the Nofio is absolute garbage
The Vive Wireless Adapter is that same idea, but actually executed somewhat well
I wish I could do wireless on my Quest 2 but I don't have a spare router just lying around
With wired link the thing is an actual piece of unusable trash
I'm one "PC Disconnected" away from smashing this thing with a hammer
hmm maybe it might work with a psvr -> pc adapter? just for kicks
Installed ALVR, no longer homicidally enraged at quest link
It was way easier than I expected
Will increasing bitrate increase smoothness? Iâve pushed it up to 500Mb/s and thatâs already a massive improvement in performance over the default under 100. I presume it decreases the GPUâs encoder workload since it doesnât have to squish each frame as much.
I have a USB 3.0 cable in the proper port so I should be able to easily manage 1000
I suppose that could cause issues on the decode side
There is only so much headset can decide yes
increasing bitrate will increase encoder (pc) and decoder (quest) workload and depending on hod good your hardware is, reduce smoothness. however higher bitrate means less compression in the image sent to your quest, which means clearer image
yep.
I have a pretty good encoder in my 3080 but my Quest 2 struggles
no wonder tbh, its quite an old chip by now
higher encode resolution (transcoding resolution in alvr) + high bitrate = higher load on the decoder chip of quest 2's xr2 gen 1
The future is foveated encoding
god i love me some free money đ€đ€đ°đ°đ€
Would forcing software encoding for the headset save me from the fight between OBS and ALVR for the GPUâs encoder? I have an 8 core CPU so I think Iâve got the overhead for VTOL VR
im upgrading to a gtx 1080 ti, will i finally be able to actually run games semi alright?, also what are the "most important" settings in alvr that i gotta change asap
FYI. Driver support is ending / ended for the 10XX series cards. This doesn't mean you can't game on it, but eventually games may stop working if they require features that are only present in newer driver versions. https://www.reddit.com/r/gpu/comments/1me2s7l/nvidia_confirms_gtx_1080_ti_driver_support_will/
oh i know and i guess its only temporary
till i scramble enough cash to get a more modern gpu
no because software encoding is really slow
split obs and headset on different encoder H.264 and H.265
Depending on how the encoder pipelines are constructed in the GPU, this might not help. NVENC has 2 pipelines per encoder chip and most NVIDIA GPUs only have 1 of those, since one pipeline is always reserved for shadow play by the driver (even when not using it), that leaves you with only one GPU encode stream. In that case it doesnât matter if h.265 or h.264 :/
the number of encoders per encoder chip has changed a fair bit over the generations. 20 and 30 series is 1 encoder per chip across the lineup. Prior to that it was 1 or 2 depending on the class. 40 and 50 series got two encoders for xx70 ti and up and 5090 even got upgraded to 3.
https://developer.nvidia.com/video-encode-decode-support-matrix
It's possible you're remembering the arbitrary 2 sessions limit that was in place for ages, but over the past few years has been climbing and is now at 12 sessions.
Is the meta quest 3s a good pick at 250$
if you have an iGPU, you can use that for obs encoding, should be enough to offload plus fairly modern igpus are good at encoding (my igpu inside my r7 4800h does its job quite well, 4k60@70mbps is no problem)
I sadly don't have one
what GPU do you have? You may have multiple encoders on it anyways so there wouldn't be any sharing. I linked nvidia's list above. I couldn't find an AMD list, so they might be just always 1 encoder.
Iâve got a 3080 so I presume it has one encoder
Looks like I do have support for 12 sessions, whatever that means
Yea, just one unfortunately. It basically time-shares the one encoder between the sessions. Depending on the settings of the encodes you'll probably hit a bottleneck before you can get the whole 12 though
Hey guys I'm like really new to PCVR so around how demanding are GPU games? Like, for context, how much of an FPS drop will there be in MSFS normal to VR with same settings? Thanks.
I posted this in tech support but it seems to be being buried in other tickets so im gonna say here, I recently swapped out my 5060 for a 9060XT as i wanted to go all AMD, everyone said i should see no noticable change in my VR preformance, however just simply on VRChat on just Low settings, it shoots my GPUs utilization to 99% and the frame rate is stuttery and choppy, however the temperature of the card dosnt change, according to 3 different programs
Pretty huge its worse than upping 1080p to 4K
MSFS is one of most demanding VR game that many true enthusiasts spends thousands if not tens of thousands just to get good experience
However mind you 40fps in VR is different than 40fps in monitor due to asynchronous reprojection tricks make it feel better and your degree of tolerance on vr is less
If you want to be GPU efficient try to figure how to get foveated rendering working (eye tracking required)
It's the same for me in 2080Ti in Nvidia it's not an AMD issue
Did you maybe change the CPU as well?
No my cpu is the same
Maybe auto resolution increased as a result of better hardware
Meta appears to be planning to raise the price of its VR headsets moving forward, according to a recent internal memo, which company leaders hope will combat rising costs. Meta may also be retiring the Quest 3 and 3S line a little later than expected. The News As reported by Business Insider, a December 4th âŠ
Lol maybe it will help me sell my headset at higher price to recoup for steam frame
if its rooted it has even more value!
Definitely RAM prices
Also they cut 30% "metaverse" budget so they are subsidizing less
is 128GB to little on a VR headset
if you use it for pcvr only, no
if you have 120129 standalone games, also no, just uninstall the ones you dont plan on playing
you have to see what you want to do that needs 128GB
i never even cross more than 1GB because I only use for steam link lol
Anyone used monado on linux
buy a quest 3 they said
If you are a really good beat saber player quest 3 latency could be felt
what's the performance impact of vr over other games? i have a 7800XT and want to look into pcvr
Yeah largely is a "it depends" what it depends on is the scaling and encoding I'm pretty sure meta quest link connection over wire eats something like 3GB of VRAM just using the desktop so basically have whatever is left for game to load textures and model assets
Steam link seems to have less overhead but can tweak settings with different streaming options to trade quality for speed too
You don't want VR games to be laggy so is often worth dropping some quality settings to get reasonable fps as to not đ€ź
hmm okay
do you think it'd run well in 1080p?
thats my normal resolution for everything
If you play VR your resolution should be your vr headset render resolution
1080p is reeeeealy low on VR
Like 2016 level Oculus Rift CV1 and HTC Vive render goal should be 1512x1680 per eye
For quest 2 for example you should aim for 5408x2736
A modern headset is about as many pixels as flatscreen at 4k 90 fps
what's "it"
like menaced said your gpu is good
A good desktop gpu will also be a good vr gpu
Im telling you from experience, my 7800xt runs vr great
Quest link in general seems to be pretty bad software. Iâve had a ton of disconnects and performance issues. ALVR with the wired connection seems to be way better performance
quest people should just use steam link and not bother with the quest link anyway
its slop software and bad at everything
Well those range from beat saber to MSFS
or god forbid vrchat
i dont even want to think about any version of microsoft flight simulator that can't drink /hj
i think blade and sorcery and superhot vr are the ones i most want to play and from what i've heard they aren't the most graphically intensive of vr games
Not just Quest Link. The entire Quest OS is super broken and has been for quite a while now. It's almost like Meta has been doing more extensive vibe coding then even Microsoft
Yeah my Quest 2 has been struggling to start up for the past couple weeks
It either goes to blank gray or it loads into the home world but the UI never appears
I usually have to restart it three or four times to get it to work
God I'm so excited for TMR thumbsticks for the Frame controllers. It wasn't even mentioned in the latest vid. Meta's thumbsticks started drifing like 10 hours in for me.
No amount of cleaning helped, and any 3rd party thumbstick you can get has pretty much the same issue
That being said, I do play a lot of VTOL VR which needs a lot of thumbstick clicking, which seems to be the main cause of drift. But still, what the hell
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH
Meta has âpausedâ its initiative to bring third-party Horizon OS headsets to the market. The company says it has shifted focus to âbuilding the world-class first-party hardware and software needed to advance the VR market.â The News A little over a year and a half ago, Meta made an âindustry-altering announcement,â as I called the âŠ
Didn't happen
Honestly, not surprised
They're struggeling to keep their vibe coded BS to run stabally on their own hardware as-is
New video!
:(
Are you talking about feeling like you hit a cube and it says you missed it?
did you watch until the end and focused on the gray saber?
Oh yea I see it now. I get the same problem is there a fix to it you have found?
Quest series has me forever skeptical of inside out tracking. I'm hoping the things people are saying about the Frame are true.
i believe in fluxpose
that clip is 50% speed btw
can anyone reccomend me a USB power+data hub? Ive had an oculus quest 2 for about 4 years now, and finally wanted to use PCVR for iRacing and such, but the MOBO ports dont supply enough power (15w?) for the quest, I would prefer to have either a hub or even a expansion card to help with this, thanks.
To feed extra power with a hub iirc is to break usb spec convention
The most stable way to feed power that I could recommend and you will not like it
Is to run it wirelessly via router with charging cable to your headaet
That is the only way to make to last indefinitely
Quest 2 specs state 10W charging, 5V 2A. I think most USB 3 hubs will follow USB 3 spec, which unfortunately is 5V 1.5A. A hub would be allowed to power their own VBUS and indicate USB Type-C Current @ 3A and still be compliant @weak bluff . I'm not sure about previous USB connector specs, but USB-C allows hubs to do this.
On a side note, it's crazy they only finally upgraded the charge circuit to USB-PD (9V 2A, 18W) with the quest 3. Iirc the quest 2 can use up to 14W so 10W is a bit odd, though maybe average power use could be less.
Found one
https://a.co/d/7sPenPe
@north tusk
The top port on this is 5V 3A
id burn my headset before I use wireless pcvr
it is beyond ass
thank you đ«¶
I forgot one thing to mention is that if your environment isn't cold enough, it'll eventually still throttle the charge current anyways due to temperature
Yeah thats not too big of an issue
That is not what i mean by breaking the spec
What i mean by is if you try to feed the power to a cable with an active cable like these ones they break the spec
There is no motherboard that can feed 18W, you need to feed active power somehow but cables like these break the spec
Allegedly
Anyone who thinks wireless is much worse haven't tried a good wireless setup
I can't speak to this specific cable, but these are normally built as single-port hub which does not violate the spec at all.
.
Plenty of motherboards actually do have 18W USB-PD support on their type-c ports, but that wouldn't work with the quest 2. "USB Type-C Current @ 3A" otoh, which is what quest 2 needs, is not commonly implemented though.
quest 2 is not USB-PD
and even in the case of USB-PD, a single port hub allows these cables to be fully compliant with the spec. I cannot guarantee every cable does this, as it adds costs, but it is absolutely possible to build a cable like that that is spec compliant.
The Quest becomes the client device when plugged into a PC for data. As I have previously written, a client USB device is only ever meant to deal with PD when it's the only protocol it has to deal with. If you plug in a USB hub into the Quest and then plug your PC into said hub, the Quest will not show up, as the Quest would act as a host in that case. (USB-Hubs are sortof directional with the cable side being for the Host and the ports being for clients)
Host devices can receive PD while sending out data, it's part of the spec for USB-C docks, but the same is not true for the client side of the USB transaction...
As I have previously written, a client USB device is only ever meant to deal with PD when it's the only protocol it has to deal with.
Incorrect. I have no idea where you've got this idea. USB-PD's BMC protocol is the means by which device role, USB4 mode, and type-c alt modes are all negotiated.
If you plug in a USB hub into the Quest and then plug your PC into said hub, the Quest will not show up, as the Quest would act as a host in that case.
hubs still have a UFP and DFPs and this matters w.r.t. to data transfer, but one of the major intents of USB-PD was to allow power direction to be irrespective of this. A port can even be a DRD port and perform a DRS to switch between DFPs and UFPs, though there's no obligation of a particular hub IC to support this on its ports. A specific hub implementation is likely to have designated power inputs and outputs for practical reasons, but this is not a limitation of the spec. Data aside, clients on the DFPs can be power sources or sinks and the host on a UFP can also be a power source or sink.
Please read section 1 of the USB-PD spec. What you're saying goes against some of the fundamental intents of USB-PD described therein

I have never seen a single happy XR Elite buyer even at its discounted price

Are the vive trackers fine to run through a usb hub I have 4 but am thinking about 3 more and don't have any more front usb ports on my case
It heavily depends on the hub. Some work better then others. I've got an Anker hub that works fine for 3 trackers plugged directly into it, but I know people who've gotten the same hub off Amazon and theirs had a different hub chip internally and didn't work very well :/
Since for most applications the actual hub hardware doesn't matter, it'll always be hit or miss wether a hub is good for the usecase of tracker dongles or not. I've heard people even had issues with those purpose build hubs from Rebuff Reality and Tundra Labs (tho those have ofc the highest chance of just working)
would you guys say that getting a quest link cable's worth it or nah?
ok valve it's early 2026 where is my steam frame
official one? no
I just bought a Meta Quest 2 with controllers for ÂŁ175.
Congrats! There's a lot of fun to be had there
Im looking to upgrade from my rift cv1. What would be a good upgrade? I really want a better image and something wireless if possible. I saw people talking about the bigscreen beyond but thats a bit steep for me
Below bigscreen beyond that is wireless is naturally Quest 3 and Quest 3S whichever budget allows
Those are best value for now and both headset will get price hike very soon
There is also upcoming Steam Frame which we don't know the price yet we just know it is under $999
im in the same boat and im really interested in the steam frame
The frame is definitely very compelling
I think it may have the slight edge over the quest since it has a dongle included and it runs steam os so i can do desktop vr games on mobile
Its still a bit more than i would like but it might be worth it
I have a lot more trust in valve to deliver on the software experience than facebook
steam remote streaming just works and steam input just works
seriously
all ive heard about the quest streaming is how much hassle it is
Also native linux support
Im growing an itch to ditch windows
I think quest streaming should be fine if you are willing to make your setup good for it
You need a wifi 6 or 6e router and have it nearby with your pc wired to it
Which im assuming probably isnt the case for most people
The included dongle on the steam frame makes all that stuff unimportant
I'm looking forward more and more to the Frame because I realized that it solves a lot of problems for me. I have a fairly powerful system, but since I basically only play flat screen games with low hardware requirements, the only reason I have the hardware I do is to play VR. So if I get a Frame, I can pretty much play all of the VR games I want on the Frame itself, and I could realistically ditch my 6950XT and just play all my normal games on much lower power GPU. Also, my current room setup is kind of bad for VR, so I have a hard time not hitting stuff. But with a Frame, I could just go to a different room that's got more room. As much as I like the BSB2, the Frame just seems more practical for my situation
I'm gonna have to save up three months of my leisure purchase allocations but I think it'll be worth it
Well yea but the frame just comes with a dongle running on an uncongested frequency
Not to mention foveated streaming !!!!
well the frames own gpu isnt gonna be particularly powerful either?
i would wait for review
Of course
2 of the only 3 VR games I have any desire to play can already be played on the quest 2, and the third game is half life alyx and it would be kind of stupid if their fancy new headset can't play their previous gen VR title. So I have no worries about the onboard hardware
Eine
It's the first mobile headset I have any interest in because I don't have to re buy my entire library for it like the quest headsets
Other option is streaming to the frame from a steam machine, so that I still don't have to worry about my main rigs hardware going forward.
The only flat screen games I play are PC ports of mobile games, so I could downgrade my GPU pretty heavily since I wouldn't have to worry about playing VR off that same system, as long as the frame can play beat saber, bonelab, and HLA on its own.
Noo meta is gonna stop pdating quest 2 in late 2026 :(((
IT'S HERE!
You won't get any review until it's released
I've hooked up a router to a WiFi extender and my desktop so I can get Internet as well as good PCVR streaming.
6/10
Good headstrap, could get a better face cushion, Quest 3S is a pretty mid tier headset, but solid
ya i agree any recommendations.
Globular Cluster F3 Q3S from thier website, as the Quest 3S one is not on Amazon yet.
its a magnetic frame that lets you swap face cushions based on what you are doing, it comes with 3 different face cushions. I have the Quest 3 version and it's amazing.
It's 30% more powerful than quest 3
Ish
How difficult is it to mod a Quest 3S?
as in? software or hardware
if software, are you on v78 or before?
I got 3S what should I get on it
Carabiners work really good for running your VR cable to the ceiling doesn't solve the twisting problem but it keeps it off the ground and away from your feet
Valve will tell us when they tell us.
Valve not being upfront with a price or even a price-range is very concerning
Given the current price situation around the parts they're using, it's a very sane decision honestly...
BOM pre-DRAM crisis was around 550 dollars. even now i would be really surprised if final price was over 800.
especially since as far as we know frames entered in production before the dram crisis
assuming that's true valve's problem would be having to make a price hike after their current stockpile of materials has been used up, so i believe they're trying to see what other dram sources they can get their hands on before they announce a price they'll have to heavily revise anyway
In South Korea companies are literally booking extended hotel next to Samsung factory begging for DRAM contract
The situation is really dire
And Valve probably don't have as big negotiation power as some of those booking at hotel
OpenAI has literally reserved 40% of all DRAM output from Micron. That's a massive chunk of the worldwide DRAM output. I don't think people realize how dire the situation is for literally everyone else...
I wonder how this DRAM crisis going forward is going to compare to the chip shortage during the pandemic in terms of how it affects everyday consumers. Like, not being able to buy GPUs was really bad during the shortage, but there were also cars that were sitting unfinished due to not being able to get the chips for their onboard computers. Maybe consumers will be more likely to go against AI when they realize that almost everything that's electronic uses some component or another that's being hoarded by AI companies and it's the reason a ton of products will be in short supply in the near (and possibly not so near) future.
It happened before you know
Cars just switched from digital clock to analog clock etc
But last chip shortage didn't change much
And RAM shortage did not happened for first time since RAM have a history of multiple times fluctuations due to the RAM cartel, didn't force market to change
RAM manufacturers are not going to ramp up capacity because in the past they did and it caused oversupply when demand dropped. And this time the hesitation is even more real because? OpenAI bought ram that haven't existed yet using nonexistent money by a non profitable company
The ram price is high is mostly because of uncertainty more than capacity
Wait THERE'S A USB PORT??!?
Valve designed VR-hardware always had a USB-aux port. The OG Vive, Vive Pro & Index all have one
(just the Vive Pro being the odd-one-out with a Type-C instead of Type-A)
I knew the newer ones did didn't know the original one did
Even though the OG Vive's USB port is pinned for USB 3.x, it doesn't actually support 3.x. The Linkbox is required for the USB signal to have enough power, and there never was an OG Vive Linkbox with USB 3.x support. (plus the 5m cable is USB 2 only anyways)
might be worth getting a decent headset and mic then since for some reason after switching to linux my L+R audio channels are swapped
could you just plug a usb 3.0 cable and bypass the link box like you can with the hdmi?
Not sure. Never tried it honestly
And I no longer have mine, so not like I could even try now
and no sound unless its at 100% volume but thats not the worst thing to deal with since I can just turn the game down in game menu
this is my current headset I am using still but once I find a good deal on an index imma probably get it
The OG Vive actually has 2 different ways of accepting audio: once through USB (the same audio device that's used for the mic), but also through HDMI. Is the issue on both?
interesting I do have the box plugged in through display port because the hdmi wasn't working with my amd gpu
if I didn't use the box it worked fine but I then couldn't reach my play area with the cable because I have my cable ran through some carabiners on the celing
also how good is the original psvr I got my sisters a ps4 for christmas
The original PSVR isn't really that great
Unless you want the exclusives, I'd recommend you get something else instead tbh
I just meant like insted of nothing they don't really have much to play over there just the ps4 so I was thinking about getting that for them too
Whats even on it
wait they still sell the delux audio strap for the original vive? how worth it is that upgrade since my strap is disintegrating the more I use it
There's people whoe modded their DAS to be the headstrap on their Bigscreen Beyond and Pimax headsets. If that doesn't say it's worth it, then I dunno what does. Personally never had one tho, since I've always been happy with the stock straps + headphones
got it I will have to figure out my audio situation since I don't think that will fix the L+R audio channels being swapped but hopefully I can figure it all out
welp thats fixed XD
I just swapped from analogue stereo output to digital and it was fixed
If you're on Linux just wait to see what steamframe costs tbh
Personally I've modded my headsets with DAS and the original vive strap, original strap feels better to me and I can use any headphones I want. Its just harder to get at this point
Hmmmmm
if you want pcvr on the avp, dont bother, just use alvr
I dont want to deal with the steam frame and all the issues it would have with my current setup the vive works fine once you get it set up I just haven't in a while and am forgetting things
What issues? It's not even out lmao. But fair enough...?
The same issues all standalone or non lighthouse tracking based headsets have when you are using lighthouse based fbt plays pace merging and stuff it's just easier to have everything be outside in
Like unless it has lighthouse tracking built in its going to have a lot of the same issues that like a quest or psvr2 does
I see. They might implement it better since it's just.. Developed by valve but we'll see. Heard it wasn't that bad but since lighthouse tracking is dying now essentially I'm just going for iommus at this point. Been wanting fbt for like 5 years now and it's gonna be longer till I get it
inside out solves some problem but introduces different problems
you wont have to deal with base station occullusion problem
valve did solve play in the dark issue, my big plus
you mean IMUs?
iommu is
something else
It could also be possible they have a software solution to accomodate the frame's standalone tracking and lighthouse tracked items.
Come to think of it how do lighthouse tracked objects even communicate with the pc?
I never gave it any thought
I know that vive and tundra trackers require USB dongles so that's just 2.4 ghz probably, but how do index controllers do it? Do they talk to the HMD?
u replied to the wrong message?
Oh shit yea
Yep
they use their own NRF communication to connect to trackers
similar to wireless mouse dongle
the solution is to basically stick a tracker to the headset but since I went with the vive trackers I can only use like 5 or 6 at most before there is too much interferane between eachother and they loose connection. I am thinking about making my own trackers that use both lighthouses and imus but that wouldn't be for a while
its kinda dead but not really htc took over production of the lighthouses like a while ago and a lot of new hardware still uses it from the bigscreen beyond to a lot of 3rd party controllers
Its just not worth getting into at this point IMO. The hardware hasn't really gotten cheaper or better in terms of reliability
If you've already invested in it meh, fair but IMUs have gotten good enough and the Frame is just a lot more compelling of a package than BSB i would imagine for those who have only had standalone or flatscreen
I mean you can get used valve index headsets for $300 as well I buy used for most things the bigscreen beyond is one of if not the best just no nonsense headset (sadly not very cheap)
they have the universal gaskets now
I was looking at ebay the original bigscreens used are about $400 cheaper than new so I was thinking bout that with the new gasket and audiostrap
or maybe 3d print adapter for the vive audio strap upgrade thing
actually looking on ebay the original bigscreen has a few listings for around $525 even I might stop by optometrist to get my ipd measured
I miss VR, but I don't have the money right now
My vr setup (PSVR and PSmove controllers using iVRy)
The glowing ball looks similar to a Nolo Tracker, but I thought those weren't supposed to glow
Oh... Almost forgot Nolo CV1 existed
The reason why the are glowing ball on the controller and the headset so the PS3 eye camera can see them and track the position of the controllers and the headset. Also there is a screw vise on the headset so I can put a battery on, and power the LEDs inside the blue bulb
It does but the LEDs are dim to the PS3 cameras
It has come to my attention that I pretty much have to decide whether I am going to buy a steam frame, or attend two family trips happening this year because Idk if I'm gonna be able to afford to do both. But at the same time, it's sort of a situation where I don't know whether having a frame would even make me play more, or if it would just make the rare times that I do play more enjoyable. Like, do I rarely play VR because my current headset sucks, or because the games I have just aren't that interesting? In the latter case, idk if it would even be worth it to upgrade until some of the games I'm looking forward to (upcoming SLZ titles) come out in 3-5 years or so. Cuz if I upgrade before any new interesting games come out, I'd basically just be getting a frame to play half life alyx, beatsaber, and boneworks/bonelab more conveniently / clearly and that just doesn't really seem worth it. That's kind of why I was really looking forward to a new VR title from Valve launching alongside the frame, but right now I'm not even sure said title exists.
can always just get it later.. once it comes back in stock
Try VTOL VR i had a Blast in the game super fun
Depends on your headset though
I use the quest 2 and i have no issues other than maybe being able to enjoy a lil bit more resolution but thats a luxury issue for me
Yall ive got a pico 4. I have a 3060ti and my vr performance is fine but sometimes a bit stuttery and not completely ideal. Do you think the 6800xt would give me a decent enough overhead if I decided to upgrade to that?
I suppose I could. Is the r5 5600 not good enough for vr??
It IS AM4 but its not that old of a CPU and I have no problems with it typically.
Id be kinda shocked if its a CPU bottleneck
If it were a CPU issue im not willing to upgrade to AM5 with current economy. Maybe pick up a better 5000 series cpu
5800x3d type beat
I may honestly do both lol. Found a 5900x for a solid price. May as well max out am4 before being forced to switch to am5 in 3-4 years time
Just check it omg
pico is wireless right?
could be some wifi shenanigans too
Its 3am buddy I cant right now lmao. Way too tired to shove a vr headset on atm. Will be done in the morning.
I'm running a 5800x with few problems so you should be fine.
For gaming I'd get a 5800x3d or 5700x3d the 3d vcache is probably going to do more than the extra cores most of the time
Also 6800xt would be pretty good overhead I am running a 7700xt and it's really solid I get no stutters or anything with an og vive at native resolution.
So syntech batteries currently can't be purchased separately from the full headstrap
Every combo with battery that isn't just the strap is unavailable
Id agree if they weren't ridiculously priced. Talking $600
CAD* of course
The 5900x i just found is $250
Ah I got mine on black Friday for $250 usd year before last
5800x3d may be better but idk if its 2x better LOL
And either way both are upgrades to my 5600x
True
I can probably resell my 5600x for $100 CAD relatively easily
Though I'd keep an eye on marketplace or equipment site for one of you can
How much diff really is the performance between the two tho. In benches I glimpsed at yesterday the difference was only about 5-10 frames typically
Yeah 5%ish overall but if you plan on staying on am4 for a while might as well max it out and ride it out as long as possible that's what I am doing I hopefully can ride out am4 untill am6 comes out amd skip the am5 socket
gaaaaadd why did i buy all those games on the oculus store
Because they bought out a bunch of good developers(?) Before killing their studios
nah job sim and beat saber and budget cuts are all on steam
Ah well.. Can't help you there
Thinking maybe you can extract the apps possibly, but no idea. Certainly not something I can outline here I don't think and assuming you do manage that kinda doubt if inputs will work or anything on some other headset but it's an idea
There's ReVive but its just a hassle
The desktop rift store to be clear
Hey does anyone on the server have experience with any of the Viture XR/AR glasses? Took the plunge on their special Cyberpunk 2077 version of them and curious if theyâre good.
Has anyone else found it to be actual hell trying to do VR? I have a Quest 2, and after Quest link stopped working I switch to ALRV, which I got working perfectly fine and smooth, but now thatâs also stopped working on the exact same settings that were smooth just a few weeks ago. I think Iâm just going to quit VR until I can get the Steam Frame.
I would do wireless VR, things seem to be going that way, but I donât have a spare router.
I use an og vive in linux and have almost no issues I stick to pcvr headsets when doing pcvr to try to minimize issues
Yeah, for a good VR experience you either want a native PCVR headset with a cable (one which plugs into USB & DP/HDMI on your GPU) or you'd want a dedicated wireless link of some form (either like the Vive Wireless Adapter with a PCIe 60GHz card, a dedicated Wifi Router just for the Quest or like the Steam Frame with it's custom dongle)
Anything else will pretty much always result in a sub-par experience. Some people may get away with sharing their main router with their Quest, but I can almost guarantee you those are people with not many devices on their crazy high-end router
People have bought dedicated routers for their Quest headset before, and there are some decent models for relatively cheap out there
(tho recommended models differ by region)
recently upgraded router to wifi 6 stopped crash due to connection lag and soon upgrading to GPU with AV1
i went too far i cant give up wireless vr
Good luck! For whatever reason wireless has been pretty painless here granted I had a WiFi 6 router and got wifi 7 mesh setup to replace it and desktop machine has wired connection, granted there is usually some quality drop in the image it has held up in terms of lag as long as my GPU isn't overtaxed by whatever game+encoding
On no man's sky with 3070 I had to crank a lot of the graphics all the way down, replaced with 5080 and it can deal now, flying the ship still somewhat nauseating but less so
Mines not CRAZY high end, but its just my PCs (wired), phone and headset. AX1800S I flashed OpenWRT onto. Also hosts an adblock
Steam mobile app appears to have added the option to sign into a steam frame
Wow good catch!
I will still be extremely surprised if we see it before april
My most realistic and worst case scenario because i'm a doomer will be preorders in april and shipping in summer
Unless they are going to stagger the release with frame/controller going first and then steam machine whenever they can find the RAM
would be suboptimal since if half life 3 exists it will be announced when the steam machine opens preorders or after it ships
I hope that doesn't happen but it does seem realistic
What face pads are people using with the quest 3? The inbox one is far to rough for me and makes me itchy
I got a pleather one, was whole head strap replacement and has extra battery on back, the battery is kinda garbage though, it might help with balancing out the weight but adds to the overall mass too... If were to buy again would look for one without battery probably but is more comfortable overall than stock still
It is sometimes nice having the extra charge but it isn't much and usually end up just plugging in somewhere or waiting for the built in battery to charge for a bit
The stock cloth pad and strap are garbage and yeah i have a headstrap or 2 on my list that includes swappable battery in the back
Still using BOBOVRâs innovative power swap design, the new battery architecture separates the discharge module from the battery pack, reducing battery pack heat. It also improves the discharge efficiency by 6% compared to the old model, and adds low-battery sound reminders and accurate battery le...

Extra batteries for this one don't seem to exist https://a.co/d/gIRQ9Hs without buying the same headstrap bundle

The strap adjusts quickly using a rotating ...
All 3 items for the first bundle seem to be in stock so no idea why the triple bundle isn't available
Pretty sure none of these have face pads
Yeah just looking at em here was first thought too you'll want new face pad if they don't include it first probably since will still be annoying and moreso with more weight on your head
Out of the group first one seems nicest to me, a bit of bulk with the extra blower fan or "ac" but probably nice to have too, most of the quadcopter fpv goggles have at least a little fan to keep your face cool under the goggles
Yeah the bobovr is the one I am leaning towards with a new face pad
i can vouch for the kiwi one, it feels pretty good.
idk if it's a kiwi thing or a thing related to the quest's design but the strap sometimes make the headset wobble a bit. like it only attaches to your face from the top leaving the bottom a bit mobile.
Welp looks like the deluxe audio strap for the vive might finally be discontinued right when I was going to buy it too.
time to switch ecosystems xd
"looks like they stopped making sodium lights for my ford model T" aaah complaint
Well I mean they stopped selling the normal headstrap bundles like 2 years ago
And it's not like people don't mod their headsets specifically to use it
Go inhabit a star or smth
yeah but a lot of people bought the deluxe audio strap for other headsets too there are a lot of 3d printed adapters available to use it with everything from the quest to the bigscreeen thats part of the reason I wanted it
No way
I like the original (cloth vive strap modded) strap more anyway ngl
Well at 10 years old mine is about to completely fall apart
I might just end up finding an index on marketplace at this rate
I did find someone selling another vive with the deluxe audio strap AND index controllers for $300 but I gotta get my car towed and fixed so maybe some other time
Anybody has any experience/knowledge on PCVR on a Quest3 with a 7800XT (over cable with quest link into Steam VR) for HL:Alyx?
I'm at a 100% usage at both high and low graphics, is that right?
Yeah, HLA scales render res to make use of as much of your GPU as possible while maintaining the 90fps target. So changing the graphics settings mostly trades graphics fidelity for image clarity
(so higher graphics settings = lower resolution)
you can lock the render res with a console command tho
tried vr for the first time and when i took it off i occasionally think the thing im looking at is like rendered computer graphics instead of like real
Yeah, but I wouldn't really recommend it, unless HLA is pinned at the lowest render res all the time
just for testing
theres an article about it ..
cant find it tho ..
so what do you think I should set it at? I really don't want to burn my GPU (unless thermal throttling is a sure way to prevent that)
dont worry about it
I'd like to play as high res and graphics as possible keeping a smooth experience
but I literally can't figure it out
same with the difference between Vulkan and Direct rendering
Thank you for the response though, that answers alot
thermal throttling will start before you burn anything up
set the in game quality preset to like medium and let the game handle it
which headset do you use
And the difference between vulkan and direct? I googled it but I am not 100% on what I should use (Use direct but on AMD vulkan can be smoother but it can not)
Oculus Quest 3
iirc, it's '4k+infinite display' 120Hz..?
qhd is a monitor resolution
my bad
just use the default setting
the default had me seeing black tearring
(when at spawn looking at the citadel)
that's why I took off to ask here about it (after looking for answers online first)
????
with the quests there's also the streaming to account for ..
yeah, wish I had a router that could run virtual desktop/steam link dirrectly
but I first wanted to prove I could do it over cable
As long as your GPU temps are fine there is no issue of running it at high gpu usage constantly
and honestly they are made to do that LOL
Also how are you running the Quest 3 for PCVR? Meta Link? wirted or wireless as well
Or are you using a different app such as ALVR or or the other one I can't remember the name of off the top of my head
"Virtual Desktop" seems to be the other one that gets mentioned a TON
Meta Link uses an extra 1-2GB of VRAM for me and with my limited 8GB that certainly causes issues
Also this seems to be the best option
AKA dedicated router plugged into the PC and then Wifi 6 to the quest 3
AKA separate router to the rest of your network aka strictly for VR usage
I MIGHT look into doing that myself aka have my Desktop conntent to normal wifi for internet and then bridge the connection to my 2.5gb ethernet that is then hooked into the VR router which strictly connects to the Quest 3
Cable through oculus link and then steam vr, 7800XT at 99% usage 300-400Watts constant about 90°C on hotspots, the GPU has 16GB VRAM
I'm mostly afraid of my case only having 1 in 120mm and 1 out 120mm and no other holes
So Meta Link cable got it
my router can't run wifi 6, let alone 6e
might end up buying the prism thing, didn't yet since it has to ship from America to Europe through Amazon (amazon has barely anything in my country)
16GB should be enough for the moment for VR modding
Ryzen 5 5600X
Ok similar specs to me then minus the GPU
I just want to play vanilla HL:Alyx
